Intel Takes 15 Percent Stake in German Digital Mapping Firm Here

US chip maker Intel will take a 15 percent stake in German digital mapping firm Here, it said on Tuesday, as it seeks to build its presence in automated driving technology.

A filing to the German cartel office on Tuesday showed Intel has sought approval to buy a stake in the company, which is controlled by German carmakers Daimler, BMW and Volkswagen .

Intel and Here said in a statement that they had also signed an agreement to collaborate on the research and development of real-time updates of high definition (HD) maps for highly- and fully-automated driving.

Intel did not disclose how much it would pay for the stake but said the transaction is expected to close in the first quarter.

The deal highlights a shift in the dynamics of research and development in the car industry, which until recently saw automakers largely dictating terms for suppliers to manufacture their proprietary technologies at specified volumes and prices.

Now carmakers are increasingly striking partnerships with technology firms using open technology standards, seeking to harness their expertise in areas including machine learning and mapping as they race against Silicon Valley companies such as Google, Tesla and Apple to develop driverless vehicles.

Last month two Chinese companies and Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC agreed to buy a 10 percent stake in Here and in July, BMW teamed up with Intel and Mobileye to develop self-driving cars by 2021.

BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen bought Here for EUR 2.8 billion ($2.9 billion) in 2015 from mobile equipment maker Nokia of Finland.

Last September, Here said it would introduce a new set of traffic services allowing drivers to see for themselves what live road conditions are like miles ahead using data from competing automakers, an industry first.

Paytm to Transfer Wallet Business to Payments Bank on January 15

Digital payments firm Paytm on Wednesday said its wallet business will soon be transferred to its payments bank but quashed social media rumours that the m-wallets will stop working after January 15.

“There are some rumours circulating that you will not be able to use the Paytm Wallet after 15th January! Nothing could be farther from the truth. On the contrary, Paytm Wallet users will soon enjoy additional benefits through Paytm Payments Bank Account,” Paytm said in a blog post.

The hoax message claims that since Paytm is converting into a payments bank post January 15, users will not be able to transact with their Paytm wallet money, it said.

The company noted that the Paytm Wallet will soon be transferred to the newly incorporated Paytm Payments Bank automatically but added that the m-wallets will work even after January 15.

Stating that this is just a “transfer of ownership of wallet to a new company called Paytm Payments Bank Ltd”, Paytm said customers will be given an option to open a separate bank account when the bank launches its services.

Paytm further said: “You are not required to open an account with Paytm Payments Bank to use the wallet.”

“After the movement, we will be able to offer our customers a host of new services and features such as savings accounts where they will earn interest as well in addition to being able to avail all the current services,” a Paytm spokesperson said.

Also, login details, wallet balance and user experience will remain the same. In case users choose to discontinue their Paytm wallets,

they can send an email to [email protected] or log in to Paytm.com/care to notify the choice of opting out and redeeming the balance by a one-time transfer to their own bank account.

In case a user’s wallet has been inactive for the last six months and has zero balance, it will not be transferred to the Paytm Payments Bank Wallet unless they specifically give consent for the same while logging into the app, web or by e-mail.

15,000 Winners Selected to Receive Digital Payments Rewards

A total of 15,000 winners have been selected from eight crore digital transactions as part of the government’s efforts to incentivise and boost digital payments in the country.

“A total of 15,000 winners were selected under 4 broad categories from the 8 crore digital transactions that took place between November 9, 2016 to December 21, 2016,” a statement said.

With an eye on cashless economy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had unveiled two schemes yesterday – Lucky Grahak Yojana and Digi Dhan Vyapaar Yojana – for customers and traders alike to promote mobile banking and e-payments.

He had said as a Christmas gift, 15,000 people will get rewards through a draw system, whereby each of the 15,000 winners will have Rs. 1,000 in their accounts.
“NPCI announced that the winners of the lucky draw will receive a message from their banks and the reward money will be credited into their bank accounts over the next 24 hours.

Citizens may check if they have received the reward by logging on to: www.digidhanlucky.mygov.in,” the statement said.

These categories include USSD (100 winners), UPI (1,500), Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS) (1,500) and RuPay (11,900). Of 125 crore people, 75 crore use credit and debit cards. Of these, 45 crore are active users.

With incentive schemes like Lucky Grahak Yojana and Digi Dhan Vyapar Yojana, the government hopes to provide a fillip to uptake of digital payments.

Winners of the Lucky Grahak Yojana and the Digi Dhan Vyapar Yojana will be selected on a daily and weekly basis respectively, leading up to a mega draw on April 14, 2017.

A separate statement said the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had rolled out the campaign in the tribal village of Palnar, a small village located in the naxal-hit region of Dantewada in Chhattisgarh.

Palnar – which has a population of 1,961 people – was visited by a team of bankers, district officials and technical officials who educated and convinced merchants and people to adopt digital payments.

The teams also extended their support to the merchants by enabling them to get Point-of-Sale (PoS) from banks and were also given training on the usage.

The Common Service Centres acted as micro ATM for the villagers, the statement said.

£15 million cash boost for new nuclear college

The Government has announced £15 million in funding to set up the National College for Nuclear headquartered in West Cumbria and Somerset.

The college is one of five National Colleges that will create the workforce of tomorrow by delivering high-level technical training to thousands of learners across England

Set across two hubs – one at Lakes College, Lillyhall and one in Somerset  – the college aims to train over 7,000 learners by 2020

The college, which is set to open its doors in late 2017, will meet the demand for highly skilled workers in the nuclear sector and will offer courses designed by employers for a range of highly specialised careers.

Skills Minister Nick Boles said: “This is the investment in high-tech skills that businesses are crying out for.

“We have made it a priority to work with employers to deliver high-quality, technical education and clear routes to employment that deliver economic growth and create opportunities for our young people, and enable our existing workforce to upskill and retrain for the jobs of the future.

“The National Colleges have been designed with employers, for employers. They will produce the skills needed now and into the future to ensure the UK remains innovative and at the forefront of pioneering industry.”

The National College for Nuclear is being funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), with additional support from the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership for the Southern Hub.

Sellafield Ltd and EDF Energy will lead industry input into the nuclear college, working alongside Lakes and Bridgwater colleges, plus higher education providers, University of Cumbria and University of Bristol.

Colin Reed, Sellafield Ltd human resources director and board chairman for the National College for Nuclear, said: “The announcement means that work will now begin on developing the curriculum which will help to train the next generation of nuclear workers.

“It is expected that new qualifications will be available in 2017 that reflect the needs of the nuclear sector and address the skills challenge facing the industry and its supply chain.”

Around 15,000 former students will have their loans canceled

The Trump administration has announced it will cancel $150 million in debt for certain students.

Some 15,000 former students whose schools closed while they were in attendance will now have their debt erased, the Education Department said Thursday. The department estimates that the forgiven loans will add up to around $150 million.

“For them, it’s going to be a very nice Christmas present,” said Clare McCann, deputy director of higher education policy at think tank New America and a former Education Department official.
