Soon, apply online for UP Board affiliation

The Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, has rejected applications of over 1,700 schools from across UP.

The Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, Allahabad, also known as the UP Board, has rejected applications of over 1,700 schools from across the state, seeking affiliation .

The Board is now in the process of asking these institutions to apply afresh for recognition from it, this time under its newly introduced online mode.

The move comes close on the heels of the Board’s July 12 step, on orders of the state government, inviting fresh applications for affiliation from interested schools through its official website—upmsp.edu.in—with effect from July 15 for 2020 board exams.

At the time of introducing the online affiliation process, the board had over 1700 applications pending with it. These schools had submitted their applications in hardcopy along with required documents as was the norm earlier.

Following the orders for online affiliation, the UP Board wrote to chairman and director (secondary education) Amarnath Verma informing him about the pending applications and sought directions in this regard.

Verma has asked the board to instruct these schools to apply afresh for recognition as per the set new norms and process. The new norms among other things make it mandatory for the schools to not just have CCTV cameras in all classrooms and offices but also have biometric attendance for staff. The schools need to submit a certificate in this regard duly issued by the district inspectors of school (DOISs) concerned.

The schools are required to apply for new class 10 and class 12 subjects online by September 30, 2017. The schools which miss this deadline would be able to apply online till October 31 albeit with a late fee.

The DIOSs will submit their recommendations after a spot inspection of the schools concerned by December 31 after which the board will take the final decision.

“Affiliation process of over 1700 schools was pending when it was made online. We have received the instructions to accept applications of these schools also through the online mode. The decision is now being conveyed to the schools,” said Neena Srivastava, secretary, UP Board.

Do you aspire to work in SBI, India’s largest bank? State Bank of India (SBI) is hiring specialists for its marketing department on a contractual basis. SBI has extended the last day to apply online for the positions, according to an advertisement on the bank’s website. The last date to register and pay fees online is June 2, 2017. SBI is hiring one senior vice president (brand/media/research), one vice president (marketing communications), one vice president (digital marketing), one vice president (media strategy & operations) and one senior manager (digital marketing). Selection will be based on short-listing – based on their qualification, experience and overall suitability – and personal interview, SBI said. The banking major has also relaxed the required experience by two years for two vice president roles – marketing communications and media strategy & operations, it said.

Candidates applying for the position of senior vice president (brand/media/research) should have a minimum 8 years of experience, “with career experience either in BFSI/ Telecom or any other large service sector”. Graduates in any discipline can apply and those with MBA in Marketing will be preferred, SBI said.

Without divulging the salary being offered on these roles, SBI said: “The compensation package would comprise of fixed and variable components but not a limiting factor for a suitable candidate.”

An application fee (non-refundable) of Rs. 600 is applicable, which needs to be paid online.

Some of the responsibilities of the senior vice presidents listed by SBI included:

Strategising and implementation of effective marketing plans for different Business Units in line with their business objectives
Developing sharp marketing briefs, based on compelling market/consumer insights
Managing different agency partners (creative, media, research etc.) and other vendors, to get them to deliver high quality output within defined marketing budget and timelines

Also, for the position of vice president (digital marketing), SBI is looking for candidates with MBA from a recognised university and a minimum experience of eight years “in varied roles including Digital Marketing. Work experience in a Public Sector Bank, preferably with awareness of SBI work culture and management practices.” Among other skills, SBI has mentioned core experience in product marketing using digital media platforms with specific experience in search and display, SEO, SEM and programmatic.

Profession is losing out on the ‘best brains’ to take education forward, expert warns

The country’s highest-achieving A-level students are the least likely to apply to teach, the latest official figures show.

Pupils who achieved an A-level point score of 18 – equivalent to three A* grades – have the lowest rate of applications to initial teacher-training courses, the figures reveal. And that rate has dropped by more than a quarter in the last year.

By contrast, those students who scored seven A-level points – equivalent to a C and two D grades – were the most likely to try for a career in teaching, with an application rate that was five times higher than the top achievers’.

John Howson, a teacher recruitment expert and visiting professor at Oxford Brookes University, said that attracting those with the highest grades does matter.

‘Moving education forward’

“We need some of them, because those are the people who will have the best brains for development work, for research, to take education forward,” he said.

 “These people have got a wide range of choices. Attracting them is a difficult problem to solve, but what we shouldn’t do is make it more difficult – when you impose a pay freeze, reduce salary increases – that is making the problem worse,” he said.

The government has been trying to raise the bar for graduates entering teaching, by withdrawing funding for those who do not have a 2:2 degree or above, in most subjects, and expanding Teach First, which requires recruits to have a 2:1 or first-class degree.

A Department for Education spokesperson said: “We want to work with unions and the sector to raise the status of the profession so it takes its rightful place alongside other learned professions like medicine and law.

“There are record levels of trainees now holding a first-class degree and almost three-quarters of trainees hold a 2:1 or above – demonstrating that teaching quality is the highest it has been in a generation.”

Female students urged to apply for top graduate schemes

Female students are less likely to aim for top graduate jobs but more likely to land them if they apply, says the Association of Graduate Recruiters.

Its survey of leading employers found that, while 54% of students are women, they make up just 47% of graduate scheme applicants.

But they took 49% of the posts, the responses by 170 employers showed.

“Many women don’t apply for the top schemes when they should,” said AGR chief executive Stephen Isherwood.

Improving the gender diversity of graduate programmes is largely a challenge of attracting women in the first place, says the report.

Once they apply women are more likely to be hired, according to the survey sent to AGR members in April this year.

Female challenge

Even in male-dominated areas such as IT and engineering, women are proportionally more likely to succeed once they decide to apply, the survey found.

For example, women make up only 17% of IT students and 15% of engineering students, but succeed in getting 27% and 25% respectively of the places on graduate schemes in these fields, the report suggests.

This means that while men make up 83% and 85% of the student population in these fields, they find it relatively tougher to get work – taking 73% and 75% of the jobs.

But in the field of law the reverse is true – 63% of students are female but only 58% of the graduate scheme posts go to women.

Graduate employers are making efforts to boost the numbers of women they hire, the research found.

Three quarters of the firms which responded to the survey had a diversity strategy in place, and the majority said redressing workplace gender imbalance was the highest priority.

Construction and engineering firms were particularly successful, increasing the share of women hires by 3% and 4% respectively in a year, says the report.

Mr Isherwood says considerable barriers to gender equality remain.

“Graduate employers want to hire women, there are lots of opportunities out there and these candidates are more likely to succeed, so we need to address why they’re not applying. Industry-wide collaboration to tackle student perceptions will be a key step forward.

“We know women are hugely successful in the selection process. We just need them to realise it. We need to boost confidence and encourage more female graduates to reach their potential.”
