Half of young people are so troubled they can’t focus at school, study finds

Almost half of all young people experience so many emotional problems at school that they are unable to focus on their studies, a new poll has found.

Meanwhile, their levels of happiness and confidence are dropping, and more than a quarter feel that they have no control over their lives.

And more than one in six believe that they will never amount to anything, no matter how hard they try.

More than 2,200 young people between the ages of 16 and 25 were surveyed by the Prince’s Trust charity. Nearly half (45 per cent) said that they did not believe in themselves when they were at school. And 48 per cent said that they experienced problems during their school years that prevented them from concentrating on their academic work.

Of these, 46 per cent did not talk to anyone about their problems. Largely, this was because they did not want other people to know that they were struggling. And more than half (58 per cent) did not think that asking for help would solve the problem.

The survey is the eighth such study conducted by the Prince’s Trust. This year, young people’s levels of happiness and confidence were at their lowest level since the first survey was commissioned.

‘Amount to nothing’

Their plummeting confidence is caused by a number of factors. Half of those surveyed felt that the pressures of finding a job were greater than they were a year ago. And 42 per cent believed that traditional financial goals – such as finding a steady job or owning a house – were unrealistic.

In fact, 16 per cent argued that their lives would amount to nothing, no matter how hard they tried. And 18 per cent said that they did not believe that they could change their circumstances, even if they wanted to.

Dame Martina Milburn, chief executive of the Prince’s Trust, said: “This report paints a deeply concerning picture of a generation who feel their ability to shape their own future is slipping away from them.

“It’s shocking how many feel so desperate about their situation, and it is vital that we support them to develop the confidence and coping skills they need to succeed in life.”

Scots teachers are ‘dangerously overstretched’ by vacancies

There were nearly 730 teacher vacancies in Scotland’s schools as pupils returned after their summer break, figures have shown.

A freedom of information request by the Liberal Democrats showed 388 primary teacher vacancies and 341 for secondary schools as of 9 August.

Argyll and Bute recorded the most vacancies at 200.

The Scottish government said the figures represented only 1.5% of the total workforce.

The area with the second highest vacancy rate was Aberdeen, where 86 vacancies were recorded, followed by the Borders at 47.

Liberal Democrat education spokesman Tavish Scott said teachers would be “dangerously overstretched” unless action was taken to address the shortages.

‘Increase pressure’

His party has called for a penny increase in income tax in order to raise money for education spending.

He said: “Thousands of pupils faced the prospect of going back to school without a dedicated class teacher in place.

“This can only increase pressure on other teachers and make life more difficult for those pupils who need the most support.”

A Scottish government spokeswoman said ministers wanted the “right number of teachers with the right skills” .

She added: “Where there is an issue, this tends to be in specific areas where local factors, such as house prices, can be an important part of the problem.

“We are spending £88m this year to make sure every school has access to the right number of teachers.”

the spokeswoman said that teacher vacancies arose across Scottish local authorities “continuously throughout the year”.

“These figures represent less than 1.5% of the total workforce and in the time since they were compiled many of these vacancies will have been filled”, she said.

Boys are becoming increasingly disadvantaged in school due to the system becoming “over-feminised”, a Tory MP has claimed.

Karl McCartney, Conservative MP for Lincoln, has suggested the gap in attainment between boys and girls in schools is being ignored by the government in a way that would not be tolerated if the situation was reversed.

The reason boys fall behind is partly down to a lack of male role models in a society which makes it “fashionable to advance the cause of the female gender”, he said.

His comments follow a debate over the issue in parliament this week, after A-Level and GCSE results fell across the board with boys particularly affected by lower grades.

Grade outcomes for all candidates last month showed a decline in the number of A*-C grades by as much as 2.1 percentage points on last year – the biggest ever drop since the exams were introduced more than 25 years ago.

Girls continue to outperform their male peers, increasing the gender gap on previous years.

Speaking to i, Mr McCartney called on the government to do more to tackle the growing academic divide.

He said: “If equality means anything, it’s equality for all.”

 Speaking in the House of Commons, he said he wanted to close “the gap between the educational performance of boys and girls, but not at the cost of reducing girls’ performance”.

“If it was the other way around, there is no way that status quo would have been allowed to continue,” he said.

Labour MP Siobhain McDonagh responded that the issue lay not with gender, but rather the “white working-class”.

When pressed on why the gender education gap was not being addressed, McCartney later said: “You don’t have to go too far back to when the playing field was certainly slanted towards boys and the male gender rather than the female one… that had to change and rightly so.”

He continued: “It’s been fashionable to advance the cause of the female gender for quite a long time, and rightly so – I’m not denigrating anybody who does that.”

But, he said, the tables had since reversed and the issue needed to be addressed.

Quoting Office for National Statistics figures, Mr McCartney said on average men in full-time or part-time work under 29 years of age were paid less per hour on average than women.

This, he said, flew in the face of the “shrill equal pay brigade, who while proclaiming the need for equality seem quietly to gloss over that fact when shouting from the rooftops with regard to equal pay”.

The MP went on to suggest there could be many factors behind the gender education gap, including boys developing at a slower rate than girls, the “over-feminisation” of the education system and a lack of male teachers at school.

Boys could also be affected by not having a male role model at home to impart “the importance of education”, he said. “Boys need outlets for their creativity, energy and natural instincts. They need to know it is okay to be masculine, and that masculinity is the equal of femininity.”

Mr McCartney said the traditional masculine roles needed to be celebrated as they were what “males were born to do”.

Nick Gibb, the Schools Minister, responded: “Tackling the inequality driven by socio-economic background is a key priority for the Government, as is tackling the inequality driven by gender.”

Responding to Mr McCartney’s comments in parliament, Anne Heavey, an education policy adviser at the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, said he was right to debate the issue, but that his comments were “unhelpful”.

“The biggest question is why the system isn’t working for so many children, both girls and boys, and whether we should be opening up vocational opportunities for all pupils,” she said.

“I think when we’re talking about gender and diversity, entrenching very stereotypical gender norms is unhelpful. We have moved on, and I don’t think we want to go back to the time when the girls did the needlework and the boys did the woodwork.”

Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner said she shared McCartney’s “justified concerns” about boys falling behind in education, particularly those from working class backgrounds, but said government cuts were jeopardising all pupils’ access to a “good quality, free education”.

“We should be encouraging children to see beyond traditional gender stereotypes and work towards all children succeeding regardless of their race, gender and class background,” she said.

A Department for Education spokesperson said: “We want Britain to be a country that works not just for a privileged few, but for every one of us, regardless of background.

“We are seeing record university application rates among young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, however too many are still missing out. We know that white working class boys particularly lag behind, and we must now focus on extending opportunity for all.

“The Prime Minister has been clear that this Government won’t be looking to entrench advantage among the fortunate – we will look to help everybody reach their potential‎.”

Moaning parents of Hartsdown Academy kids are irresponsible and should support strict uniform code

If I ever meet headmaster Matthew Tate I’m going to kiss him. He might not want me to kiss him but I won’t be able to help myself because this guy is my hero. And not just mine, it seems.

Parents up and down the country are applauding him for sending home pupils who turned up at Margate’s Hartsdown Academy on the first day of term wearing the wrong uniform .

Parents had been told back in July strict uniform codes would be enforced. An explanatory diagram was even posted on Facebook so there could be no confusion. But a bunch of lazy parents ignored it.

So Matt Tate did what he said he’d do and sent the offenders home – 60 on the first day, 20 on the second and 12 on the third.

But instead of ­admitting THEY were wrong, instead of being grateful the man who had achieved fantastic results in other schools had come to theirs, those parents staged a demo outside the school gates against Mr Tate’s “Gestapo-style rules”.

Others made excuses – little Johnny can’t wear a blazer because he gets hot and when he gets hot he gets headaches. Little Susie has to wear trainers, not proper shoes, because her feet hurt. Sorry but that’s b****cks!

Matt Tate is doing what every teacher, every headmaster should be doing: he’s trying to raise standards – an old-fashioned concept but they’re the cornerstone of everything.

We live by standards, some of us die trying to uphold them. We judge others on them. We try to live up to those of people we respect. They are the blueprint for everything that’s good.

And Matt Tate, God bless him, is determined to drive up standards at the Hartsdown Academy because its GCSE results are way below the Kent average and it has a reputation of being a “scruffy school” where the pupils do what the hell they want.

Well, not any more. But instead of being grateful that their kids might just get a decent start in life, these idiot parents are fighting him because he dared to say if children want to be in his school they have to follow the rules and wear the uniform.

Because anyone with half a brain knows uniforms aren’t just about the clothes. They’re about everyone starting on the same level playing field. They’re about discipline, standards, boundaries.

“People think caring for children is about letting them do what they want and having no expectations of them,” says Mr Tate. “But what’s needed is to say, ‘This is what we expect, this is what we believe in and we’re following through with it’.”

Now, that’s music to my ears. Yet all some of those dopey parents see are “Gestapo-style rules” and their precious offspring being told what to do by someone else – even if what he’s telling them is right. Well, maybe if those kids had been taught properly about rules at home, they wouldn’t have been sent home from school.

Yes, it’s a child’s instinct to kick against the traces. But it’s a teacher’s job (and a parent’s) to show them it won’t work.

And that’s what Matt Tate’s doing. It’s HIS school, HIS rules and if you don’t like it – shove off to a school capable of little more than preparing kids for life on the dole.

I just hope the school governors and council back Mr Tate and don’t cave in to these idiots with their excuses about why THEIR kids should be exceptions to the rules. Because the future of these children is at stake here.

And better it’s in the hands of a man who knows how to shape it than a bunch of gobby parents who’d rather shout the odds outside the school gates than get on with the job of having their kids educated.

One father complained: “We’ve been called irresponsible.” You are matey. You are.

As for all those parents threatening to take their kids out of Hartsdown – do it!

It’ll make Matt Tate’s job a damn sight easier.

Why student governors are the answer to giving pupils a voice

How can we make feedback from our pupils meaningful? A group of primary schools in Bristol have armed them with clipboards and iPads and sent them into classrooms, as Year 6 teacher Jon Rees explains

When our school leadership partner was looking to develop a more active voice for children as school-improvement partners, I was keen to get involved. School councils can help students feel involved in the running of their school but achievements are often limited to break-time initiatives and the remodelling of the playground.

Greenfield E-ACT Academy serves a deprived area of south Bristol with families who may have low engagement with school life. After the school recently received a “good” Ofsted from a fairly low starting point, as lead teacher on the project I could see how this would both develop children’s life skills and contribute towards our effectiveness as teachers.

I felt that if our children were going to be school-improvement partners, the roles should be formal and mirror the grown-up versions as closely as possible. The first challenge to pupils was the application process, which included written applications, shortlisting and interviews. The children were keen to get involved; we had 60 applications across the three E-ACT schools. Alongside our leadership adviser, I created selection criteria, set interview questions and finally shortlisted and approved seven children for my school. I was looking for children who could cope with the responsibility and would also benefit from some self-management skills.

Pupil independence

As associate governors, the children inspect classrooms once a term, as you would for any self-evaluation form (SEF), and present their findings to governors and the head of school. The key for us is that we take a step back after children have received their initial training and allow more independence.

At Greenfield, our associate governors complete a pupil SEF that is presented to heads of school three times a year. Classroom visits for every year group take place throughout the school year, with the children using the same headings as the full SEF – attitudes to learning, safety, behaviour, the learning environment and attendance. We’ve gained a unique pupil perception on various issues, from making lessons more pupil-friendly by using IT to the alarming discovery of unsecure ceiling panels in the toilets.

Next year we’re looking to modify the roles slightly to make more of working with neighbouring schools in our academy group.

Overall, the associate governor roles have given children the voice, language and confidence to help us monitor and evaluate our school. Gaining information through the eyes of a pupil in a formal way was quite daunting for us at first, but it has developed into a regular part of school life. Now we’re all ready for the children appearing in our classrooms with the clipboard next term.

Profession is losing out on the ‘best brains’ to take education forward, expert warns

The country’s highest-achieving A-level students are the least likely to apply to teach, the latest official figures show.

Pupils who achieved an A-level point score of 18 – equivalent to three A* grades – have the lowest rate of applications to initial teacher-training courses, the figures reveal. And that rate has dropped by more than a quarter in the last year.

By contrast, those students who scored seven A-level points – equivalent to a C and two D grades – were the most likely to try for a career in teaching, with an application rate that was five times higher than the top achievers’.

John Howson, a teacher recruitment expert and visiting professor at Oxford Brookes University, said that attracting those with the highest grades does matter.

‘Moving education forward’

“We need some of them, because those are the people who will have the best brains for development work, for research, to take education forward,” he said.

 “These people have got a wide range of choices. Attracting them is a difficult problem to solve, but what we shouldn’t do is make it more difficult – when you impose a pay freeze, reduce salary increases – that is making the problem worse,” he said.

The government has been trying to raise the bar for graduates entering teaching, by withdrawing funding for those who do not have a 2:2 degree or above, in most subjects, and expanding Teach First, which requires recruits to have a 2:1 or first-class degree.

A Department for Education spokesperson said: “We want to work with unions and the sector to raise the status of the profession so it takes its rightful place alongside other learned professions like medicine and law.

“There are record levels of trainees now holding a first-class degree and almost three-quarters of trainees hold a 2:1 or above – demonstrating that teaching quality is the highest it has been in a generation.”

Students are building apps with a social conscience

Ben Kaube, 26, is studying in his final year for a PhD in quantum mechanics at Imperial College London. He’s also the co-creator of a new app which allows frustrated commuters to claim fare refunds for lengthy train delays. His inspiration? “Hundreds and hundreds of hours of my life wasted on delayed trains. I just thought: there’s got to be a better way.”

After Kaube first got the idea about a year ago, the new TrainTrick app launched last month, and Kaube says they’ve already processed claims from thousands of people. It’s a simple concept: users upload a photo of their ticket if a train has been delayed, and Kaube and his colleague do the rest, taking a 10% cut of any refund (though it is free until October).

Kaube says the true purpose of the app is to apply pressure on train franchise operators to invest and improve their service for customers. Users are given the option to donate their refund to a JustGiving cause.

“Older generations often say our generation is apathetic, we just do hashtag activism,” he says. “I think that’s because they often don’t understand that the way to get things done has changed. Now you can have a much bigger impact with an app than you could do by other means. Where before you might write a letter, now building an app has been a more effective way of getting momentum behind an idea and support for your cause.”

Under-35s dominate the market, accounting for over half of app developers in the UK. Although such research doesn’t break down the purpose of these apps, Kaube is far from alone in being a young person designing one to tackle a social issue.

‘Founding a company on your own is incredibly stressful’

Cameron Graham, 21, had a lengthy spell in hospital in 2014. The economics and finance graduate from the University of Strathclyde shared a ward with an elderly dementia patient, and noticed a transformation in his demeanour – becoming happier and calmer – when his granddaughter showed him photographs of his family during visits. Upon leaving hospital, and surprised that nothing like it existed already, Graham established Storii, a platform which allows those in care settings, including carers and families, to log life stories, care plans and even music and videos to aid patients through reminiscence therapy.

The app is now being used in care homes. Graham’s company employs nine staff, and is currently raising £1m of seed funding. He says that being so young was no hindrance. “This isn’t something that comes up very often. To customers, I’m the CEO of a company developing a product they want to use, not a recent graduate.”

That said, it was difficult for him to juggle a thriving business with his degree. “I asked Strathclyde University to defer my studies after third year to work full time on Storii. During third year, I managed to work both on the business and studying, but it wasn’t very healthy and I wouldn’t recommend it. Doing both, especially when founding a company on your own, is incredibly stressful.”

Kaube’s experience has been similar: “it’s been a real challenge trying to balance the two.”

Craig Docherty, 23, then vice-president of Stirling University’s computing club and about to commence a research degree in computing science, responded to a call from the local council for help with its autism strategy. He led a project team, made up of a number of programming students, to create an app that allows people with autism to cope better with life changes. It lets users choose options to reflect how they feel about new situations, such as moving from primary to secondary school, input their likes and dislikes, and outline their preferred method of communication.

It’s already proved popular among a range of council departments, and will fully launch in October to coincide with the its nomination for a prize at the Cosla (Convention of Scottish Local Authorities) Excellence Awards.

“I thought it would be a good learning opportunity for our students, and a nice way to do a project with a purpose. So we’re not just sitting confined within the university, [but] doing something that really does make a difference,” Docherty says.

He hopes it can begin a partnership between students and bodies who desperately need their help – “in the first instance, hopefully between students and councils, connecting students with those opportunities. But also it’s a conversation in general about how to digitise services and make lives easier.”

‘Young people are being empowered to tackle problems’

Risha Jindal’s older sister had just moved away to university and didn’t know what to do with the leftover ingredients after cooking. So, a 16-year-old Risha and her sister devised Digimeal, an app which creates recipe ideas when they enter three ingredients they have in their cupboards. It won the £15,000 iDEA award for young digital entrepreneurs in 2014, which funded the app’s creation, and is on course for a full launch within a year.

“There is the positive effect of helping students and teaching them how to cook and giving them ideas but then there’s the other side of trying to reduce food waste by reducing the amount that gets wasted due to a lack of ideas,” explains Jindal, now 19, who has recently completed her first year studying economics and international development at the University of Sussex, where she and her friends use the app.

She thinks such apps are a way of young people being empowered to tackle problems. “It’s our generation trying to help each other rather than leaving it to someone else to look after us… We have this opportunity to be creative and to make our ideas happen. Young people are taking it into their own hands.”

CAIT Alleges Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal Are Violating FDI Norms

Traders body CAIT has filed a complaint with DIPP alleging that major e-tailers Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal are blatantly violating FDI norms.

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has filed a complaint with the “DIPP against Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal for blatant violation of FDI Policy in e-commerce of the government”, CAIT said in a statement.

When contacted, Snapdeal declined to comment on the matter. Amazon and Flipkart did not respond to e-mail queries.

CAIT said that during past three days these companies have given big advertisements in media announcing sale on their platform which is a violation of FDI guidelines on e-commerce.

These companies are allowed to do B2B business but they are doing B2C for which they are not authorised, it said. CAIT has sought an appointment with Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sithraman.

It asked the ministry to “take immediate action against these companies which are habitual in contravening the policy”.

In March, government allowed 100 per cent FDI through automatic route in the marketplace format of e-commerce retailing.

As per the guidelines issued by the DIPP on FDI in e-commerce, foreign direct investment (FDI) has not been permitted in inventory-based model of e-commerce.
