How to tell if your locks have been tampered with

Fearing your locks have been tampered with is a worrying feeling. If you have just returned home you will be concerned that a stranger has been in your home and perhaps stolen your property. You may be afraid that they are still in your home. Perhaps most of all you are likely to worry that once the locks have been tampered with, your home is no longer secure and there is nothing to stop a burglar or stalker returning. If you suspect your locks have been tampered with, as well as calling the police, it is a good idea to contact a locksmith. They can advise you on suitable locks for your doors, helping you feel secure in your home once again.

There are a number of different ways a lock can be tampered with. A lock which has been forced may leave obvious signs, such as splintered wood, a warped frame or even a kicked in door. But there may also be more subtle signs such as bent latches or paint circles from where the lock fixture has been moved. If you are finding it hard to turn your key in the lock, this could be a sign that your lock has been picked or bumped.

Picking a lock, using a thin object such as a screwdriver or a pick, is a long established burglary technique. Picking a lock is time-consuming, but may leave few marks. To work out if your lock has been picked look at the metal around the keyhole. Over time that metal has become weathered and dull. If there are shiny scratches around the keyhole this could be a sign that someone has recently picked the lock.

Bumping is a technique used by locksmiths to open locks. A key has been filed into points so it resembles a saw. It is inserted into a lock and then withdrawn one click at a time, striking it to catch the lock tumblers. An amateur trying this technique may leave signs such as shiny marks around the keyhole from the hits. However when done properly, this technique leaves very few signs.

Suspecting your locks have been tampered with is a distressing feeling, but it is important not to panic. Contact the police at the earliest opportunity to report that you believe some has entered or tried to enter your property unauthorised. If you are confident it is safe to do so, you can check to see if any of your possessions are missing, but try to leave the area as undisturbed as possible for the police to investigate if necessary.

To improve security after a break-in or to prevent one from happening, contact a locksmith or a security expert to discuss possible improvements you can make. You could use a device to prevent a deadbolt being turned even after it has been unlocked or consider a sliding bolt. Most people are familiar with electronic locks on cars, but these can also be used in homes. These are not reliant on pins and tumblers to operate and so cannot be picked or bumped. Alongside new locks, security cameras and burglar alarms can be used as an added layer of protection. Whatever measures you use to keep your home secure, it is important to remain vigilant to any possible signs your locks have been tampered with.

Opera Sync Servers Breached; Synced Passwords May Have Been Compromised

It becomes quite a humiliating thing for a software company when its security is breached. However, with the advancement in security measures taken by tech giants, hackers have also upped their game. The latest victim to a hacker attack is Opera, and the company acknowledged on Friday that its Opera Sync servers, where it stored user’s synchronised passwords and account information, had been breached.

Opera said in a blog post that earlier last week, the company “detected signs of an attack where access was gained to the Opera sync system.” Even though the company has claimed that the attack was blocked quickly, it has admitted that some data, which includes the username and passwords of some users of its sync service, may have been compromised.

It should be noted that even though the third-party website passwords that are linked to the synchronisation service are themselves safe and secure, as they are kept in an encrypted form, access to Opera Sync account information means the hackers can potentially decrypt these passwords.

Opera says, “Although we only store encrypted (for synchronized passwords) or hashed and salted (for authentication) passwords in this system, we have reset all the Opera sync account passwords as a precaution.”

The company says it has also sent out emails to all Opera Sync users asking them to change their Opera Sync password, and also reset any passwords to third party sites that they may have synchronized with its service.

In order to change your password for Opera’ sync service, you can head to the password reset page. One factor that might come as a relief to the company in the entire situation is that a very small fraction, around 1.7 million users, out of its total 350 million users, actively avail the cloud-sync service, which has been attacked. Users who do not use the sync service are not required to take any measures as per the company.

Opera has apologised for the security breach to its users and said that an investigation is going on regarding the same.

Last week, interestingly, Opera launched a free and unlimited VPN for Android which also includes an ad-tracker blocking function, and a Wi-Fi security test.

Has the internet been overtaken by the eldritch horror of Yog-Sothoth?

It’s always been stressful on the internet, but lately, something feels different. There have always been trolls and ugly news stories, but in recent months, we’re starting to catch dread glimpses of a larger design. We sense a latent horror behind the social media cleanses and offline apps, an understanding that the mere presence of networked electronics draws us ever deeper into the dark ocean of gibbering madness that always lingers just beyond our comprehension.

Some nights ago, I happened upon the disjointed ramblings of a Tumblr user called “astercrash,” which brought the matter into terrible clarity.

We’ve got this dimension right next to ours, that extends across the entire planet, and it is just brimming with nightmares. We have spambots, viruses, ransomware, this endless legion of malevolent entities that are blindly probing us for weaknesses, seeking only to corrupt, to thieve, to destroy.

Add onto that the corrupted ones themselves, humans who’ve abandoned morality and given up faces to hunt other people, jeering them, lashing out, seeing how easy it is to kill something you can’t touch or see or smell. They’ll corrupt anything they think could be a vessel for their message and they’ll jabber madly at any who question them. Their chittering haunts every corner of the internet. They are not unlike the spambots in some ways.

Add on top of that the arcane magisters, who are forever working at the cracks between our world and the world we made. Some of them do it for fun, some of them do it for wealth, others do it for the power of nations unwise enough to trust them. There are mages who work to defend against this particular evil, but they are mad prophets, and their advice is almost never heeded, even by those who keep them as protection.

It makes a lot of sense! Cybersecurity folks tend to assume the internet is an endless source of threats, but now that hordes of Kremlin-backed troublemakers are spreading Bernie Sanders thong drawings to weaken America’s resolve, this kind of waking nightmare is more plausible than ever. Who among us, after a late night of browsing, has not sensed the delirious rumblings of an ancient and unspeakable horror? In the haze of connectivity, are we not all drawn to the same nightmarish portent?

Maybe not on Instagram.
