Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ Update Brings Improved Stability to Face Unlock and Camera

Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ were launched in India at an event held in New Delhi on March 6. With the phones available for purchase starting Friday, March 16, Samsung has pushed the latest software update that brings improved stability to the Face Unlock feature on the Galaxy S9 range as well as to the camera on the two phones. Apart from that, the company is also rolling out the latest March Android security patch, dated March 1.

The build number for the update is G960FXXU1ARC5 for the Samsung Galaxy S9 and G965FXXU1ARC5 for the Samsung Galaxy S9+. Size of the update is around 243MB. The usual device stability improvements and bug fixes also accompany the major upgrades with this update. It is now rolling out to units in India.

Both smartphones sport almost identical specifications apart from difference in display size, RAM variants, and rear camera. The Galaxy S9 range comes with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC in US and China and Samsung Exynos 9810 SoC in other markets including India. Apart from that, the phones have 64GB/ 128GB/ 256GB storage variants, Android Oreo out-of-the-box, AR emoji, and dual AKG-powered speakers.

The Galaxy S9 sports a 5.8-inch QHD+ Curved Super AMOLED display with an 18.5:9 display, while the Galaxy S9+ gets a 6.2-inch one. The Galaxy S9 has 4GB RAM and the Galaxy S9+ comes with 6GB of RAM. Lastly, the Galaxy S9+ features a dual camera setup on the back, while the Galaxy S9 gets just one; both have the Super Speed Dual Pixel 12-megapixel autofocus image sensor.

Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ Teasers, Leaks Suggest Upgraded Camera Performance

Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are the company’s upcoming flagship smartphones set to launch at the Galaxy Unpacked event on February 25, just ahead of MWC 2018 in Barcelona. While we still have a few days before the big unveiling, numerous leaks and teasers have surfaced online giving us a clearer picture of what to expect at the event. Samsung has also released three new teasers that hint at the features of the upcoming Galaxy S9 range, including an Animoji-competitor. A separate leak shows supposed shots taken on Galaxy S9’s camera. The Galaxy S9+ has also been spotted on AnTuTubenchmark website.

Starting off with information right from the horse’s mouth, three new official teasers have been uploaded on YouTube that show off three expected features on the Galaxy S9 duo. The first teasershows slow-motion footage hinting at a slow-mo camera feature on the upcoming phones. The second teaser shows low-light, flash photography that possibly hints at an upgrade on that front, which can be expected with a new f/1.5 aperture camera. And, finally, the third teaser shows off 3D emojis that look eerily similar to Animoji on the iPhone X – something that was rumoured earlier this week.

9To5Google seems to have acquired detailed information on this rumoured 3D emoji feature. According to their sources, the feature will capture an image of your face and use it to create a full-bodied animated character. The report also states that users will be able to customise the characters’ clothing, hairstyle, looks using the tools available.

Separately, the Samsung Galaxy S9+ has been spotted on benchmark portal AnTuTu’s database. A screenshot, obtained from Weibo, shows the model number SM-G9650 with a score of 265,267. According to the listing, the phone will run Android 8.0.0 Oreo. It is expected to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, coupled with Adreno GPU, 6GB RAM, and 64GB RAM. The display has a resolution of 1080×2220 pixels, in sync with the current Galaxy S8+.

And, finally, Twitter user @MMDDJ posted alleged shots taken on the Galaxy S9. The tweet shows images of a skyline taken side-by-side on the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S8. Interestingly, these images are cropped because the tipster claims – in a reply – posting the original images is not allowed.

Transsion Holdings-owned Tecno Mobile announced the launch of its latest smartphone in India, the Tecno Camon i, on Thursday. The phone is the company’s first phone to arrive with an 18:9 aspect ratio display. Priced at Rs. 8,999, the Camon i will go on sale in India starting in the first week of February via offline channels.

The Tecno Camon i is available in Midnight Black, Champagne Gold, and City Blue colour variants. It is Tecno Mobile’s first smartphone in India with a ‘Full View’ display. The smartphone takes on competition from the Micromax Canvas Infinity and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. Tecno Mobile is offering 100 days replacement warranty, one-time screen replacement, and one-month extended warranty over and above the 12 month warranty period.

The Tecno Camon i is a dual-SIM (Nano) smartphone that runs HiOS v3.2.0 based on Android 7.0 Nougat. The phone sports a 5.65-inch HD+ (720×1440 pixels) Full View display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. It is powered by an unnamed 64-bit 1.3GHz quad-core SoC, coupled with 3GB of RAM.

In terms of camera specifications, the phone features a 13-megapixel rear sensor with quad-LED flash, f/2.0 aperture, and a 5P lens. It also has a front 13-megapixel sensor with LED flash, screen flash, f/2.0 aperture, and a 5P lens. The phone sports 32GB inbuilt storage, expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB). There is a 3050mAh battery under the hood.

Connectivity options include 3G, 4G (Band 40 supported), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Micro-USB, and GPS. Sensors on the Tecno Camon i include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, and fingerprint sensor. Dimensions of the handset are 152.2×71.1×7.75mm. Weight of the phone is 172 grams.

Nokia 8 Fails to Impress in DxOMark Camera Rankings

HMD Global last year launched the Nokia 8 as its top-notch camera smartphone – the company’s first with Carl Zeiss optics. While the company is offering compelling features a dual camera setup and ‘bothie’ mode to take on the competition, DxOMark camera rankings show poor results for the Nokia 8. The DxOMark team points out some key improvement areas that could make the latest Nokia flagship a better option against the top-end models from Apple, Samsung, Huawei, and other brands.

Unlike the iPhone X that achieved an overall score of 97 or the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 that scored 94, the Nokia 8 has received a significantly low rating in DxOMark review, with a total score of 68. The smartphone sits just below the Lava Z25, however, it acquires a better position against the Nokia 808 PureView that received a score of 61 from the DxOMark team.

DxOMark reports that the primary camera of the Nokia 8 produces “nice images” in some situations, with a good amount of exposure and usually with accurate white balance. But sometimes, the team observed that the images show quite low levels of saturation and some noticeable colour rendering differences between centre and edges of the frame. On the part of the dynamic range, it is found to be good but only when the preloaded Auto HDR mode is enabled.

Some noticeable lags are spotted in terms of texture and noise that affect the camera performance of the Nokia 8. Among other environments, fairly strong noise is claimed to be visible in plain colour areas even in bright light, and levels of details are also generally low with a full of blurred details and textures. The detailing in shots decreases further in indoor and low-light shooting conditions. Also, the DxOMark team has spotted that the Nokia 8 suffers from a very noticeable loss of sharpness in the field, though strong softness often visible near frame edges.

The Nokia 8 uses contrast detection, phase detection, and laser technologies. This mix, the DxO team reports, enables the autofocus system of the smartphone to produce accurate results in most situations. However, the results are comparatively poor in lower light. It is also noticed that the exposure and colour are decent when the smartphone uses the built-in dual-LED flash, though some noticeable red-eye effect exists especially in flash portrait shots.

Despite the fact that the dual camera setup of the Nokia 8 supports 2x zoom, DxOMark recommends the optical zoom factor only for emergency situations as there isn’t any dedicated telephoto lens or a higher resolution secondary image sensor to maintain a balance between zooming and non-zooming results. Nevertheless, the bokeh mode that blurs the background to highlight the foreground subjects is claimed to perform on a higher level than most of the competing offerings. There are some artifacts visible, but the mode delivers pleasant bokeh results.

Coming to the video results, DxOMark engineers highlight low autofocus and stabilisation sub-scores. The stabilisation system on the Nokia 8 is said to perform on a quite similar level as the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge that was launched back in 2015. Similarly, the DxOMark team has observed that exposure stepping on the smartphone is noticeable when the illumination changes during recording, accompanies low levels of details. Having said that, video clips recorded from the Nokia 8 are found to show good target exposure and colour rendering in bright light and well-lit indoor conditions.

The dual camera setup of the Nokia 8 (Review) includes two 13-megapixel image sensors – while one is an RGB sensor and comes with optical image stabilisation (OIS), the other one is a monochrome sensor. Both are packed with an aperture of f/2.0, 1.12-micron pixel elements, phase detection autofocus, a 76.9-degree wide-angle lens, phase detection autofocus (PDAF), dual-tone LED flash, and an IR rangefinder. A 13-megapixel image sensor is available on the front with PDAF, 1.12-micron pixels, an f/2.0 aperture, and a 78.4-degree wide-angle lens. The smartphone also has OZO Audio technology that enables spatial 360-degree audio recording using three embedded microphones.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ have been leaked in new sets of renders, purporting to provide a 360-degree view of Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphone duo. The renders indicate the fingerprint sensor will be shifted from where it was on the Galaxy S8 – adjacent to the rear camera – to below the rear camera lens. The design has otherwise largely remained the same from the previous generation. Alongside, another render shows an abandoned, more ambitious design for the Galaxy S9, while alleged front panels of the smartphone duo have also made it to the Internet.

Tipster @OnLeaks has shared the leaked renders of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Do note that these are CAD-based renders and are not actual images of the smartphones. We had earlier reported that the Galaxy S9 will have an improved Iris scanner this time around.

The design of the Galaxy S9, in the OnLeaks renders shared by 91Mobiles, are similar to the Galaxy S8 (Review) we saw last year. There is a bezel-less display on the front, which might have slightly thinner bezels compared to last year’s Galaxy S8. Renders also show that the Galaxy S9 will not sport a dual-camera setup on the rear, a feature that appears to be exclusive to the Galaxy S9+.

There is also a change in the position of the fingerprint sensor. While it remains on the rear of the device, the sensor has been shifted from the right of the camera lens to below it. This might be a decision taken to make it more ergonomic for the user. The sighting of a fingerprint sensor on the back also means that an in-screen fingerprint reader won’t be featured on the Samsung Galaxy S9.

A heart-rate sensor and a single-LED flash can also be seen on the right side of the rear camera sensor. Renders reveal a USB Type-C port, primary microphone, loudspeaker, and a 3.5mm jack on the bottom. There is also a volume rocker on the left and a power key on the right of the Galaxy S9. The phone is said to have a 5.7-inch display, and feature a bottom bezel just 0.1mm thinner than the Samsung Galaxy S8. The smartphone is said to measure 147.6×68.7×8.4mm.

As for the leaked OnLeaks renders of the Samsung Galaxy S9+ shared by MySmartPrice, we see an identical design, except for the use of vertical dual rear camera setup. The phone measures 157.7×73.8×8.5mm and comes with a 6.1-inch screen, with top and bottom bezels said to be 0.1mm thinner than the Galaxy S8+.

Separately, Tipster Ice Universe has shared a set of renders showing what are claimed to be the smaller-bezel design Samsung abandoned for the Galaxy S9, alongside the design it is going ahead with, which look similar to the Galaxy S8. The tipster also shared an image of the purported front panels of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, which again show a design similar to the current Galaxy S-Series flagships.

Days before Halloween, Instagram has added an enhanced camera format called Superzoom that helps you dramatise your videos. The photo-sharing service has also brought a list of Halloween-centric face filters and stickers that will be available until November 1. The new features are already available for Android and iOS devices with Instagram version 20.0, which is already on the App Store and Google Play.

First in the list of new updates that the Instagram app for Android and iOS has received is the Superzoom feature, which will let add some fun to your simple video along with a dramatic background sound. You can opt for the new camera format by tapping the Superzoom option – next to Boomerang – under the record button. Once enabled, you just need to hit the shutter button to add a three-second, automatic zoom in effect with suspenseful music to your clips. You can use the front or rear camera to add the ultrazoom effect to your shots, and the feature can be applied even to the videos you’d like to share in direct messages.

The Superzoom feature is an extension to Boomerang, which was debuted as a native app in 2015 and eventually arrived as a feature on the Instagram app in November 2016. It was introduced to let users create looping videos – a competitive move to rival Snapchat.

Instagram has additionally added the face filters that allows you to transform your face or one of your loved ones’ face into a zombie, vampire, flying bat or hide it under mysterious fog to celebrate the day with horror. Likewise, there are Halloween stickers that you can add to your existing photos and videos.

In September, Instagram announced that it reached the benchmark of 800 million users. The Facebook-owned service has a base of 500 million daily active users that need to be served with new features — like the latest ones — to continue their engagements.

Sony Xperia XA1 Plus has been launched at IFA 2017 and comes with 23MP rear camera

Sony Xperia XA1 Plus, a new mid-range smartphone from the company has been announced at the ongoing IFA 2017. Sony also launched two new phones to its premium family which are the Sony Xperia XZ1, XZ1 Compact at IFA, which will ship with Android8.0 Oreo. The mid-range Xperia XA1 Plus will continue to run on Android Nougat, though it will eventually get upgraded to the new software as well.

The Xperia A1 Plus is a mid-range smartphone offering a 23MP rear camera, 5.5-inch full HD resolution display and better audio performance from Sony technologies. The phone continues with the fingerprint sensor being embedded on the power button, which has become a trademark feature for Sony’s Android phones. Sony is launching this smartphone in three colours: Blue, Black and Gold. On the design front, Sony says the phone has “diamond cut-like finish on the top and bottom” and sports aluminium sides and a matt finish.

Key specifications of the Sony Xperia XA1 Plus are: 5.5-inch Full HD 1080p resolution display with Sony’s Image Enhance Technology. Dimensions of the phone are 155 x 75 x 8.7mm and it is powered by the Mediatek Helio P20 octa-core 64-bit processor clocked at 2.3GHz coupled with Mali T-880 GPU. The phone has 4GB on board RAM, 32GB total storage and up to 256GB SD card support.

The main camera on this smartphone is a 23MP one with a 1/ 2.3-inch Exmor RS image sensor from Sony. The rear camera has a Hybrid Autofocus, f/2.0 aperture, 5x Clear Image Zoom, along with Anti-shaking features though it does not specifically mention if the camera has OIS. The front camera is an 8MP one with f/2.0 aperture.

Connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.2 wireless, WiFi, 4G LTE, etc. Battery on board is 3430mAh with Qnovo Adaptive Charging. On the audio front, Sony says the phone has their ClearAudio+ audio technology and Smart Amplifier for a louder, clear audio experience. Sony says the phone will roll out from Autumn 2017, though an India specific pricing or launch date is not yet confirmed.

Nokia 8 has finally been launched, marking an end to the countless leaks and giving us the first true flagship Nokia Android phone to take on the likes of iPhone 7 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S8 (and the upcoming iPhone 8 and Galaxy Note 8). The Nokia 8 camera was at the front and centre of the London launch event; in fact, this is the first device developed by HMD Global after signing a partnership with Carl Zeiss last month. The 13-megapixel dual rear sensors as well as the 13-megapixel front camera of the Nokia phone both support the (unfortunately named) “bothie” functionality. Other Nokia 8 specifications to look forward to include the Snapdragon 835 processor, 64GB internal storage, and support for Android O.

The Nokia 8 will be available “globally” in early September, priced at equivalent of EUR 599 (approximately Rs. 45,000). An HMD Global representative told Gadgets 360 the Nokia 8 India launch will be in early October, and the Nokia 8 price in India will be known closer to launch.

 

The unibody Nokia 8 is built out of 6000-series aluminium and it will be available in glossy Polished Copper and Polished Blue colours, as well as matte Tempered Blue and Steel finishes. The Nokia 8 is IP54 rated, which means it is splash-proof.

Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer, HMD Global explained that the Nokia 8 is fitted with an elaborate heat management solution: a copper pipe that runs from the upper right corner of the device to the lower left has liquid evaporating in the middle, and condensing on the edges. A graphite shield enables heat transfer to the aluminium unibody and its eventual dissipation to the air.

The Nokia 8 comes with dual 13-megapixel f/2.0 RGB and monochrome sensors at the back, and while that setup has been seen on several other phones, HMD is betting big on “bothies” – the ability to capture images and videos from front and rear cameras at the same time.

Apart from capturing still images from both sensors at the same time and fusing them into a single picture, the Camera app on the Nokia 8 will let you stream these ‘bothies’ as full-HD live videos to Facebook and YouTube. HMD says it worked closely with Qualcomm to enable Dual-Sight video streaming on the Nokia 8, while minimising the thermal impact of the processing required.

HMD is also leveraging its relationship with Nokia to bring some technology from the latter’s 360 VR camera to the Nokia 8. The smartphone comes with high dynamic range microphones, which enables it to record surround sound using Nokia Ozo Audio algorithms. HMD says its software encoding will preserve the virtual surround sound even when users share these videos on social media.

At this stage, Nokia 8’s Dual-Sight streaming and Ozo Audio recording features will be available only via the stock Camera app on the phone and won’t be opened up to third-party apps.

The front camera is the same 13-megapixel RGB shooter seen on the rear, and both front and rear cameras are capable of recording 4K video on their own. The Nokia 8 rear camera comes with laser autofocus and dual-tone LED flash.

As for other key Nokia 8 specifications, there’s the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC (four 2.45GHz Kyro cores and four 1.8GHz Kyro cores), which powers nearly all other Android flagships of this generation. There is just one variant – with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, though the phone will release in single SIM and hybrid dual SIM options, depending upon the markets. It comes with support for microSD cards of up to 256GB capacity and a 3090mAh battery.

The Nokia 8 has a 5.3-inch 2K LCD display with Gorilla Glass 5 protection. It features USB 3.1 Type-C connectivity as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone is just 4.6mm thick at the edges, and 7.9mm thick at the height of its camera module. It was rumoured that the Nokia 8 might ship with Android O out of the box, and while an HMD Global representative confirmed that the company is in advanced stages of testing Android O build for the Nokia 8, the smartphone will ship with Android 7.1.1 out of the box.

“One of the fastest ways of getting [Android] O will be to get our new flagship,” HMD Global’s Sarvikas added.

Asus ZenFone 4 Launch Set for August 17, Dual Camera Setup Confirmed

While the press invites for ZenFone 4 earlier suggested that the smartphone will be launched on August 19 in Philippines, the company has now shared a new teaser for the handset and said that it will be unveiled ahead of that date in Taiwan – on August 17. Notably, the latest teaser for the smartphone gives us a glimpse at the dual camera setup at the back of the smartphone.

While the official teaser, posted by the company through a Facebook post, doesn’t reveal any particular details about the Asus ZenFone 4, it does show the smartphone bearing dual cameras at the back. This shouldn’t come as a surprise as the company has already launched Asus ZenFone 4 Max smartphone from the series in Russia, which also sports a dual camera setup.

Asus is planning to launch three models of the ZenFone 4 series, i.e. ZenFone 4 Pro, ZenFone 4, and ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro, as per a report by Digitimes. The report suggests that the ZenFone 4 Pro comes with a 5.7-inch display and will be powered by a Snapdragon 835 SoC. On the other hand, ZenFone 4 and Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro have been said to be the models targeted at mid-tier and entry-level segments respectively.

To recall, two other smartphones from the ZenFone 4 series, namely ZenFone 4 Selfie and ZenFone 4V, have also been tipped to be launched by the company. As per previous leaks, the ZenFone 4 Selfie is expected to run Android 7.1.1 Nougat out-of-the-box and sport a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) display. The smartphone has been tipped to be powered by a Snapdragon 625 SoC coupled with Adreno 506 GPU and 4GB of RAM. ZenFone 4 comes with 32GB of built-in storage. The selfie-focused smartphone has been tipped to pack a 16-megapixel rear camera and a 12-megapixel front sensor – both with 4K support.
