Marshall McLuhan, man who ‘saw the internet coming,’ gets his very own Google Doodle

Google’s Doodle have a fondness for celebrating legendary figures, but today’s person of interest feels more appropriate for the venue than most. The company hails Canadian professor, philosopher, and media sage Marshall McLuhan as a man who “saw the internet coming — and predicted just how much impact it would have.”

McLuhan’s philosophies were built on four pillars that theorized society is shaped by technology and the way in which information is shared. He broke history down into different eras tracing the acoustic age, the literary age, the print age, and the electronic age.

Today’s Doodle honors his 106th birthday by animating McLuhan’s division of history into colorful little GIFs.

Along with his many books, McLuhan gave the world a number of wonderful quotes, many of them listed on his Wikipedia page. Perhaps McLuhan’s most famous quote pertains to his belief that the way in which someone receives information is more important than what that information actually is: “The medium is the message.”

Sandford Fleming’s 190th Birthday: Inventor of World Standard Time Gets a Google Doodle

Google has honoured Sandford Fleming, a Canadian inventor and engineer of Scottish birth known for his invention of worldwide standard time, with a doodle.

“Today’s doodle reflects Fleming’s legacy on this, the 190th anniversary of his birth,” Google said in a statement on Saturday.

It is widely believed that Sandford Fleming missing a train in Ireland due to a mistake printed in a timetable ultimately led to his brilliant idea that altered time as we know it.

Sandford Fleming was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, in 1827. This was a period when regions used solar time to set their own clocks.

Solar time worked well enough until trains came along and the need for standardised time arose.

Following his missed train in 1876, Sandford Fleming proposed a worldwide standard time at a meeting of the Royal Canadian Institute on February, 8, 1879.

Sandford Fleming advocated for dividing the world into 24 time zones beginning at the Greenwich Meridian and spaced at 15 degree intervals.

His proposal gave way to the International Prime Meridian Conference which convened in 1884 and was attended by 25 nations.

It was here that Sandford Fleming’s system of international standard time was adopted.

Sandford Fleming was also known for helping build the Intercontinental Railway, serving as chief engineer of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and designing Canada’s first postage stamp.

November 14, birthday of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, is celebrated as Children’s Day in India and Google is continuing its tradition of featuring the doodle by winner of its Doodle 4 Google contest on google.co.in on Children’s Day. “Happy Children’s Day! Meet the Doodle for Google winner!”, says the hover text when you hover your mouse over the doodle image, and search results for “Children’s Day in India” are shown when you click the doodle on desktop or tap it on mobile.

The doodle featured on the Google India home page on the occasion of Children’s Day 2016 is that by 11-year-old Pune girl Anvita Prashant Telang, who was announced as the national winner of the “Doodle 4 Google” contest last week. The sixth standard student from Vibgyor High School in Balewadi area was chosen for her Doodle submission on the theme titled “If I could teach anyone anything, it would be”.

Twelve doodles made by kids across India were shortlisted as national finalists of the 8th edition of Google’s annual Doodle 4 Google (D4G) competition. The entries that came from over 50 cities across the country were evaluated on artistic merit, creativity and theme communication as well as their unique and novel approach to the Doodle. All D4G participants are grouped into three categories: Group 1 comprising students from Class 1 to 3; Group 2 with students from Class 4 to 6; and Group 3 with students from Class 7 to 10. Google then invited everyone to help choose the winner by voting for their favourite doodle to select one winner from each group. Online voting was open from November 2 to November 2010.

“With ‘Doodle 4 Google’ competition, we aim to promote creativity, passion and imagination in younger users. We congratulate Anvita for being judged as the winner this year,” Sapna Chadha, Head of Marketing, Google India, said in a statement.
