Apple iCloud Halves Price of 2TB Storage Tier, Family Sharing Arriving in iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra

At its WWDC developer conference on Monday, Apple took the stage to announce a major overhaul to its various operating systems. It announced a new and improved iOS 11, in addition to macOS High Sierra, watchOS 4, and a better tvOS with Amazon Prime Video support. While these updates are major, the Cupertino giant also brought some minor changes to its iCloud storage plans.

Apple iCloud has removed the 1TB storage tier, replacing it with the 2TB tier. Formerly priced at $19.99, it is now available for the $9.99 per month price of the 1TB tier in the US. Meanwhile, in India, Apple has followed the same move, replacing the 1TB option with the 2TB storage tier, while bringing its price down from Rs. 1,300 to Rs. 650. All of the above plans are currently live and can be purchased right away. Customers currently on the 1TB plan will be upgraded to 2TB. Additionally, Apple has also introduced Family Sharing to the iCloud storage for up to six family members who can use a single storage plan.

While the price of the upper storage limit has been halved, lower storage tiers like 50GB and 200GB have not been changed. The 50GB storage plan still costs $0.99 and 200GB at $2.99. The iCloud subscriber plans in India, too, retain the same price for the aforementioned storage limits (Rs. 65/month for 50GB and Rs. 190/month for 200GB). Furthermore, the same 5GB storage is still continuing for the free subscribers of iCloud storage plan.

Also with the debut of iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra, Apple will be introducing Family Sharing for the iCloud storage plans. Up to six family members will be able to use a single monthly iCloud storage subscription plan without any extra costs. This will only apply to plans giving storage of 200GB onwards. This feature will be available with the rollout of iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra later this fall.

Samsung Unveils Family Hub 2.0 Internet-Connected Refrigerators and More at CES 2017

Samsung Electronics has introduced a new member to its series of connected refrigerators with Family Hub 2.0 at CES 2017. Called the Family Hub 2.0 refrigerators, the new series expands the smart refrigerators models from four to 10. Alongside, Samsung has also introduced a new line of smart built-in cooking appliances and a new four-in-one washer/dryer that is connectible with Samsung’s Smart Home app.

At CES 2017 that kicked off this week, technology giant Samsung expanded the portfolio of its refrigerators, washing machine+dryers and other kitchen appliances with the launch of new products. Starting with the Family Hub 2.0 refrigerators, the new Internet-connected devices from Samsung sport upgrades over the previous Family Hub 1.0 with new features like View Inside Cameras, improved shopping list, grocery buying via MasterCard and Recipe browsing among others. The new and improved View Inside Cameras can detect the food items kept inside the refrigerator that need to be replenished along with their images. The Recipes app, powered by AllRecipes, will show enlarged text on the screen and read the recipes aloud.

With the Family Hub 2.0 platform, family members can create their individual profiles on refrigerators and synchronise them, while also allowing them to use their profile picture/ avatars. The 21.5-inch display packed on the door will work as a digital bulletin board where users can handwrite seamlessly. You can also dictate commands to the refrigerator to read weather and time, or to add some item to the shopping list.
Samsung has also collaborated with partners like Grubhub, Nomiku, Glympse, Ring, Spotify, and iHeartRadio for other home entertainment, security services. Samsung’s Family Hub 2.0 will be pushed out across a full range of 3-Door and 4-Door French Door refrigerator models as well as the existing 4-Door Flex lineup.

Talking about the home appliances, Samsung has also introduced its new smart built-in cooking line at CES 2017. The new product lineup includes various models of built-in Double and Single Wall Ovens, built-in Gas Cooktops, built-in Induction Cooktops, built-in Electric Cooktops, and built-in Range Hoods. Samsung has equipped all its built-in appliances with Wi-Fi connectivity, so the users can remotely start, control and turn off their ovens, as well as monitor their cooktop and range hood from their smartphones. In addition to it, Bluetooth connectivity syncs the cooktop with Samsung’s Range Hood that can automatically start the hood’s fans or lights when using the cooktop.

Finally, Samsung’s new four-in-one washer+dryer saves the day with its five cubic feet of laundry capacity and a second one-cubic foot washer on top, allowing you to do two loads at once. Named the FlexWash + FlexDry laundry system, Samsung boasts of its the Delicate Rack dryer zone, which automatically adjusts the dryer temperature based on the clothe fabric, while still drying clothes in the primary dryer. Obviously, as a part of its connected devices, Samsung’s washer+dryer can be controlled via the Samsung SmartHome app that allows remote operations when you aren’t home.

Moto X5 Rumoured With iPhone X-Like Notch; Moto Z6, Moto G6 Family Leaked Ahead of MWC

While companies like OnePlus and Vivo already opted for proprietary face unlock features to take on Apple’s iPhone X, Lenovo brand Moto brand is now reportedly preparing an even closer iPhone X competitor that would sport a notch and dual camera setup on the front. The new Moto offering, rumoured to be called Moto X5, is expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 in Barcelona next month. The company is also purportedly developing the Moto Z3, Moto Z3 Play, and its first 5G Moto Mod alongside three new Moto G variants, leaked as the Moto G6, Moto G6 Plus, and Moto G6 Play. All of these smartphones have been tipped in a leaked renders.

As featured in the first of the leaked marketing render, courtesy Droid Life, the Moto X5 appears to be one of the closest Android-running rivals of the iPhone X. The smartphone has a thin-bezel display panel that has a room for the frontal notch, similar to the one featured on the iPhone X, with two camera sensors on either sides of an earpiece. The camera sensors are likely to be used to take enhanced selfies as well as to enable face unlocking functionality with some advancements over the Face Unlock debuted on the OnePlus 5T and some recent Vivo smartphones, including the Vivo X20 and Vivo V7+. Also, the leaked render points to Moto’s Smart AI and Moto XP that would be some artificial intelligence (AI) powered features to distinguish the user experience.

Interestingly, the rumoured Moto X5 doesn’t appear to have any physical or touch-sensitive button on the front but a white on-screen button very well appears in the leaked render. The on-screen button may offer gesture support to help users navigate from one screen to another. There are also chances that the smartphone could feature an under-display fingerprint sensor to take on the Vivo X20 Plus UD that was lately spotted on TENAA. Besides, the back of the Moto X5 seems to a panel similar to the one came with the Moto X4 last year. It comes with rear-facing two camera sensors and an LED flash.

If we believe the specifications mentioned by the Droid Life folks, the Moto X5 will come with a 5.9-inch FHD+ display that would sport 18:9 aspect ratio.

Similar to the Moto X5, the Moto Z3 and Moto Z3 Play are also leaked by Droid Life in some renders. Both the new Moto Z series handsets are said to have a 6-inch FHD+ curved display that is touted to be “borderless”. The company is also rumoured to be in plans to launch a third Moto Z3 handset with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. However, it is unclear whether the same SoC would power the Moto Z3 and Moto Z3 Play as well.

Having said that, the new Moto Z series smartphones appear to have a single on-screen button on the front – similar to the reported Moto X5. The company is also rumoured to be working on a new Moto Mod that would enable 5G connectivity on the new Moto Z family. The 5G Mod is notably mentioned by Moto back in December 2016 to offer super-fast wireless connectivity. It may have a built-in battery pack to make the attached smartphone last for a day, despite offering a high-speed data experience.

In addition to the Moto X5 and the new Moto Z line, folks at Droid Life have also leaked three renders showing the Moto G6, Moto G6 Plus, and Moto G6 Play. The new Moto G6 series appears to sport a 3D glass back – similar to the one featured on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge back in April 2015. Among other models, the Moto G6 is rumoured to have a 5.7-inch FHD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio and a Snapdragon 450 SoC, coupled with 3GB and 4GB RAM options. The smartphone is also reported to carry 32GB and 64GB storage options. Further, it has 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel camera sensors on the back, while a 16-megapixel camera sensor is featured on the front.

The Moto G6 Plus, on the other hand, is rumoured to have a 5.93-inch display with the same full-HD+ (1080×2160 pixels) resolution as the Moto G6. It is likely to have the same camera specifications. However, the Plus model will come with a Snapdragon 630 SoC paired with 6GB of RAM, as reported by the online source. The Moto G6 Plus, unlike the other two models, is rumoured to have a 5.7-inch HD display and a massive, 4000mAh battery. Importantly, all the three Moto G series smartphones appear to have a fingerprint scanner on the front that is missing from the new Moto X and Moto Z models.

The Moto G6 is expected to go on sale in the US for around $240 (approximately Rs. 15,300), while the Moto G6 Plus is rumoured to be available at $330 (roughly Rs. 21,000). The latter will come in Deep Indigo, Nimbus, and Dark Lake colour options. Price and availability of all the new Moto smartphones are expected to be announced following their debut.
