LG Unveils Fingerprint Sensor That Sits Under a Smartphone Display

Apple began pioneering smartphone fingerprint sensors in its smartphones a few years ago, with the iPhone 5s. Since then, numerous manufacturers have introduced fingerprint sensors on their smartphones. Now, LG is doing the pioneering, and is touting its new fingerprint sensor that sits under the display. This means that when you will place your finger on the cover glass of the display, the under glass fingerprint sensor module would automatically identify your fingerprint.

Announced on Monday by LG Innotek CEO Jongseok Park, the under glass fingerprint sensor module will not only eliminate dedicated buttons, pads, or other elements for fingerprint recognition, but will also help make the smartphone more water resistant by reducing the number of openings. This might also result in slimmer devices in future.

LG Innotek says it has cut 0.01-inch (0.3mm) slot on the back of the cover display glass and has installed a fingerprint sensor in it with “supreme precision and combination technology.”

It has been mentioned that the fingerprint sensor module has a false acceptance rate (FAR) of 0.002 percent. LG adds that the adherence side of both the glass and the fingerprint sensor is 0.0098-inch (0.25mm) thick and can resist the impact of a 130 gram steel ball dropped from 7.9-inch.

“We are concentrating on all our resources to the development of the differentiated technology based on the creation of customer values. We will continue to provide convenient, safe, and pleasant user experiences by launching innovative product,” said Changhwan Kim, Head of Research and Development Centre LG.

LG has not yet revealed when exactly we would start seeing this technology in smartphones or other devices. However, this might happen soon as a company spokesperson has said to The Korea Times that it is in talks with some smartphone brands to commercialize the product within this year. “We are in talks with some handset manufacturers to commercialise the new modules within the year.” The company in December last year was tipped to supply Oled displays for upcoming iPhone models.

The multi-year contract for 1,700 fingerprint scanners will see more than 900 units delivered in 2019.

LIVETOUCH QUATTRO features an integrated display that provides feedback before and during fingerprint capture, ensuring that any user, regardless of their level of knowledge, language or culture, can capture fingerprints quickly and accurately. Its compact size design allows easy integration into various border police capture systems.

“The acceptance of biometric applications is highly determined by the user-friendliness of the systems,” explains Roberto Wolfer, one of the founders and CEOs of JENETRIC. “Therefore it plays an important role that the devices interact actively and in real time with the user. We are pleased that the German Federal Police has taken this aspect into account and that our devices are now being used at all airports in Germany.”

The European Union recently finalized specifications for the biometrics used in its Entry/Exit System.

LIVETOUCH QUATTRO Compact was recently certified by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). The BSI tested and certified the image quality of the device according to technical guideline TR-03121 for biometrics in government applications.

It seems that Samsung is sticking to its plan of implementing new features to its mid-range A-series first and the most recent rumor is a testament for that even though it sounds like a long shot.

According to a Chinese leakster, Samsung is working on an upper-mid-range Galaxy A10 smartphone with an under-display fingerprint reader. The tweet doesn’t reveal anything else although, this is not the first time we hear of a Galaxy A10 coming.

The same account on Twitter reported that Samsung is working on a Galaxy A model powered by a Snapdragon 845 SoC. The Galaxy A10 seems like the perfect fit for the FP reader and the flagship SoC given that the Galaxy A8s, for example, is rocking a Snapdragon 710.

We hope that more evidence will pile up soon because at this point we are just speculating and guessing.

vivo Y93 arrives with a fingerprint scanner on the back

It is not always easy distinguishing one mid-range vivo smartphone from another. Today, the vivo Y93 arrived in India with a Helio P22 chipset and a fingerprint scanner on the back. This is not the original vivo Y93, launched on November 1 – this is the body of vivo Y95 with the soul of the vivo Y93s.

The Indian version of vivo Y93 has a 6.22” LCD screen with HD+ resolution and 19:9 ratio. There is a waterdrop notch on the top holding an 8 MP shooter with an f/1.8 lens. The main camera setup has a 13 MP f/2.2 module and a secondary 2 MP depth sensor with an f/2.4 aperture. The phone has 4 GB RAM and 32 GB storage.

The biggest reason to get the vivo Y93 is the battery – it comes with a 4,030 mAh power cell, dual SIM slot, and VoLTE. Sure there is the older micro USB port, but at least vivo is staying loyal to the 3.5 mm audio jack. OS is Android Oreo with Funtouch 4.5 on top. Although the device is already listed at vivo’s Indian e-store, price and availability is yet to be revealed.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Triple Camera Setup Details Tipped, Side-Mounted Fingerprint Scanner Expected

Samsung is expected to launch three variants of the Galaxy S10 next year, and the unveil is largely expected at MWC 2019. The most premium variant is said to sport a triple camera setup, and today’s fresh leak corroborates that claim while also revealing more details on the camera. Furthermore, the premium and the mid-variant are expected to sport an in-display fingerprint scanner, while the entry-level variant is expected to sport a fingerprint sensor mounted on the side, if recent leaks are to be believed.

German site AllAboutSamsung reports that the company is expected to launch a triple camera setup on the most premium Samsung Galaxy S10 (Beyond 2). The main camera will be at 12-megapixel with f/1.5 to f/2.4 variable aperture, a 16-megapixel super-wide-angle lens (123 degrees) at f/1.9 aperture, and a zoom lens with 13-megapixel sensor and f/2.4 aperture. The main camera is expected to be in the middle, the zoom lens will sit to its left, while the super-wide-angle lens will sit to its right. The report states that the wide-angle lens will not come with autofocus or OIS.

The two other variants of the Samsung Galaxy S10 (Beyond 0 and Beyond 1) will come with a dual camera setup – one with a 12-megapixel main lens with variable aperture (f/1.5 to f/2.4), and another super-wide-angle lens at 16-megapixel with f/1.9 aperture.

A separate report from The Bell suggests that while the premium two variants Beyond 1 and Beyond 2 will sport in-display fingerprint scanner, the Beyond 0 device, which is expected to be the cheapest of the lot, will sport a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. The report also states that Beyond 1 and Beyond 2 are successors of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9+, while the Beyond 0 device is a new entrant with trimmed down features and a relatively cheaper price tag.

In any case, we recommend you take all leaks with a pinch of salt, as nothing is official as of yet, and the Galaxy S10 official launch is too far away. Recent reports suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S10 will replace the iris scanner for in-display fingerprint scanner, and introduce 3D Face Unlock as well, as an alternate authentication method.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ have been leaked in new sets of renders, purporting to provide a 360-degree view of Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphone duo. The renders indicate the fingerprint sensor will be shifted from where it was on the Galaxy S8 – adjacent to the rear camera – to below the rear camera lens. The design has otherwise largely remained the same from the previous generation. Alongside, another render shows an abandoned, more ambitious design for the Galaxy S9, while alleged front panels of the smartphone duo have also made it to the Internet.

Tipster @OnLeaks has shared the leaked renders of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Do note that these are CAD-based renders and are not actual images of the smartphones. We had earlier reported that the Galaxy S9 will have an improved Iris scanner this time around.

The design of the Galaxy S9, in the OnLeaks renders shared by 91Mobiles, are similar to the Galaxy S8 (Review) we saw last year. There is a bezel-less display on the front, which might have slightly thinner bezels compared to last year’s Galaxy S8. Renders also show that the Galaxy S9 will not sport a dual-camera setup on the rear, a feature that appears to be exclusive to the Galaxy S9+.

There is also a change in the position of the fingerprint sensor. While it remains on the rear of the device, the sensor has been shifted from the right of the camera lens to below it. This might be a decision taken to make it more ergonomic for the user. The sighting of a fingerprint sensor on the back also means that an in-screen fingerprint reader won’t be featured on the Samsung Galaxy S9.

A heart-rate sensor and a single-LED flash can also be seen on the right side of the rear camera sensor. Renders reveal a USB Type-C port, primary microphone, loudspeaker, and a 3.5mm jack on the bottom. There is also a volume rocker on the left and a power key on the right of the Galaxy S9. The phone is said to have a 5.7-inch display, and feature a bottom bezel just 0.1mm thinner than the Samsung Galaxy S8. The smartphone is said to measure 147.6×68.7×8.4mm.

As for the leaked OnLeaks renders of the Samsung Galaxy S9+ shared by MySmartPrice, we see an identical design, except for the use of vertical dual rear camera setup. The phone measures 157.7×73.8×8.5mm and comes with a 6.1-inch screen, with top and bottom bezels said to be 0.1mm thinner than the Galaxy S8+.

Separately, Tipster Ice Universe has shared a set of renders showing what are claimed to be the smaller-bezel design Samsung abandoned for the Galaxy S9, alongside the design it is going ahead with, which look similar to the Galaxy S8. The tipster also shared an image of the purported front panels of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, which again show a design similar to the current Galaxy S-Series flagships.
