Cowboys’ Down-Roster Battles: Who Will Be The Last Quarterback To Make The Roster?

The first place to look if you are thinking about Cowboys’ roster battles is our own 2017 Dallas Cowboys Interactive Roster Builder. This handy tool is kept up to date by OCC, and is well worth the visit because it shows that roster battles aren’t always within position groups, but across groups. For example, keeping a third quarterback or a tenth or eleventh defensive lineman means going light somewhere else. We also know that roster churn is a year round business, so there are likely to be some new names by training camp, and potentially even after final cut down day. With that caveat, let’s begin.

Part IV – Quarterback

These are the players currently on the roster. We’ll lead with the locks, followed by the probables, then get to the fight for the last spot.

Locks

  • Dak Prescott. What a difference a year makes! Was Dak Prescott even a “lock” last year at this time? He was technically battling for a third-string role with Jameill Showers, who had spent the previous season on the practice squad. Anyone remember this post from last year, after Kellen Moore got hurt, when there was an actual debate over whether the Cowboys should have Showers or Prescott be the primary backup to Tony Romo? (For the record, Showers got 62% of the vote for the primary backup spot over Prescott’s 38%). From that moment on, Dak Prescott seized his opportunity, and totally transformed the Dallas Cowboys’ prospects going forward.

Here’s my final Dak and Zeke Report from last year. It links to each weekly report, which may be one of the best ways to recount Dak’s amazing season. You can also read my case for why he’s the NFL’s most valuable player.

  • Kellen Moore. While many have doubts about Mr. Moore as the Cowboys’ primary backup quarterback, it doesn’t appear the people who count – Scott Linehan and Jason Garrett – share those doubts. He’s on a one-year, $775,000 contract, which is actually $140,000 more than Dak Prescott’s contract this year. Together, they make a whopping $1,410,000 this season (though Dak will likely earn an NFL bonus again this year).

It is theoretically possible that Moore could be unseated by one of the two quarterbacks below, but it’s highly unlikely.

Probables

There are no probables, as Moore is really a lock.

Fighting For That Last Spot

Will the Cowboys carry a third quarterback on the 53-man roster? Not likely. These are the two candidates.

  • Cooper Rush. Our own Tom Ryle has Cooper Rush as his pet cat, so let’s see what Tom has to say about him.

It’s time for the Cowboys to correct the missed opportunity they had last season. I’m referring, of course, to how they tried to find the backup quarterback of the future, but overshot the mark and got their starter in Dak Prescott. Now, UDFA Cooper Rush has a chance to do the nearly impossible: Get Scott Linehan to move on from Kellen Moore as the QB2.

Moore is regularly praised by the staff and Prescott for being like an extra coach or offensive coordinator on the sideline. That’s all great, but the idea of the backup quarterback is for them to play competently on the field. Moore has had limited opportunities, and really hasn’t displayed any particularly convincing ability. And there is no getting around the fact he is listed (perhaps generously) as being 6-0 and 200 lbs, which is just kinda small for a quarterback, especially if they are not exceptionally mobile. Rush has a much more typical size for an NFL passer at 6-3 and 228 lbs. Otherwise, he is described almost exactly like Moore, right down to the suspect arm strength. For a team that probably needs to upgrade at QB2, Rush offers a better version of what they have already. He may be fated for the practice squad, at least his rookie year, but that would be a win for now and allow him to come back and fight for the job next season.

  • Zac Dysert. Dysert was snapped up by the Cowboys as soon as he was cut by Arizona in June. He’s bounced around practice squads since he was drafted by Denver in the seventh round in 2013. Because he’s been in the NFL for three years, he isn’t eligible for a practice squad spot any more. Likely just a camp arm, but one with more experience.

Analysis

This is one of the easier roster areas to predict. The Cowboys have alternated between keeping three or two quarterbacks the last four years. When they kept three, it was because they were trying to groom a young backup. There’s much less need for that now. Expect the Cowboys to only keep two QBs to spend the roster spot elsewhere.

Do you aspire to work in SBI, India’s largest bank? State Bank of India (SBI) is hiring specialists for its marketing department on a contractual basis. SBI has extended the last day to apply online for the positions, according to an advertisement on the bank’s website. The last date to register and pay fees online is June 2, 2017. SBI is hiring one senior vice president (brand/media/research), one vice president (marketing communications), one vice president (digital marketing), one vice president (media strategy & operations) and one senior manager (digital marketing). Selection will be based on short-listing – based on their qualification, experience and overall suitability – and personal interview, SBI said. The banking major has also relaxed the required experience by two years for two vice president roles – marketing communications and media strategy & operations, it said.

Candidates applying for the position of senior vice president (brand/media/research) should have a minimum 8 years of experience, “with career experience either in BFSI/ Telecom or any other large service sector”. Graduates in any discipline can apply and those with MBA in Marketing will be preferred, SBI said.

Without divulging the salary being offered on these roles, SBI said: “The compensation package would comprise of fixed and variable components but not a limiting factor for a suitable candidate.”

An application fee (non-refundable) of Rs. 600 is applicable, which needs to be paid online.

Some of the responsibilities of the senior vice presidents listed by SBI included:

Strategising and implementation of effective marketing plans for different Business Units in line with their business objectives
Developing sharp marketing briefs, based on compelling market/consumer insights
Managing different agency partners (creative, media, research etc.) and other vendors, to get them to deliver high quality output within defined marketing budget and timelines

Also, for the position of vice president (digital marketing), SBI is looking for candidates with MBA from a recognised university and a minimum experience of eight years “in varied roles including Digital Marketing. Work experience in a Public Sector Bank, preferably with awareness of SBI work culture and management practices.” Among other skills, SBI has mentioned core experience in product marketing using digital media platforms with specific experience in search and display, SEO, SEM and programmatic.

Art history A-level saved at last minute

Campaigners for art history A-level say they are “absolutely thrilled” by a late decision to save the subject, which was set to be discontinued.

Exam board Pearson has confirmed plans to develop a new history of art A-level for teaching from next September.

October’s decision by the AQA board to drop the subject provoked an outcry from experts who argued “society had never required its insights more”.

“It’s amazing – just about in the nick of time,” said teacher Sarah Phillips.

Ms Phillips, from state sixth form Godalming College, developed the new syllabus with AQA and added: “Now we need to get the message out to Year 11 students as soon as possible.”

‘Global specification’

Subject to approval by Ofqual, Ms Phillips says she expects Pearson to build on her work which has been made available to the Department for Education by AQA.

“It is a global specification. Students won’t just study the work of dead white men,” she said. “They will have the opportunity to study Islamic architecture and work by men and women of all colours and creeds. The support has been overwhelming,” she added.

In October, top experts signed an open letter to AQA condemning the decision not to offer the A-level to new students after this year.

AQA was the last board to offer the subject and the decision represented “a vital loss for students”, they argued.

At the time AQA said the change “was not about money or whether history of art deserves a place in the curriculum”, but said that it feared the new qualification was so wide-ranging that accurate marking would be impossible.

Pearson, which also announced plans to take on AS and A-levels in statistics, also dropped by AQA, said awarding organisations, government and schools should work together in the interests of students to secure the future of important qualifications.

“The response from the public, from teachers and from young people shows many people have a real passion for these subjects. We’re happy to help make sure they remain available,” said the company’s president, Rod Bristow.

The move was welcomed by leading academics and museum directors as well as by Turner Prize winners Anish Kapoor, Cornelia Parker and Jeremy Deller.

Mr Kapoor said it was “a huge relief” while Mr Deller called it “a good day for art and culture” and added: “Art history is the study of power, politics, identity and humanity, it makes perfect sense to keep the exam.”

Ms Parker said she had studied art history “as a working-class girl, receiving free school dinners… It has hugely enriched my life”.

The Association of Art Historians hopes the battle to save the A-level will boost the subject’s popularity, particularly in the state sector.

“The threat to the A-level has galvanised support for art history, which will, I hope, provide a platform for a concerted effort to ensure that more people get the opportunity to study a subject that will enrich their lives,” said Dr Ben Burbridge of Sussex University who was central to the campaign to save the A-level.

Record university offers now 3% higher than last year

The number of people offered places at UK universities has now hit a record 442,900 – 3% up on 2015, official figures show.

Around 19,000 of those have had their university and college places confirmed since midnight on A-level day, says the admissions service Ucas.

So far, over 14,000 have been accepted through clearing – 52% up on last year.

Association of Colleges Chief Executive Martin Doel urged people to take time to choose the right course for them.

A decline in the number of 18-year-olds and the removal of the cap which limits university places in England have contributed to “a buyer’s market” in university applications.

Ucas says clearing, the system which matches unfilled places with would-be-undergraduates without offers, opened two hours earlier than usual on results day with more places on offer.

‘Inundated’

And some leading Russell Group universities have been making greater use of the system.

Bristol University said places were being filled very quickly, adding that the newly competitive environment meant that “like all universities, we make use of clearing in ways that we wouldn’t have a few years ago”.

Birmingham University, which filled all its places on Thursday, said it had been “inundated” – with more than 6,000 calls for the small number of places available.

Ucas says high numbers are likely to be accepted through clearing over the weekend – with the majority of applicants using this route expected to find places by the end of Monday.

More than 153,000 people are still eligible to apply through clearing, says Ucas.

Mr Doel said young people should also consider “more affordable education and training routes available that can lead directly to a career” including higher level technical and professional courses and apprenticeships at further education colleges.

“Not only are tuition fees less at a college, living and travelling costs are also much lower because it’s possible to stay at home,” said Mr Doel.

The final date for university applications this year is 20 September.

Last call for free Windows 10 upgrade

Friday 29 July marks the last day that users can get a free upgrade to the Windows 10 operating system.

Those who do not take advantage of the offer will have to pay for it, with the home edition costing $120 (£91) and the professional edition $200 (£151).

Eligible devices include tablets and PCs running Windows 7 or newer.

Microsoft has been criticised for heavy-handed tactics in promoting the upgrade.

In May, the software giant was accused of a “nasty trick” when it changed the pop-up box encouraging users to upgrade so that clicking to shut it down meant the upgrade was scheduled rather than rejected.

A Californian woman successfully sued the firm after she claimed that an automatic Windows 10 update left her computer unusable.

In June, Microsoft said that is was going to offer “clearer options” for users considering the upgrade.

To date, around 300 million devices worldwide have upgraded to, or are using, Windows 10.

Most experts agree that upgrading should bring benefits to users.

Disc space

Windows 10 offers access to Cortana, Microsoft’s virtual assistant – the first major operating system to offer this feature.

The virtual assistant can find restaurants and create calendar events and also syncs with the Cortana app on any phone.

The system is designed to look the same on laptops, phones and tablets, and has a new browser called Edge.

Most agree that the operating system is easier to use and a vast improvement on Windows 8, which was heavily criticised.

It has the same tile-based system used by Windows phones – and reintroduces the Start Menu, which was missing from the previous operating system.

The update requires quite a bit of free disc space to install, so some may need to uninstall space-hogging programs.

Microsoft has published a list of the most common upgrade and installation issues and advice to try to fix the problem.

Annette Jump, an analyst with research firm Gartner, said there were pros and cons to upgrading.

“Consumers can continue to stay current on Windows going forward, as Microsoft is looking to deliver Windows more as a service in future,”

She also listed improved security as a reason to upgrade but warned it may not be worth it for all: “If you have an old PC – older than three years – you will likely have very low specs on the device and will not be able to benefit from many new features.”

Snapdeal Says Invested $300 Million in Supply Chain, Logistics in Last 1.5 Years

E-commerce major Snapdeal has pumped in $300 million (about Rs. 1,990 crores) over the last 18 months to strengthen its supply chain and logistics and facilitate the increase in shipment volumes.

The city-based firm has seen 1.9 times increase in shipment volumes from 1.29 lakh daily shipments last year to 2.5 lakh this year.

“We have seen a significant increase of 1.9 times in shipment volumes. This is on account of increase in assortment on Snapdeal from 12 million to 35 million over the year. We have also expanded our seller base which helped increase shipments,” Snapdeal Chief Customer Experience Officer Jayant Sood told PTI.

He added that reports by PwC and RedSeer Consulting suggest that Snapdeal’s promised delivery time is the shortest across India.

“The number of sellers on our platform has increased three fold from 1,00,000 at the beginning of 2015 to more than 3,00,000 in 2016… We have invested $300 million towards logistics and customer experience,” he said.

He added that the company has 2 million sq ft of warehousing space across 63 sites and 45 cities.

Sood said the seller expansion has also led to a huge increase in the goods available on its platform.

“Unlike other competing marketplaces, which have their own sellers under various arrangements, we have no such conflicting interests. This makes Snapdeal more attractive for sellers,” he said.

He said the company has seen 60 percent month-on-month increase in FMCG sales, while the books category grew by 300 percent. Also, there is a strong increase in uptake in the home decor category.

“This blend of expansion of high frequency categories drives high repeat usage, which is enabled by reliable experience each time,” he added.

Besides, sharp focus on repeat users and initiatives like same day refunds is helping Snapdeal “chart a distinct course”, he said.

Last Week’s Radio Derb Transcript: The Bonnie and Clyde of U.S. politics

The Bonnie and Clyde of U.S. politics.     For the month of April, the big primary contests coming up are New York on the 19th and Pennsylvania on the 26th. For the GOP, New York offers 95 delegates, allocated in proportion to how many votes each candidate gets. Pennsylvania yields 71 delegates, winner take all. For the Democrats, New York has 247 delegates and Pennsylvania 189, both proportional.

Latest polls show Trump far out ahead in New York, with Ted Cruz actually polling third, behind John Kasich. Hillary Clinton is well ahead of Bernie Sanders here.

For Pennsylvania the same, Trump and Clinton leading. Trump’s not leading by that much, though, and Cruz could possibly catch him. The flaw here for Trump is the people who tell pollsters they’re undecided. When they do decide, they tend to break big-time for Cruz. That’s why Trump’s voter numbers have been lagging his polls.

Again, regional culture is a guide to the likely results. Bernie Sanders’ appeal is to the less clannish, more universalist groups, like those Germans and Scandinavians in the Midwest. On a word-association test with the phrase “democratic socialism,” the response “Scandinavia” has to score pretty high; although in fact the first real advances towards modern democratic socialism took place in Bismarck’s Germany. So it’s no surprise that Bernie won in Minnesota, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin.

In New York and Pennsylvania there are more clannish, tribal groups — Americans of Italian, Irish, and Jewish origins — and Mrs Clinton will naturally do better among those, as will Trump.

Meanwhile, Mister Clinton’s been out campaigning for his wife. These two are a real tag team, aren’t they? — the Bonnie and Clyde of American politics.

Thursday this week Bill was in Philadelphia at a rally for his business partner — I beg their pardon: his wife — when protesters from the George Soros front organization Black Lives Matter tried to disrupt the event by yelling and hoisting banners.

The focus of the protesters was the 1994 federal crime bill, which funded lots of new police hires and prisons, and created new death penalty offenses. The bill was mainly a response to the crack epidemic of the eighties and early nineties, and to demands from black community leaders for more law enforcement.

The blogger M.G. included the 1994 laws in her list of what she calls “diversity whack-a-moles“: blacks demand that the government do something about something and then, when the government does do the thing requested, complain that it’s hurting blacks.
