Flipkart Says Delhi-NCR Had Highest Number of Online Shoppers in 2016

E-commerce major Flipkart on Sunday said it saw the highest number of shoppers on its platform coming from the National Capital Region this year.

“The National Capital has again raced ahead of all with most number of shoppers taking to e-commerce, closely followed by Bengaluru. Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad are the other metro cities that made the cut,” Flipkart, in its #FlipTrends2016 report, said.

Vellore, Tirupati, Bellari, Jorhat and Kottayam were the top five cities among tier III towns of the country for Flipkart, it added.

Interestingly, men accounted for a larger chunk (60 percent) of online shoppers in 2016, shopping more of electronics, personal audio, footwear and lifestyle product, according to Flipkart.

The most selling categories in 2016 on Flipkart were electronic accessories, mobiles, women clothing, men footwear and consumer electronics across all regions, it added.

Over 50 percent of transactions for categories like premium phones, consumer electronics and appliances, were made using Flipkart’s no cost EMI and product exchange options, the report said.
Flipkart, which competes with the likes of Amazon and Snapdeal, saw about 80 percent of its traffic coming from mobile handsets.

Some interesting products sold during 2016 include energy saving bulbs, wall stickers, selfie stick, printer ink, slimming belt, condoms, protein supplement, massager, blood pressure monitor, hookah and hookah flavours.

Number of state school pupils receiving private tuition has risen by a third, report reveals

About 43% of state school teachers have offered private tutoring outside their main work as demand continues to rise, a report has revealed.

The number of state-educated 11 to 16-year-olds in England and Wales who have been privately tutored rose by more than a third over the last decade, according to research by the Sutton Trust.

But the charity warned that the growth of the “shadow education” market, which it estimates to be worth up to £2 billion for pupils aged five to 18, is exacerbating inequalities in the education system by pricing lower income students out.

Currently across England and Wales, more than a quarter of state-educated 11 to 16-year-olds (700,000 pupils) have been privately tutored at some point, while 43% of state school teachers have offered private tuition.

Sir Peter Lampl, chairman of the Sutton Trust and the Education Endowment Foundation, said: “Private tuition is widespread and increasingly so. Nearly half of teachers have tutored and a quarter of teenagers have been tutored. But with costs of at least £25 per session, many cannot afford to benefit from this extra support, which exacerbates education inequalities.

“No-one wants to limit parents doing their best for their children, but we need to ensure that extra tuition is as widely available as possible. Otherwise, it will continue to widen the attainment gap.”

Maths and English were the most common subjects to be tutored in, followed by the sciences, Spanish and French, while specialist tuition for pupils hoping to pass the 11-plus test and gain a place at a grammar school was also popular.

Last year, 280,000 (10%) 11 to 16-year-old pupils in England and Wales received private tuition – a number the trust called “remarkable”.

But private school pupils were twice as likely to receive private lessons than those attending state schools, and pupils who received free school meals were almost 10% less likely to be privately tutored than those who did not.

The report – based on polling by Ipsos MORI and the National Foundation for Educational Research and data from private tuition agencies – claims to be the “most comprehensive analysis to date” of the UK’s private tuition market.

The trust is calling on the Government to introduce means-tested vouchers that will enable lower-income families to access additional educational support and provide quick remuneration to participating tutors and agencies.

It also is urging agencies to provide a certain proportion of their tuition to disadvantaged pupils for free.

Tutorfair, which has 38,000 tutors and gives free tutoring to one child for every student who pays, was praised as an example of good practice, and grammar schools should ensure young people are familiarised with the type of test they will encounter in entrance exams and encourage children from lower-income backgrounds to apply, the trust recommended.

Rise in number of Welsh students securing university place

The number of Welsh students securing a university place has risen by 9% in the past four years, figures have shown.

University and Colleges Admissions Service (Ucas) statistics revealed 19,320 Welsh students have had their applications accepted as of 1 September – 14 days after A-level results.

Of those, 10,920 are due to study in Wales and 8,260 in England.

This is up from 17,790 who entered higher education at the same point in 2012.

According to Ucas, 140 Welsh students are set to attend university in Scotland while just 10 will study in Northern Ireland.

Figures also showed 1,310 Welsh students had won a place through clearing.

A breakdown across the UK shows a 15% rise in English students being accepted into higher education in the past four years along with a 19% increase in Scottish students and a 14% rise in Northern Irish students.

In total, 498,270 students across the UK have been accepted into universities so far.

There are still places available at universities across Wales via clearing – although Cardiff University said on its website that vacancies for 2016 have been filled.

Olivia Jones, of Universities Wales, said it was encouraging that the majority of Welsh students have chosen to study in Wales.

“With 92% of graduates from full time first degree courses in Wales employed or in further study six months after leaving – a higher percentage than the UK average – this is an attractive offer for prospective students,” she said.

“Universities across Wales are committed to increasing opportunities for people from a diverse range of backgrounds to higher education and firmly believe that every person, regardless of circumstance, should have the opportunity to access a higher level learning experience that is appropriate, relevant and valuable.”

Exams day sees largest number of Scots pupils secure university places

More pupils from Scotland got a university place on exams results day than in any previous year, it has been confirmed.

Helen Thorne from UCAS told BBC Radio Scotland that 28,300 Scottish students had successfully secured their courses.

More than 140,000 students north of the border have received their results.

The Scottish Qualifications Authority has sent out scores from National 4 and 5, Higher, Advanced Higher and Scottish Baccalaureate exams.

Where can pupils in Scotland find help?

The Scottish government said the exams had seen “another highly successful set of results”, including:

152,701 Higher passes, the second highest number on record and 77% of those sat
234,160 National 5 passes, 79% of those sitting exams
114,635 National 4 passes, 93% of those sat
More than 43,000 National Certificates, Awards and National Progression Awards in courses such as early education, childcare and computer games development, up 27%

The latest results from the SQA suggested that problems with the 2015 Higher Maths exam have not been repeated. The 2015 pass mark had to be cut to 34% after the exam was deemed too difficult, but the 2016 pass mark was approximately 50%.

Fears that replacing part of the Higher English exam against a tight deadline would lead to problems also proved unfounded, with the pass mark for that subject also 50%.

Pass rates in National 4 and 5 exams were roughly in line with those in 2015, while the percentage of candidates passing their Higher exams dipped slightly from 79.2% to 77.2% – although new Higher exams have been phased in over this period.

New Advanced Higher exams were introduced for 2016, with an overall 81.7% pass rate.

Different paths

Dr Janet Brown, the SQA’s chief executive and Scotland’s chief examining officer, paid tribute to pupils, teachers, lecturers parents and carers.

She said: “This is the first year candidates will have been offered the full range of National Courses as part of Curriculum for Excellence. These results are testament to the dedication of the entire Scottish education system, working in partnership for the benefit of our young people.

“The new qualifications are performing well and the results clearly are enabling young people to transition between the levels and develop a wider range of skills.

“It is important to recognise the different paths candidates can take to achieve success, whether it be in National Courses, Skills for Work or National Progression Awards.”

The Royal Mail said it had “pulled out all the stops” to make sure results were delivered in the post on time, while more than 50,000 pupils also signed up to get their results online or via text message.

Speaking to the BBC’s Good Morning Scotland programme, UCAS director Ms Thorne said: “There is really good news, we have got 28,300 Scottish students who have secured a place at university today and that is the highest that we have ever seen on Scottish results day.

“So we want to say a big congratulations to all of them and when the UCAS track system opens students will be able to log in and see if they have got their university place.”

Ms Thorne also said the number of students from EU countries being accepted to Scottish universities was up 19% to 3,900, saying there was “no evidence of EU students being put off” by the Brexit vote.

The National Union of Students welcomed the “hugely encouraging” figures, while Colleges Scotland said it was “delighted” with the results.

Education Secretary John Swinney said students could be “extremely proud of their efforts”.

Mr Swinney said: “Today’s results show that Scotland’s learners continue to perform very well, with the second highest number of Higher passes on record, despite a fall in the size of the S5 and S6 year groups. This year is only the second time in history that we have seen more than 150,000 Higher passes, up from around 112,000 just ten years ago.

“It is encouraging to see strong performances in qualifications related to wider skills for life and work and I greatly welcome the increase of attainment in Awards, National Certificates and National Progression Awards.”

Opposition parties also welcomed the results, with Scottish Conservative education spokeswoman Liz Smith welcoming the fact that issues from 2015 appeared to have been addressed.

Labour’s Iain Gray also voiced congratulations to pupils whose “hard work has paid off”, although he noted concern about the drop in the pass rate for Highers and called on the government to build on the results by giving schools extra resources.

‘Massive day’

The Royal Mail said results had been delivered to Scottish students in 45 countries around the world, from Australia to Singapore.

Planning teams had been working for months to ensure that all results are delivered on time.

Head of special events and planning Derek Keir said: “This is a massive day for every pupil in Scotland waiting for their results.

“All of our postmen and women, many of whom have children themselves, understand just how important this day is for families. Our people pull out all the stops to ensure the results are delivered as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
