Scottish teachers and lecturers paid £600,000 in compensation

Teachers and lecturers across Scotland were paid more than £600,000 in compensation for injuries – including from assaults and accidents – at work in the past year.

Payments to members of the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) union included £55,000 to a teacher assaulted by a pupil.

It was said to have happened when the teacher attempted to calm the pupil.

Many payouts were due to injuries caused by accidents.

They included £12,000 for a knee fracture caused by tripping over a metal door wedge and the same amount for a broken arm caused by slipping on black ice in a school car park.

Another award was £12,500 for back pain caused by carrying a heavy box without handles.

The total payouts to EIS members for the year reached £608,925.

‘Entirely avoidable’

EIS general secretary Larry Flanagan said: “This year’s figure of over £600,000 in compensation for teachers and lecturers injured at work demonstrates that there is still a long way to go towards the aim of eliminating workplace injuries in our schools, colleges and universities.

“The most common cause of injuries continues to be accidents such as slips, trips and falls.

“These are also the types of incidents that are entirely avoidable with correct adherence to appropriate health and safety procedures in the workplace.

“Schools, colleges and universities will never be entirely risk-free but it is essential that all facilities are as safe as possible for learners and staff alike.”

Mr Flanagan denied the payouts were an indication of a compensation culture.

He said the compensation amounts would be reduced if insurance firms took less time to admit liability.

Apple to offer paid parental leave and more sick days to retail employees

Apple will expand benefits for all of its retail employees in the US, beginning April 4th. Bloomberg reports the new benefits include increased vacation and sick days, paid parental leave and more. It will impact both full-time and part-time employees across all 270 Apple Stores nationwide.

The tech giant’s offer of more generous benefits didn’t come out of the blue. Apple, like many corporations, is having a tough time recruiting and retaining hourly workers in a tight labor market. A number of media outlets, including The Verge, Gizmodo, 9to5Mac and others have reported on the grim realities of Apple’s retail operations, which include low pay, stressful workloads and low employee morale. Staffing shortages due to Covid-19 led to many stores operating on reduced hours or closing altogether. Dozens of Apple employees staged a Christmas Eve walkout in order to protest their working conditions. The testimony of these workers presents a stark contrast to Apple’s financial standing during the pandemic, which has produced several consecutive record-breaking quarters.

Apple will double the number of paid sick days for both full-time and part-time employees. Full-time retail employees will receive 12 sick days instead of six. The company will also be more lenient in granting sick leave, allowing workers to use sick leave for mental health days or in order to take family members to the doctor. Part-time workers will also receive paid vacation days and paid parental leave for up to six weeks.

The company’s benefits expansion follows similar moves by Amazon, Walmart and Fedex to retain hourly and front-line employees. Thousands of frontline workers have since quit or retired due to stressful and dangerous working conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic. But labor rights advocates point out that many of these improvements, such as bonuses or hazard pay, are either temporary or have since been rolled back.

Michelle Schroeder-Gardner fast-tracked her college education and graduated with two degrees in two and a half years.

Still, she owed about $20,000 worth of student loan debt. After completing her Master’s in finance two years later, she racked up more debt and owed a total of $38,000.

Schroeder-Gardner, now 28, managed to pay it all off in just seven months.

The first step to getting out of debt sounds obvious, but it is often overlooked, she tells CNBC Make It: Add up the total amount that you owe.

“A lot of people don’t know the exact amount down to the dollar,” she says. “They just kind of guesstimate. Once they realize how much debt they actually have, it can be pretty shocking.”

If you’re paying off student loans, “pull up each student loan and tally everything, down to the penny,” she writes on her blog. “By doing so, you will have a much more realistic view of exactly how much you’re dealing with.”

Next, Schroeder-Gardner focused on making more money: “The biggest reason for why I was able to pay off my student loans is because I earned as much money as I could outside of my day job. I mystery shopped and got paid to take surveys, but the biggest thing I did was I made an income through my blog,” which she launched in 2011.

The extra income not only allowed her to pay off her loans but also to quit her job as a financial analyst.

Schroeder-Gardner has been blogging full-time since October 2013, when she left her day job. At the time, it was generating about $10,000 a month. Today, she regularly earns over $100,000 a month from her blog.

Whether you’re paying down debt or looking to achieve financial independence ASAP, focus on earning, the millionaire blogger advises: “While cutting your budget is great, usually there’s a limit to how much you can save. Find ways to make more, because there’s no limit on how much extra money you can make in your spare time.”
