Bezel-less smartphones are arguably the biggest trend in the smartphone market right now, and Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, the successor to the smartphone that started it all, will launch in India today. The launch event is expected to kick off at 12pm IST, and as always, Gadgets 360 will have live updates from the event, and full details about Mi MIX 2 price in India, release date, and everything else. The smartphone has already been confirmed to be a Flipkart-exclusive, though it will obviously be available directly from Xiaomi as well.

To recall, the Mi MIX 2 was launched in China last month alongside the Xiaomi Mi Note 3. Notably, the Mi MIX 2 India launch will be the first premium smartphone the Chinese firm has brought to India since the Xiaomi Mi 5 back in March last year.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 price in India

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 was unveiled in three RAM and storage variants – 6GB RAM/ 64GB storage at CNY 3,299 (roughly Rs. 32,300), 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage at CNY 3,599 (roughly Rs. 35,300), and 6GB RAM/ 256GB storage at CNY 3,999 (roughly Rs. 39,200). The company had also unveiled the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 Special Edition 8GB of RAM, 128GB storage, and a full ceramic body, at CNY 4,699 (roughly Rs. 46,000). However, this last model is unlikely to be launched in India, at least on Tuesday – as it has yet to go on sale in China, where it will be made available to buy in November. Price in India of Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is likely to be similar to what we saw in China.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 features

As for the features, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2’s biggest highlight is, of course, its bezel-less display. It sports a 5.99-inch full-HD (1080×2160 pixels, 18:9 aspect ratio) LCD display with a pixel density of 403ppi and support for DCI-P3 colour gamut. There is no ‘upper lip’ above the display, and the front camera has been relegated to the ‘bottom lip’, a design decision that Xiaomi had used with the last Mi MIX as well. The smartphone is lighter, smaller, and thinner than its predecessor. Featuring a ceramic body, the smartphone has a frame built out of 7-Series aluminium apart from an 18K gold plated camera ring. Another major highlight is ‘hidden sound-guided speaker’ that resonates sound through the display and frame, completely hiding the speaker itself. Finally, the company is also touting facial recognition technology for unlocking the smartphone.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 specifications

The dual-SIM (Nano-SIM) Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 features a 5.99-inch FHD (1080×2160 pixels) 18:9 display with a pixel density of 403ppi and a DCI-P3 colour gamut. It is powered by a Snapdragon 835 SoC clocked at up to 2.45GHz and coupled with 6GB of RAM – up to 8GB RAM for the Special Edition. It sports a 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 sensor with 1.25-micron pixels, 4-axis optical image stabilisation, 5-piece lens, an f/2.0 aperture, as well as a facial recognition feature. On the front, it bears a 5-megapixel front camera with a facial recognition function.

As for storage, as we mentioned in the price section, there are three inbuilt storage variants, namely – 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. The storage is not expandable. Connectivity options include 4G LTE, dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) Wi-Fi 802.11ac, GPS/ A-GPS, Bluetooth v5.0, and USB Type-C.

The regular variant of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 measures 151.8×75.5×7.7mm, and weighs 185 grams. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 Special Edition on the other hand measures 150.5×74.6×7.7mm and weighs 187 grams. Both variants are powered by a 3400mAh battery. Sensors on board include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, digital compass, gyroscope, and ultrasonic proximity sensor.

HP Too Is Done Making Windows Phone Handsets

HP, one of the only OEMs that offers a Windows Phone handset in its lineup, is now giving up on Microsoft’s mobile operating system, too. The company told news outlet The Register that it won’t be adding any new handset to its existing “Elite” Windows Phone smartphone lineup. Furthermore, the company said its Elite x3 handset will reach the end of support in 2019.

Nick Lazaridis, president of the EMEA regions at HP, told The Register that the company concluded that “it doesn’t make sense” in continuing to build Windows Phone handsets when Microsoft itself doesn’t seem as interested in its own mobile operating system. Microsoft has changed its strategy and is now less focused on Windows 10 Mobile, Lazaridis was quoted as saying.

In a rather surprise move last year, HP unveiled the Elite x3, a high-end Windows Phone handset. The phone packed enough muscle power that it could also serve as a laptop or desktop using a dock. HP was going after the business market with Elite x3 handset, and had planned to expand the Elite Windows Phone lineup.

A company representative told The Verge that HP might in the future re-evaluate its strategy and decide to make more of Windows Phone handsets if Microsoft shares “additional roadmap details” with it. With HP losing faith in Windows Phone, the future of Microsoft’s mobile operating system looks very bleak.

In July, Microsoft ended support for Windows Phone 8.1, which according to estimates runs on more than 80 percent of Windows Phone handsets, hinting that the company doesn’t really see much value in supporting its devices for a long time.

Under Satya Nadella, Microsoft has changed several of its strategies. The company has launched Office and several of its products to rival Android and iOS platforms. On Thursday, Microsoft said it was bringing Microsoft Edge Web browser to Android and iOS as well. The company also rebranded Arrow Launcher as Microsoft Launcher and added its Continuum feature to it.

Airtel Said to Be in Talks With Handset Companies for Rs. 2,500 4G Smartphone to Rival Jio Phone

India’s largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel, is in talks with multiple handset makers to bring a 4G smartphone for a price as low as Rs. 2,500-2,700 to take on Reliance Jio.

While Mukesh Ambani-led Jio has announced plans to offer Internet-enabled feature phone for a refundable deposit of Rs. 1,500, Airtel is placing its bet on a full-fledged smartphone as it believes people would be ready to shell out a little more to get a loaded handset.

A source familiar with the development said the new 4G smartphone – that will debut around Diwali – will come bundled with Airtel’s 4G connection and “attractive” data and voice plan to woo mass market customers.

The planned dual-SIM 4G smartphone will sport a 4-inch display, front and rear cameras, VoLTE calling and a solid battery life. The Android handset will come with 1GB of RAM, said the source who wished not to be named. He, however, did not say when the phones would be available for booking.

Reliance Jio had, in July, announced that formal bookings for JioPhone would open on August 24, while the phone itself is expected to be available from September.

According to industry estimates, six million bookings have been recorded for JioPhone, that offers free voice calls and SMS for life. Unlimited data offering comes for Rs. 153 per month.

While the details such as the name of the handset makers that Airtel is negotiating with and the exact offers on anvil are still under the wraps, it is learnt that the Sunil Mittal company will co-promote the 4G smartphone with the manufacturers. Besides this, Airtel also plans to offer its retail distribution muscle to take the device to the masses.

“The company is talking to various handset manufacturers to bring a Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 2,700 Android-based 4G smartphone to the market around Diwali,” the source said.

Airtel declined to comment on a detailed email questionnaire sent by PTI. “As a policy, we do not comment on market speculation,” the Airtel spokesperson said.

The company’s strategy to counter Jio offering is based on its belief that the Indian telecom consumer is looking for a large screen smartphone experience at an affordable price.

Hence, Airtel’s new 4G smartphone bundled offering will target customers looking to upgrade from feature phones.

Reliance Jio, which started accepting pre-bookings on August 24, was forced to suspend the processafter a whopping over 6 million JioPhone units were pre-ordered in a matter of just three days.

The delivery of the JioPhone is expected to start during Navratri festival starting September 21, according to a channel partner of Reliance Retail.

On the first day of pre-bookings, Reliance Jio has finally released the full specifications of Jio Phone on its website. Aimed at 2G feature phone users who are yet to join the company’s network, the handset is “essentially free,” though you will have to make a refundable security deposit of Rs. 1,500. The specification sheet confirms several key Jio Phone features that consumers were curious about, such as expandable storage support, processor, and whether it has hotspot function or not.

Jio Phone specifications

The single Nano-SIM JioPhone sports a 2.4-inch QWVGA (240×320 pixels) display, and is powered by the 1.2GHz Spreadtrum SPRD 9820A/QC8905 dual-core processor with Mali-400 GPU and 512MB of RAM. It offers 4GB of internal storage, which is further expandable using a microSD card (up to 128GB).

There’s a 2-megapixel rear camera at the back and a VGA front camera. The JioPhone packs a 2000mAh battery that is rated to offer 12 hours of talk time and 15 days of standby time. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth v4.1, Wi-Fi, NFC, FM Radio, GPS, and USB 2.0 support.

Jio Phone features

JioPhone comes with voice-enabled search with Jio Assistant that allows you to open apps, search on Google, and even compose SMSes. It works in English and Hindi both catering to a large audience. The JioPhone also allows you to connect the phone to the TV for projection using the JioMediaCable As mentioned, it comes with 22 Indian language support including Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santhali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

As of now, the Jio Phone is only available in Black, and in-box accessories include the handset, removable battery, charger adaptor, quick service guide, warranty card, and SIM card. The first Jio-branded phone will come preloaded with apps such as JioCinema, JioMusic, JioTV, and JioXpressNews, along with popular instant messaging and social networking apps.

Jio Phone to Hit Telecom Sector, Erode Revenues: Vodafone to DoT

The country’s second largest telecom player Vodafone expects Jio’s ‘effective free phone’ with unlimited calling to erode operators’ revenues which are already under pressure and sought reduction in various levies imposed by the government as a breather to the industry.

“…the new operator continues to aggressively under-price its services, including announcing launch of ‘Effective Zero Price Feature Phone’ with unlimited voice.

“This is likely to cause further erosion in revenue for existing operators,” the company in a letter to the Telecom Commission Member (Finance) Anuradha Mitra.

RIL Chairman and MD Mukesh Ambani recently launched JioPhone, a 4G feature phone at a one-time fully refundable deposit of Rs. 1,500 per unit. JioPhone beta testing starts from August 15. The booking will start from September 24 online as well as through Reliance Retail and Jio stores.

Vodafone said there is continuous decline in its revenue from telecom services and it has recorded further decline of 3.41 percent in the the quarter ended June 2017.

It also called for reducing the interest rate applied for deferred spectrum payments.

“…a reduction in the interest rate applied for deferred spectrum payments is necessary to reduce burden on operators.

Hence, we have requested reduction from 10 percent to G Sec rate of 6.25 percent – 6.5 percent on deferred payment,” the letter said.

Vodafone said that revenue share with the government imposes huge burden on telecom operators even though companies purchase spectrum at market price.

The company requested the DoT to consider recommendation of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India for reducing Universal Service Obligation Fund from 5 percent to 3 percent as private operators have already rolled out services in rural areas and current call termination rates are very low.

“…despite having rolled out in rural areas, we still have to pay USO and the mobile termination rates are also below cost which adversely impact us since majority of the calls in the rural areas are incoming,” the letter said.

At present, a telecom operator charges 14 paise for every incoming call that it gets from network of other operators.

“Therefore, we earnestly request kind consideration and early decision on reduction in the USO levy from 5 percent to 3 percent and reduction of interest charges along with rescheduling the payment period, which has been tabled before DoT and IMG (inter-ministerial group),” Vodafone said.

As per official data, revenues of telecom operators from services dipped by about 15 percent to Rs. 40,831 crores in the January-March quarter this year compared to Rs. 48,379 crores in the same period of last year.

The government has formed an IMG which is expected to submit its recommendation very soon to address financial woes of the telecom sector.

One of India’s most popular mobile applications Paytm has just rolled out a new update. Under the latest changes being made, Paytm has launched a new feature where it will enable users to send money without even opening the app. This new update is a major change as it will make money sharing and easier process on the app and it is meant for that. Paytm will essentially enable users to share money with his/her contacts directly from the phonebook app. They will now have no reason to open the Paytm app every time they wish to make a transaction unless they prefer to do so.

It should be noted that the latest feature on Paytm is currently only available for Android smartphones only. This means iOS users cannot avail the service right now, but may expect it to launch on their devices soon. Paytm says the new feature is designed to make it easier for users to send money to friends and family. The app will put Paytm in direct competition with WhatsApp, which is currently the biggest messaging app in India with over 200 million monthly active users. Interestingly the report comes as WhatsApp is working on integrating UPI payments service within the app. Paytm claims to have over 200 million users in India.

Here’s how to use the new feature to make payments via Paytm: Just open the contacts list on your smartphone, select a contact, tap on ‘Send Money’ and enter the desired amount to instantly transfer money. A user will need to update their Paytm app as well in order to enable the feature. Also, you will need to give Paytm access to your contacts book in order for this feature to work.

While the new feature will make payments from Paytm directly integrated into contacts, reports indicate the company has plans to go beyond the payments space. A new report by PTI had said Paytm is planning to introduce a messaging service, which will be rolled out by the end of the month.
