Amazon Great Indian Sale Returns, 3-Day Festival Begins Friday

The start of the year is usually filled up with already broken resolutions and massive sales. Almost all retail outlets have put up flat discounts, and online marketplace Amazon is joining the bandwagon. Amazon India has announced that it is hosting the Great Indian Sale from January 20 to January 22, where many discounted products and offers will be up for grabs.

The company will list offers and price cuts on consumer electronics, home, kitchen, daily essentials, and fashion categories. Amazon India has paired up with State Bank of India to offer 15 percent cashback on app purchases and 10 percent cashback on website purchases with its debit and credit cards. The e-commerce company is even pushing its Amazon Pay service by offering 15 percent cashback for all purchases done with the wallet.

Like all Amazon sales, there will be lightning deals, so expect the best bargains to go out of stock real soon. We recommend you shop from the app to make the most of the card cashback offer listed above. If you’re a first time Amazon India user, ensure that you are registered on the site beforehand. Fill in your shipping address and save your card details before the sale starts to enable faster checkout.

Ahead of the sale, the company has listed some discounts, such as 16 percent off on the Moto G4 (16GB), 7 percent off on the Moto G4 (32GB), and 21 percent off on the Moto X Force. Other electronics on sale ahead of the main sale include the AmazonBasics In-Ear Headphones with mic and the Amkette Rapid Car Charger 3.1A with Dual-USB Ports.

Amazon India expects a huge turnout for its sale, and is looking to mass hire to smooth deliveries. The company said it will create well over 7,500 temporary jobs for its upcoming sale, and these positions will mostly be in logistics to ensure no-hassle in deliveries. These roles are seasonal and do not offer a permanent spot as an employee.

Super Mario Run Returns to the App Store

After a brief disappearance, Super Mario Run is now back on the App Store. Earlier we reported that Nintendo’s first major smartphone game had been pulled from Apple’s storefront. No reason for its temporary removal has been given by Nintendo.

Pulling up Super Mario Run’s iOS update history though, points at two very recent versions.Yesterday’s 3.0.2 and today’s 3.0.3 update state “bug fixes” were made and nothing else.

This isn’t the first time a publisher has removed its games from the App Store. In the past, the likes of EA had removed its Dead Space and Mass Effect Infiltrator titles while more recently, 2K had pulled BioShock from iOS too. Thankfully, Nintendo’s removal of Super Mario Run seems to be far from permanent at this time.

During Nintendo’s financial earnings report, the company has said the game has been downloaded almost 150 million times across iOS and Android. Incidentally, it’s still available for download via the Google Play Store.

In January, it was revealed that Super Mario Run was downloaded 78 million times with around five percent paying for the full version, translating to close to four million.

Revenue from the game “did not meet our expectations,” Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said speaking to Asia Nikkei in March. Previously it was reported that the game’s gross revenue hit $30 million in two weeks.

At the time, the company isn’t planning to focus freemium games completely, citing its success with Fire Emblem: Heroes being an outlier.

“We honestly prefer the Super Mario Run model,” a senior company official said to Asia Nikkei in March.

Official: Windows for Workstations returns in Fall Creators Update

Microsoft is reviving Windows Workstations with a new cut of Windows titled “Windows 10 Pro for Workstations”.

The last time your vultures heard “Windows for Workstations” was the 1990s when Redmond used that moniker to market flavors of 16-bit Windows 3 with networking stacks. Then along came the 32-bit NT Workstation editions – such as Windows NT Workstation 4.0 launched in 1996. The term Workstation fell away as Microsoft labelled its operating systems Server, Home, Pro, Enterprise, and so on.

Fast forward to June this year, and it emerged Microsoft was bringing it back with the upcoming release of Windows 10 Pro for Workstations. Now, the software giant has officially announced this edition of Windows, listing its confirmed features.

This time around the target is power users, not the mainstream: Microsoft’s bringing back the name and a workstation product because its says some Windows 10 users wanted a version of the OS that can handle higher-performing hardware.

The new version of Windows can therefore run up to four CPUs and they can be Xeons or Opterons instead of their less-powerful cousins intended for desktops. The new OS will also be able to handle six terabytes of RAM.

The OS also runs ReFS, the Resilient File System adopted in Windows Server 2012, rather than the NTFS used in other cuts of Windows 10. Another notable storage-related feature is SMB Direct, which when paired with Remote Direct Memory Access-enabled NICs will speed data into and out of PCs running Windows 10 Pro for Workstations.

Persistent memory is another option, thanks to NVDIMM-N support.

Microsoft’s intent here is clear: the world buys about a million workstations each year and right now Windows 10 isn’t a good choice for plenty of them. The new cut of the OS will change that.

Interestingly, the new OS is at first glance overkill for Microsoft’s own workstation, the Surface Studio, as it maxes out with a Core i7 and has an integrated Ethernet port that appears not to support RDMA. If Microsoft upgrades the Studio to suit Windows 10 Pro for Workstations it will be a mighty machine indeed.
