Samsung is unlikely to unveil its new Galaxy Note 8 until later next month but the firm may have given its army of loyal followers an early glimpse of this latest device.

The Korean tech firm has just tweeted an image of a mysterious device and it’s got fans in a flap that it could be the first look at the Note 8.

The photo was posted on Twitter with the words “Do what you want. #Exynos will get things done,” and is aimed publicising this latest own-brand processor.

These brains are included in some versions of the Galaxy S8, however, the image in the tweet is not Samsung’s current flagship.

As soon as the photo was published, Samsung Note fans began speculating that Samsung has published the first look at the new Note 8.

One Twitter user commented, “It’s Note 8 wow how wonderful infinity design.”

Whilst another added, “If this is the Note8, god damn Samsung! It is very beautiful!”

There’s no confirmation if this image is the new Note 8 but it would certainly confirm rumours that the device is going to feature an edge-to-edge curved Infinity display.

The sensors at the top of the image also show how the new facial recognition could feature.

However, one thing that may disprove this image is a leaked Note 8 is the fact there’s no buttons on the side of the phone.

Even with the latest technology allowing for more interactions via the display, the Note 8 would still need some function switches, such as power and volume, on the side of the phone.

Although this latest image may not turn out to be the Note 8 there’s certainly plenty for fans of the series to be excited about.

This giant phablet looks set to be one of the most powerful smartphones ever made with features including a dual-lens camera, huge battery and updated S Pen with improved performance.

Sadly, it seems all of this technology could come at a price with the Note 8 expected to cost over $1,000.

This would make it one of the most expensive smartphones ever created.

YotaPhone, the smartphone which is popular for its dual-display feature, is all set to get the third iteration later this year. Reports out from Russia have claimed that the third smartphone from Yota Devices, dubbed Yota 3, will launch later this year, and will start at $350 (roughly Rs. 22,500) for 64GB model and $450 (roughly Rs. 29,000) for the variant with 128GB storage.

Engadget reports that the third phone is being manufactured by Baoli Yota, which is joint venture of investor Baoli (formerly known as Rex) and manufacturer Coolpad. The publication has also received details about the specifications that hint that the Yota 3 will feature the popular mid-range SoC, Snapdragon 625. Other specifications of the Yota 3 could include 5.5-inch full-HD AMOLED display at the front, and a 5.2-inch HD E-ink touchscreen at the back. There will be a fingerprint scanner at the front, and Yota 3 is said to run on Android Nougat. Other rumoured specifications of the Yota 3 include dual-SIM support, 4GB RAM, 12-megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash, 13-megapixel front camera, 3200mAh battery, and a USB Type-C port. The leak also hints that the Yota 3 will miss out the 3.5mm audio jack as well, and the USB Type-C will handle the audio output.

A Russian report adds that the Yota 3 will start shipping in China from September.

The company has launched two smartphones thus far. The first generation YotaPhone was unveiled back in the beginning of 2013 though it started shipping only by December that year. The company upgraded its original dual-screen smartphone at MWC 2014 with the next-generation YotaPhone aka YotaPhone 2.

Samsung on Friday launched its newest Tizen-powered smartphone – the Samsung Z4 – and it runs on Tizen 3.0 OS. The smartphone will be launched in select markets across the world, starting with India in May. The Samsung Z4 will be made available in Black, Gold, and Silver colour variants depending on the market. For now, the company has not detailed the Samsung Z4 price or its exact launch date.

The most interesting aspect about the new phone from Samsung is its camera department. The Samsung Z4 comes with a 5-megapixel rear camera with dual-LED flash support and at front it features a 5-megapixel sensor with f/2.2 aperture and LED flash support. The company claims that both front and rear cameras on Samsung Z4 are “optimised for social media” and offer features focused on convenience and creativity. The rear flash module also appears to be shaped similar to the Smart Glow notification system unveiled with the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2016).

The Samsung Z4 will be made available in both single and dual-SIM variants depending on the market. It sports a 4.5-inch WVGA (480×800 pixels) display with 2.5D curved glass on top, which the company says is a first for its Z-Series Tizen smartphones. It is powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core processor coupled with 1GB of RAM.
While Samsung is yet to detail the inbuilt storage offered by the device, the connectivity options offered by Samsung Z4 include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0, GPS, and Glonass. The smartphone houses a 2050mAh battery. The Samsung Z4 measures 132.9×69.2×10.3mm and weighs 143 grams.

“We’re dedicated to providing our customers with devices that offer smarter mobile interactions,” DJ Koh, president of mobile communications business at Samsung Electronics, was quoted as saying in the company’s release. “The Samsung Z4 brings a simplified mobile experience to first time smartphone users and represents our ongoing commitment to expanding the Tizen ecosystem,” Koh said.

As the name indicates, the Samsung Z4 is the fourth smartphone in Samsung Z series. However, it cannot be called the successor the Samsung Z3. The South Korean giant has muddled the naming scheme, at least in terms of chronology. The first Samsung Tizen smartphone to have been unveiled was the Samsung Z, however, that never hit markets. Next, was the Samsung Z1, which was launched in January 2015. Next, strangely enough, was the Samsung Z3, unveiled in October 2015. Finally, we got the Samsung Z2, which was unveiled in August 2016.

A system of rules that allow vehicles to communicate with smartphones may be vulnerable to hacking, a new study suggests. Many of today’s automobiles leave the factory with secret passengers: prototype software features that are disabled but that can be unlocked by clever drivers, researchers said.

In what is believed to be the first comprehensive security analysis of its kind, researchers at New York University Tandon School of Engineering and George Mason University in the US found vulnerabilities in MirrorLink, a system of rules that allow vehicles to communicate with smartphones.

MirrorLink when unlocked can allow hackers to use a linked smartphone as a stepping stone to control safety-critical components such as the vehicle’s anti-lock braking system.

Damon McCoy, from the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, explained that “tuners” – people or companies which customise automobiles – might unwittingly enable hackers by unlocking insecure features.

“Tuners will root around for these kinds of prototypes, and if these systems are easy to unlock they will do it,” he said. “And there are publically available instructions describing how to unlock MirrorLink. Just one of several instructional videos on YouTube has gotten over 60,000 views,” McCoy added.

“The researchers used such publically available instructions to unlock MirrorLink on the in-vehicle infotainment system in a 2015 vehicle they purchased from eBay for their experiments,” said McCoy.

The automaker and supplier declined to release a security patch – reflecting the fact that they never enabled MirrorLink. McCoy pointed out that this could leave drivers who enable MirrorLink out on a limb.

MirrorLink is the connection protocol and allows the driver or passenger to control phone apps via the car’s dash and steering wheel controls. Created by the Connected Car Consortium, MirrorLink represents 80 per cent of the world’s automakers, is the first and leading industry standard for connecting smartphones to in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems.

However, some automakers disable it because they chose a different smartphone-to-IVI standard, or because the version of MirrorLink in their vehicles is a prototype that can be activated later.

LG Unveils Fingerprint Sensor That Sits Under a Smartphone Display

Apple began pioneering smartphone fingerprint sensors in its smartphones a few years ago, with the iPhone 5s. Since then, numerous manufacturers have introduced fingerprint sensors on their smartphones. Now, LG is doing the pioneering, and is touting its new fingerprint sensor that sits under the display. This means that when you will place your finger on the cover glass of the display, the under glass fingerprint sensor module would automatically identify your fingerprint.

Announced on Monday by LG Innotek CEO Jongseok Park, the under glass fingerprint sensor module will not only eliminate dedicated buttons, pads, or other elements for fingerprint recognition, but will also help make the smartphone more water resistant by reducing the number of openings. This might also result in slimmer devices in future.

LG Innotek says it has cut 0.01-inch (0.3mm) slot on the back of the cover display glass and has installed a fingerprint sensor in it with “supreme precision and combination technology.”

It has been mentioned that the fingerprint sensor module has a false acceptance rate (FAR) of 0.002 percent. LG adds that the adherence side of both the glass and the fingerprint sensor is 0.0098-inch (0.25mm) thick and can resist the impact of a 130 gram steel ball dropped from 7.9-inch.

“We are concentrating on all our resources to the development of the differentiated technology based on the creation of customer values. We will continue to provide convenient, safe, and pleasant user experiences by launching innovative product,” said Changhwan Kim, Head of Research and Development Centre LG.

LG has not yet revealed when exactly we would start seeing this technology in smartphones or other devices. However, this might happen soon as a company spokesperson has said to The Korea Times that it is in talks with some smartphone brands to commercialize the product within this year. “We are in talks with some handset manufacturers to commercialise the new modules within the year.” The company in December last year was tipped to supply Oled displays for upcoming iPhone models.

Last month, Apple went small with its iPhone 5SE. Its latest offering is a rarity in the world of smartphones, where screen sizes seem to have gotten bigger, model after model, year on year. In fact, manufacturers seem to have all but abandoned the sub-4-inch phone. So, with a 6.3-inch screen, LeEco’s Le Max attempts to go one size up on its competitors.

What’s good: The Le Max is a flagship device with an eye-catching design. Even the gold variant does not seem too loud or gaudy. The big screen size ensures that you get value for money in terms of entertainment — games come to life, pictures look great and watching videos or reading books is an enjoyable experience.

The device is powered by a Snapdragon 810 processor, making multi-tasking on the phone a smooth experience. Regular apps and games function well, and the device does not heat up even after continuous use.

Another plus is the battery (3400mAh battery), which easily lasts for a day and a half with moderate usage. The phone did not let us down when we had to use the device extensively for seven hours over the course of an event.

The phone comes with a 21MP primary camera, which works well outdoors and in well-lit conditions. The fingerprint sensor is on par with other competitive devices while the phone’s pixel resolution (2560×1440) ensures that you get a sharp, colourful display. The phone’s EUI (Eco User Interface) comes with a learning curve, but is not too difficult to pick up.

What’s not: We did have an issue with the size, which is the phone’s USP. It was difficult to get our small fingers around the phone. This also meant that we were extra cautious while using the device for the fear of dropping it. The camera was not up to the mark in low-light conditions. Also, at `36,999, the price is on the steeper side, especially if you consider its flagship Chinese counterparts offering as many features at a lower price.

Verdict: While the phone’s size does work to its advantage at times, it can also act as a deterrent. Buyer discretion is advised.

Huawei takes on Apple with P9 Leica dual lens smartphone

Huawei has beaten Apple at its game again as it launched the P9 and P9 Plus smartphones which will feature two-rear facing camera lenses.

The dual-camera technology, which Apple is expected to release along with its iPhone 7, allows the user to effectively refocus the photograph after it has been taken. Both the lenses work in synchronisation with each other to create sharper contrast and better depth of field than ordinary or single lens camera setups, Huawei said.

The Chinese smartphone giant has partnered with German camera company Leica to develop the cameras, one of which shoots in full colour, while the other is monochrome. Also, the lenses are infused completely with the body of the phones giving Huawei a design edge over the protruding lenses of both Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and the iPhone 6s Plus.

While the P9 sports a 5.2-inch 1080p display, the P9 Plus measures in at 5.5-inches. The P9 comes in six shades; dark grey, silver, gold and rose gold (much like Apple’s current colour scheme), what Huawei calls ‘haze gold’ and white.

The phablets run on a 64-bit processor, feature a biometric fingerprint scanner on their backs and are manufactured from aluminium.The P9 will retail from Rs 42,000 approximately for 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, with pricing for the P9 Plus starting from Rs 52,500 approximately for 4GB of RAM and 74GB.

Earlier, Huawei had beaten Apple to the force touch or 3D touch technology with its Mate S smartphone launched in September, 2015. It is currently the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer behind Samsung and Apple, and is bested in its home nation only by Apple.

This device can transform your smartphone into 3D printerA US-based company has designed a portable device that lets you turn any smartphone into a 3D printer using the light from the touchscreen to process your plastic creations, a media report said.

The gadget called OLO is designed to be simple to understand and operate, and is battery-operated and fully portable, weighing just 780 grams, ScienceAlert reported citing Kickstarter, the company which helped develop the creative device.

The device consists of three parts: A reservoir, which holds 400 cubic cm of printing volume; 100-gram bottles of coloured photopolymer resin to build your objects with; and a mechanised lid, under which the build plate and control electronics are tightly arranged.

First, you have to load a schematic of your object into the OLO mobile app (available for iOS, Android, and Windows) and then fit your smartphone into the base under the reservoir. A piece of polarised glass is installed into the base, which your phone’s touchscreen will be facing when set in place.

Once you place the lid on top and the printer starts going, the app makes your phone’s screen light up with a specific pattern. The polarised glass then takes all this light (which shines outwardly to give your phone a wider viewing angle) and redirects it so that all the photons are travelling straight upward.

So as your phone’s screen beams light up into the reservoir, the directed light causes a layer of resin to harden onto the build plate, which slowly moves upward as each new layer is created.

The gadget is priced at $99 and its first shipments are expected to start in September.

              Score: Gionee Marathon M5 has earned a feature score of  86 on Pricejugaad.com. This is a pretty good score and easily one of the better phones in this price range.

              Features: The major advantages of this Smartphone are amazing battery life, good RAM memory and reasonable built. The disadvantages though are its weight, low display quality.
