LG Unveils Fingerprint Sensor That Sits Under a Smartphone Display

Apple began pioneering smartphone fingerprint sensors in its smartphones a few years ago, with the iPhone 5s. Since then, numerous manufacturers have introduced fingerprint sensors on their smartphones. Now, LG is doing the pioneering, and is touting its new fingerprint sensor that sits under the display. This means that when you will place your finger on the cover glass of the display, the under glass fingerprint sensor module would automatically identify your fingerprint.

Announced on Monday by LG Innotek CEO Jongseok Park, the under glass fingerprint sensor module will not only eliminate dedicated buttons, pads, or other elements for fingerprint recognition, but will also help make the smartphone more water resistant by reducing the number of openings. This might also result in slimmer devices in future.

LG Innotek says it has cut 0.01-inch (0.3mm) slot on the back of the cover display glass and has installed a fingerprint sensor in it with “supreme precision and combination technology.”

It has been mentioned that the fingerprint sensor module has a false acceptance rate (FAR) of 0.002 percent. LG adds that the adherence side of both the glass and the fingerprint sensor is 0.0098-inch (0.25mm) thick and can resist the impact of a 130 gram steel ball dropped from 7.9-inch.

“We are concentrating on all our resources to the development of the differentiated technology based on the creation of customer values. We will continue to provide convenient, safe, and pleasant user experiences by launching innovative product,” said Changhwan Kim, Head of Research and Development Centre LG.

LG has not yet revealed when exactly we would start seeing this technology in smartphones or other devices. However, this might happen soon as a company spokesperson has said to The Korea Times that it is in talks with some smartphone brands to commercialize the product within this year. “We are in talks with some handset manufacturers to commercialise the new modules within the year.” The company in December last year was tipped to supply Oled displays for upcoming iPhone models.

Pupils face home quizzes under SNP state guardian plan

Primary school pupils are facing questions about their home lives

Scottish schoolchildren are to be questioned about their private lives in “Orwellian” psychological tests introduced as part of the SNP’s state guardian scheme, it has been alleged.

The No to the Named Person Campaign claimed that councils were using the questions to “squeeze confidential information” out of pupils that would be stored on local authority databases.

The results would be analysed so councils can identify which youngsters are potentially at risk at home. Among the methods identified is a prompt card system developed by Angus Council and adopted by other local authorities.

It urges named persons to ask pupils a series of questions about their domestic lives to assess whether they are at risk, such as whether their homes are “cosy”, details of their diets and who chooses what they wear.

The cards even question where pupils’ families go to buy their food and clothes, what their bedrooms look like and whether they have ever been in a dangerous situation.

Under the legislation, passed last year, the NHS will appoint a health worker to act as the named person for every child until the age of five. The responsibility will then pass to councils until the age of 18, with a teachers expected to adopt the role.

Ministers argue the measure is needed so that potential cases of abuse are spotted early but it is being challenged in the courts by campaigners arguing it breaches parents’ human rights.

Damian Green said a new computer database, being built with government backing, will attempt to speed up the way police can investigate the online images of child abuse.Campaigners have warned pupils’ responses will be added to a computer database  

Simon Calvert, of the No to Named Person campaign, said: “Psychologically manipulating youngsters so you can squeeze confidential information out of them is fundamentally wrong, but to store all this information on a giant council database is foolhardy.

“It really is beyond time that the Scottish Government called a halt to this whole charade before they do any more damage. It’s Orwellian, it’s immoral and it has to stop.”

Teachers across the country are being trained how to assess pupils, with some using a tool called “What I Think” designed for children up to the age of eight, including those at nursery. Information can come from a variety of sources such as conversations, drawings, photographs and recordings.

Named Persons are advised to obtain the data in a “natural” way so that youngsters do not suspect they are being targeted, for example discovering who prepares a child’s meal at home using a casual conversation at snack time.

The system also provides a number of sample scenarios that suggest a child could be at risk, such as them not missing their mother when they stayed overnight elsewhere or them being shouted at by their father after having an accident when playing alone in a park.

However, Maggie Mellon, vice-chairman of the British Association of Social Workers and a former director of the charity Children 1st, told the Mail on Sunday: “The fact that these actually very biased and partial anecdotes will be going on a national database is extremely worrying and should make everyone sit up and say ‘no’.

“Overall, this is a crude tool with no validity – but it will be used and the information interpreted as evidence of child abuse or neglect.”

A Scottish Government spokesman said: “Councils are responsible for producing their own materials to aid discussions with young people and parents to ensure they are happy, well and healthy.

“If a health visitor or senior teacher, acting as a child’s named person, identifies any concerns about well-being they would be expected to offer advice and support, depending on the specific circumstances.”

Angus Council was yesterday unavailable for comment but told the Mail on Sunday the prompt cards were meant to “support” families rather than “assess” them.

School closures triple in Central and Western Africa as education comes under fire

In a new report detailing threats of violence against schools across the region and issues as a ‘Child Alert’, the UN agency warned that a generation of children risks being denied the right to learn.

“Nearly two million children are out of school due to conflict, so it is not an easy number,” UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Muzoon Almellehan, told journalists in Geneva. “It is important to highlight those challenges, to highlight the struggle of those people. They need us, they need our attention.”

From Burkina Faso to Nigeria, more than 9,200 schools shut

Data gathered by UNICEF to June indicates that 9,272 schools have been closed in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Niger and Nigeria as a result of insecurity – three times the number at the end of 2017.

“Schools are being shut down,” according to UNICEF Deputy Executive Director, Charlotte Petri Gornitzka. “Over the past two years, the number of schools that have been shut down has tripled; over 9,000 schools due to the insecurity have been attacked.”

The UNICEF report notes how spreading insecurity across north-west and south-west Cameroon has left more than 4,400 schools forcibly closed.

In Burkina Faso, more than 2,000 schools are closed, along with more than 900 in Mali, owing to increasing violence in both countries.

In the central Sahel region, moreover, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have witnessed a six-fold increase in school closures owing to attacks and threats of violence in just over two years, from 512 in April 2017, to more than 3,000 by June this year.

School closures in the four countries affected by crisis in the Lake Chad Basin – Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria – remained at around 1,000 between the end of 2017 and June 2019.

Just back from visiting a camp for people displaced by violence in central Mali, Ms. Almellehan insisted in Geneva that for many people, herself included, education was vitally important in giving children hope for a better future.

“I had to flee my homeland in Syria in 2013 and I also had to live in refugee camps,” she explained. “It wasn’t easy for me and also I can feel like those children who can’t go to school, because education is something really, really important to me, myself.”

One direct result of children not getting an education is that they are more vulnerable to recruitment by extremists or abuse at their hands such as forced marriage, the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador insisted.

“When a child is not at a school, especially if the child suffers from a very bad economic situation, when they are in poverty, when they don’t have enough awareness, all of that can affect that child and can lead that child to being exploited easily,” she said.

On a wider level, the lack of schooling “is casting a foreboding shadow upon children”, their families, their communities and society at large,” UNICEF said in a statement, noting that more than 40 million six to 14-year-olds are already missing out on school in Central and West Africa.

The agency is working with education authorities and communities to support alternative learning opportunities including community learning centres, radio school programmes, technology for teaching and learning, and faith-based learning initiatives.

It is also providing tools for teachers who work in dangerous locations, and psychosocial support and care for schoolchildren emotionally scarred by violence.

$221 million appeal across seven countries only 28 per cent funded

“Now more than ever, governments must reaffirm their commitment to education and protect spending on education for their youngest citizens,” the UNICEF report insists. “Now is the time for renewed efforts to make sure the potential of a generation of young people is not wasted,” it emphasized, highlighting a funding gap of 72 per cent of the $221 million required for educational programmes across seven countries in the region.

'Indian Campuses Under Siege' Says Fact-Finding Jury of Human Rights Defenders

New Delhi: In the last few years, the number of universities in Gujarat has swelled from 15 to over 50. “But these universities have no buildings, professors, vice chancellors, clerks, registrars, etc. Several of them are said to be in primary government schools or in tehsildar’s office.”

Professor Hemant Kumar Shah, of the well-known H.K. Arts College of Ahmedabad, stated this to a fact-finding jury put together by a nation-wide collective of human rights defenders called the People’s Commission on Shrinking Democratic Space in India (PCSDS), to delve into the state of university campuses since 2014.

Professor Hemant also added that the shortage of teachers “was so bad” in his state that he was asked by his head “to teach environmental science to all second semester students in the college together in the hall which has a seating capacity of 735 people, since the college didn’t have enough teachers to take division-wise classes”.

In February, Shah was in the news for resigning from his post as the in-charge principal of the college protesting the trust body’s decision to cancel an event in the institution featuring its alumnus Jignesh Mewani.

Ramakant, a student of the fine arts department of Patna University could identify with Shah’s outlook on the shortage of teachers in government-funded universities and colleges, mainly stemming from an increased cut in funding. Ramakant and fellow students have been demanding the appointment of permanent teachers among other facilities in their university for some time now. He told the jury members comprising PCSDS’ People’s Tribunal on Attacks on Educational Institutions in India that,

“The university doesn’t have any permanent teacher and even the ad-hoc teacher has been removed.”

The state of Delhi University is marginally different, he said, because although there are 5000 vacancies, “almost all are filled with or operated by ad-hoc teachers.”

Such testimonials of students and teachers – of as many as 50 institutions and universities from across 17 states – are now a part of a one-of-a-kind report on the condition of various university campuses under the Narendra Modi regime. The report, titled ‘Indian Campuses Under Siege‘, was launched in New Delhi on May 7, 2019.

According to Anil Chaudhary, the convener of PCSDS, a total of 130 testimonies of students and faculty members were received from these states between April 11 and 13, 2018. They spoke to the jury comprising Justices (retired) Hosbet Suresh and B.G. Kolse Patil, professors Uma Chakravarty, Amit Bhaduri, T.K. Oommen, Vasanthi Devi, Ghanasyam Shah, Meher Engineer and Kalpana Kannabiran besides journalist-columnist and The Wire‘s public editor Pamela Philipose.

It points out the drastic cut in funding universities, leading to a shortage of teachers and a steep hike in course fees (in some cases from Rs 5,080 to Rs 50,000, triggering the drop-out of students from mainly to SC, ST and OBC groups). Other key findings include centralisation of the admission process; increased privatisation of institutions through policy changes; distortion of history, syllabus and saffronisation of education; appointing loyalists as university heads; the rise of Hindutva forces within the campuses; suppression and criminalisation of dissenting voices; and use of legal measures to curb students’ protests.

The report records, in detail, many cases of students and faculty members who have had to bear the brunt of it, several of them belonging to marginalised sections of society.

The report also says,

“Testimonies presented by students and faculty before the jury revealed a socially exclusive and unjust system prevailing in the higher education institutions, designed to replicate the marginalisations in society. As revealed from the testimonies, the attacks of privatisation and authoritarianism in the campuses have changed in the social composition of students on campus, directly impacting the marginalised sections of society, in particular, the SC, ST and OBC. Coupled with this, the educational institutions have failed to address the systems of oppression and discrimination faced by students both inside and outside the campus on the basis of caste, language, gender, secularity, religion and region.”

Recording his testimony before the jury, Abhay Flavian Xaxa from the Campaign for Dalit Human Rights said ‘intellectual lynching’ of ST, SC and OBC students is occurring during the present regime. This, he said, is done in three ways: “physical discrimination, fiscal discrimination and barriers put up against the policies meant for the educational development of ST, SC and OBC students.”

Offering an instance, Xaxa pointed out that under a new directive on reservation for faculties, “in the Indira Gandhi Tribal National University at Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh, they advertised 52 positions for professors, assistant professors and associate professors. However, not a single post has been given to ST and SC candidates.”

The jury felt, “there has indeed been a systematic onslaught on the very idea of higher education in India…this is deliberate since an educated gentry can put questions to those who rule and is essential for the furthering and deepening of democracy.”

1. Xiaomi Redmi 4

Replacing the Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime, which was one of the strongest picks through much of last year, we now have the Xiaomi Redmi 4, which is also a good pick if your budget for mobile phone is under Rs. 10,000.

 

Our review rated the 3GB/ 32GB variant of the phone 8 on 10 which is really good for a phone at this price point, and the new phone has really good battery life and a sleek and compact design. The camera is disappointing, but it’s a problem that even the best phones under the Rs. 10,000 price must live with. 2. Yu Yureka Black

Yu had a bit of a slow year last year as it wasn’t prepared for the fast adoption of 4G, but it’s back now and the Yu Yureka Black is a pretty good choice for a good phone under Rs. 10,000. Its display is a little disappointing, but it does well on other fronts, and is a good value for money phone.

 

The Yu Yureka Black looks good, and has solid battery life and good overall performance, so if you’re looking for a good all-rounder, this phone is a pretty good option in the sub-Rs. 10,000 price bracket.

3. Lenovo K6 Power

One of the best phones from the last year at this price point, the Lenovo K6 Power is still a good choice if you’re looking for a mobile phone under Rs. 10,000, with performance that’s still good enough, and excellent battery life.

 

The display and camera are also rated very well, but the baseline has shifted up a little since it launched so although it’s still a good phone, it’s not head and shoulders above the others mentioned here, despite what the numbers might suggest. That being said, it’s still a pretty good pick, and it also recently received an update to Android Nougat, making it more value for money than others which are still using Marshmallow. Plus, it’s a lot easier to get your hands on than some of the others on the list.

Available at just under Rs. 10,000, the Moto G4 is another good mobile with a disappointing camera, which is a common complaint at this price. However, it has a good display and decent performance, and it’s also a good looking device.

Relatively weak battery life and middling performance keep it from the top of the list, but there’s not so much of a difference either, so if you like the design and the UI, then this phone might also be a good phone for less than Rs. 10,000.

Looking at older phones, the Micromax Canvas 6 Pro is not a bad choice – it comes with a good amount of RAM, but the battery life and camera are a letdown, and the phone also heats up, so it didn’t make the main list.
