On Wednesday, a meeting was held at New Delhi by the Central Advisory Board of Education, and all the states reached to a consensus that Board exams would get re-introduced in the fifth and eighth standard.
Few years back, the board exams for class 10 students of CBSE schools had also become optional under the right to education act. After the decision was taken, lots of parents and teachers protested against the same, raising concern on deteriorating learning outcomes among students.
But now, there are possibilities that the same can make a comeback, making it mandatory for students to appear for it.
The proposal of bringing back the board exams for classes 5 and 8 was sent to the Union ministry for approval after it was proposed by the Madhya Pradesh state advisory council. This step has been taken after it was observed that the academic performance of the students was declining as they were not taking their exams seriously now as board exams have been made optional.
Also there are chances that the automatic promotion up to class 8 under the UPA-era no-detention policy may be eliminated. It was the first meeting after the NDA government came to power.
The school education minister Paras Jain was also present in the meeting which was headed by Smriti Irani, the Union Minister of Human Resource Development. Last year, Minister Jain had apprised Union HRD Minister of this issue and had also presented a memorandum in this regard.
Board exams will be restarted in all the states from next academic year once the consent is taken at the meeting of Central Advisory Board of Education in writing.
