The Maharashtra Congress has announced that it will hold state wide protests next month, in order to press the government for the demand of quota for Muslims in education. Congress party is set to hold the protests across Maharashtra on September 7. It aims at moving the government to provide a five percent quota in the education sector for Muslims.
On August 26, the former Congress minister, Mohammed Arif Naseem Khan, was speaking in Mumbai and said that, “We demand that the quota for Muslims in education which was partly endorsed by the (Bombay) High Court be implemented by promulgation of ordinance. The party will give memorandum to this effect to collectors in all districts.”
He further added that, “We will hold demonstrations on September 7 across the state demanding implementation of five per cent quota for Muslims in education.”
“If the state government does not act on the demand, the party will intensify its agitation,” Khan added.
Earlier this year, in March, the BJP government in Maharashtra had scrapped an ordinance providing reservation for Muslims, despite the Bombay High Court allowing quota for the community, in educational institutions. At that time, Congress had lashed out at the Devendra Fadnavis government, saying the BJP’s every step and legislative action is guided by the politics of communalism.
