Official: Windows for Workstations returns in Fall Creators Update

Microsoft is reviving Windows Workstations with a new cut of Windows titled “Windows 10 Pro for Workstations”.

The last time your vultures heard “Windows for Workstations” was the 1990s when Redmond used that moniker to market flavors of 16-bit Windows 3 with networking stacks. Then along came the 32-bit NT Workstation editions – such as Windows NT Workstation 4.0 launched in 1996. The term Workstation fell away as Microsoft labelled its operating systems Server, Home, Pro, Enterprise, and so on.

Fast forward to June this year, and it emerged Microsoft was bringing it back with the upcoming release of Windows 10 Pro for Workstations. Now, the software giant has officially announced this edition of Windows, listing its confirmed features.

This time around the target is power users, not the mainstream: Microsoft’s bringing back the name and a workstation product because its says some Windows 10 users wanted a version of the OS that can handle higher-performing hardware.

The new version of Windows can therefore run up to four CPUs and they can be Xeons or Opterons instead of their less-powerful cousins intended for desktops. The new OS will also be able to handle six terabytes of RAM.

The OS also runs ReFS, the Resilient File System adopted in Windows Server 2012, rather than the NTFS used in other cuts of Windows 10. Another notable storage-related feature is SMB Direct, which when paired with Remote Direct Memory Access-enabled NICs will speed data into and out of PCs running Windows 10 Pro for Workstations.

Persistent memory is another option, thanks to NVDIMM-N support.

Microsoft’s intent here is clear: the world buys about a million workstations each year and right now Windows 10 isn’t a good choice for plenty of them. The new cut of the OS will change that.

Microsoft’s not offered pricing for the new version of Windows.

Interestingly, the new OS is at first glance overkill for Microsoft’s own workstation, the Surface Studio, as it maxes out with a Core i7 and has an integrated Ethernet port that appears not to support RDMA. If Microsoft upgrades the Studio to suit Windows 10 Pro for Workstations it will be a mighty machine indeed.

Massive No Man’s Sky update adds multiplayer, 30 hours of story and much more

No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games just released Atlas Rises, the third major update for the space exploration game, on both PlayStation 4 and Windows PC. Coming 367 days after No Man’s Sky launched, Atlas Rises sounds like the game’s biggest expansion yet. Significant new elements include a preliminary implementation of multiplayer features, 30 hours of story content alongside a revamped quest system, the ability to edit terrain, and an overhauled galactic economy.

“This update marks the one year anniversary of No Man’s Sky, and a lot has changed,” said Hello Games. “This is the next step on our journey.”

As with the two previous expansions to No Man’s Sky, November’s Foundation update and March’s Path Finder update, the Atlas Rises update is full of changes and fixes based on community feedback. No Man’s Sky players have long been asking for features such as the ability to salvage crashed freighters, fly close to planets’ surfaces and land a ship without being automatically ejected from the cockpit — and they can now do all of those things.

Hello Games’ willingness to adapt to its fans’ desires is noteworthy, particularly because some of its post-launch changes to No Man’s Sky have seemed to contradict the studio’s original vision for a “chill game.” At launch, the game was a relatively directionless experience. It soon became clear that the majority of players wanted more structure — or at least more activities — and Hello Games has responded in Atlas Rises with a new story. Here’s the studio’s synopsis:

In the Atlas Rises story, the fabric of existence is starting to falter. A mysterious new interdimensional race have appeared. Glitches are causing ancient portals to activate. […] Discover the truth behind the Abandoned Building logs, the World of Glass, the Sentinels, the Redemption of the Gek, and the meaning of sixteen… After Waking Titan, Atlas Rises.

Hello Games is promising “double the lore and interactions of the existing game”; presumably, the new alien race will provide much of that. The studio has implemented a proper quest system, along with new features to support it, such as a communicator inside your ship that allows you to interact with characters even when you’re on the go. The developer has also expanded upon the existing fetch-quest-style missions with “constantly generated” missions that are “unique and rewarding.” And the process of building up your reputation with each alien race — as well as other elements of your progress through the game — is now codified and tracked in the redesigned menu interface.

The Atlas Rises update also brings more variety to No Man’s Sky, just as the Foundation and Path Finder updates did. In this case, the changes are centered around planets and their biomes, with new “exotic planet types” popping up as you approach the galactic core. Atlas Rises also gives you the power to change planets yourself: A new terrain manipulator allows you to sculpt the landscape with the Multi-Tool. It works “anywhere on any planet,” and lets you choose from various materials, shapes and sizes.

Nintendo SNES Classic Mini Pre-Orders From 'Late This Month'

Nintendo has announced that the SNES Classic Mini console will be available for pre-order later this August. The news comes via the company’s Facebook page.

“We appreciate the incredible anticipation that exists for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition system, and can confirm that it will be made available for pre-order by various retailers late this month,” the company said in a post.

Furthermore, it claims to have increased the number of units that will be made present at stores in order to avoid a scenario akin to the NES Classic, that was hard to find at launch and even tougher to find soon after.

“A significant amount of additional systems will be shipped to stores for launch day, and throughout the balance of the calendar year,” the post reads.

Earlier, Nintendo confirmed that the SNES Classic will be available for this year only. The complete quote is as follows:

“We aren’t providing specific numbers, but we will produce significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition. Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition is currently planned to ship from Sept. 29 until the end of calendar year 2017. At this time, we have nothing to announce regarding any possible shipments beyond this year.

Our long-term efforts are focused on delivering great games for the Nintendo Switch system and continuing to build momentum for that platform, as well as serving the more than 63 million owners of Nintendo 3DS family systems. We are offering Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition in special recognition of the fans who show tremendous interest our classic content.”

Paytm update: No need to open app now, transfer money directly from phone book; here’s how

One of India’s most popular mobile applications Paytm has just rolled out a new update. Under the latest changes being made, Paytm has launched a new feature where it will enable users to send money without even opening the app. This new update is a major change as it will make money sharing and easier process on the app and it is meant for that. Paytm will essentially enable users to share money with his/her contacts directly from the phonebook app. They will now have no reason to open the Paytm app every time they wish to make a transaction unless they prefer to do so.

It should be noted that the latest feature on Paytm is currently only available for Android smartphones only. This means iOS users cannot avail the service right now, but may expect it to launch on their devices soon. Paytm says the new feature is designed to make it easier for users to send money to friends and family. The app will put Paytm in direct competition with WhatsApp, which is currently the biggest messaging app in India with over 200 million monthly active users. Interestingly the report comes as WhatsApp is working on integrating UPI payments service within the app. Paytm claims to have over 200 million users in India.

Here’s how to use the new feature to make payments via Paytm: Just open the contacts list on your smartphone, select a contact, tap on ‘Send Money’ and enter the desired amount to instantly transfer money. A user will need to update their Paytm app as well in order to enable the feature. Also, you will need to give Paytm access to your contacts book in order for this feature to work.

While the new feature will make payments from Paytm directly integrated into contacts, reports indicate the company has plans to go beyond the payments space. A new report by PTI had said Paytm is planning to introduce a messaging service, which will be rolled out by the end of the month.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Speaks Up About Removal of VPN Apps in China

Apple last month removed software allowing Internet users to skirt China’s ‘Great Firewall’ from its app store in the country, sparking criticism that it was bowing to Beijing’s tightening Web censorship.

Chinese Internet users have for years sought to get around heavy Internet restrictions, including blocks on Facebook and Twitter, by using foreign virtual private network (VPN) services.

Beijing mandated in January that all developers must obtain government licenses to offer VPNs, leading to the Apple decision.

During the Q3 2017 earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook commented on the issue, “Essentially, as a requirement for someone to operate a VPN, they have to have a license from the government there. Earlier this year, they began a renewed effort to enforce that policy, and we were required by the government to remove some of the VPN apps from the App Store that don’t meet these new regulations. We understand that those same requirements are on other app stores, and as we checked through that, that is the case.”

“We would obviously rather not remove the apps, but like in other countries, we obey the laws where we do business,” Cook said. “And we strongly believe that participating in markets and bringing benefits to customers is in the best interest of the folks there and in other countries as well. And so we believe in engaging with governments even when we disagree,” Cook added.

Cook maintained that the App Store in China remained stocked with licensed VPN apps, including creations from developers outside that country.

“We are hopeful that over time, the restrictions we are seeing are loosened, because innovation really requires freedom to collaborate and communicate, and I know that is a major focus there,” Cook said.
