Google's Voice Recognition Accuracy Grew 20 Percent in 4 Years, Notes Meeker

Google over the past year has been focusing greatly on its artificial intelligence and machine learning technology as it tries to push its voice-based Assistant service widely and across products. At Google I/O 2017, CEO Sundar Pichai opened the keynote by claiming that the company’s voice recognition software has an error rate of under 5 percent. A recent report further highlights Google data to reveal how this accuracy has grown over the years.

The Internet search giant has come a long way in machine learning and its understanding human language has improving by an impressive 20 percent in the last four years, according to the Internet Trends 2017 report by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers partner Mary Meeker.

Google’s stats are particularly impressive when taking into account that its voice recognition accuracy is now nearly at par with that of human accuracy. And Google has made it clear that it doesn’t wish to stop there. Google Assistant has been a success story for that company as being one of the very few AI voice-based digital assistants out there that can understand contextual speech. The company has expanded Assistant’s capability and reach over the past year, which can now be found in Google’s Home speaker, Android smartphones like Pixel and Galaxy S8, messaging app Allo, Android Wear 2.0, and now more interestingly, the iPhone.

Recently, Assistant got some more improvements such as the ability to schedule appointments and add reminders through Google Home, make hands-free calls with Home, and see visual responses from Assistant on your TV through Chromecast. Google’s voice recognition software also allows it to detect various accents better than its competitors like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa.

Exclusive: Catholics plan 20,000 new school places

Between 15,000 and 20,000 new Catholic school places will be created if government plans to lift restrictions on admissions for new faith schools go ahead, the church said this week.

Paul Barber, director of the Catholic Education Service, says that there are plans to open between 30 and 40 new Catholic schools, and claims that this will benefit society.

“Our schools have always been about social cohesion and social diversity,” he said, “precisely because they’re successful and very popular with parents.”

The new Green Paper proposes removing the requirement that new faith schools must offer half of their places to those of other religions or none. The rule led the Catholic church to choose not to open any new schools, saying that turning away Catholic pupils was against canonical law.

‘Meeting Catholic need’

Helen Bates, of the East Anglia diocese – which the church says is likely to open more new schools than any other Catholic diocese – claims removing the requirement will ensure more diversity by allowing enough new capacity in her schools for pupils of all and no faiths.

“As a result of not having enough places, we have lots of schools that are entirely Catholic,” she said. “But, as long as we’re meeting the Catholic need, we’d want to see places for other faiths and no faiths in our schools.”

The Catholic population in East Anglia grew from more than 97,000 in 2010 to more than 107,000 in 2014. Ms Bates said that this was largely a result of immigration from Eastern Europe and the Philippines. One of the area’s schools – St Bede’s Inter-church School in Cambridge, operated jointly by the Catholic church and the Church of England – received 400 applications for 160 places last year.

But Jay Harman, of the British Humanist Association, questioned whether the removal of the capwas positive.

“Parents want good schools rather than faith schools,” he said. “They think that the best way of getting a good local school is getting a faith school.”

Realme GT 2 series is finally set to launch on December 20

Realme has finally announced a special launch event for the Realme GT 2 series. The event is scheduled for December 20 and the company is expected to announce the Realme GT 2 lineup. There is a possibility that the company may launch its flagship phone – Realme GT 2 Pro as well during the event.

While we know that the Realme GT 2 Pro will rock the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, Gizmochina also reports that the smartphone might come with up to a massive 1TB of onboard storage, a Quad HD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM.

The phone is expected to come with a 32-MP under-display selfie camera and a triple camera setup at the back with a 50 MP primary sensor, a 50 MP ultra-wide shooter and a telephoto snapper.

True flagship but not so true tactics

A few months back, OnePlus surprised everyone with an event announcement. Since this is par for the course when new devices arrive thick and fast, we didn’t feel that there was anything amiss. What did surprise us was that their event coincided with Samsung’s foldable phones launch. To be honest, till that time all we had heard was random rumblings that OnePlus is working on a foldable phone – that’s it.

We know OnePlus is within its rights to launch a product on the day when rival has planned to do so. However, it was a bit of an anti-climax that OnePlus arrived with an offer on its flagship device instead of a matching product that it had teased.

If you’re wondering why we’re talking about OnePlus in a story about the launch of a Realme flagship, then you need to read the announcement that the Chinese phone maker made a few days back.

Realme hinted on social media that its first true flagship phone – Realme GT 2 Pro with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC will be announced on December 9 – the same day when Moto had scheduled a launch event for Moto Edge X30.

Though Motorola ended up launching one more smartphone, Realme was missing from the scene altogether. Some of its executives, whom we reached out to were equally confused as us, if not more.

While we are sure that this was done to take some sheen off the Moto event and grab some headlines, Moto still ended up launching the first phone with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC and the marketing gimmick by Realme wasn’t in the best of spirits, and we’re sure many followers also weren’t amused.

Huawei erects AI-powered Rubik’s Cube in London to celebrate the Mate 20 launch

Huawei announced the Mate 20 Pro last week in London and to celebrate, Huawei has erected a large, digital version of a classic puzzle game: the Rubik’s Cube. The idea is to demonstrate the power of Huawei’s NPU, which minimizes the energy and time required to make large calculations.

To solve the puzzle, a player must use the app on a Mate 20 Pro in front of the giant Cube. “Each move is passed through the AI model and algorithms to give the user hints, via the app, about what the best next move is.”

Puzzle cubes have caused debate amongst mathematicians for decades, with numerous theories about the most efficient way to solve them. Riding through bumpy and curvy roads to hill stations can be an exhausting experience, especially for those from low altitude areas or metro cities. Apart from the time such journeys take, long-distance driving in mountainous areas can be troublesome for many. Shimla in Himachal Pradesh that features in everyone’s places-to-covered-in-life list is one such destination. The serpentine roads and time constraints can, sometimes, pose obstacles for travellers. But not anymore. The Himachal Pradesh government on Monday launched a helicopter taxi service from Shimla to Chandigarh, a journey that will take not more than just 20 minutes between the cities. The service is expected to boost heli texi tourism in the state, and in future could be expanded to other tourist areas as well.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur flagged off the Shimla-Chandigarh heli taxi service from the Jubbarhatti Airport near the hill station. “The Queen of Hills, being one of the leading travel destinations, would now be connected through heli taxi service from Chandigarh. We would try to connect other cities of the state through the service in future,” said Thakur.

He said that the service would give a boost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s UDAN scheme and his vision of giving common man a chance to fly. Along with that, it would certainly give a boost to Himachal’s tourism prospects, he added.

So why should one avail the heli taxi service? The 113-km journey between the two cities usually takes over three hours by car, over four hours by bus and over five hours by train. The heli taxi service, launched in association with Pawan Hans Ltd, will be available on Mondays and Fridays for a minimum price of Rs 2,999.

The service has been launched to specially cater to the people of Himachal, Punjab and Haryana. The heli taxi service would also be useful for people who want to go to the Queen of Hills but don’t want to take bus or train. It will be a 20-minute morning flight between the two destinations. The chopper will take off from Shimla at 8 am and reach Chandigarh at 8.20 am. For passengers planning their journey from Chandigarh to Shimla, the flight will take off at 9 am from Chandigarh airport and reach Shimla at 9.20 am. For convenience of the travelers,  HPTDC Deluxe Bus will be available at Jubberhatti Airport and at Lift, Shimla.

Initially, the services would be available every Monday and Friday. The frequency would be increased depending on response to the services.

  • The travelling time for one side will be 20 minutes.
  • The service to be available on every Monday and Friday.
  • Departure from Jubberhatti, Shimla Airport, at 8 am and arrival time at Chandigarh Airport at 8:20 am.
  • Departure time from Chandigarh Airport will be 9 am and arrival time at Jubberhatti, Shimla Airport, at 9:20 am.
  • HPTDC Deluxe Bus will be available at Jubberhatti Airport and at Lift Shimla.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a new mobile app — UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) which will allow citizens to access government services on a single platform.

The app was slated to be released in December last year. The services on the app include Aadhaar, DigiLocker, Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) among others. More than 162 services from 33 departments and four states are already live on it. The app is available on Android, iOS and Windows phones.

Japanese electronics giant Sony has expanded its noise cancellation headphones lineup in India with the launch of four new models: WI-1000X, WH-1000XM2, WF-1000X and WH-H900N. The WH-1000XM2 and WH-H900N will be available at Rs 18,990 and Rs 29,990, respectively starting December 14. Whereas, the WF-1000X and WI-1000X are priced at Rs 14,990 and Rs 21,990 and will be available starting today. All the headphones will be available across all Sony Centers and major electronic stores in India.

HMD -Global, the company who holds the license of manufacturing Nokia branded smartphones has announced the price and availability of Nokia 2smartphone in India. Customers can purchase the Nokia 2 at Rs 6,999 from all the leading retail stores.

The Nokia 2 comes with a 5-inch HD display with 720×1280 pixel resolution. The device runs Android 7.0 Nougat and will also receive an Android 8.0 Oreo update.

The smartphone is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 processor paired with 1GB of RAM. The device offers 8GB internal storage which can be expanded up to 128GB by inserting a microSD card. The device sports an 8MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash and 5MP front camera with fixed focus. Nokia 2 houses a 4,100 mAh battery, which the company claims can last up to 2 days in a single charge.

American technology company Garmin has launched its latest wearable device in India. Unveiled at IFA 2017 in Berlin, the company has now launched the Garmin vivoactive 3 at Rs 24,990. The Garmin vivoactive 3 comes equipped with Garmin Pay, a wireless payment platform of the company. The service is compatible with credit and debit cards from MasterCard. The smartwatch features a 1.2-inch display with 240×240 pixel resolution. The company also claims that the device is water resistant with up to 5 ATM level. The smartwatch promises to run for up to 13 hours on GPS mode and up to 7 days on the smartwatch mode. It is also capable of recording 7 timed activities and 14 days of activity tracking. Along with this, the wearable can also track the sleep, steps and overall health of the user. It is compatible with both Android and iOS smartphones.

HP has expanded its gaming laptop product portfolio with the launch of Omen 15 and Omen 17. The company claims that the new devices are designed for e-sports athletes and competitive gamers.

The laptops come with 10 Series GTX graphics from Nvidia and high-resolution displays with optional G-Sync technology for fast refresh rates. The HP Omen 15 comprises of the CE070TX, CE071TX, CE072TX, CE073TX, and CE074TX models.

The laptops run Windows 10 operating system and is powered by seventh-generation Intel Core i5 processor. It offers 8GB of DDR4 RAM and 1TB Serial ATA HDD with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050.

The high-end version of the series is powered by seventh-generation Intel Core i7 processor paired with 16GB of RAM and 1TB HDD and the same Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphics.

On the other hand, the company has introduced two models under the Omen 17 series — AN009TX and AN010 TX. The devices boast of a 17.3-inch LED backlit display with full HD resolution. The laptops are powered by seventh-generation Intel Core i7 coupled with 16GB of DDR4 RAM and 1TB of Serial ATA HDD with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 graphics.

Moto X4 has been launched in India. The latest Moto X-Series smartphone from Lenovo brand Moto will be exclusively available on Flipkart in India. Apart from its dual rear camera setup and front flash module, the smartphone is also IP68-rated for dust and water resistance. The Moto X4 also comes with Amazon Alexa support, however, this feature won’t be accessible until Amazon releases the Moto Alexa app, the company revealed to Gadgets 360. Lenovo is also claiming the Moto X4 is the first smartphone running on the new Snapdragon 630 SoC to be launched in India. The Moto X4 has been launched in two variants in India – 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage and 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage – and both feature dual-SIM support. Moto X4 price in India starts at Rs. 20,999 for the 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage variant, while the 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage variant is priced at Rs. 22,999. It will be available in Super Black and Sterling Blue colour variants, exclusively from Flipkart and Moto Hub shops. The Moto X4 goes on sale at 11:59pm on Monday, November 13.

The dual-SIM (Nano) Moto X4 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. It sports a 5.2-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) LTPS IPS display with a pixel density of 424ppi and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. It is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 630 SoC clocked at up to 2.2GHz, coupled with up to 4GB of RAM.

As for the dual rear camera setup on the Moto X4, Lenovo has chosen a 12-megapixel primary camera with a Dual Autofocus Pixel sensor, an f/2.0 aperture, and 1.4-micron pixels. The setup also consists of a 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle sensor with a 120-degree field of view, an f/2.2 aperture, and 1.12-micron pixels. The dual rear camera setup is accompanied by a colour correlated temperature (CCT) dual-LED flash and supports phase detection autofocus (PDAF). Overall, the setup helps provide such photography modes as ultra-wide angle shots, selective focus, as well as depth detection and depth effects like Bokeh.

The Moto X4’s front camera features 16-megapixel sensor with 1-micron pixels and an f/2.0 aperture, which the company says will help in low-light photography. Of course, the selfie flash also helps. Apart from a 4-megapixel adaptive low light mode, there is also a beautification mode.

As we mentioned, the Moto X4 is available in two inbuilt storage variants – 32GB or 64GB – both of which are expandable via microSD card (up to 2TB). Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth v5.0, dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS/ A-GPS, USB Type-C, NFC, FM radio, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Sensors on board include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, gyroscope, and a proximity sensor.

The Moto X4 measures 148.35×73.4×7.99mm (9.45mm at camera bump) and weighs 163 grams. It is powered by a 3000mAh non-removable ‘all-day’ battery, which when coupled with a 15W TurboPower charger (bundled in the box) will provide up to 6 hours of power in 15 minutes of charge.

We’ve mentioned some of the biggest features of the Moto X4, such as its IP68-rating for dust and water resistance. Its Bluetooth v5.0 connectivity has also been leveraged to allow the smartphone to sync with up to four speakers, headphones at a time – something Moto is calling a Wireless Sound System. It also bears a fingerprint sensor on the home button.

Other features include Moto Experiences, with gestures like a 3-finger swipe for screenshots, as well as a built-in password manager called Moto Key. There are also features like one-button navigation, Moto Display, and Moto Voice. The rear camera is also capable of landmark/ object recognition, and can also scan barcodes and QR codes. When scanning business cards, the smartphone automatically adds the contact.
