IRCTC Offers Rs. 50 Cashback on Tickets Bought Using New mVisa Payment Method

Rail travellers using IRCTC can now book train tickets by mVisa payment method that allows them to scan a QR code and pay through smartphones. Users can securely link their visa debit, credit, or prepaid account to the mVisa application on their smartphones and make their travel bookings by simply scanning their mVisa QR code on the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website.

IRCTC, a subsidiary of the Indian Railways, is offering a promotion offer until September 4 that will give Rs. 50 cashback to consumers booking their tickets through mVisa scan and pay on the IRCTC website.

“The key to our success as India’s largest e-commerce organisation has been our ability to embrace new technologies that help us drive consumer engagement across our platform,” IRCTC CMD AK Manocha said on Tuesday. “Considering the phenomenal penetration of smartphones in India, moving to a mobile based payment solution such as mVisa was thus a natural choice for IRCTC,” he added.
The mVisa payment solution on IRCTC can potentially empower millions of consumers spread across Indian cities, towns and villages, to make payments using just their smartphones from the comfort of their homes.

India is currently one of the major smartphone markets in the world, with over a billion smartphones expected to be sold in the next five years. The increasing popularity and adoption of mobile devices presents a huge opportunity for the growth of mobile-based digital commerce.

How I Turned Engineers Into Bloggers With 50,000 Views

B2B marketing writers are not boring — they are bored. In the rat race for SEO, clicks and visibility, they’re pressured to write at a relentless pace. Consequently, they sacrifice clarity to jargon, experience to corporate-speak, the personal for the impersonal. In most cases, they don’t even put a name on the byline. Most B2B content out there is “Nothing” by No One.

Not surprisingly, marketers struggle to capture the passion, expertise, and experiences of their organization. The alternative is to mobilize your entire team — engineers, designers, HR, salespeople, and marketers — into an army of bloggers.

B2B content normally sterilizes the human experience. Companywide blogging restores it. When you liberate employees to write what they care about, the content can build your brand. Excited people tend to write exciting stuff.

That’s what I discovered at my company JotForm. 10 years ago, I started blogging. Whether I attracted readers or not, writing was intrinsically valuable. The blog became a place to untangle ideas. It was the mental equivalent of putting data into a graph. When I took the unstructured information from my brain and organized it in a meaningful form, I discovered its real essence. You don’t really know what you know until you attempt to communicate it.

You could come up with dozens of reasons why I shouldn’t ask my team members to blog. Aytekin, it’s a waste of their time – programmers should program and designers should design. Aytekin, who wants to read long blog posts these days? Aytekin, why not just keep that stream of mini-posts rolling through your Facebook and Twitter feeds? If you ask, who’s going to take up the challenge of blogging anyway?

Here’s my response: Who better to write about programming than programmers? Who better to talk design than designers? When experts on the ground share their craft with passion, people not only want but demand the details.

Sure, social content is easier, but it’s ephemeral. The social feed is like a fashion runway where all the models speed walk. And to the last objection, have you ever asked your employees to write? When I did, it went better than expected. Here’s what worked:

  • Ask people to brainstorm ideas from their day-to-day experiences. The internet is already full of opinions and tips divorced from knowledge. When your colleagues just write about what they’re doing, ‘smart’ ideas emerge naturally.
  • Make it concrete. Employees will all struggle with the same question: What should I write about? I ask them to pitch me three ideas, and I choose the most compelling one. That condenses an infinite list of possibilities into one, defined assignment.
  • Promote craftsmanship. Most B2B content is unusable. Often, you can’t implement the tips without buying the company’s product. Instead, ask your team to write about how they approach their craft. Specifically, tell your people to write what they want to read.
  • Beware the 4-1 Rule. If you encourage four employees to write blog posts by a particular deadline, one person is going to do it. That’s what I’ve observed, anyway. If you want six blog posts, bring it up to 24 people.
  • Let marketing handle edits and revisions. They will help your team members overcome the anxiety of writing with proper grammar, syntax, etc. Leave redlines to the pros.
  • Repeat winning themes. We find that readers gravitate towards similar types of articles. Some have chalked up more than 50,000 views. I’d label them under the following meta-topics:
    • Here’s something difficult I accomplished, and here’s how I did it.
    • Judgment call: Why you should do A or use B
    • Lessons learned: What X taught me about Y

Blogging builds your company brand by unveiling its human nature. In a competitive market, buyers can’t distinguish between products easily. They can, however, differentiate between the thoughts and personalities of the sellers.

Thus, blogging is a way to earn not just mindshare but trust and appreciation as well. It gives you a local, personal feel in an otherwise global, impersonal technology market. The process is also rewarding. Telling stories has been good for trust-building, morale, and teamwork.

Personally, I want to learn what the world’s most talented people know. So be generous. Spare a bored marketer, and let all of your employees share their passion.

Medium to Cut 50 Jobs as It Changes Its Business Model

US-based online publishing platform Medium said it would slash its workforce by a third, or eliminate 50 jobs, close two offices as the company changes its ad-driven business model.

The job cuts were mostly in sales and support, while the vast majority of the product development and engineering teams would remain, the company said on Wednesday.

The company’s ad-driven publishing model was “becoming an extension of a broken system”, Chief Executive Evan Williams wrote in a post.

Williams did not describe the “new model” the company would create, but said it would reward writers and creators, based on the value they were creating, not just their ability to attract “a few seconds of attention”.

Medium allows users, including companies and media outlets, to post blogs that readers can annotate.

The company said it was shutting down offices in New York and Washington, DC, though some employees would continue to work remotely from these locations.

Gap between rich and poor primary school pupils wider than it was 50 years ago

The UK’s education class divide is wider now than it was half a century ago, new research has revealed, with children from poorer backgrounds already eight months behind their more privileged peers before starting school.

A study into international inequalities by the Sutton Trust found the UK falls behind Canada and Australia in terms of the literacy gap between pupils from the poorest and most affluent backgrounds.

Inequality levels are even larger in the US education system, where disadvantaged pupils are around one year behind before they even start primary school.

Five-year-olds in Canada and Australia with less educated parts fall behind their more advantaged peers by approximately six months at the point of starting school – a significantly smaller gap than in the UK.

While inequality has narrowed slightly in the past decade, there is still a noticeably larger gap between social groups than there was for children born 40 to 60 years ago, researchers warned.

The Sutton Trust said greater efforts were needed to reduce the disparity in the UK system, for instance by ensuring that well-trained staff are employed in Early Years settings.

Professor Jane Waldfogel, who led the research brief, said: “We have known for some time that achievement gaps in the US and UK are large. This international research puts them in context – and show that they can and should be smaller.”

By analysing information gleaned from international workshops and recent OECD data, researchers said they were able to compare international practices for better understanding of the best possible policies.

The charity has also called on the government improve access for disadvantaged children to the best early years education and care, ensuring children arrive at primary school on a more equal footing.

Sir Peter Lampl, Founder and Chairman of the Sutton Trust and Chairman of the Education Endowment Foundation, said:  “There is a large difference between the reading attainment of the richest and poorest children in both the US and the UK. Tackling this disparity early on is critical to breaking the cycle of disadvantage and reducing inequality.

“We need to make sure that every child has access to high-quality early years education, so that rich and poor children arrive at school on a more equal footing.”

A DfE spokesperson said: “We want all children to have the best start in life and latest results show the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their counterparts is narrowing but we know there is more to do. We are giving disadvantaged families, including looked after children, extra support through 15 hours of free childcare a week for disadvantaged two year olds, and the Early Years Pupil Premium, which is worth over £300 a year per child.

 “There are already a record number of nurseries, pre-schools and childminders rated as ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’, the proportion of children reaching the expected learning standards continues to rise and more than 16,000 specialist early years graduates have been trained. To build on that success we are creating a workforce strategy to help attract, retain and develop the very best staff and investing more than ever in the sector – £6billion per year by 2020.”

The headteacher who sent home 50 children for breaking school uniform rules has vowed to continue.

Matthew Tate, headmaster at Hatsdown Academy in Margate, Kent, defended his actions in an interview.

Mr Tate reaffirmed the school’s policy and said he and his staff will not be changing their uniform policy.

“We’ve had an overwhelming number of people bullied in year 7 for wearing the wrong uniform, and we won’t move from our stance,” he said on ITV’s This Morning.

“The fact is, I care far too much about the children in this school to allow them to do what they like and the reality is, if we’re ensuring those tough standards and ensuring our children are behaving, they will do well.”

The headmaster argued the rules were needed to improve the school.

“For too long, this school has been known for being a bit scruffy, and something’s got to change,” he argued.

The news should not come as surprise as Mr Tate said parents had been warned this would happen in a letter earlier this year, according to Kent Online.

“We wrote to parents to say we would be ensuring our uniform policy is adhered to and that if children were not in perfect uniform today they would be sent home. The majority of our parents are pleased with that.”

Mobile calls and Internet charges rose by up to 50 per cent in the country from today, as private sector players announced their plans to raise tariffs.

The hike announced last Sunday is the first increase in the last five years in the country’s telecom space. Telecom companies’ move to raise mobile tariff follows the Supreme Court judgment on the 24th of October this year, upholding the government’s method of calculating revenue share that it should get from earnings of service providers.

Mobile calls and internet charges will go up by up to 50 per cent in the country, as private sector players – Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio – on Sunday announced their plans to raise tariffs from December 3 onwards.

This is the first hike in last five years in the country’s telecom space that was facing bruising tariff war, with voice calls becoming almost free and data prices fell by 95 per cent to Rs 11.78 per GB from Rs 269 per GB in 2014.

While Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have shared new rates in the “unlimited” category that will replace their existing pre-paid plans with up to 50 per cent higher cost, Reliance Jio said it will roll out new all-in-one plans with unlimited voice and data at up to 40 per cent higher price from December 6.

Vodafone Idea was first to announce “new tariffs/plans for its prepaid products and services. New plans will be available across India starting 00:00 hours of December 3, 2019”.

Bharti Airtel followed Vodafone Idea by announcing similar plans to raise mobile pre-paid services rates.

Vodafone Idea announced maximum increase of 50 per cent in its entry level unlimited plan with a year-long validity of Rs 1,499 with 24 GB data usage limit in place of Rs 999 plan, which comes with 12 GB data usage limit.

Bharti Airtel too announced a similar level of change but kept price of most of the new plans lower by Re 1 compared to that of Vodafone Idea.

From December 3, customers of these two companies will have to shell out a minimum of Rs 49 to make calls, access the internet on mobile and stay connected for four weeks.

Reliance Jio also announced with plans to raise mobile services rates from December 6 onwards.

“The new plans will be effective from December 6, 2019. Although, the new All-In-One plans will be priced up to 40 per cent higher, staying true to its promise of being customer-first, Jio customers will get up to 300 per cent more benefits,” Jio said.

While telecom operators have been offering unlimited voice calling, both Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel have now decided to cap the outgoing calls outside their network from December 3.

Both the companies have capped outgoing calls to network of other telecom operator to 1,000 minutes in case of plans with 28 days validity, 3,000 in 84 days validity plans and 12,000 in 365 days validity plans. Beyond this limit, customer will need to pay 6 paisa per minute for outgoing calls.

Jio has said that that company’s new “plans will have a fair usage policy for calls to other mobile networks”.

The last increase in mobile tariffs was noticed in 2014.

According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), prices of mobile data have fallen drastically by about 95 per cent to Rs 11.78 per gigabyte (GB).

The average cost to subscriber for wireless data in the year 2014 was Rs 269 per GB and Rs 226 per GB in 2015. But, after introduction of 4G technology in India, average cost to subscriber for wireless data usage sharply declined to Rs 75.57 per GB during the year 2016.

Further, average cost to subscriber for wireless data declined from Rs 19.35 per GB in the year 2017 to Rs 11.78 per GB in the year 2018.

Telecom companies’ move to raise mobile tariff follows the Supreme Court judgement, on October 24 this year, upholding the government’s method of calculating revenue share that it should get from earnings of service providers.

Vodafone Idea last month reported a consolidated loss of Rs 50,921 crore — the highest ever loss posted by any Indian corporate — for the September quarter on account of liability arising out of the Supreme Court’s order.

The company has estimated liability of Rs 44,150 crore post the apex court order, and made provisioning of Rs 25,680 crore in the second quarter this fiscal.

Vodafone Idea which is reeling under massive debt of around Rs 1.17 lakh crore had earlier cited acute financial stress on the company behind the decision to raise mobile call and data charges.

Bharti Airtel has posted a staggering Rs 23,045 crore net loss for the second quarter ended September 30, due to provisioning of Rs 28,450 crore in the aftermath of the SC ruling on statutory dues.

According to government data, the liabilities in the case of Bharti Airtel add up to nearly Rs 35,586 crore, of which Rs 21,682 crore is licence fee and another Rs 13,904.01 crore is the SUC dues (excluding the dues of Telenor and Tata Teleservices).

The government is currently not considering any proposal on waiver of penalties and interest on outstanding licence fee based on adjusted gross revenue (AGR), or on extending the timelines for telecom companies to pay up their statutory dues.

According to the offer page, the iPhone X 64GB can be bought at an effective price of Rs. 47,699. Gadgets 360 contacted Sangeetha Mobiles retailers in Hyderabad that quoted a gross price of Rs. 88,000 for this variant. An HDFC card/ consumer loans cashback of Rs. 12,000 is valid on EMI transactions , along with the retailer’s own Rs. 5 percent discount on EMI transactions (up to Rs. 1,500). This gives it an effective price of Rs. 74,500, over and above which exchange discounts can be applied, varying from handset to handset. Do note that Android phones of similar value will also be eligible for the exchange offer on models up to the iPhone 7 Plus. For higher models, a minimum of iPhone 7 32GB models are eligible for exchange.

Additionally, the offer page claims that the iPhone SE 32GB can be bought at a minimum effective price of Rs. 9,990, the iPhone 6 32GB can be bought at Rs. 14,990. The iPhone 6s 32GB has a minimum effective price of Rs. 21,499, the iPhone 8 64GB has a price of Rs. 25,500, the iPhone 8 Plus 64GB has an effective price of Rs. 33,999, and the iPhone 8 Plus 256GB is claimed to have a discounted price of Rs. 45,499. Notably, the phone you wish to exchange should be within official brand warranty.
