Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) are all set to get Android 8.0 Oreo OTA update in the coming weeks. The two smartphones were launched originally in December last year and arrived with Android 7.1.1 Nougat, with Samsung Experience 8.5 on top, out-of-the-box. Firmware version for the Android Oreo update A530FXXU2BRDx.

In a report by Dutch media outlet GalaxyClub, the Oreo update for both the Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) is in the works and said to rollout soon. However, the report notes that it is in its early stage and a stable update should not be expected for the next few weeks at least. Interestingly, a handset launched earlier – Galaxy A7 – started receiving the Android 8.0 Oreo update late last month. Build number of the update is A720FXXU3CRD3.

The Galaxy A8 (2018) sports a 5.6-inch full-HD+ (1080×2280 pixels) display, while the Galaxy A8+ (2018) gets a 6-inch full-HD+ (1080×2280 pixels) display with Super AMOLED panels. Under the hood, both variants get an octa-core SoC with six cores clocked at 1.6GHz and two cores at 2.2GHz. Galaxy A8 (2018) gets 4GB of RAM, while the Galaxy A8+ (2018) has two options – 4GB and 6GB.

These are also Samsung’s first smartphones to sport dual selfie cameras – a primary 16-megapixel fixed focus, f/1.9 sensor and a secondary 8-megapixel f/1.9 sensor. Both come with pre-installed Live Focus feature to help adjust Bokeh effect while clicking portrait shots.

Both smartphones have two inbuilt storage options – 32GB and 64GB. Additionally, there is a 16-megapixel rear sensor – on both smartphones – with a f/1.7 lens. Lastly, the Galaxy A8 (2018) packs in a 3000mAh battery, while the bigger Galaxy A8+ (2018) gets a larger, 3500mAh battery unit.

Nokia 3 (Review) has started receiving its Android 8.0 Oreo update. To recall, the smartphone had been launched back at MWC 2017, before being brought to India in June of the same year. It had been launched with Android 7.0 Nougat, but Nokia licensee HMD Global has been providing assurances from day 1 that it would rollout frequent Android version and security updates for all its smartphones. The company certainly seems to be keeping its promise, and all its smartphones thus far have been receiving timely updates. HMD Global had in December said it would skip the Android 7.1.2 Nougat version update for the Nokia 3, and instead proceed directly to the Android 8.0 Oreo update.

In late-January this year, HMD Global had said the Android Oreo beta update for the smartphone was around the corner, and by the end of February, it had released it. Now, on Tuesday, HMD Global Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas tweeted to say the Android 8.0 Oreo update is now available for Nokia 3. Users can expect a phased rollout over-the-air (OTA). To check if the OTA update is available in your region, visit Settings > About Phone > System Update. We recommend users download the update on Wi-Fi, and, have a minimum of 50 percent of charge before installing. As of writing this copy, it is not known which Android security patch accompanies the Android 8.0 Oreo update. The company had in February rolled out the February Android security patch for the smartphone.

To recall, the Nokia 3 was launched in India at Rs. 9,499. It sports a polycarbonate body and metallic frame on the sides. For specifications, the Nokia 3 has a 5-inch HD display, Android 7.0 Nougat, 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek 6737 SoC. It comes with 16GB of inbuilt storage, which is expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB). Optics include an 8-megapixel camera on both the front and back. The Nokia 3 packs a 2650mAh battery and measures 143.4×71.4×8.4mm.

Within a week of starting the rollout of Android 8.0 Oreo on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+smartphones, Samsung has reportedly stopped it. The South Korean giant had begun the beta testing for Android Oreo in the two flagship smartphones back in November 2017. Three months later, it started to roll out the final version only to apparently halt it.

While the Android Oreo OTA update came as good news for Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners, Samsung has reportedly pulled the plug on it without providing any official details on why the rollout has been halted. As per SamMobile, the Oreo rollout was halted after being released in various markets around the world, including Belgium, Germany, France, India, Norway, Turkey, and the UAE. Also, Samsung is said to be working on the development of a new version.

As per the report, the G950/G955-FXXU1CRAP Android 8.0 firmware files are unavailable for download as of now. Samsung is reportedly developing a new firmware version. SamMobile says that the new Oreo build should be available for download soon, though there is no timeline currently.

To recall, the Android Oreo update came with Samsung Experience 9.0 on top of it, with features such as new launcher shortcuts, coloured media notifications, improvements to biometric functions, improvements to Samsung keyboard, Dual Messenger, and a revamped About Menu in Settings among others. The Oreo update also included Notification dots, Autofill, contextual app shortcuts, Picture-in-Picture, faster boot time, and more.

Meanwhile, Samsung is also expected to release an Android Oreo-based OTA update for the Galaxy J7 Prime and Galaxy Tab E 8.0 smartphones.

All new Honor smartphones will now reportedly come with FullView Display (18:9 display). Huawei has recently launched several smartphones in the budget, mid-range, and premium segments, and most of them feature the FullView Display. But now, as it appears, the company may completely ditch the screens with 16:9 aspect ratio and adopt the 18:9 displays.

According to a well-known tipster Roland Quandt, Honor is migrating its complete smartphone lineupto the new aspect ratio displays. In a tweet on Wednesday, Quandt cited Honor Germany as saying, “there will be no new Honor phones that do not have a FullView display (18:9 ratio) from this point on.” Honor already has several smartphones in its lineup that feature the FullView display, including recently launched handsets like Honor 9 Lite, Honor 7X, Honor View 10, and Honor 9i, among others.

Honor has started rolling out the EMUI 8.0 update, based on Android 8.0 Oreo, for Honor 8 Pro and Honor 9 smartphones. Regarding the Android Oreo-based EMUI 8.0 update, Quandt said Honor 7X users will have to wait till the second quarter of this year. Also, the EMUI 8 update may come to Honor 8 soon, but apparently it won’t be based on Android 8.0 Oreo. Honor Germany has reportedly said that it “will have ‘a surprise’ in this regard [Oreo for Honor 8] in the near future”. An earlier report had also mentioned that the company will provide the Android Oreo experience on Honor 8 by porting its EMUI 8.0 skin.

Meanwhile, Huawei has been teasing a lot of new features for its Honor smartphones. Last month, the company put out a video teasing its next-gen technology for fast charging. The new technology is claimed to charge smartphone batteries 10 times faster than conventional batteries. As per the setup shown in the video, Huawei said smartphones will get charged in just a few minutes.

HTC 10 Starts Receiving Android 8.0 Oreo Update

HTC 10 has started receiving its Android 8.0 Oreo update. The new update is rolling out in batches as an over-the-air (OTA) package for unlocked units of the HTC 10. The Taiwanese company promised the release of the latest Android version for its 2016 flagship back in August alongside confirming the same experience for the HTC U11 and HTC U Ultra.

As spotted by folks at AndroidPolice, the Android Oreo update for the HTC 10 brings the software version 3.16.617.2. It includes Android 8.0 Oreo along with default features such as Instant Apps, new Quick Settings menu, Notification dots, Picture in Picture (PiP) mode, and Smart Autofill, among various others. The update is also expected to include the latest Android security patch.

The update can be expected to be made available in phases for all HTC 10 units. You can check its availability by going to Settings > About > Software updates. Or else, you can manually install the update by downloading the 1.8GB RUU package that is available on the official HTC site. The manual process will wipe the data on your device. Therefore, it is recommended to back up the data locally before beginning with the RUU.

Launched in April 2016, the HTC 10 was originally running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It got an update to Android 7.0 Nougat in February last year that was debuted in 1.21GB size.

Importantly, the HTC 10 is not the only HTC smartphone to receive the official Android Oreo treatment. The company released the Oreo update for the HTC U11 in last November to upgrade the user experience on its flagship. The update brought the addition of VoWifi service that is initially available to Chunghwa Telecom subscribers in Taiwan. Further, it includes the November Android security patch.

Nokia 8 Android 8.0 Oreo Update Starts Rolling Out

Nokia 8 Android 8.0 Oreo update is now rolling out, bringing the latest version of Google’s mobile OS to HMD Global’s flagship-class smartphone. Released in India on Friday night, the release of the Android Oreo update for Nokia 8 was announced by Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer at HMD Global, in a tweet on Friday. Of course, the Android 8.0 Oreo beta build for Nokia 8 was released last month, but users needed to sign up to become a beta tester for that.  The update wighs 1518.1MB in size and includes the November Android security update as well.

All other Nokia Android smartphones from HMD Global will also receive their Android 8.0 Oreo updates in the near future, namely, the Nokia 2, Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6. In fact, they should all also get their Android P update, as promised by HMD Global last month.

The Nokia 2 is the latest smartphone from HMD Global, and it went on sale in India on Friday. It is also the cheapest smartphone from the company, sporting a price tag of Rs. 6,999 (recommended best buy price).

As for the Nokia 8, the smartphone was unveiled globally back in August, and then launched in India in September, before going on sale in October. The dual-SIM (Nano) Nokia 8 bears a 5.3-inch QHD (1440×2560 pixels) IPS display with 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The smartphone is IP54 rated, which makes it splash proof. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC (4 Kryo cores clocked at 2.5GHz and 4 Kryo cores clocked at 1.8GHz) coupled with 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM.

The dual rear camera setup on the Nokia 8 includes two 13-megapixel sensors – one is an RGB sensor and features optical image stabilisation (OIS), while the other is a monochrome sensor. Both have an aperture of f/2.0, 1.12-micron pixel elements, phase detection autofocus, a 76.9-degree wide-angle lens, phase detection autofocus (PDAF), dual-tone LED flash, and an IR range finder.

On the front, the Nokia 8 bears another 13-megapixel sensor with PDAF, 1.12-micron pixels, an f/2.0 aperture, and an 78.4-degree wide-angle lens. All three cameras come with Carl Zeiss optics. The company is touting the ‘bothies’ feature with the smartphone, allowing users to take photos or videos using the front and rear cameras simultaneously. The Nokia 8 is also optimised for one-touch live-streaming via Facebook Live and YouTube Live. Also on board is OZO Audio tech for spatial 360-degree audio recording (using 3 microphones), including an Audio Focus mode.

The Nokia 8 comes with 64GB of inbuilt UFS2.1 storage, expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB) in a hybrid dual-SIM configuration. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, USB Type-C (v3.1), and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Sensors on board include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, digital compass, gyroscope, and a proximity sensor. Bearing a 3090mAh non-removable battery, the Nokia 8 measures 151.5×73.7×7.9mm.

Android 8.0 Oreo OTA Update Files Now Available for Nexus, Pixel Devices

Google is finally making the OTA files for Android 8.0 Oreo available for compatible Nexus and all Pixel devices. The company launched Android 8.0 Oreo last week, and at the time, factory images only meant for developers were made available apart from OTA updates for those in the Android beta program. Now, it has listing the Nexus and Pixel factory images on their respective pages, and made the OTA update files also available for side-loading.

Notably, Google has made some changes to the naming scheme of the Oreo builds. Pixel and Pixel XLusers will see build OPR6.170623.012 while Pixel C has OPR6.170623.010 as build number. The Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X has OPR6.170623.013 build number. As we mentioned, last week, apart from the OTA updates that were rolled out to Android Beta devices, these system images were also made available for those who could not wait, listed as developer builds.

For those unaware, Google’s latest mobile operating system update aims to improve security while adds new features. Some of the popular Android 8.0 Oreo features listed by Google include faster boot times, Notification dots, auto fill and smart text selection, redesigned Settings, revamped Google Now, and Picture in Picture mode among others.

Google has already made Android O update available for Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones along with the Pixel C tablet from 2015. The latest version is being rolled out as OTA update in a phased manner. Since Android Oreo announcement, several handset makers have already announced update timelines for their respective devices.

Now that everyone knows that Android 8.0 will go by the name of Oreo, we can look forward for the update, which will be a gradual and slow process for a majority of Android users out there. But Pixel and Nexus users who have managed to hop on to the latest update are now reporting the first set of bugs. After installing the final version of Android 8.0, some users have reported facing Bluetooth issues, and Google is asking for feedback to address the matter.

Pixel and Nexus users on the latest OTA update have been asked by Google for additional information via the above-linked individual forums. The Search giant has divided Bluetooth-related issues into three main parts – Car/ Auto, Headphones, and Bluetooth Speakers – under which users are to provide specific details of the products that are facing connectivity issues.

Bluetooth-related issues with Android are getting fairly common now. A similar situation was faced by users last year when Google rolled out Android 7.1.1 Nougat that caused in-car Bluetooth connectivity issues. Google managed to quickly solve the bug, and will likely get the kinks sorted for Android 8.0 soon as well.

Users have largely complained about issues faced when pairing with Android Auto such as media content not displaying correctly, or it shows as paired but no audio plays, or frequent stuttering while music is playing, to name a few. Other issues related to headphones include audio cuts every 5-20 seconds and “skipping or clipping sounds like scratched CD.”

Google will likely roll out a fix for the issues once it gets as much information as it can and before Android 8.0 rolls out to other smartphones such as the Lenovo K8 Note, HTC U11, OnePlus 5, to name a few.
