Social media is not always the bad negative place that we know it as. Sometimes, it can also be the knight in shining armour for someone in distress.

This story about a man who lost his necklace at an airprot will regain your trust in social media. Nikesh Shukla, who is an author, recently lost his necklace, which contained some of his mother’s ashes at the Heathrow airport. In the hope of getting back his necklace, Nikesh took to Twitter to ask for help in finding it.

He tweeted saying, “Hi. I lost the necklace shown in my profile pic today at Heathrow airport terminal 2. It contains some of my mum’s ashes and is extremely dear to me. Any chance of a RT in the slim hope it’s found?”

The Mi A2 price in India is Rs. 16,999 and the smartphone has 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage; there is also a 6GB RAM and 128GB built-in storage but it is not up for grabs yet. It will come with 3-month subscription to Hungama Music and will come with cashback worth Rs. 2,200 and 4.5TB complimentary data from Jio. Amazon customers will get 5 percent instant discount on HDFC Bank credit cards and no-cost EMIs on HDFC Bank debit and credit cards. As for the Redmi 5A price in India, buyers will have to shell out Rs. 5,999 and Rs. 6,999 for the 2GB RAM and 3GB RAM variants, respectively. There is Rs. 2,200 cashback from Jio and free Hungama Music access for 3 months.

The dual-SIM (Nano) Xiaomi Mi A2 runs stock Android 8.1 Oreo, and being a part of the Android One programme from Google, is certified to offer an optimised Android experience and timely updates. The smartphone sports a 5.99-inch full-HD+ (1080×2160 pixels) display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 660 SoC (four cores clocked at 2.2GHz and four cores clocked at 1.8GHz) coupled with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM.

Xiaomi Mi A2 sports a dual rear camera setup, with a 12-megapixel Sony IMX486 sensor in the primary camera, featuring 1.25-micron pixels with an f/1.75 aperture. It uses a 20-megapixel IMX376 sensor as the secondary rear camera. The rear camera setup also features a flash module. On the front, the Mi A2 bears the same 20-megapixel sensor, complete with a soft-light flash module. As we mentioned, the Xiaomi Mi A2 comes in two inbuilt storage options – 64GB and 128GB – depending on the variant purchased.

Connectivity options on the Mi A2 include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac (dual-band, 2.4GHz and 5GHz), Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, and a USB Type-C (v2.0) port – there is no 3.5mm headphone jack on the phone. It bears a fingerprint sensor on the rear panel, while other sensors on board include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, gyroscope, and proximity sensor. The Xiaomi Mi A2 sports a 3,000mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 4.0.

As for specifications, the budget dual-SIM (Nano) Redmi 5A runs MIUI 9 on top of Android Nougat. It sports a 5-inch HD (720×1280 pixels) display, and is powered by the Snapdragon 425 SoC, paired with 2GB and 3GB RAM options. The Redmi 5A has 16GB and 32GB of onboard storage options that both are expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB) via a dedicated slot.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5A smartphone has a 13-megapixel sensor at the back – along with an f/2.2 aperture, PDAF, and an LED flash. On the front, there is a 5-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture. In terms of connectivity, the handset has 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.1, GPS/ A-GPS, Infrared, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a Micro-USB port. Sensors on board include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, and a proximity sensor. Lastly, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A packs a 3,000mAh battery and measures 140.4×70.1×8.35mm.

BlackBerry Evolve and Evolve X are expected to focus on smartphone security

BlackBerry Evolve and Evolve X smartphones are expected to launch today at an event brand licensee Optiemus is hosting in New Delhi. The BlackBerry Evolve series India launch event is scheduled for 11am IST. It is rumoured that the Evolve and Evolve X will be the rebranded versions of the BlackBerry Ghost and BlackBerry Ghost Pro, respectively. The launch invite emphasises that the smartphones will focus on security, which is considered the forte of BlackBerry. It is likely the smartphones will come with the company’s DTEK security software onboard.

The BlackBerry Evolve and Evolve X smartphones come to India just weeks after the launch of the Key2smartphone in the country. A teaser by the company released just a day ago shows dual rear cameras and fingerprint sensor on the back. The two will reportedly feature 4,000mAh battery and touchscreen displays, with no QWERTY keyboard below the touch panel. The teaser video released yesterday also showed a USB Type C port and no 3.5mm headphone jack.

Not all specifications of the two smartphones have been leaked as of now, so there’s not a complete picture of the duo. The US House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on Tuesday to take testimony from Facebook, Alphabet’s YouTube unit and Twitter on whether social media companies are filtering content for political reasons, the committee chairman said.

Conservative Republicans in Congress have criticized social media companies for what they claim are politically motivated practices in removing some content, a charge the companies have rejected.

House Judiciary Committee chairman Bob Goodlatte said in a statement on Friday that he was pleased the companies will send experts “to answer questions on their content moderation practices and how they can be better stewards of free speech in the United States and abroad.”

Twitter declined to comment. Facebook on Friday confirmed they would participate but declined further comment. Alphabet did not immediately comment.

Facebook’s head of global policy management Monika Bickert, Youtube global head of public policy and government relations Juniper Downs and Twitter’s senior strategist Nick Pickles will testify, the committee said.

The committee held a hearing in April on the same topic after representatives of the companies skipped it.

Republicans repeatedly suggested at the hearing that the companies are censoring or blocking content from conservatives, a charge the companies rejected.

Lawmakers from both parties agreed tech companies must remove illegal content like fraud, piracy and sex trafficking but differed on whether they should remove objectionable content.

Goodlatte said, “while these companies may have legal, economic, and ideological reasons to manage their content like a traditional media outlet, we must nevertheless weigh as a nation whether the standards they apply endanger our free and open society and its culture of freedom of expression.”

Representative Jerrold Nadler, top Democrat on the committee, said in April “the notion that social media companies are filtering out conservative voices is a hoax, a tired narrative of imagined victimhood.”

Nadler added, “conservative commentary, including conspiracy theories of a conservative bent, regularly rank among the most far-reaching posts on Facebook and elsewhere.”

Berin Szoka, president of TechFreedom, said at the hearing that “concerns about Facebook’s potential slant are best addressed through other measures, starting with transparency and user empowerment. Ultimately, the best check on Facebook’s power today is the threat of a new Facebook disrupting the company’s dominance.”

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg told Congress in April that he is “very committed to making sure that Facebook is a platform for all ideas.”

New Delhi, Jun 10 (PTI) Foreign tourists may soon get to claim GST refunds at airports at the time of exit as the revenue department is working on a mechanism to refund taxes paid by them on local purchases.

Initially, only purchases made by tourists from big retailers would be eligible for Goods and Services Tax (GST) refunds at the airports when the tourist is leaving the country, an official said.

In several countries VAT or GST are refunded to the tourists for purchases made beyond a prescribed threshold.

The department is working out a mechanism which will ensure refund of GST to foreign tourists and for that the field offices have to be sensitised, the official said.

“It has to be ensured that refunds are not claimed on the basis of fake invoices. The refund mechanism could start on the basis of invoices issued by big retailers,” the official told PTI.

A provision for GST refund to tourists have been made in the GST law, but it is yet to be operational.

The law has defined the term tourist as a person not normally resident in India, who enters India for a stay of not more than six months for legitimate non-immigrant purposes.

AMRG & Associates Partner Rajat Mohan said tourist refund claims are a great inbound tourism marketing technique with a low cost to the exchequer.

“Internationally, countries like Singapore and Australia have an online robust system connecting multiple refund agencies and retailers on a single platform, offering tourists a seamless and hassle-free experience while verifying, processing and disbursing the tax refunds. Matching such state-of-the-art systems could be a technological nightmare for Indian counterparts,” Mohan said.

Countries like Australia, Germany, France, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, United Kingdom and Switzerland offer VAT or GST refund to international tourists subject to certain conditions. These countries also have a threshold of the minimum amount spent for availing these tax refund advantage.

In Australia, to avail the tax benefit the minimum spend should be 300 Australian dollars (around Rs 15,000). Also, the goods have to be purchased from a single business with same Australian business number.

In case of Singapore, the norms are more relaxed and the minimum purchase amount fixed is SGD 100 (around Rs 5,000), while for Japan and Switzerland the threshold has been fixed at 5,401 yen (around Rs 3,000) and 300 Swiss francs (around Rs 20,000), respectively. PTI JD MKJ

Amazon and Google accounted for 70 percent share of the global smart speaker shipments in the first quarter of 2018, with Apple selling 600,000 HomePods in the period, a new report said on Friday.

According to market research firm Strategy Analytics, global smart speaker shipments reached 9.2 million units in the first quarter.

With 43.6 percent market share, Amazon shipped an impressive four million smart speakers during the quarter though its global market share nearly halved from the same period in 2017.

Google (26.5 percent market share with 2.4 million sales) and Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba (7.6 percent market share) consolidated their number two and three rankings, while Apple with six percent share became the fourth largest smart speaker brand worldwide.

“Amazon and Google accounted for a dominant 70 percent share of global smart speaker shipments in Q1 2018 although their combined share has fallen from 84 percent in Q4 2017 and 94 percent in the year ago quarter,” said David Watkins, Director at Strategy Analytics.

This is partly as a result of strong growth in the Chinese market for smart speakers where both Amazon and Google are currently absent.

“Alibaba and Xiaomi are leading the way in China and their strength in the domestic market alone is proving enough to propel them into the global top five,” he added.

Today’s smart speakers are by no means the finished article but they have captured the consumer imagination.

“We are clearly heading towards a time in the not too distant future when voice becomes a standard mode of technology interaction alongside established approaches like keyboard, mouse and touchscreen,” Watkins said.

Reliance Jio this week announced that the telecom giant would be deploying pre-5G/ 4G advanced Massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) at Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium and Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla stadium to offer high speed Internet access to users during the entirety of the latest edition of Indian Premier League (IPL). IPL 2018 will be held from April 7-May 27. According to Jio’s press note, both stadiums will get connected with an array of massive MIMO, 4G eNodeBs, and several Wi-Fi cells to create a wide-ranging network.

As per Jio’s claim, massive MIMO offers five times the capacity of a 30MHz wide band spectrum in high density areas, a la cricket stadiums during IPL.

“Jio being the fastest growing network in the world has to offer a seamless experience to our customers and this advanced pre-5G will enable high capacity network with enhanced digital experience at the IPL match venues,” says Reliance Jio in a statement.

Accordingly, rival Airtel also announced on Friday that it would be deploying similar ‘Massive MIMO’ pre-5G technology starting with the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. This is where the inaugural match of IPL 2018 will commence on April 7. Further, Airtel also stated that the technology would soon be deployed at several other IPL match venues in Jaipur, Bengaluru, Mohali, Indore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Delhi, and Mumbai.

Separately, Jio had recently launched its latest Rs. 251 prepaid pack that has been targeted towards fans of the IPL 2018. The pack offers a total of 102 GB 4G data (2GB per day) with a validity of 51 days, which is the duration of this year’s Indian Premier League. Do note that the unused data will expire at midnight every day. It also offers unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS messages per day.

OnePlus 6 is the next big smartphone coming our way, with the launch confirmed to be in second quarter, though the official unveiling may be as early as April-end. However, it seems the OnePlus 6 won’t be the only product the company will showcase at the event, as it is apparently working on a paid of wireless earphones as well, named OnePlus Bullets Wireless. This new development is likely to sit alongside the OnePlus Bullets (V2) that were launched in August 2016. OnePlus 6 has been confirmed to come with a notch design and Snapdragon 845 SoC, and will have a 256GB storage variant.

As per a Bluetooth certification listing, the new OnePlus Bullets Wireless earphones are based on Bluetooth v4.1 and include a Qualcomm chip. The earphones carry model number BT31B and are listed since April 4, suggesting them as a part of the ongoing developments by the Chinese company. Moreover, the fresh listing suggests that the company may announce the new product alongside launching the OnePlus 6. Folks at Nashville Chatter spotted the listing soon after it became live.

The prime use case of wireless earphones is certainly to give a wire-free music playback experience to users. However, companies including Apple and Google recently brought there in-house wireless earphones in the form of AirPods and Pixel Buds, respectively, to give users an advanced alternative to traditional wired headsets. Both companies specifically also preferred to ditch the 3.5mm audio jack from their smartphone models. This again makes some sense for launching native wireless earphones. Having said that, OnePlus has confirmed the OnePlus 6 will retain the 3.5mm headphone jack. Thus, the company may be looking to provide an official wireless headphone alternative to its users.

In the past, OnePlus brought its Bullet series earphones at affordable prices – as low as $20 in the US (approximately Rs. 1,300) for the OnePlus Bullets V2. This suggests that the new wireless earphones will also be a pocket-friendly offering. We can also presume that the new earphones will work with Google Assistant and come with premium drivers.

It is unclear that when OnePlus will launch its Bullets Wireless earphones. However, the OnePlus 6 is likely to be launched sometime around the release of the Avengers: Infinity War movie that is set in India for April 27.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ went on sale for the first time in India on Friday. While the handsets are available across various channels, Airtel has also introduced the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones on its online store with down payment options along with bundled monthly plans. After Samsung unveiled its latest flagship smartphones at MWC 2018 last month, Airtel had opened pre-registrations for the handsets on its online store. Now, Airtel is offering customers the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ with down payment options starting at Rs. 9,999 under the new plan. On top of the down payment, Airtel requires customers to subscribe to its postpaid plans for 24 months to get their hands on the handsets.

Under the Airtel offer, the Samsung Galaxy S9 (64GB variant) is available on the online store at a down payment of Rs. 9,900 and 24 monthly instalments of Rs. 2,499. The Galaxy S9+ (64GB variant) is also available with a down payment of Rs. 9,900 but the buyer has to go for 24 monthly instalments of Rs. 2,799. To note, the monthly instalments comes with a postpaid plan that offers 80GB data (with rollover), unlimited calling, subscription to one-year of Amazon Prime membership, Airtel Secure, Airtel TV, and Wynk Music.

Similarly, the Galaxy S9 (256GB variant) is available on the Airtel online store at a down payment of Rs. 17,900 and 24 monthly instalments of Rs. 2,499. Further, The Galaxy S9+ (256GB variant) is available with a down payment of Rs. 17,900 and 24 monthly instalments of Rs. 2,799.

The Airtel Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ offer is open to both postpaid and prepaid subscribers, however, prepaid subscribers will need to “get a new Postpaid connection or shift their current Airtel Prepaid connection to Postpaid,” the terms and conditions specify.

Airtel is also offering a free handset protection plan with the purchase of Samsung Galaxy S9 series. It is worth noting that Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are also available to buy via Flipkart, Samsung Shop, and retail outlets in India.
