OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T Oxygen OS Open Beta Updates Bring Many Bug Fixes

OnePlus has rolled out the Oxygen OS Open Beta version 18 and version 9 for OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T users, respectively. The update focuses on improving the OnePlus Community app, and brings many bug fixes.

With this update, the OnePlus Community app’s beta version has been bumped up to version 1.9 for OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T users. Other fixes include issues regarding duplicate notifications, duplicate stitches on expanded screenshots, and issues with the app locker. These open beta versions also fix inaccurate battery percentage issues, and display problems with the OnePlus font. It also fixed certain display issues in the weather app, and issues with the opening of the camera app. The update also claims to have fixed an issue that arose while sending files with third party apps via hotspot, and it also fixed inaccurate displayed network speed when activating hotspot.

If you want to run these latest open betas, follow the flashing instructions mentioned here for both the smartphones. Once you migrate to the beta path, you will continue to receive open beta OTAs in the future, and will no longer receive the regular official stable OTAs. Moving back to the official OTA path from the beta path will require a full install and clean flash.

OnePlus is also set to launch the OnePlus 5 this week, and the device will be an Amazon exclusive. It will sport a Snapdragon 835 processor, a dual camera setup, and come in a black colour variant at least. The price of the smartphone is tipped to be starting at Rs. 32,999, and it is expected to go on sale in limited quantity on the same day.

Internet Archive's Wayback Machine Adds Keyword Search as a Beta Feature

It can be hard to find sites that have disappeared from the Internet. But the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine is on the verge of rolling out a feature that will make tracking down dead websites much easier, according to Internet Archive founder Brewster Kahle.

The Wayback Machine has been helping people see past Internet sites over the past 15 years, but searchers always needed to know the URL of a website to find the archived copies. Soon, however, you’ll be able to use keyword searches to find old websites – in fact, you can already test it out through a public beta.

The new search feature is not quite like Google, where all the text on each page on a website is indexed to help with searches. The Wayback Machine feature lets you search for an archived website’s main page, although it does not have the capacity to enable searches for specific webpages on that site. But once you’re there, you’re able to navigate around the old websites.

But the feature is still a big step in terms of usability. Kahle said that he, too, has struggled with the lack of keyword search availability in the Wayback Machine. “I use the Wayback Machine mostly by going to Google, finding a URL and then going to the Wayback to find previous versions of it,” said. “But what if the site is completely gone?”

The ever-changing online ecosystem is partly to blame for all of that hoop jumping: The Internet’s history is filled with the digital corpses of entire sites that are hard, if not impossible, to find through Google.

Take Geocities. It was once a hugely popular hosting service that was acquired by Yahoo but is now defunct everywhere except Japan. Today, the first Google search result for “geocities” is a Wikipedia page about the service, followed by stories about its demise, but not the actual geocities.com URL, which currently redirects to a page about Yahoo services for small businesses.

But if you search for “geocities” in the test version of the Wayback Machine, the first result is geocities.com. That result shows the tool captured over 200 million copies of some 37 million pages that were once hosted on the domain.

And that’s the real power of the Wayback Machine’s new search: It makes it easier for us to see how the Web used to look.

Dropbox Paper Enters Open Beta; Android and iOS Apps Launched

Dropbox Paper, the online tool to collaboratively create and edit documents, has moved from its private beta phase to a public beta and the company has also announced that it is launching the app for its service on both Android and iOS.

The company said on its blog that Dropbox Paper was created with the intention of being a tool to create collaborative documents and share important information with team members. There have been over a million documents that are already created during Dropbox Paper’s private beta and the company has used the feedback to improve certain components of its service.

“With that input (feedback), we’ve made improvements like enhanced tables and image galleries; desktop, Web, and mobile notifications; and powerful search to help you quickly find the docs you need,” the company said in its blog.

With the new mobile apps, users will be able to get project updates, make edits, and respond to feedback even when they are on the move, the company added.

Apart from just plain words, Dropbox Paper also allows you to communicate with the rest of your team by embedding images, videos, and other media. If you connect your Google Calendar with Paper, it can create a custom notes document for your next meeting and automatically share it with the attendees.

The Dropbox Paper app is already available for Android users worldwide, but is available only the in US right now on iOS. Users from the European Union will get access to the iOS app soon, the company said in its blog.

New WhatsApp beta update for Android allows users to download single sticker

WhatsApp is having a busy 2019. It has been adding new features every other day and now with the new beta release the Facebook-owned company has added another nifty feature. The WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.19.33 gives the messenger app the ability to download a single sticker from a pack. Earlier, there was no option to download a single sticker and the users had to download the whole pack even if they wanted only one sticker from the pack. The beta testers for the WhatsApp can check this new feature before it is made available for everyone.

In case you are a beta tester, you can update your WhatsApp Messenger to the new Android beta version 2.19.33. After downloading the update, open the in-app WhatsApp Stickers Store and long press on a sticker in a stickers pack you have not downloaded yet. WhatsApp will then prompt to ask if you want to save that sticker as favourite. It will show you the download size of the single sticker and offer a download option at the bottom for saving the sticker in the app.

First spotted by WhatsApp beta news tracker WABetaInfo, the ability to download just one sticker is very useful. First of all it will save your phone’s space and will make your sticker menu uncluttered. It will be nice to have the relevant stickers at your disposal. It also saves valuable internet data for all the limited pack users.

WABetaInfo also said that the Android 2.19.33 beta update also indicates that WhatsApp plans to introduce its WhatsApp Pay feature in some more countries like Mexico and USA. It also added that the new features about private sharing in groups and improvements for stories would also be introduced soon.

Earlier in February 2018, WhatsApp had introduced WhatsApp Payments in India for both Android and iOS apps. However, the Payments feature got stuck in the regulatory hurdles and has not taken off yet.

Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 Starts Receiving Android 9 Pie Beta Update in India

Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 is now receiving the Android 9 Pie beta update in India, revealed the Taiwanese company on Saturday. The update, which is now available to the beta programme participants, is notable only recommended to the users, who know what they are doing and have experience dealing with the pre-release software. Unlike the stable update, which will be released by Asus on a later date, the beta version of the Android 9 Pie update is likely to include bugs and other issues since it is still in testing. The company is hoping to get feedback from the actual users of the phone before rolling out the final version for everyone.

“ASUS unveils the Beta Power User Program giving access to early updates for feedback and testing so that the official Android Pie update is served as delicious and stable,” the company said in a statement.

The Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 owners, who are interested in trying the update, can head over to the company’s website for the beta programme. The company says the interested users of the phone should be willing to share their phone’s IMEI information, serial number, and current firmware details to be eligible for participation in the Beta Power User Program. The news of the Android Pie beta for Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 comes just days after the Taiwanese company had released a stable software update for the phone, which included the January security patch and advanced AI-scene detection. The same update was also rolled out to the Asus ZenFone Max M2 phone.

Nokia 8 gets Android Pie beta, complete with the new gesture navigation

The Nokia 8 was supposed to be updated to Android 9 Pie in November, but there was an unforeseen delay. It’s getting closer, though, and HMD can use your help with the final touches – it released a beta version of the update.

You need to join Nokia Beta Labs if you want to participate. And make sure to back up your data first, since although rolling back to 8.1 Oreo is possible, it wipes the storage.

Pie-style navigation gestures are enabled, but those don’t mix well with the hardware buttons below the screen – it makes the smallish screen seem even smaller.

Android 9 Pie beta is now out for the Nokia 6.1 Plus

Today Nokia has made the first beta of Android 9 Pie available for the 6.1 Plus. This has been officially announced on Twitter by Juho Sarvikas, HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer.

If you want to give it a try, you’ll need to head to Nokia Beta Labs and grab the update from there. Obviously since this is a beta you should expect to see bugs, things may not run very smoothly at this stage. So it usually isn’t advisable to install such a release on your main phone, but in the end it all depends on how patient you are and how much of a tolerance to issues you have.

Either way, the finalized Android 9 Pie update for the Nokia 6.1 Plus should be out in a few weeks, and become available to all of the units ever sold.

Nokia 2 Android 8.1 Oreo Beta Update Now Available, Announces HMD Global

HMD Global, the licensee the Nokia mobile brand, back in May 2018 at its product launch event promised an Android 8.1 Oreo update for its affordable Nokia 2 handset. Now, the Finnish phone maker has fulfilled its promise and the latest version of Android Oreo is now available for the Nokia 2 as part of the Nokia Beta Labs. With this update, the Nokia 2 becomes the last one in the current lineup to run Android 8.1 Oreo software, albeit, still in beta.

Juho Sarvikas, HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer, took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce that the Nokia 2 would be getting the Oreo update as part of the beta programme that the company runs. This development comes after HMD’s promise to bring this update to the phone. At the same event, the manufacturer had also stated that all Nokia phones launched till date would eventually receive the Android P update, with the Nokia 1 and Nokia 2.1 getting the relevant upgrade to the current Android Oreo (Go edition). Notably, Android P Beta is currently available for the Nokia 7 Plus.

Nokia 2 specifications

Launched in October of last year, the Nokia 2 is a fairly budget-oriented handset with entry-level specifications. It sports a 5-inch LTPS HD (720×1280 pixels) display with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The handset is powered by the modest quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 SoC, along with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. There is an 8-megapixel camera sensor at the back, and a 5-megapixel sensor on the front for selfies and video calls. A 4000mAh battery powers the internals from underneath the hood, said to provide a 2-day battery life.

The Nokia 2 measures 143.5×71.3×9.3mm, and is IP52-rated (for drip protection). It comes in three colour options – Pewter Black with black face and frame, Pewter White with white face, black frame, and Copper, with black face, black back, and copper frame.
