IRCTC Offers Rs. 50 Cashback on Tickets Bought Using New mVisa Payment Method

Rail travellers using IRCTC can now book train tickets by mVisa payment method that allows them to scan a QR code and pay through smartphones. Users can securely link their visa debit, credit, or prepaid account to the mVisa application on their smartphones and make their travel bookings by simply scanning their mVisa QR code on the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website.

IRCTC, a subsidiary of the Indian Railways, is offering a promotion offer until September 4 that will give Rs. 50 cashback to consumers booking their tickets through mVisa scan and pay on the IRCTC website.

“The key to our success as India’s largest e-commerce organisation has been our ability to embrace new technologies that help us drive consumer engagement across our platform,” IRCTC CMD AK Manocha said on Tuesday. “Considering the phenomenal penetration of smartphones in India, moving to a mobile based payment solution such as mVisa was thus a natural choice for IRCTC,” he added.
The mVisa payment solution on IRCTC can potentially empower millions of consumers spread across Indian cities, towns and villages, to make payments using just their smartphones from the comfort of their homes.

India is currently one of the major smartphone markets in the world, with over a billion smartphones expected to be sold in the next five years. The increasing popularity and adoption of mobile devices presents a huge opportunity for the growth of mobile-based digital commerce.

Cashback, Awards of Rs. 340 Crores by Government on Digital Payments

To give a big push to cashless transactions, the government Thursday announced daily, weekly and mega awards worth Rs. 340 crores for consumers and merchants on small digital payments beginning Christmas Day.

Announcing ‘Lucky Grahak Yojana’ and ‘Digi-Dhan Vyapar Yojana’, to be launched on December 25 as a “Christmas gift” to the nation, Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said it is specially focussed on bringing the poor, lower middle class and small businesses into the digital payment fold.

The schemes will cover small transactions between Rs. 50 and Rs. 3,000 to encourage every section of the society to move to digital payments.

“The primary aim of these schemes is to incentivise digital transactions so that electronic payments are adopted by all sections of the society, especially the poor and the middle class,” Kant said.

He said the estimated expenditure of the first phase of the scheme (up to April 14) is Rs. 340 crores and going forward the government will announce a slew of other measures to move towards a less-cash economy.

Both the schemes will be supervised by National Payments Corporation of India (NCPI) and it will also conduct a technical audit of schemes at back-end operations.

Under the Lucky Grahak Yojana for consumers, there will be daily reward of Rs. 1,000 each in a cashback mode to 15,000 lucky winners for a period of 100 days from December 25 till April 13.

Besides, there will be weekly prizes of Rs. 1 lakh, Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 5,000 for consumers using digital payment mode.

For merchant scheme ‘Digi-Dhan Vyapar Yojana’, there will be weekly prizes worth Rs. 50,000, Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 2,500 to be announced during the period.

There will be 7,000 weekly awards each for consumers and merchants. The scheme will end on B R Ambedkar’s birth anniversary on April 14, with mega prize announcements for consumers of Rs. 1 crore, Rs. 50 lakh and Rs. 25 lakh for doing transactions digitally between November 8 to April 13.

Likewise, for merchants, the mega prize comprises Rs. 50 lakh, Rs. 25 lakh and Rs. 12 lakh awards.

Kant said only 5 percent of personal transactions in India are done through digital channels, meaning 95 percent is done on cash which is giving rise to a very large informal economy, limiting state’s ability to levy and raise tax base.

Detailing digital transactions post demonetisation of old Rs. 500/1000 notes, he said PoS transactions witnessed a jump of 95 percent since November 8 (till December 7).

RuPay Card transactions were up 316 percent and e-wallet 271 percent, while both UPI about and USSD witnessed increase of about 1,200 percent each.

All forms of transactions through UPI, USSD, Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS) and RuPay cards will be eligible for lucky draws.

Niti Aayog also said the scheme is not applicable for transactions done through private credit cards and e-wallets of private companies.

Kant said the government has taken a host of measures in last two-and-a-half years to fight corruption and black money and there is a big drive to promote digital payments and a transition to less-cash economy is a strategic manner.

Jio and Samsung India have partnered to introduce exclusive offers on the purchase of two Samsung Galaxy devices, the Galaxy J2 (2018) and Galaxy J7 Duo, bundling them with cashbacks and other benefits for Jio users. As part of the scheme, Jio subscribers buying the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) can avail instant cashback vouchers up to Rs. 2,750 (55 cashback vouchers worth Rs. 50 each) along with 100GB additional 4G data (10 vouchers for 10GB additional data each) benefit. The offer is valid till September 30, 2018, and users will be able to avail the cashbacks and benefits with the Rs. 198 and Rs. 299 prepaid plans.

Similarly, Jio subscribers buying the Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo can avail instant cashback vouchers up to Rs. 2,750 (55 cashback vouchers worth Rs. 50 each), and double data for a maximum of four recharges. Once again, the offer is valid till September 30, 2018. Cashbacks are applicable on for Rs. 198 or Rs. 299 prepaid plans, while double data is valid on prepaid plans of Rs. 198 or above.

To recall, the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2018) was launched in India back in April, and came with pretty much the same launch offers. It appears the partnership has been extended for a longer time – up till September in this case. The Galaxy J2 (2018)’s highlight feature is the preloaded Samsung Mall app that is claimed to use artificial intelligence (AI) to let users shop online by clicking a picture of their desired product. A ‘Device Maintenance’ feature is also present to optimise the smartphone’s performance. Similarly, there is a storage-saving proprietary ‘Move to Memory Card’ feature that automatically directs content from social media apps to the external memory card.

The Samsung Galaxy J2 Duo was also launched in April, but didn’t come with any launch offers – meaning the Reliance Jio cashbacks and data benefits are now a selling point for the smartphone. Highlights of the Galaxy J2 Duo include an App Pair feature, Bixby Home, and a dual rear camera setup.

Airtel Offers Cashback Worth Rs. 1,500 on Select Samsung 4G Smartphones

Airtel on Thursday partnered with Samsung to announce cashback on select Samsung 4G smartphones in India. The offer entails a maximum cashback of Rs. 1,500 on the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2017), Galaxy J5 Prime, Galaxy J7 Prime, and Galaxy J7 Pro. The offer will be available in India starting Sunday, January 7, 2018. The purchase can be made from any Samsung retailer and recharges can be done from any Airtel retailer. Vodafone on Thursday also launched a similar offer for other Samsung 4G smartphones.

As we mentioned, a new cashback offer has been announced under Airtel’s ‘Mera Pehla Smartphone’ initiative. This offer entitles users to a maximum of Rs. 1,500 cashback on purchase of any of the above mentioned smartphones. The Rs. 1,500 cashback will be provided to the customers over a period of 24 months. Users who have completed recharges of over Rs. 2,500 in the first 12 months will be issued the first instalment of Rs. 300. The second instalment of Rs. 1,200 will be provided after the user completes a minimum recharge of Rs. 2,500 over the next 12 months. The cashback will be credited to the subscriber’s Airtel Payments Bank account.

Airtel is also bundling the special Rs. 199 pack to users. This pack offers 1GB data per day, unlimited voice calls, and 100 SMSes per day to the user for a validity of 28 days.

With the Airtel cashback, the Samsung Galaxy J2 (2017) will be available at an effective price of Rs. 5,490, down from the Airtel-provided market operating price (MOP) of Rs. 6,990. The Galaxy J5 Prime will be available effectively for Rs. 10,490, down from it MOP of Rs. 11,990. Additionally, the Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime will have an effective price of Rs. 12,400, down from Rs. 13,900 and the Galaxy J7 Pro will be effectively priced at Rs. 18,400 (MOP Rs. 19,900).

Xiaomi Redmi 5A was launched in India on Thursday, with a nice introductory pricing offer for the first five million units sold in the country. The smartphone was launched at a price of Rs. 5,999 for the 2GB RAM/ 16GB storage variant, but at launch the price will be Rs. 4,999 for the first five million buyers. The Redmi 5A will go on sale on Flipkart, Mi.com, and Mi Home offline stores in India on December 7 at 12 pm. There’s another variant of the smartphone, with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, which is priced at Rs. 5,999.

The price of the more expensive variant of the Xiaomi Redmi 5A will remain the same for the foreseeable future as the company has not announced any discounts. While this discount offer is quite straightforward, there’s also a convoluted mess of an offer around if you want one. In this case, it’s Reliance Jio’s “additional Rs. 1,000 cashback” offer for the Xiaomi Redmi 5A. Think we’re being harsh? Just wait until you try to decipher the fine print involved in this latest “effective price” gimmick.

To avail this additional cashback, Redmi 5A users will have to recharge their accounts with the Rs. 199 Jio pack for 12 months. After this, they’ll get 10 vouchers of Rs. 100 each and these can only be redeemed one at a time on a recharge of Rs. 309 or above. See our point now? Sure, there’s some kind of a discount involved here, but it arrives quite late and requires you to use 10 discount vouchers over 10 months, by which point you probably would’ve moved to a different smartphone and probably a different carrier too.

Vodafone announces ‘Rs. 2,200 cashback’ on some Micromax phones
Vodafone India has announced a tie-up with Micromax to offer cashbacks on some budget Micromax 4G smartphones. This offer is valid on the Micromax Bharat 2 Plus, Micromax Bharat 3, Micromax Bharat 4, and Micromax Canvas 1. If you thought the Jio Redmi 5A offer was complicated, prepare to be amazed as Vodafone’s Micromax offer is just as convoluted. To avail this cashback, you will have to make recharges worth Rs. 150 per month for three years. After the first 18 months, you’ll get a cashback of Rs. 900, and after three years, you’ll get a cashback of Rs. 1,300. Both these cashback offers will be credited to your Vodafone M-Pesa wallet. Yes, we weren’t kidding about the complexity of these offers.

Micromax to launch Bharat 5 in India
Micromax doesn’t want to be left behind while Xiaomi launches one budget phone after another. The Indian smartphone maker is going to launch Bharat 5 in the country just a day after the launch of the Xiaomi Redmi 5A. If you go by the invite that the company has sent, you’d suspect that the smartphone has a huge battery, perhaps even 5000mAh and could feature fast charging. Micromax brought its Bharat range of smartphones to counter the surge of other affordable phones in the market, and it appears that Bharat 5 will be the latest effort in that direction.

This new Google app lets you keep data usage in check
Google has launched an app called Datally to help Android users keep an eye on mobile data usage. The app lets you track the data consumed by individual apps and lets you shut down data access for individual apps. It also gives you information on nearby public Wi-Fi networks, with some comments on the quality of these networks. Datally is clearly targeted at developing nations where data limits are small and people’s ability to buy packs with lots of data is limited. Until very recently, this would’ve been very useful in India, but with the arrival of Reliance Jio and the subsequent competition in the Indian telecom market, large data caps have become quite common in the country. That makes Datally less useful, but it’s still a good tool to have, one that makes us wonder why these features aren’t built in on an OS level.

Panasonic Eluga C with ‘bezel-less’ display launched
Large displays with limited bezels have become the smartphone trend of 2017 and now even Panasonic has joined the party. The Panasonic Eluga C features a bezel-less display and a dual camera setup. The phone has been launched in Taiwan at a price of TWD 6,000, which is equivalent to Rs. 12,900. The Panasonic Eluga C features a 5.5-inch display that has ultra-thin bezels and comes with an HD (720×1280 pixels) resolution. The smartphone is powered by an octa-core MediaTek MT6750T SoC clocked at 1.5GHz, coupled with 4GB of RAM. Panasonic has provided 13-megapixel + 5-megapixel camera sensors at the back of the Eluga C and an 8-megapixel camera on the front.

Windows 10 now has 600 million active devices
Windows 10 is now running on 600 million active devices, according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who made the announcement at Microsoft’s annual shareholders meeting, according to a report from GeekWire. The number includes the following devices: desktops, tablets, Xbox One consoles, HoloLens headsets, and Surface Hub devices, apart from Windows 10 Mobile smartphones. Microsoft has admitted that it won’t be able to reach its goal of 1 billion active Windows 10 devices within three years of the operating system’s 2015 launch.

Samsung is the world’s largest smartphone brand: Gartner
Market research firm Gartner has claimed that Samsung took the top spot in smartphone sales globallyin the third quarter of 2017. The company claimed that Samsung has a 22.3 percent market share in the smartphone market across the world, with Apple being a distant second at 11.9 percent and Huawei, with 9.5 percent, being in third place. Gartner added that global smartphone sales stand at 383 million units in the third quarter of 2017. It attributed Samsung’s return to the top to Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Galaxy Note 8 sales.

Apple fixes embarrassing macOS security flaw
Apple has fixed a critical bug in macOS High Sierra, one that could give hackers total control of vulnerable machines. The company has announced that it will review its software development process  to ensure that this kind of a bug doesn’t get shipped to people who use its products. Apple also apologised to all Mac users for this embarrassing bug, which just needed potential hackers to have physical access to vulnerable computer and let them have complete control over the computer without entering a password.

Snapchat unveils redesigned app
Snapchat has revamped its app to focus more on personal content than posts from publishers. The app now separates your feed into separate streams for publishers and your friends. Snapchat relies on algorithms to curate your feed based on your interests. The company has claimed that this change will also help publishers make more money on the platform, which has 178 million daily active users.

Android co-founder takes leave of absence from his new startup
Andy Rubin, a former Google executive who’s best known as the co-founder of Android, has taken a leave of absence from his smartphone startup Essential, according to a statement from the startup. Online news outlet The Information had earlier reported that Rubin left Google in 2014 after an internal inquiry found that he’d entered into a relationship with a subordinate. After this report was published, Rubin went on a leave of absence from Essential, but the startup refused to reveal the length of his absence. Essential said Rubin asked for leave to deal with personal matters.

Google Pixel Now With Rs. 13,000 Cashback but Is It Worth It?

The Google Pixel and Pixel XL are now available in India at a steep price cut via Flipkart and other retailers across the country thanks to a cashback offer. Now, this usually means you get your money back for purchases made via credit or debit cards issued by specific banks. But in a refreshing change, the Pixel and Pixel XL purchases made via cash will also be eligible. What this means is that you get a Rs. 13,000 instant discount on the smartphones.

A prominent retailer told Gadgets 360 that the reason why the phone is getting such a big discount is because there’s a lot of unsold inventory in India – a stark contrast to the US where the phones can’t be found. But are the Google Pixel phones worth buying at the new price, nearly seven months after their release?

 

The Google Pixel and Pixel XL have last year’s tech

At launch the Pixel and Pixel XL were the fastest in their class, toting the then top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC along with integrated Adreno 530 graphics, 4GB of RAM, and either 32GB or 128GB of internal storage. The Pixel XL has a 5.5-inch 1440×2560 pixels display, while the Pixel has a 5-inch panel at 1080×1920 pixels.

Seven months later, Google’s flagship isn’t really flagship material any more. The Samsung Galaxy S8and S8+ (review) both sport far more processing power, and they’re not alone. Xiaomi had launched the Mi 6 with faster, more efficient internals as well, and OnePlus’s new flagship is said to be around the corner as well.

At the same time, flagships from brands like LG and Sony, while also sporting last year’s internals have made some interesting strides in camera tech, with the LG G6 sporting a dual camera setup and the Sony Xperia XZs cramming in a Motion Eye camera system, which essentially shrinks the tech found in cameras such as the Cybershot RX10 III, to fit inside a smartphone.

The Google Pixel and Pixel XL look dated

The newest flagships are moving to sleek bezel-less designs, as we saw at the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+. Google’s own industrial design looked familiar months ago, and it seems plain outdated today. Plus the mix of glass and metal on the back gives it an unfinished, inconsistent feel. All of this results in smartphones that are chunky, and even boring, considering what else is available in the price range today.

 

Even after a Rs. 13,000 price drop, the Google Pixel and Pixel XL are still expensive

Speaking of the price range, the Google Pixel carries a maximum retail price of Rs. 57,000 for the 32GB storage variant; if you want more storage, you’re going to have to put down Rs. 66,000. The Pixel XL Rs. 67,000 and Rs. 76,000, for the 32GB and 128GB models respectively.

The cashback offer means the Google Pixel will be available at an effective starting price of Rs. 44,000, which isn’t too bad. But most flagships with comparable specs have gotten deeper price cuts at the time of writing.

These include the LG G5 (Rs. 31,600), HTC 10 (Rs. 37,600), and the Sony Xperia XZs (Rs. 38,468), while the likes of the OnePlus 3T were cheaper than the Pixel and Pixel XL from launch itself, and continue to be cheaper even now.

Seven months after launch, some of the Google Pixel and Pixel XL’s biggest problems haven’t been fixed

In the smartphone world, seven months is a lifetime. Despite touting a best in class camera, its lens flare issue is yet to be resolved. In addition to this, Bluetooth pairing is still inconsistent and batteries in some units are prone to early shutdown. Don’t expect Google to be supportive either with some suggesting that after sales service, at least in India isn’t quite capable of fixing all issues.

For all of these reasons, it’s hard to justify a Google Pixel or Pixel XL today, even after the price cut. The only reason could be knowing that you’ll get the latest versions of Android ahead of everyone else – at least until October 2018. If that’s enough of a reason for you to spend at least Rs. 44,000, then your choice is pretty simple; for everyone else, the Pixel phones need to go the extra mile to get us on board.
