SanDisk iXpand Mini Flash Drive for iPhone, iPad Launched Starting Rs. 2,750

 

After launching its iXpand Flash Drive earlier this year, Western Digital on Monday launched its SanDisk iXpand Mini Flash Drive, presented as a memory solution for iPhone and iPad. The SanDisk iXpand Mini Flash Drive has already been made available in India in 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB storage capacities, with starting prices ranging between Rs. 2,750 to Rs. 7,050. The new flash drive is available online exclusively through Flipkart.

The SanDisk iXpand Mini Flash Drive offers transfer speeds of up to 70Mbps, as per Western Digital’s claims. It features a different design than the drive launched earlier this year and allows users to connect it directly to the iPhone or iPad without having to remove the case, Western Digital said in its release. It comes with a Lightning connector and a USB 3.0 connector that allows for quick and easy transfer of files between iPhone/ iPad and Mac or PC.

“Smartphone and tablet users are creating more content than ever before and we know that customers are looking for physical mobile storage solutions that are easy to use, portable and reliable,” Khalid Wani, managing director sales at Western Digital Corporation India, was quoted as saying in the release. “The new SanDisk iXpand Mini Flash Drive offers iPhone and iPad users an option to capture everything they love without worrying about running out of space,” he said.

The SanDisk iXpand Mini Flash Drive comes with a companion app, called the iXpand Drive app for iPhone and iPad, which automatically backs up users’ camera rolls as well as content from social networking sites including tagged photos from Facebook and Instagram. The companion app also allows users to watch videos directly from the drive as well.

The iXpand Drive app even allows users to cast content from the SanDisk iXpand Mini Flash Drive directly to their television via Chromecast or Amazon Fire TV. The app is already available for download from the App Store, and launches when the SanDisk iXpand Mini Flash Drive is plugged into an iPhone or iPad. The new flash drive from Western Digital features encryption software that password-protects files and allows users to share content while keeping sensitive files protected across devices.

Confusion over numerical GCSE grades sparks publicity drive

There is widespread confusion about England’s new GCSE grading system, says the exams regulator Ofqual.

Starting this summer, GCSE grades A* to G will be phased out in favour of grades numbered from nine to one.

However, around 70% of more than 400 parents and pupils surveyed by Ofqual did not understand the system.

“It is really important we explain the basics, like the fact that nine is the highest grade,” said Chief Regulator Sally Collier.

Ofqual wants to raise awareness of the numerical grading system which starts this summer, with candidates who sit new more challenging English and maths GCSEs receiving a mixture of number and letter grades.

By the summer of 2018 a mix of numbers and letters will be awarded in an additional 20 subjects, with the letter system entirely phased out by 2019.

Surprising numbers

But according to the regulator’s small survey, awareness is currently low – only 31% of secondary pupils and 30% of parents said they were clear how the new system worked.

Additional research with 50 human resources leaders revealed that less than half of them understood it, while among small businesses, this figure dropped to about a fifth, says Ofqual.

“We don’t want there to be any surprises in summer 2017. It’s really important that we spread the word that GCSE grades are changing from letters to numbers,” said Ms Collier.

“Broadly the same proportion of students will get a grade four above as would have got a grade C or above in the old system,” she explained.

Ofqual’s publicity drive includes a series of online workshops for teaching staff in schools and universities.

The regulator is promising to widen the information drive to include employers in coming months.

The Department for Education says it has been working closely with Ofqual and with exam boards to communicate the changes.

A spokesman said the new numerical grades would be a clear signal to employers, colleges and universities that students have taken the reformed, more challenging GCSEs.

“Our GCSE reforms will create gold-standard qualifications that match the best education systems in the world and allow young people to compete in an increasingly global workplace.

“We continue to work closely with the sector to ensure they understand what the changes will mean for them when they come into effect later this year,” said the spokesman.

‘Huge task’

Michael Turner, director general of the Joint Council for Qualifications which represents exam boards, said communicating the changes to students, parents educators and employers was “a huge task”.

Mr Turner said efforts to spread the word would be “stepped up” in the run-up to the 2017 summer exams.

These reforms apply primarily to schools in England, although some pupils in Wales and Northern Ireland take GCSEs offered by English based exam boards. GCSEs offered by Welsh and Northern Irish exam boards are being reformed separately.

In Scotland National 4 and 5 qualifications replaced Standard Grades in 2014.

The survey was carried out for Ofqual by DJS Research in November last year.

Schools consider four-day week in cost cutting drive

Headteachers at every school in West Sussex have written to parents warning they may be forced to close for one day a week unless they receive emergency financial assistance from the government.

In a letter, which all primary, secondary and special schools in the county sent out, headteachers warned the “crippling effect” of consistent underfunding has prompted schools to consider “modifying opening hours” in a bid to cut costs.

The move follows repeated complaints that West Sussex has been unfairly underfunded.

The letter says that schools have already made “every conceivable cut to our provision”, and are now faced with taking drastic action.

The county received £44m less than the national average, and £200m less than the average London borough this year, according to the Worth Less? campaign, which is calling for fair funding for schools in West Sussex.

The campaign is urging the government to pledge a minimum of £20m in funding to plug the gap in funds until April when the new financial year begins.

“We’re not saying we’re going there yet. We’re saying on the range of things, absolutely everything needs to be explored.”

He told the Guardian: “But we are considering all the options and that’s one option we have to consider. If we are trying to save money there are limited things we can do.”

Mark Anstiss, headteacher of a school in Felpham said: “It would be terrible. I recognise the burden it would place on parents with the childcare costs and so on that they would have to incur if we did this. But we can’t run the school the way that we have been with the money we get at the moment.”

He added: “I really am scratching my head to think about where we can make more cuts. All the obvious things we can do, we’ve done over the years. It just seems really unfair.”

Schools are also considering cutting class sizes, reducing cleaning and maintenance, buying fewer books and computers, implementing a more basic curriculum, and not replacing staff who leave.

But many schools have already taken these steps and are still looking to save money.

The Department for Education responded to say it was increasing its budget for schools and said it was “firmly committed to introducing a national funding formula so that all schools are funded fairly – both to address the historic unfairness in the system and also so that areas with the highest need attract the most funding.”

“We want all schools, including those in West Sussex, to have access to the resources they need so that every pupil regardless of background or ability can reach their full potential. That’s why we have protected the schools budget so that, as pupil numbers increase, so will the amount of money for our schools – in 2016-17 that will total over £40bn, the highest on record.”

 The new national funding formula for schools was due to be introduced next year, but has been delayed following the vote to leave the European Union.

Microsoft Brings Google Drive and Facebook Support to Outlook on Web

Microsoft has finally added Google Drive support for Outlook on Web to allow users to receive and edit the files from the Internet version of its email client. The company has also added the support for Facebook and made it easier to search for attachment in long conversations with its update to Outlook.

The Android and iOS version of Outlook already allowed users to receive and edit the files from Google Drive from inside the app. However, users will now be able to edit their Google Drive documents from the Web version of the Outlook email client as well.

In order to attach a file, all you need to do is open a new message and click on the attachment icon. Then you need to select Google Drive and enter the credentials of your account. After this, your Google Drive account will appear as a source when attaching files.

Now, you can also open the Google Doc, Slide or Sheet files within Outlook instead of opening another window. “Just like photos and Office file types, the Google files open in Outlook next to your message window so your work flow is not disrupted. And, as with Google Drive links, if you have edit permissions, you’ll be able to edit using the full functionality available on Google Drive,” Microsoft said in its official blog.

Similarly, after connecting your Facebook account with Outlook, you can browse and attach your Facebook photos from within Outlook.

Further, Microsoft has made it easier to search for attachments inside the app as at the top of every thread, you will now find an attachment icon. On clicking this icon, it will open a drop-down list of all the attachments in the conversation. You can then simply select the file you are looking for and open it instead of clicking through each reply or expanding the thread.

Scotland’s Children’s Panels launch recruitment drive

Launch of children's panel recruitment drive

A drive has been launched to sign up 500 volunteers as Children’s Panel members.

Recruiters are particularly looking for more applications from younger people to help support some of Scotland’s most vulnerable children.

They say they may be better able to relate to those they’re trying to help.

The Children’s Panel system aims to help vulnerable youngsters who get into trouble, often as a result of having suffered neglect or abuse.

It currently has around 2,500 panel members across Scotland.

‘Different backgrounds’

Boyd McAdam, national convenor and chief executive officer of Children’s Hearings Scotland, said they were looking to “top up their numbers”.

“We rely on volunteers from the community to take decisions about what needs to be done for our vulnerable children,” he said.

Mr McAdam said they wanted to ensure a gender balance in hearings and that different backgrounds were represented on the panels.

He added: “I think the challenge for us is always to bring in younger people.

“It’s what young people say they would like to see – panel members of an age closer to themselves.”

‘Very rewarding’

All volunteers receive extensive training to help them in their role.

Mr McAdam said: “We are looking for someone who has empathy with children and young people who has an ability to listen and obviously to read the paper work and take decisions.”

One existing volunteer, Drew McCulloch, said his role on the Children’s Panel was “very, very hard work but very, very rewarding”.

The supermarket worker from Darvel in Ayrshire, said: “Basically, I have worked in and around Kilmarnock all my life so it’s just something I can give back to the local community that I have worked and served in for 30 years.”

Education policy ‘key to social mobility drive’

Ministers must put education policy at the centre of the drive to deliver social mobility, the Social Mobility Commission chairman has said.

Alan Milburn said an education system in England that left many lacking the skills they needed in the modern labour market must not be tolerated.

He called for a new target that by 2020 at least half of children from poor homes should achieve five good GCSEs.

Ministers say they want every child to reach their full potential.

Speaking at Teach First’s Impact Conference, Mr Milburn also suggested:

  • scrapping tuition fees for teacher training and housing support for existing teachers who worked in the worst schools in disadvantaged areas
  • the lowest performing 20% of schools were given intensive support or had wholesale change in leadership if they continued to fail
  • introducing a new school performance measure in 2018 to track pupil’s destinations into work or continued education

Mr Milburn said at current rates of progress, it would take at least 30 years for the educational attainment gap in schools between poorer and better-off children to halve.

And it would take more than 50 years before the gap in access to university was closed.

He told the conference: “The truth about our country is that over decades Britain has become wealthier but we have struggled to become fairer.

“The introduction of the pupil premium and other reforms are positive steps in the right direction.

“However, efforts to narrow the attainment gap within schools are not being given equal priority to the focus there has been in recent decades on raising the bar of improving all schools. They have to be doing both.

“We should no longer tolerate an education system that produces a cohort of youngsters who simply lack the skills to compete in the modern labour market.

“It will be impossible to make progress in improving social mobility until the educational attainment gap between less well-off and better-off children is closed.

“Our future success in a globally competitive economy relies on using all of our country’s talent not just some of it.”

Brett Wigdortz, founder and chief executive of Teach First, said: “Educational inequality is a slow burning injustice that goes unnoticed, but threatens the very fabric and foundations of a fair society.

“The fact that a child from a poorer background is less likely to succeed at school and life is totally at odds with a British sense of fair play.

“Following Brexit, it’s clear we need to invest in education, the communities and young people that have been left behind if we are to build a better Britain.”

A spokesman for the Department for Education said: “This government is focused on making Britain a country that works for everyone.

“We are determined that every child, regardless of background, gender or ability, has an equal opportunity to reach their full potential.

“The pupil premium, now worth £2.5bn a year, is being spent to improve the education provided to children from the poorest backgrounds.”

New plan to drive up learner participation in science

A new plan to improve the learning and teaching of STEM subjects in Wales and drive up the number of learners studying them is being launched today by Deputy Minister for Skills, Julie James.

The skills gained through the study of STEM subjects are widely recognised as essential to the development of a prosperous and sustainable knowledge economy.

Ahead of British Science week the Welsh Government is launching its ‘STEM in Education and Training – a delivery plan’ to set out the actions it will take to support STEM related subjects for 3 to 19-year-olds in the years ahead.

Deputy Minister for Skills Julie James said:

“I would like to see a major shift in the perception of STEM subjects. Attitudes towards STEM are often based in deep-rooted societal stereotypes and this delivery plan is about breaking down those stereo types.

“This plan also sets out how we will continue our efforts to support and promote  the wider study of STEM subjects, how we will encourage greater numbers of girls to study STEM subjects and how we will work with schools and colleges  to drive up standards and increase attainment levels in STEM subjects across the board.”

The STEM plan builds on the Enterprise and Business Committee’s wide ranging inquiry into STEM skills that was conducted in 2014. It sets out six key priorities for the future. These are to:

  • improve the analysis and reporting of progress on STEM subjects against key indicators
  • ensure the learning and teaching of STEM subjects in schools, colleges and universities evolves and keeps pace with the best in the world
  • develop STEM-related qualifications that are comparable with the rest of the UK and the best in the world.
  • promote the long-term, self-sustaining and system wide development of an education workforce that delivers a new and challenging STEM curriculum
  • increase interest and participation in STEM learning, particularly among girls
  • equip young people with career management skills and knowledge of the options available to them within the STEM sector.

The Welsh Government’s progress against these six actions will be monitored by the Chief Scientific Adviser  for Wales, Professor Julie Williams. Speaking about the plan, she said:

“We know that STEM subjects are essential to the technological, social and economic future of Wales. On a more personal level it is really important that we get the message through to our young people that the study of STEM subjects can make a genuinely positive impact on their futures, and can help them build careers that are rewarding, fulfilling and well paid.”

When you’re trying to attract more visitors to your site and standard sources of traffic are failing you, it’s time to take your efforts to the next level. Try these four methods for increasing the volume of site traffic.

Content marketing

Content marketing gives you dozens, if not hundreds, of creative ways to focus on the core problem your business — or a product — solves. It includes online articles, blog posts (including guest blog posts), infographics, ebooks, white papers, case studies and audio or video productions.

Content marketing is effective. In fact, it generates three times as many leads as traditional outbound marketing but costs 62 percent less. So what’s the secret to content marketing? Adding value to everything you create. If you’re not sure how you can add value through content marketing, ask your existing customers or list members what kind of content would be helpful to them.

The key to content marketing success, according to Jim Yu, the CEO of content marketing firm BrightEdge, “is to present the right content to the users at the time they need it in an engaging manner, across all channels they visit.” And be sure you’re publishing frequently and consistently. If you cover one topic, publish at least once a week. If you cover two topics, publish at least twice a week. IP-specific online advertising with geo-targeting

What we’re really talking about with IP-specific advertising is geo-targeting: the method of determining the geolocation of a website visitor and delivering different content to that visitor based on his or her current location, such as country, region or state, city, or metro code or zip code; organization; IP address; internet service provider (ISP) or other criteria.

You can use geo-targeting to increase engagement and conversion rates of new marketing campaigns. Geo-targeting allows for measurement and personalization at a more complex level than possible with traditional media. Here are a few good starting points for using location-based targeting:

  • Offer incentives (sales, discounts, promotions) to visitors in a specific geographic area.
  • Target messaging to visitors based on proximity to a store, physical office location or competitor’s location.
  • Share marketing messages that are specific to local advertising media markets.
  • Customize the language for a specific geographical location.

QR codes

Quick response (QR) codes provide another way to gather contacts for your traffic-driving efforts. QR codes act like bar codes and pro­vide a smartphone or tablet user with immediate access to a given web page where the user can read the message and take the next step. You could say the QR code is your invitation to a user to begin an offline-to-online transition.

Marketing with QR codes is one of the easiest mobile marketing strategies to get started with, according to Jamie Turner, co-author of Go Mobile (Wiley 2012.. It does, however, require you to have a mobile website (in addition to a standard version) to direct smartphone users with a QR code.

Before the QR code comes the plan: Where are you going to send users and what do you want them to do when they get there? You’ve got to know the answers to those questions before you start a QR code marketing campaign. In addition, the QR code needs to be big and clear enough that even low-quality phones can scan it. And there should be a clear indication of which types of mobile devices can use the QR code. If it’s for Android only, iPhone users will be irritated if they try to scan it and get poor results.

Creating the QR code you’ll use is perhaps the easiest step in the process. And it won’t cost you anything because there are free QR code generators online, such as QR Stuff and Kaywa QR Code.

What are some ways you can use QR codes? Try these:

  • Add a QR code to the Contact page on your website so visitors can download your contact information to their smartphones.
  • Add a QR code to your business card so people can instantly download your contact information (or respond to a lead-generating offer).
  • Include a QR code, or codes, as part of a webinar presentation for audience engagement.
  • Add a QR code to your LinkedIn and Facebook pages to pull people into your website.

You can also use QR codes on direct-mail pieces to help you gain useful information from your campaigns. The scans can tell you which offers are working best and which geographical areas are responding the most. This knowledge can guide you in refining your next campaign.

Never depend on only one or two channels when driving web traffic to your site. Justin Bridegan of MarketingSherpa writes: “It’s always best to have a variety of traffic sources. This minimizes the risk of your website being decimated if your main traffic source dries up.”

With that in mind, let’s dig into five ways you can drive traffic to your site.

Affiliate marketing

This doesn’t just mean you should become an Amazon Associate or Click­Bank affiliate and use that status to drive traffic to your indepen­;dently owned website. Instead, you should start your own affiliate program, where you partner up with people who’ll promote your product or service — generating revenue for both of you and building your email list in the process.

How exactly do you go about finding an affiliate and convincing them to promote your product? All you need to do is set up a page on your website that explains the benefits of promoting your product. In addition to detailing how big of a cut they’ll get from each sale, you’ll also explain how they’ll benefit from being associated with your brand. Include a sign-up form to make it simple for them to contact you. Then, promote the page to individuals and a wider audience in a targeted niche.

Co-registration

This traffic generation strategy has to do with online advertising. It’s a process for collecting subscribers by co-advertising along with other site owners or companies collecting opt-in subscribers. Here’s how it works: When the user opts in to receive an offer from the other participant(s), they’re given the option to subscribe to your information as well.

Co-registration allows you to target a specific demographic or customer subset. Depending on whom you partner with, co-registration can be less expensive than other types of marketing. Also, with co-registration, building your email list doesn’t depend on the amount of web traffic you’re able to generate.

There are two major players in co-registration: Opt-Intelligence and CoregMedia, and many choose to work with them. But, there are also smaller companies worth looking at, such as AfterOffers and BirdDogMedia.

Email

Just a few years ago, the average ROI for email cam­paigns was 4,300 percent. That fact alone should inspire you to focus attention on email marketing.

Because 56 percent of customers are more likely to buy with a personalized experience, you want to personalize your email marketing messages. In fact, the average open rate for emails with a personalized message was 18.8 percent, as compared to 13.1 percent without any personalization, in 2016.

The goal of email marketing is to convert an interested customer into a paying customer by driving traffic to sales pages. You can increase clickthrough and conversion rates by making sure the email and the sales page it hyperlinks to are promoting the same offer.

Google and Bing pay-per-click advertising

Pay-per-click advertising (PPC) is a model of internet marketing in which advertisers pay a fee each time one of their ads is clicked. Es­sentially, PPC gives you a way of “buying” visits to your site, instead of earning those visits organically.

Search engine advertising through Google or Bing is one of the most popular forms of PPC advertising. You’ll bid for ad placement in a search engine’s sponsored links when someone searches on a keyword that is related to the advertised offering. PPC success is achievable if you focus on:

  • Keyword relevance. Develop PPC keyword lists of terms relevant to your audience. Use these lists to write keyword-driven ad text.
  • Landing page quality. If you’re sending people to a landing page, optimize it with persuasive, relevant con­tent and a clear CTA, tailored to specific search queries.
  • Quality score. Both Bing and Google offer quality scores, which rate the quality and relevance of your keywords, land­ing pages and PPC campaigns. Advertisers with better quality scores get more ad clicks at lower costs.

Lead magnets

A lead magnet is a free content offer — an ebook, white paper, case study, e-course or checklist. Your lead magnet should be so relevant to your prospect’s needs or problems that they can’t help but ex­change their contact information to get it.

Of all the possible offers — ebooks, white papers, you name it — which are the most effective lead magnets? Here are five:

  1. The cheat sheet. The problem-based specificity of the cheat sheet, also called a tip sheet, makes it very appealing to pros­pects (and it’s fairly easy to create).
  2. Free templates. These are extremely popular and generate lots of leads, but make sure the template doesn’t replace your service or product offering. Templates can be in Word, Excel or any other common program.
