Update: Crews unable to locate driver who reportedly jumped from a bridge following crash

Update, 10:45 a.m.: The driver of the Nissan Sentra, who reportedly jumped from a bridge into the Yakima River following an overnight crash on State Route 22, has not been located, said the Washington State Patrol.

The driver was a 31-year-old man from Zillah, said Detective Sgt. Mike Russell, a spokesman for the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office.

Search and rescue crews from the sheriff’s office assisted the state patrol with the search.

TOPPENISH, Wash. – Search and rescue crews are searching for a man who jumped off the Yakima River bridge over State Route 22 after a collision Friday morning, the Washington State Patrol reports.

The crash happened a few minutes after midnight when a 1993 Nissan Sentra heading west on SR 22 crossed the centerline and collided with an eastbound tractor trailer, according to a news release from the patrol.

Troopers said the Sentra’s driver got out of the now totaled car and jumped from the bridge into the Yakima River. The search and rescue team from the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office was still searching for that driver Friday morning.

The driver of the tractor trailer, identified as Exequiel Ramirez, 46, of Las Vegas, was not injured in the crash, according to the patrol.

SR 22 was closed in both directions over the bridge for several hours after the crash but it reopened around 3:30 a.m., according to the state Department of Transportation.

Most tweets following fall Paris attacks defended Islam, Muslims

The Paris terrorist attacks of November 13, 2015, sparked a massive global discussion on Twitter and other social media sites between those attacking and those defending Islam and Muslims. The March 22 terrorist attack in Brussels is, of course, sparking similar, heated online debate.

Researchers at the University of Washington Information School and the Qatar Computing Research Institute analyzed 8.36 million tweets beginning seven hours after the Paris attacks and continuing for 50 hours. Searching for words and hashtags relevant to the event, the team identified about 900,000 tweets relating to Islam and Muslims.

They found that while anti-Islam and anti-Muslim sentiments arose on Twitter, most tweets in the huge stream following the Paris attacks actually condemned the negative hashtags and expressed support for Islam.

The study was conducted by a team including Norah Abokhodair—now a UW Information School doctoral student—and begun when she worked with the Qatar Research Institute, in collaboration with Melbourne University. Her co-authors are institute colleagues Walid Magdy and Kareem Darwish.

“Our analysis shows that the majority of tweets showing attitude toward Muslims and Islam after the Paris attacks were positive toward Muslims—defending Muslims and disassociating them from the attacks,” the researchers wrote.

More than 60 percent of tweets about the Paris attacks in the days after that incident defended Muslims and Islam using the hashtags #MuslimsAreNotTerrorists. Also trending at the time, the researchers note, were hashtags such as #IslamistheProblem and even those calling for the death of Muslims.

The study, posted on arXiv in December 2015, was cited in a March 23 CNN article that found a similar trend just following the March 22 attacks in Brussels.

“Similarly, on Tuesday, the #StopIslam hashtag was quickly overtaken by other users slamming the trend as ‘stupid’ and senseless,” CNN reported.

The researchers will present an updated version of the paper in May to the Association for Computer Machinery’s Webscience Conference in Hannover, Germany, which extends the analysis.

In the new paper, the team compares post-event tweets with users’ pre-event network dynamics—who they follow and are followed by, and who they retweet—to focus on how a person’s online content can be used to predict future attitudes in the aftermath of a major event—even if the individual has not expressed opinions online about the topic.

“Social media messages and networks have profound influence on political attitudes and are shaping national policy,” Abokhodair said. “Future research will allow for more accurate predictions of crisis response and policy change.”

Google shuts down Google+ following massive security flaw

Google exposed the data of hundreds thousands of Google+ users due to a faulty API, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. As part of reparations, the company is permanently shutting down Google+.

The API in question, allowed developers access to the public data of the users who signed up to use the app that used that API. The bug in the API allowed the developers to not just access the private, non-public data of the users who signed up as well as people they are connected to.

Google found up to 438 apps that used this API and 496,951 users may have been affected by this bug.

The data being stolen includes full names, email addresses, birth dates, gender, profile photos, places lived, occupation and relationship status. There were no phone numbers, email messages, timeline posts, direct messages or any other type of communication data.

This issue has existed 2015 until Google found out about it in March 2018 and decided to fix it. Google then had a choice to inform its users but chose not to because it wasn’t legally required to and secondly, because it would draw regulatory attention towards itself. Google was afraid it, too, would become the center of attention following Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica scandal, and as such chose not to disclose the information to its users.

Google’s excuse is that it found no evidence of any of the data being misused, however, it also has no way of being sure of that. The company did not check up with any of the developers of the aforementioned 438 apps.

Google also said the consumer version of Google+ had low usage and engagement and 90% of user sessions are less than five seconds long, essentially trashing its own product to cover up. The company is henceforth shutting down Google+ to consumers.

Google is also said to working on improving security elsewhere, including restricting developer access to things such as SMS, call logs, and contact data on Android and add-ons for Gmail.
