Intel Takes 15 Percent Stake in German Digital Mapping Firm Here

US chip maker Intel will take a 15 percent stake in German digital mapping firm Here, it said on Tuesday, as it seeks to build its presence in automated driving technology.

A filing to the German cartel office on Tuesday showed Intel has sought approval to buy a stake in the company, which is controlled by German carmakers Daimler, BMW and Volkswagen .

Intel and Here said in a statement that they had also signed an agreement to collaborate on the research and development of real-time updates of high definition (HD) maps for highly- and fully-automated driving.

Intel did not disclose how much it would pay for the stake but said the transaction is expected to close in the first quarter.

The deal highlights a shift in the dynamics of research and development in the car industry, which until recently saw automakers largely dictating terms for suppliers to manufacture their proprietary technologies at specified volumes and prices.

Now carmakers are increasingly striking partnerships with technology firms using open technology standards, seeking to harness their expertise in areas including machine learning and mapping as they race against Silicon Valley companies such as Google, Tesla and Apple to develop driverless vehicles.

Last month two Chinese companies and Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC agreed to buy a 10 percent stake in Here and in July, BMW teamed up with Intel and Mobileye to develop self-driving cars by 2021.

BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen bought Here for EUR 2.8 billion ($2.9 billion) in 2015 from mobile equipment maker Nokia of Finland.

Last September, Here said it would introduce a new set of traffic services allowing drivers to see for themselves what live road conditions are like miles ahead using data from competing automakers, an industry first.

Nazi prank taints Argentina German school

Boys from a Buenos Aires German school brawled with Jewish students at a disco in Argentina – and now they will have to visit a Holocaust museum together.

The visit was decided on by outraged school authorities and parents.

Argentinian media report that the fight erupted in Bariloche, an Andean tourism centre, after some Lanus Oeste German School boys sported Hitler moustaches and Nazi swastikas on their bodies.

They will go on an educational trip to the Holocaust Museum in Buenos Aires.

Three of the Lanus Oeste boys were immediately sent back to Buenos Aires from the resort city. The brawl took place during a fancy dress party at a disco on Tuesday night.

Parents of students from the ORT Jewish School in Buenos Aires said the three from Lanus Oeste had “provoked and insulted” ORT boys with their pro-Nazi gesture.

Apology

The director of the Lanus Oeste German School, Silvia Fazio, apologised for the students’ behaviour, saying “those students must understand that this is wrong, that this must never happen again and that it is totally abhorrent”.

A number of wanted Nazi war criminals fled to Argentina after World War Two, and were sheltered by far-right Argentinian military officers.Bariloche has decades-old German links. Controversially, a notorious SS commander, Erich Priebke, lived in the city after the war, until his extradition to Italy in 1995.

The Argentinian news website La Nacion said (in Spanish) that the two school groups had shared activities on the trip to Bariloche and had stayed at neighbouring hotels.

President Gustavo Sakkal of the Holocaust Museum condemned the anti-Semitic incident, in remarks to the Jewish News Agency (AJN). “A joke can lead to the most horrific things in history”.

He and the German Ambassador, Bernhard Graf von Waldersee, discussed the idea of organising a “discussion” at the museum for the students involved. “Through education we must show those boys that this is a very serious issue,” he said.

Argentina’s Education Minister, Esteban Bullrich, told the Clarin newspaper (in Spanish) that it was a “deplorable” incident.

“This happened because of inadequate education,” he said. “It was a case of discrimination, exclusion and intolerance. Therefore we must work inside the school, and outside it, because this is not an isolated case.”

The multi-year contract for 1,700 fingerprint scanners will see more than 900 units delivered in 2019.

LIVETOUCH QUATTRO features an integrated display that provides feedback before and during fingerprint capture, ensuring that any user, regardless of their level of knowledge, language or culture, can capture fingerprints quickly and accurately. Its compact size design allows easy integration into various border police capture systems.

“The acceptance of biometric applications is highly determined by the user-friendliness of the systems,” explains Roberto Wolfer, one of the founders and CEOs of JENETRIC. “Therefore it plays an important role that the devices interact actively and in real time with the user. We are pleased that the German Federal Police has taken this aspect into account and that our devices are now being used at all airports in Germany.”

The European Union recently finalized specifications for the biometrics used in its Entry/Exit System.

LIVETOUCH QUATTRO Compact was recently certified by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). The BSI tested and certified the image quality of the device according to technical guideline TR-03121 for biometrics in government applications.
