Amazon India to Create Over 7,500 Temporary Jobs Ahead of Great Indian Sale

Amazon.in will create well over 7,500 temporary jobs for its upcoming sale, and these positions will mostly be in logistics to ensure smooth deliveries.

Amazon.in will host its ‘Great Indian Sale’ between January 20-22, 2017.

“We have opened more than 7,500 seasonal roles for our upcoming Great Indian Sale. These roles will be available at 27 Fulfilment Centres, over 100 delivery stations and close to 15 sort centres across the country,” Amazon India Vice President – India Customer Fulfilment Akhil Saxena told PTI.

He added that throughout the year, Amazon.in generates thousands of seasonal job opportunities, as well as opportunities for long term career development.

“Recruitment for seasonal roles is now underway and will be trained for the upcoming sale. We are excited to welcome these new personnel,” he said.

Locked in an intense battle for leadership in the Indian e-commerce market with local rivals like Flipkart and Snapdeal, Amazon.in has aggressively invested in expanding its infrastructure and delivery capabilities.

The company has invested in six new Fulfilment Centres (FCs) last year, taking the total number of operational FCs to 27 in 10 states.

“The infrastructure that has been built helps thousands of sellers reach millions of new customers across the country.

It has also enabled Amazon.in to offer faster and quicker delivery of products to more pin codes,” he said.

The US-based Amazon has committed investments worth over $5 billion for its India operations.

Indian Enterprises Not Able to Respond to Cyber Threats: EY Survey

While India Inc is spending more on cyber-security each year, organisations are still not confident of their ability to sense, resist and respond to cyber threats, a survey by global professional services organisation EY said on Wednesday.

Sixty nine percent of the Indian respondents reported an increase in their cyber-security budgets over the last 12 months and almost three-fourths expect budgets to increase further in the next year.

Despite the increased investments, 75 percent of the Indian respondents say that their cyber-security function does not fully meet their organisations’ needs.

“We will need immense focus to encourage technological innovations in cyber-security to secure national critical infrastructure from cyber criminals,” said Gulshan Rai, National Cybersecurity Coordinator, National Security Council, Prime Minister’s Office, Government of India, during the release of the survey findings at an event in New Delhi.

Management and governance issues (42 percent), followed by lack of quality tools for managing information security and lack of executive awareness and support (41 percent) were seen as the main challenges for information security operations by the Indian respondents as compared to lack of budgets (61 percent) and skilled resources (56 percent) globally.

Thirty eight per cent of the respondents say that boards are not fully knowledgeable about cyber risks. Thirty seven percent cited budget constraints and lack of skilled resources (39 percent) as obstacles.

“While respondents are more confident of their ability to predict and detect a cyber-attack with 52 percent saying that they would be able to do so, but not enough attention is being given to building basic, yet essential capabilities,” the findings showed.

More than half of the respondents (55 percent) do not have a formal, threat intelligence programme, while 44 percent do not have a vulnerability identification capability.

Further, 33 percent do not have a security operations centre (SoC), which serves as a continuous monitoring mechanism.

“Since cyber resilience cannot be achieved by buying security-in-a-box, organisations need to focus on gathering periodic threat intelligence, enhancing their threat-hunting and breach-detection capabilities, and institutionalising a robust incident-response framework,” said Nitin Bhatt, EY India’s Risk Advisory Leader.

Amazon Launchpad Launched in India; Showcases Products by Indian Startups

Amazon had introduced its Launchpad initiative in the US last year. At that point, the retail giant had partnered with over 25 crowdfunding platforms like Indiegogo, apart from venture capital firms, helping startups offer their products to the world on a platform as well-known as Amazon. The company would be in charge of inventory and order fulfilment, as well as customer service to an extent. Now, Amazon has launched the platform in India, however, in a slightly different form.

The US-based retail giant has partnered with Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion’s (DIPP) Start Up India initiative, as well as NASSCOM 10,000 Startups, and Indian Angel Network (IAN), amongst others accelerator and incubator programmes, with the aim of identifying and enrolling startups that can showcase their products on Amazon Launchpad. The company has also named a few strategic partners for the initiative, namely NITI Aayog, Government of Maharashtra, Government of Telangana, and TiE.

The company says Amazon Launchpad initiative in India will help Indian startups market, sell, and deliver their products to millions of Amazon customers across India the country and globally. While browsing the newly launched Launchpad section on Amazon India, Gadgets 360 however saw products from several non-Indian companies, such as Pebble, Withings, and Sugru. It appears Amazon may need to work on its filtering to ensure only products by Indian startups are visible.

The company in a press statement said that the Amazon Launchpad store in India features over 400 products ranging from wearable technology, smart homes, food and beverage, health monitoring, educational toys and more. The statement adds that even before its launch, over 25 Indian startups like Witworks, Leaf Wearables, Ducere Technologies, Seventh Sense Technologies have already joined the programme.

Startups that are associated with the Amazon Launchpad programme in India will get benefits like brand development (such as custom product pages, a dedicated Q&A section), customer reach (on-site merchandise placements, personalized recommendations, external program PR, and access to advertising), fulfilment along with customer service, and finally global expansion. The company added that when the Indian startups are ready to reach global customers, Amazon will help them expand to nine Amazon marketplaces across the world.

Amazon adds that startups interested in joining the Amazon Launchpad programme will need to have a “promising, unique and ready-to-ship product” that is compliant with Amazon policies. The Startup Application Form can be accessed on the dedicated Launchpad page.

“By bringing Amazon Launchpad to India, we encourage innovation from the startup community. India has great minds which invent amazing products and we will support their growth by helping customers discover their new products not just in India but other countries around the world,” said Amit Agarwal, Vice President and Country Head, Amazon India.

“Through this programme, small entrepreneurs and innovators can go leverage the Amazon platform to increase the scale of their businesses and even get easy access to global markets,” noted Jason Feldman, Director Global Innovations, Amazon.

“NASSCOM is excited to support and partner with the Amazon Launchpad programme in India. The timing couldn’t have been better. The nascent but promising Indian hardware/IoT product ecosystem can now fully leverage the firepower of Amazon’s distribution and marketing capabilities.” added Dr R. “The biggest roadblock for a hardware startup is not product development but finding early adopters for its product. Amazon Launchpad is just the right platform to find them,” said Paras Batra, Director Sales and Marketing, Leaf Wearables.

Indian students in the US at record high

The number of Indian students studying in the US soared by 25% to a record high, figures from 2015-2016 show.

The 2016 Open Doors data says Indian students contribute more than $5.5bn (£4.4bn) to the American economy.

It comes against the backdrop of a steep decline in Indian students opting for the UK, with one estimate citing a 50% drop in four years.

Analysts say tougher visa rules in the UK and the stabilisation of the rupee against the dollar explain the trend.

A total of 165,918 Indians are now studying in the US, up from 132,888 in 2014-15, the report says. It is released by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in collaboration with the US State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

The report says India accounted for the largest growth in students in the US for the second year in a row, primarily at the “graduate and optional practical training” levels.

Students from China, India and Saudi Arabia now account for more than half of the million-plus foreign students in the US.

China remained the country with the largest number of students in US, with almost twice the number of students as India.

“But India’s rate of growth and absolute increases outpaced China’s,” the report said.

“With the stabilising of the rupee against the dollar over the past couple of years, Indian students who had put their plans on hold were then able to come to the US,” Rajika Bhandari, deputy vice-president for research and evaluation at IIE, told the Mint newspaper.

“Lastly, the tightening of policies in the UK might have diverted some of the Indian students who would have studied there to the US instead.”

Earlier this year an all-party parliamentary group in the UK said Britain’s immigration strategy was costing the country its share of the valuable international student market.

Donald Trump Win: Impact on Indian IT May Not Be as Bad as Expected, Say Experts

US presidency under Donald Trump could spell a difficult time for the software and outsourcing industry jobs, but the impact may not be as dramatic as anticipated, say experts.

Trump had earlier said the Americans are living through the greatest job theft in the history of the world, saying the companies are moving out jobs from the US to countries like India, China, Mexico and Singapore.

He had also accused US technology giant IBM of laying off 500 workers in Minneapolis and shifting their jobs to India and other countries as he warned of levying a 35 percent tax on companies doing so if he is elected.

Trump was on Wednesday elected as the new President of the US. “With this win, the immigration policies that Trump stands for could spell a difficult time for the software and outsourcing industry, significantly affecting the growth of this industry and related remittances from the US to India which are considerably high,” Antal International India MD Joseph Devasia said.

“In the short term, this would be a space worth watching and how immediate policy decisions may impact India.”

Rituparna Chakraborty, co-founder and Senior Vice-president, TeamLease, said: “Believe Trump won the election on his protectionist pitch; however, once he takes over the Oval Office the business man in him shall surface.”

She further said even before Trump came to power, visa norms got tightened and one should anticipate the same to continue or probably become a tad more difficult. However, to restrict all jobs that are currently outsourced to India from within the US may take some time to manifest.

“The turnaround will take a while to manifest and the desired skills and the numbers may not be readily available in the US right now. India is an important ally for the US in geo-political space and one would see reasonable trade-offs being made which cannot be one-sided as incidentally India is an important domestic market for many American firms,” she explained.

“There would be a mixed impact on IT and BPO/KPO services jobs; however, it may not be as dramatic as anticipated,” Chakraborty, who is also the president of Indian Staffing Federation, added.

According to Sunil Sharma, Chief Investment Officer, Sanctum Wealth Management, the IT sector could get negatively impacted, especially in the short term.

“However, we do not expect significant impact in the long term as the cost advantage of emerging nations like India should outweigh, going forward,” Sharma added.

Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have agreed to block ads for Indian services that help determine a baby’s sex before birth, adhering to laws intended to address one of the world’s worst gender imbalances.

All three companies pledged to honour bans on the promotion of sexual-determination tests and related products, the health ministry told India’s Supreme Court on Monday. The court was hearing a case that sought the abolition of all content on search engines that promote such services.

India’s highest court this year reproached the search giants for disregarding domestic regulations, and warned them to abide by the law or cease operations in the country. But the trio of companies had said sweeping bans on offending key-words would also block non-promotional content such as research reports and news articles. The health ministry didn’t say during Monday’s testimony how the companies intended to effect the ban.

Female foeticide and infanticide are serious issues in India, where there were 943 females per 1,000 males according to the last nationwide census in 2011. Conducting, selling and advertising fetal sex-selection services was made a punishable offense in 1994, thus outlawing sex-determination and abortions. Yet thousands of female foetuses are aborted secretly every year in clinics across local communities with a strong preference for sons.

Some parents prefer sons because they’re considered more reliable bread-winners and better able to carry on the family name. Male children are known to get better nutrition and education and a 2015 United Nations report said India had one of the world’s most skewed sex ratios in the under-five age group. The UN added that 100 girls die by the age of five, compared with 93 boys.

Google said it has taken action to prevent searches and advertising to comply with local laws. That includes disabling auto-complete predictions for relevant terms on its site and showing a warning that tells users pre-natal gender screening or testing is illegal in India.

Yahoo said in an email the company can’t comment because the matter is subjudice. Microsoft didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

180 Indian Firms Hit by Ransomware So Far in 2016: Trend Micro

Over 180 Indian companies were victims of “ransomware” – or online extortion schemes – in the first six months of this year, a report said on Tuesday.

Ransomware, also called Business Email Compromise (BEC), globally caused companies a loss of a whopping $3 billion (roughly Rs. 19,946 crores), the report said – although no figure has been provided for losses in India.

BEC schemes are scam tactics which compromise business accounts in order to facilitate an unauthorised fund transfer and is considered one of the most dangerous threats to organisations.

According to Trend Micro Incorporated, a global leader in security software and solutions, 2016 has proven to be a year of online extortion through various malicious attacks.

“While it’s unfortunate for us, cybercriminals are resilient and flexible when it comes to altering an attack method each time we find a patch or solution,” said Ed Cabrera, Chief Cybersecurity Officer for Trend Micro, in a statement.

“It bodes well for businesses to anticipate being targeted and to prepare accordingly, implementing the latest security solutions, virtual patching and employee education to mitigate risks from all angles,” he added.

In total, 79 new ransomware families were identified in the first six months of the year, which surpasses the total number of new families found in all of 2015.

Both new and old variants caused a total of $209 million (roughly Rs. 1,389 crores) in monetary losses to enterprises globally. Ransomware attacks found in the first half of 2016 – like BEC scams – originated from emails 58 percent of the time.

The effectiveness of BEC scams lies in the techniques employed against its preferred targets. Attackers are able to deceive victims by combining their knowledge of social engineering techniques and well-researched information about the target.

Once attackers had picked someone of authority to spoof, their next move would involve tricking their victims to permit a fund transfer to serve as payment for an invoice or perhaps a legal settlement.

“An effective way to defend against BEC scams should be a mixture of proper employee education and security solutions that will help identify threats even before they reach a person’s inbox,” the report said.

An email solution that is able to flag social engineering techniques is needed to effectively block malicious email messages that are used in BEC campaigns, it added.

Indian Firms Must Invest More in Cyber-Security to Tackle Attacks: FireEye

While governments the world over are concerned about how to tackle growing cyber crimes, Indian firms are more vulnerable to data breach because poor investments in adopting and implementing top-of-the-line security solutions, a top executive of US-based network security company FireEye has said.

“If we had to compare countries, the Australian Strategic Policy Institute ranks India lower in cyber-security maturity than Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, China and Vietnam,” said Vishak Raman, Senior Regional Director for India and SAARC, FireEye.

“It is important to see the bigger picture and not see vulnerability as a horse race between regions. The US cyber-security far outpaces India’s and yet, the US is routinely plagued by massive cyber challenges,” Ramn told IANS as FireEye released its first “Mandiant M-Trends Asia Pacific” report on Thursday.

“In some ways, India is more vulnerable to advanced attacks and in some, we are less vulnerable because cyber-security is increasingly becoming a priority for our leaders,” he noted.

The report highlighted that the Asia-Pacific organisations were breached for a median period of 520 days before discovering it, trailing European and US counterparts.

“We can all agree that 520 days is far too long for attackers to be lurking inside organisations,” Raman said.

The report shared statistics and insights from Mandiant – a subsidiary of FireEye – investigations in the region in 2015 and examined the latest cyber trends and tactics threat actors used to compromise businesses and steal data.

Most breaches in the Asia Pacific region never became public.

Unlike in markets with greater security maturity such as the US, most governments and industry-governing bodies lack effective breach disclosure laws.

According to the findings, the Asia-Pacific organisations are often unprepared to identify and respond to breaches.

They cannot defend their networks from attackers because they frequently lack basic response processes and plans, threat intelligence, technology and expertise.

“Determined attackers can do significant damage. It is imperative that organisations bring together the threat intelligence, technology and expertise necessary to effectively combat these threats,” Raman noted.

“While the RBI’s cyber-security framework, released in June this year, has emphasised the need for banks to develop a cyber-crisis management plan and prepare for zero-day attacks, remote access threats and targeted attacks, other industry sectors in India do not have similar guidelines,” the FireEye executive commented.

FireEye’s earlier research showed that about 24 percent of Indian organisations were exposed to advanced threats, compared to 15 percent globally.
