After its pre-GST sale, Paytm Mall has announced the ‘Back to College’ laptop sale. The sale is already underway and will go on till June 25. Intel Takes 15 Percent Stake in German Digital Mapping Firm Here

US chip maker Intel will take a 15 percent stake in German digital mapping firm Here, it said on Tuesday, as it seeks to build its presence in automated driving technology.

A filing to the German cartel office on Tuesday showed Intel has sought approval to buy a stake in the company, which is controlled by German carmakers Daimler, BMW and Volkswagen .

Intel and Here said in a statement that they had also signed an agreement to collaborate on the research and development of real-time updates of high definition (HD) maps for highly- and fully-automated driving.

Intel did not disclose how much it would pay for the stake but said the transaction is expected to close in the first quarter.

The deal highlights a shift in the dynamics of research and development in the car industry, which until recently saw automakers largely dictating terms for suppliers to manufacture their proprietary technologies at specified volumes and prices.

Now carmakers are increasingly striking partnerships with technology firms using open technology standards, seeking to harness their expertise in areas including machine learning and mapping as they race against Silicon Valley companies such as Google, Tesla and Apple to develop driverless vehicles.

Last month two Chinese companies and Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC agreed to buy a 10 percent stake in Here and in July, BMW teamed up with Intel and Mobileye to develop self-driving cars by 2021.

BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen bought Here for EUR 2.8 billion ($2.9 billion) in 2015 from mobile equipment maker Nokia of Finland.

Last September, Here said it would introduce a new set of traffic services allowing drivers to see for themselves what live road conditions are like miles ahead using data from competing automakers, an industry first.

Microsoft Partners Intel for Project Evo; Outlines Hardware Plans to Complete With Amazon Echo, Google Home

Microsoft is reportedly working on a “Home Hub” feature for Windows 10 to allow users to perform various functions using voice commands. This feature is positioned to rival devices like Amazon Echoand Google Home. In the meanwhile, Microsoft has partnered with Intel for ‘Project Evo’, what appears to be a move to lay the hardware groundwork for this feature and allow device makers to incorporate Home Hub in a tablet laptop, or even a PC.

In a blog post, Terry Myerson, Executive Vice President of the Windows and Devices Group at Microsoft, detailed the areas the companies would be working together on. These include far-field speech communications (allowing users to use Cortana across the room), security capabilities to protect devices from malware and hacking threats (including biometric authentication), mixed reality experiences, and gaming innovations.

Microsoft looks to give the device makers the freedom to incorporate the latest artificial intelligence with Cortana in the hardware that they desire. “Customers are device creators. There’s a lot of enthusiasm for wake on voice, devices with far-field voice capabilities, devices with small screens, large screens, and no screens at all,” explained Myerson, in an interview with The Verge.

Microsoft doesn’t intend to make a hardware product similar to the Amazon Echo or Google Home, but just provide its device partners with the software ability to compete with them. This Home Hub feature should be able to listen to voice-based commands and perform tasks, support wake on voice and far-field speech communications, just like Amazon and Google’s AI assistants. This smart speaker’s feature will work on PCs, 2-in-1s, all-in-ones, and even tablets.

“From a platform perspective, our goal is to build this platform that provides a set of silicon options for these device creators, that allows them to choose the screen sizes they’re choosing, and allows them to decide whether they want touch or not, support pen or not. So they can pursue their own vision of what the ideal device is,” Myerson told the publication.

The Home Hub feature is not expected to launch before late next year. It is supposed to extend to Android and iOS devices as well, via the Cortana app. Microsoft is reportedly already in talks with hardware partners like Lenovo and HP to product Home Hub specific hardware. The new hardware that’s fully compatible with Home Hub may include light and motion sensors as well, that switches off the device when no-one is in the room.

Finally, in what definitely seems like a step towards Home Hub, the latest Insider Preview build of Windows 10 (build 14986) brings ability to use Cortana to switch off your PC via voice commands. The Verge reports that Cortana can also be used to put the PC to sleep, or restart it, apart from locking the PC, and changing system volume. The update let Cortana change tracks in some music streaming services like iHeartRadio and TuneInRadio, when the PC is locked. Two other Cortana based features are the ability to ask which song is playing, and bring up a view optimised for distance viewing if users say “Hey Cortana” when the PC is idle for more than 10 seconds.

Intel India Announces Finalists of 'Innovate for Digital India Challenge 2.0'

Intel India on Monday announced the top 10 finalists of the “Intel and DST-Innovate for Digital India Challenge 2.0” – a nationwide competition inviting technology solutions to solve real problems faced by citizens.

The shortlisted solutions can potentially accelerate projects in the fields of healthcare, smart cities, sustainability and agriculture, the company said in a statement.

“Local innovators are becoming increasingly passionate about using technology to positively impact lives and Intel India is very excited to be a part of the ecosystem that is making this happen,” said Debjani Ghosh, Managing Director and Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Intel South Asia.

The companies and teams will leverage Intel architecture (iA) to develop their prototyped solutions that integrate Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, open data, cloud technology, devices and/or connectivity aimed at solving India’s grassroots problems.

The selected teams will advance to the eight-week “NanoAccelerator” programme at the T-Hub startup incubator in Hyderabad.
Under the programme, each team will receive grants up to Rs. 3 lakh to create minimum-viable products (MVPs) based on iA.

They will also have access to engineering support and hardware kits from Intel and to the Intel Maker Lab in Bengaluru as well as the IoT Lab at T-Hub in Hyderabad.

Intel Raises Revenue Forecast as PC Market Improves

Intel raised its quarterly revenue forecast for the first time in more than two years as suppliers of parts used in personal computers replenish their inventory amid improving PC demand.

Shares of the world’s largest chipmaker rose as much as 4.1 percent to a more than 15-year high of $38.05 on Friday.

Intel, which helped found the personal computer industry, has been struggling as tech users shift away from PCs to mobile phones for their computing needs.

Sales in the company’s PC business declined 3 percent to $7.3 billion (roughly Rs. 48,811 crores) in the latest quarter. The unit includes sales of chips for mobile phones and tablets.

However, there have been signs PC demand may be recovering.

HP, which houses the hardware business of the former Hewlett-Packard Co, said last month that revenue in its computer business rose 7.5 percent in the third quarter from the second as sales of notebooks improved.

FBN Securities analyst Shebly Seyrafi said commentary from Intel and HP suggested that PCs were “not as dead as people were thinking.”

Research firm IDC said in July global PC shipments fell less than expected in the second quarter, helped by strength in the United States.

“We expect PC units to decline less than the high-single-digit decline consensus in 2017, driven by continued Windows 10 upgrades and accelerating SSD adoption, along with new form factors,” Baird Equity Research analyst Tristan Gerra wrote, raising his price target to $42 from $40.

Intel said on Friday it expected third-quarter revenue to be $15.6 billion (roughly Rs. 1,04,325 crores), plus or minus $300 million, compared with its prior forecast of $14.9 billion (roughly Rs. 99,644 crores), plus or minus $500 million.

That implies the highest-ever quarterly revenue for Intel, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Analysts on average were expecting $14.90 billion, according to Thomson Reuters.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Amit Daryanani said the pre-announcement was a good first step to the PC story stabilizing at Intel, and raised his price target by $2 to $38.

Shares of rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc were up about 1 percent, while those of Micron Technology Inc and HP were marginally higher.

Shares of Santa Clara, California-based Intel were up 2.6 percent at $37.53 in afternoon trading.

Up to Thursday’s close, the stock had risen 6.1 percent this year, underperforming the 20.8 percent gain in the broader Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index during the period.

Intel India, DST Partner on Digital India Challenge 2.0

In its bid to inspire grassroots innovation and harness local talent in the country, Intel India along with the Department of Science & Technology (DST) on Thursday launched “Digital India Challenge 2.0”.

Presented in collaboration with MyGov, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeITY) and Hyderabad-based T-Hub Foundation, this year’s challenge invites innovators makers across India to build solutions to accelerate the digitisation and commercially develop their prototypes on Intel Architecture (iA).

“It is heartening to see public-private collaborations, such as the one between Intel India, MeITY, MyGov and T-Hub, driven towards building a long-term innovation culture in the nation,” said Telangana Information and Technology Minister K.T. Rama Rao.

This year, the challenge will roll out in five phases, with the final taking place in April 2017.

Shortlisted teams will receive Rs. 3 lakh grant each to create minimum-viable products (MVPs) based on Intel Architecture (iA) in an accelerator programme at the T-Hub incubator in Hyderabad.

The winning team will get Rs. 20 lakh to further their project development.

“Last year, there were six ideas under the challenge that completed the mind-to-market journey, and are already making their solutions available in the Indian health care and agriculture sectors,” added Gaurav Dwivedi, CEO, MyGov.

The Intel India initiative aims to enable technology innovation in the country for students, entrepreneurs and other innovators.

“Innovation is the key ingredient for making the Digital India vision a reality, and we need a local, sustainable innovation ecosystem, to address the country’s challenges,” said Debjani Ghosh, Managing Director and Vice President (Sales & Marketing), Intel South Asia.

“Through strong public-private collaboration, wherein MeITY, MyGov, T-Hub, and Intel India are working together to turn ideas to solutions, disruptive yet sustainable technology innovations are now a reality,” she added.

In its recent collaboration with NITI Aayog, Intel India is working to establish Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATLs) for “mini makers” in 10 schools across the country.

Intel to Spin Out McAfee Unit, Sell Stake in Business to TPG

Intel Corp said it would spin out its cyber security division, formerly known as McAfee, and sell a majority stake in it to investment firm TPG for $3.1 billion in cash.

TPG will own 51 percent of the new entity, valuing the entire company at $4.2 billion including debt.

Intel, which bought McAfee for $7.7 billion in 2011, will retain a 49 percent stake in the business.

The deal ends a failed effort by Intel to stake out a major position in the computer security business. At the time of the acquisition, Intel spoke of integrating McAfee security technology into its chips, but little came of those plans.

Intel executives at the time also said they hoped the acquisition would give it a piece of the emerging business of protecting corporations from sophisticated espionage, but newer players such as Mandiant, now a unit of FireEye, came to dominate that business.

At the same time, PC growth slowed, eroding the traditional McAfee customer base’s potential.

The unit, rebranded as Intel Security Group in 2014, will revert to the McAfee brand name following the closing of the deal, expected in the second quarter of 2017.

McAfee’s founder, John McAfee, was for a time on the run from a murder investigation in Belize and is a pariah in the industry. He recently sued Intel to get back the right to use his name.

Chris Young, Intel Security’s general manager, will be named chief executive of the new company.

Intel Security’s revenue rose 11 percent to $1.1 billion through the first half of this year, the company said in a statement.

TPG, which is making a $1.1 billion equity investment in the company, first approached Intel’s board about a potential transaction for McAfee around a year ago, sources familiar with the matter said.

TPG also led a $120 million investment round for security startup Tanium last year and was the lead investor in a $100 million funding round in internet security firm Zscaler.

TPG Said to Be Among Possible Bidders for Intel Security Unit McAfee

TPG is among potential bidders for Intel Corp.’s computer-security unit McAfee, people with knowledge of the matter said.

The private equity firm has held preliminary discussions with Intel about a deal that could value McAfee at as much as $3 billion, said the people, who asked not to be named because the process is private. Intel is also talking to other potential bidders, including buyout firms and corporate suitors, they said.

Talks are at an early stage and Intel may choose not to sell the business, the people said. The chipmaker hasn’t hired banks to run a formal sale process, they said.

Some buyout firms that had shown preliminary interest in McAfee, including Permira Holdings and Thoma Bravo, are not currently actively pursuing the unit, the people said. The potential suitors were put off by slower-than-expected growth of the business and a lack of obvious cost reductions, two of the people said.

Representatives for TPG, Intel and Thoma Bravo declined to comment. A spokeswoman for Permira didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Intel is considering offloading the anti-virus software unit as part of a strategy to focus on its more profitable data-center business. The Santa Clara, California-based chipmaker acquired McAfee in 2011 for $7.7 billion (roughly Rs. 51,467 crores) to build security features directly into its silicon products.

New Intel India Initiative Seeks to Infuse Technology in Education

In an effort to contribute further to the “Digital India” initiative, chip-making giant Intel India on Friday launched an initiative to strengthen the use of technology in the country’s education ecosystem.

At an event jointly organised by Intel and the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry here, the company said it is collaborating with leading device manufacturers, education digital content and publishers and education solution providers to build end-to-end solutions that promote the use of technology in India’s education sector.

“The initiative to create a comprehensive ecosystem is an endeavour to establish an accessible digital infrastructure that enables affordable solutions,” said Debjani Ghosh, managing director of Intel South Asia, in a statement.

As part of this collaboration, Intel has made available its “Intel Pentium Processor A1020” to leading device manufacturer partners.

The processor delivers power savings and is optimal for devices designed for running education applications in semi-urban and rural India.

Device manufacturers such as Acer, HP, Dell, Lenovo, Micromax, Datamini and iBall will continue to provide a spectrum of Intel architecture-based devices, the company informed.

Intel will help deploy management solutions for schools, classrooms, content and learning and also manage student information systems.

Which Intel motherboard should you buy? After initially launching with the Z370 chipset alone in October 2017, Intel fleshed out the 300-series lineup with a full range of motherboard options in April, complete with nice extra features not included in Z370. It then plopped a cherry on top by releasing enthusiast-class Z390 motherboards alongside the 9th-gen Core processors in October 2018. These motherboards should work with both 8th-gen and 9th-gen Core CPUs (though older models may need a BIOS revision to support the new chips) so you’ve got options galore now.

Should you buy a Z390, H370, B360, or H310 motherboard for those fancy features that weren’t available when Z370 rolled out? Does it make sense to splurge on a high-end Z370 or Z390 chipset anyway? Let’s examine what each Intel 300-series motherboard chipset offers so you can make the right decision when you buy an Intel CPU.

Z390 vs. Z370 vs. H370 vs. B360 vs. H310

You need a new Intel 300-series motherboard if you buy an 8th-gen or 9th-gen “Coffee Lake” processor. Older motherboards don’t work with Intel’s current CPUs, and that includes the recent 100- and 200-series options for Skylake and Kaby Lake chips. While Coffee Lake chips are largely based around the same architecture as those predecessors, the new processors pack in more cores, which means they have different power requirements.

Here’s a look at raw specifications for each of the Intel 300-series motherboard chipsets available to consumers. You won’t see the new Z390 motherboards in the chart; they mirror the basic loadout of the Z370 chipset, but with a handful of additional features added, including up to six speedy USB Gen. 2 ports.

Z370 motherboards and Z390 motherboards are the gold standard, built for enthusiast PCs. These are the only Intel motherboards that support CPU and memory overclocking (if you have an unlocked K-series chip), or handle gaming rigs with multiple graphics cards, at least until Z390 boards become available. They’re loaded with the most PCI-E lanes, potential USB ports (with one notable caveat—more on that after), and RAID storage options. As flagship chipsets, they also offer the most high-speed I/O lanes. More HSIO lanes let board makers divvy out more features, like NVMe SSD connections and SuperSpeed USB ports, as they see fit.

Z390 motherboards released a year after Z370 and added the niceties introduced in the more mainstream options. Its basic loadout matches Z370’s capabilities, but you’ll also get Intel wireless networking, native SDXC support, and up to six USB 3.1 Gen. 2 ports integrated, as well as a newer Intel Management Engine (IME) firmware version. If you’re building a new system from scratch, opt for Z390 and its abundant USB 3.1 ports over Z370, unless you can find a comparable Z370 board at a steep discount. If you already own a Z370 board, it doesn’t make much sense to upgrade to Z390.
