Amazon, Flipkart Host Back to College Laptop Sales: Here Are the Top Offers

Amazon India and Flipkart are both hosting Back to College laptop sales on their respective sites. Both the e-commerce verticals are offering different deals, exchange offers, and No Cost EMI options on laptops from varied brands for students going back to college after the long summer vacation.

Amazon India has listed Intel-powered laptops from Lenovo, HP, Dell, and more with exchange offers and No Cost EMI options. The e-commerce site has also segregated laptops into curriculum sections like – Humanities and Commerce, Engineering, Medical Studies, MBA, Design and Architecture, and even Gaming.

With respect to price, the cheapest laptop listed in the sale is the Lenovo Ideapad 15.6-inch laptop available in Black, and priced at Rs. 18,990. Amazon is offering up to Rs. 10,000 off on exchange with an old laptop, and the option to get additional two-year warranty worth Rs. 4,990 for Rs. 1,499.

Flipkart, on the other hand, is hosting its Back to College Sale from Tuesday, July 18 to Thursday, July 20. The e-commerce site is offering the HP Imprint Core i3 6th Gen Windows 10 Home running laptop for Rs. 35,964. There’s an exchange offer of up to Rs. 7,000 listed, along with a No Cost EMI option that begins from as low as Rs. 999 per month from banks like ICICI and Citibank for a period of 36 months.

Flipkart has segregated its sections based on price, and budget laptops start from as low as Rs. 9,999. This includes Acer, iBall, and Lava laptops, some of which also offer No Cost EMI options. The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 laptop is also listed with a price cut, up to Rs. 15,000 off on exchange, and No Cost EMI options. Laptop Ban Lifted in Egypt, Morocco

Egypt and Morocco’s airlines have said a ban against carry-on laptops on US-bound flights has been lifted, leaving only two Saudi airports under the restrictions put in place in March.

Morocco’s Royal Air Maroc said in a statement Wednesday that the ban, imposed amid fears the Islamic State group was developing a bomb concealed in electronics, would be lifted as of Thursday.

EgyptAir said late Tuesday that the United States had also lifted the ban for the carrier’s flights to New York from Wednesday.

The ban remains in place for Saudi Arabia’s two main international airports in Riyadh and Jeddah.

The original ban affected airports in Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Turkey.

But last month, the US Department of Homeland Security issued directives to 180 carriers around the world flying into the United States to improve security procedures, especially in screening baggage and electronics.

The directives included pressure to install explosive-detecting scanners within weeks, as well as adding more bomb-sniffing dogs.

As if tensions weren’t running high enough on flights already, soon you may not be able to carry on your laptop to binge watch your favorite series or catch up on work.

The Department of Homeland Security is considering a plan that would prohibit passengers from bringing large electronics into the cabin on flights from Europe to the U.S.

Here’s a gadget guide so you can keep working even if your laptop is checked into the hull.

Holder

Laptops are great because you don’t have to hold them up to work on them. There are plenty of smartphone or tablet stands on the market, but there are also holders to keep your device closer to eye level. A company called “Lockjaww” makes a clamp that holds onto your phone or tablet and latches onto the tray table in front of you. It costs $20 and has a four-star rating on Amazon.

Keyboards

The other major advantage that laptops have over phones and tablets is the keyboard. If you need to work on a document on a flight, you probably won’t want to have to rely on typing on a touchscreen. There are inexpensive bluetooth keyboards that connect to pretty much any device, like OMOTON’s Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard, which costs $14 and has a 4.5 star average on Amazon.

There are also slimmer, but more expensive, options like LG’s $34 rollable keyboard. The four rows of keys on the keyboard can literally be folded up, which makes it a fourth of the size and is easier to store in your carry-on. It also has a built-in dock, which you can set your smartphone or tablet into.

Cordless Headphones

If you’re setting up a mini work station from your airplane seat, you’ll probably want as few cords as possible. So it might be time to splurge on bluetooth headphones like Apple’s AirPods ($159) or Bragi’s The Headphone ($149). The AirPods’ batteries only last five hours, so if you’re flying across the Atlantic and want to listen continuously, you’ll need a backup pair. Or take a break and stretch while the AirPods charge — Apple (AAPL, Tech30) says 15 minutes should give your battery three hours of listening time.

Adapter

Apple famously got rid of the headphone port on the iPhone 7, and nowhere is this more aggravating than on long-haul lights. It means you can’t charge your phone and have headphones plugged in at the same time. So if you don’t have wireless earbuds and want to turn your phone into your workstation, you need to get a splitter.

There are a lot of options out there, but be careful because many have very poor reviews. Wofalodata makes a dual lightning adapter for iPhone 7/7 Plus, which costs $29 and has a four-star average on Amazon.

Battery

All of this will be useless if your phone or tablet dies. Since many economy seats still don’t have a USB port, consider investing in a solid portable battery charger. “mAh” (milliamp hour) is how most of these label how long the battery should last. A battery with 2000 mAh should power a device using 100 mAh for 20 hours. The Anker brand is consistently among the highest rated on Amazon. They start at $23 and promise to charge an iPhone 6 for 3.8 charges.

HP ProBook x360 Education Edition Is a Rugged 2-in-1 Laptop Aimed at Schools

HP has announced a new convertible laptop aimed just for schools. The company touts the new ProBook x360 Education Edition to be military standard certified to withstand accidental spills and drops by kids, and it is going to be made available worldwide on December 16.

The American tech company claims that the HP ProBook x360 Education Edition is the world’s thinnest, yet most rugged 2-in-1 laptop out there. It has a 360-degree hinge to rotate completely into a tablet, or even a tent stand for ease of viewing. Furthermore, there’s a dual camera system which uses a 1080p HD camera embedded in the keyboard to let users take video in tablet mode as well.

The 11-inch laptop runs on the latest Windows 10 Anniversary Update and is encased in hard, industrial rubber. The display features optional damage-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass to withstand drops. HP claims that its engineers put the HP ProBook x360 EE through rigorous testing to ensure that it fulfils the MIL-STD 810G standard. The test involved dropping several laptops from an elevation of up to 30 inches to ascertain it durability in school environments.

The keyboard has also been designed keeping in mind the target audience. It is meant to protect the laptop form spills of about 12 ounces of liquid, and the keys are made in a way that it cannot be picked at. It has an inbuilt ‘Take a Test’ app that introduces modern and secure methods of test-taking. There’s also an additional ‘Set up School PCs’ app so that the teacher can set up devices in three easy steps, even without professional help. It supports digital Pen writing as well, and HP will sell the Active Pen as an additional accessory.
Coming to the specifications, the HP ProBook x360 Education Edition features an 11.6-inch (1366×768 pixels) LED display, and is powered by Intel Celeron or Intel Pentium processor configurations. It offers 8GB of RAM, 64GB of inbuilt storage, and support for a microSD card slot. There are two USB 3.1 ports, one USB Type-C ports, one HDMI 1.4b port, one AC power connector, and one 3.5mm audio jack. The company claims that laptop can stay active for up to 11 hours of school activities and homework.

How to transfer music from laptop to an iPhone

There’re many advantages to Apple’s ecosystem. The synergy between the devices is unprecedented. Apple has “simplified” things so much that its products are considered to be easier to use. The products also come with a great ecosystem of accessories which makes owning them a fuss-free experience for most of the people.

However, Apple’s approach also adds some complexities. For example, one big problem for the iPhone users is management of their music collection. On the iPhone or iPad you can’t “cut, copy and  paste” files. Also, Apple owns the iTunes store and in order to avoid piracy it limits the user of an iPhone or iPad to a host PC or a Mac. So how does one transfer music from a laptop to an iPhone? For example you have 10 songs on your computer. You want them into your iPhone. It is an amazingly simple question, but the answer to it is a little complex.

The iTunes method

The iTunes method is what one must use to transfer music from a laptop, external hard-drive or pen drive to the iPhone. To do this, you need to follow these steps:

1- Download and install iTunes on your Windows PC. On a Mac, it will be pre-loaded. When you will open iTunes for the first time, it will scan your computer for all the music and media and add it to the iTunes library. If you have the music stored on an external drive, make sure that’s also connected to the computer. It will also download all the music you’ve bought from Apple once you log-in to your iTunes account if you have used it before to purchase music.

2- Connect your iPhone to the computer using the USB cable.

3- Open iTunes.

4- Locate and click on your device on the left side bar.

5- Click on the ‘Summary’ tab and scroll down to the Options section.

6- Click the box next to “Manually manage music and videos.”

7- Go to the ‘Music’ tab, check box next to sync music

8- Then click on either ‘entire library’ or ‘selected playlists, artists and genre’ which basically allows for manually selecting the songs that you want in the iPhone.

9- Click apply.

Using iTunes, you can also transfer music wirelessly to the iPhone. The process is quite straight forward and you have to follow the following steps.

1- Connect the iPhone to iTunes using USB cable so that the sharing is enabled between the two devices.

2- Ensure iPhone and your laptop which is running iTunes is on the same Wi-Fi network.

3- Open iTunes

4- Once iPhone is connected iTunes, in the summary tab check on the ”Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi’ tab.

5- Press “Apply”

6- The next time you open iTunes, you will be able to sync music wirelessly — no USB cable required — as long as both the laptop and iPhone are on the same Wi-Fi network.

In case you store music in a pen drive or an external hard disk, here is what you will need to do:

1- Select the “iTunes preferences” menu. On Windows you have to go to the tiny button on the top right corner. On OS X, you have to go to the iTunes icon on the top right.

2- Inside preferences you have to jump straight to the last tab (8th) called “Advanced”.

3- In the advanced tab, the first thing you will see ‘iTunes media folder location’. By default, its path will read something like ‘C:\\Users\Sahil\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media’. This is the folder you need to copy if you’re backing up your music.

4- In the case you’re trying to add music from an external drive you have to change the path. So if you’re music is on ‘D’ drive inside a folder called music all you need to is change the path to D:\\Music and you’re good to go.

Copy music using cloud storage

What if you have saved your music on cloud storage platforms like DropBox, OneDrive, or even Apple’s iCloud? In most cases you will be able to stream the music directly from the dedicated app of the service. In the case of iCloud, the music finds its way into the Music app on the iPhone by turning on a setting on the phone.

So here’s what you must do:

For iCloud

1- Enter the settings menu on the iPhone

2- Go to the iTunes and App Store settings and click the automatic downloads for the music. This will download all the music you have downloaded from the iTunes store on your iPhone. This works even if you made a purchase from a different device, using the same iTunes account.

3- Inside the setting menu, scroll down for the ‘music’ sub-menu and turn on iCloud Music Library which will either seek to merge your iCloud music with the one on your phone or completely replace the music on your phone with the one on iCloud. Opt for the option that is convenient to you.

For DropBox and OneDrive

1- Download the respective apps from the App Store

2- Supply your relevant account ID and password to the app

3- Click on the file to play the song. The app will stream it.

4- On OneDrive, on the bottom right corner, click on the contexual menu and click on open with another app option. This will download the file on the phone so that you can play the song using the standard Music app or third party apps like JukeBox.

5- If you have a lot of music on DropBox and you want to download the music on to the iPhone, then download a free app called JukeBox. Once you open the app, it will ask for your DropBox account details and scan and download all the files on the phone so that you can play them.

Third-party solutions

The way iOS is architected there is no file system that’s accessible to the user. So if you’re looking for the traditional drag and drop method, you can’t do it, unless you download a third party app. There are apps for both OSX and Windows. For Windows there is SharePod which can be bought for $20, while for OS X, there are solutions like iExplorer which costs $39 and Senuti which costs $19.
Basically, when an iPhone, iPod or iPad are connected to a PC or Mac which have either of these apps open, users can see the file system and drag and drop files.

SharePod

1- First connect your iPhone to the PC.

2- Then open SharePod, and it will start scanning for an Apple iOS device.

3- Then choose manually the files that you want to copy and click on the ‘Copy to Computer’ button.

iExplorer

1- Open iExporer on the Mac.

2- Connect your iPhone or iPad with the Mac.

3- If iTunes prompts you to sync with your computer, select no or cancel.

4- Select individual tracks using the command button on the Mac.

5- Drag and drop the files in the folder of your choice.
It is worth noting that we have not tested either iExplorer or SharePod, but these apps are believed to be very good at extracting data directly from an iPhone by opening up its file system.

Domestic mobile handset company Lava on Wednesday announced the launch of the 12.5-inch Helium 12 notebook, what it claims is the “widest screen and lightest notebook”. Lava has priced it at Rs. 12,999. The Helium 12 will be available in Silver and Gold colour variants at major e-commerce portals as well as multi-brand outlets across 14 cities.

Weighing 1.31kg, the Helium 12 marks the next entry into Lava’s notebook portfolio post the launch of Helium 14 a few months ago. It sports a 12.5-inch display with a 1366×768 pixels display. It’s Helium 12 is powered by Windows 10 Home and runs on an Intel Atom x5-Z8350 processor, with a clock speed up to 1.88GHz. The laptop has 2GB of DDR3 RAM.

The notebook features 10000mAh battery for prolonged usage. The Helium 12 has 32GB of inbuilt storage, expandable via SD card (up to 128GB). An HDD up to 1TB can also be added. The Helium 12 has VGA webcam with video-calling functionality. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0, 1xUSB 2.0, 1xUSB 3.0, and 3.5mm audio jack.
