Switzerland-based ProtonMail has officially released its VPN service, ProtonVPN, which includes a free tier for users apart from paid options. The new virtual private network (VPN) service comes from the provider of end-to-end encrypted email app, ProtonMail, which was made available last year to all on Android and iOS through an app. To recall, ProtonMail was developed by researchers at MIT and CERN.

As expected from a VPN service, the ProtonVPN is developed to let users browse the Web without being tracked as well as also bypass online censorship.

ProtonMail Co-Founder Andy Yen on the launch of new VPN service said, “In the past year, we have seen more and more challenges against Internet freedom, now more than ever, we need robust tools for defending privacy, security, and freedom online.”
ProtonVPN’s free tier offers servers in three countries, and allows usage on one device though bandwidth speed isn’t guaranteed. The Basic tier of the service has been priced at EUR 4 per month (and EUR 48 annual fee), and offers access to all ProtonVPN servers across 14 countries as well as high speed bandwidth. It also allows usage on two devices. The Plus tier has been priced at EUR 8 per month (EUR 96 annual fee), and offers features like high bandwidth, connection to up to five devices, access to Secure Core, and Tor servers. The ProtonVPN Visionary tier offers top tier features like up to 10 devices allowed, highest bandwidth on offer, secure core and tor server access, and ProtonMail Visionary included as an add-on. The Visionary tier has been priced at EUR 24 (or EUR 288 annual fee).

One of the biggest highlights of the ProtonVPN is its secure core architecture which the maker claims routes users connection through encrypted tunnels. “ProtonVPN’s advanced security features ensure that an attacker cannot eavesdrop on your connection. It also allows you to access websites that might be blocked in your country. This means an advanced adversary who can monitor the network traffic at the exit server will not be able to discover the true IP address of ProtonVPN users, nor match browsing activity to that IP,” says the maker.

ProtonMail reveals that the secure core servers for the ProtonVPN are located in hardened data centres in Switzerland, Iceland, and Sweden. ProtonVPN was being tested for few months ahead of final launch by the ProtonMail community consisting of over 10,000 members.

Apple Launches 2TB iCloud Storage Plan Ahead of iPhone 7 Event

Apple has introduced a new tier in its iCloud storage plans. Alongside the 1TB plan, the Cupertino giant has now introduced a 2TB plan for $19.99 per month as well. For Indian users, the new plan costs Rs. 1,300 per month.

This move comes just a week before the iPhone 7 launch event on September 7. Apple is heavily rumoured to unveil the new 256GB storage variant, and upping the iCloud storage plan seems certainly seems to be an associated strategic move.

Expanding to 2TB would follow the current iCloud storage pattern, as 9to5Mac notes. The former largest tier, 1TB, was roughly eight times as large as the top storage model – 128GB. With the bump up to 2TB of iCloud storage available to users, Apple appears to want to maintain the same ratio for the anticipated 256GB storage variant.

For users who are unaware, when you first sign up for iCloud storage, the first 5GB is free. After that, Apple offers plans for 50GB, 200GB, 1TB, and now 2TB as well. In the US, these plans cost $0.99, $2.99, $9.99, and $19.99 per month respectively. In India, these plans cost Rs. 65, Rs. 190, Rs. 650, and Rs. 1,300 per month respectively. For other countries.In any case, Apple is going to unveil the iPhone 7 with its new storage options next week. This year, Apple is sticking with minor changes and looks to break its tick-tock cycle. The camera on the 4.7-inch variant is pegged to get OIS, while the 5.5-inch variant is said to sport a new dual camera module. The company is ditching the 16GB base storage variant, in favour of 32GB. There’s also a Space Black variant that is expected to be introduced.

Nicola Sturgeon has challenged pupils across Scotland to read from a list of 100 books as part of a drive to improve literacy.

The First Minister’s Reading Challenge is designed to encourage children to read for pleasure and develop a life-long love of books.

The initiative is supported by the Scottish Book Trust, which will roll it out for primary four to seven pupils.

Reading standards among P4, P7 and S2 pupils have fallen in recent years.

The reading challenge aims to build on the work already taking place in schools to encourage children to read widely, explore a range of books and develop a love of reading.

The Scottish government said its list of 100 books had been selected by a panel of academics, experts and teachers.

Write reviews

It includes Ms Sturgeon’s favourite childhood book – Five On A Treasure Island – from Enid Blyton’s Famous Five series.

Children will be able to log their reading progress, with a range of prizes awarded in June next year, and will be encouraged to write reviews of the books they read.

The challenge was launched by Ms Sturgeon alongside pupils from South Morningside Primary School at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

She said: “Encouraging children to read for pleasure not only helps our young people develop vital language and literacy skills, but also opens up a whole new world of adventure and fun through the exciting and varied range of books suggested.

“Some of my happiest childhood memories involve immersing myself in stories so I’m pleased to have the opportunity to encourage young people to also experience the joy of reading for pleasure.”

The first minister was joined by author Alice Melvin, who said helping children to discover the joy of reading was “one of the best gifts you can give them”.

She added: “Reading allows children to explore their emotions, expand their horizons, develop their empathy and, above all, to lose themselves in the drama of a great story.”

In a move that is unlikely to come as a surprise to anyone, healthcare industry’s tech giant Philips has announced a range of smart products aimed at tracking your various health parameters. The range of products is designed to work in sync with the Philips’ HealthSuite app, which is currently available for both Android and iOS.

The range of devices announced by Philips is meant for home-use and includes a watch, a blood pressure monitor, a weighing scale that calculates body mass index as well as estimates fat level of user’s body, apart from an ear thermometer. The watch features an always on display with Gorilla Glass protection, and Philips is touting a 4-day battery life, with the watch gaining up to 70 percent charge in 30 minutes. It is water resistant up to 1 atmosphere of pressure.

The health watch launched by the company tracks the user’s activity, heart rate, and sleep patterns but doesn’t have a touchscreen that can show your phone’s notifications. The watch seems to lack some of the features that smartwatches usually offer and is meant solely for health-tracking purposes.

The blood pressure monitor is capable of measuring your diastolic and systolic blood pressure, as well as heart rate. There are two versions available, i.e. for wrist and arm, retailing for $89.99(roughly Rs. 6,000) and $99.99 (roughly Rs. 6,700) respectively.

The in-ear thermometer starts from $59.99 (roughly Rs. 4,000) while the weighing scale costs $99.99 (roughly Rs. 6,700).

Although the product lineup does not have any killer new features or extremely attractive prices, the reputation that Philips has in the health industry due to years of experience might very well help it overcome its competition and acquire a decent market share.

Just two months after launching its automated workflow tool Flow, Microsoft on Saturday, launched another alternative to IFTTT (If This Then That) named Conditional Action Programmer. Only this time, it is not as business-oriented as Flow, and you can even use your voice to tell CAP what you want it to do.

For those who are unaware of the term, IFTTT or If This Then That is a tool that connects several Web services and apps, and allows users to create workflows that perform a function if a certain condition is met.

Microsoft’s new alternative for IFTTT has been showcased for its use out of business world. The examples mentioned are the likes of “Text me the forecast every week” and “Save article to pocket”.

Notably, CAP is an experimental project from Microsoft Technology and Research, and is available as an app for Android via Google Play, as well as on the Web. It is linked with services like Office Pocket, SMS, Stocks, Weather, Office 365 email, and OneDrive for Business.

The most unique thing about CAP when compared with Flow is that it uses LUIS project to process natural language. In order to set an automated workflow, all you need to do is just give the command by speaking it aloud. The command is then interpreted and developed in to the conditions and the goal required for the workflow routine.

As the company has years of experience in voice recognition, thanks to Cortana, the service seems to be working fine according to reports.

However, website Neowin made an interesting observation that on signing up, Microsoft asks you to sign a disclaimer that mentions how some “data may be retained by Microsoft for up to 1 year for product improvement purposes.” People with privacy concerns might not be too willing to comply with this condition put forward by the company and choose to stay away from this offering
