LG
Apple began pioneering smartphone fingerprint sensors in its smartphones a few years ago, with the iPhone 5s. Since then, numerous manufacturers have introduced fingerprint sensors on their smartphones. Now, LG is doing the pioneering, and is touting its new fingerprint sensor that sits under the display. This means that when you will place your finger on the cover glass of the display, the under glass fingerprint sensor module would automatically identify your fingerprint.
Announced on Monday by LG Innotek CEO Jongseok Park, the under glass fingerprint sensor module will not only eliminate dedicated buttons, pads, or other elements for fingerprint recognition, but will also help make the smartphone more water resistant by reducing the number of openings. This might also result in slimmer devices in future.

LG Innotek says it has cut 0.01-inch (0.3mm) slot on the back of the cover display glass and has installed a fingerprint sensor in it with “supreme precision and combination technology.”
It has been mentioned that the fingerprint sensor module has a false acceptance rate (FAR) of 0.002 percent. LG adds that the adherence side of both the glass and the fingerprint sensor is 0.0098-inch (0.25mm) thick and can resist the impact of a 130 gram steel ball dropped from 7.9-inch.
“We are concentrating on all our resources to the development of the differentiated technology based on the creation of customer values. We will continue to provide convenient, safe, and pleasant user experiences by launching innovative product,” said Changhwan Kim, Head of Research and Development Centre LG.
LG has not yet revealed when exactly we would start seeing this technology in smartphones or other devices. However, this might happen soon as a company spokesperson has said to The Korea Times that it is in talks with some smartphone brands to commercialize the product within this year. “We are in talks with some handset manufacturers to commercialise the new modules within the year.” The company in December last year was tipped to supply Oled displays for upcoming iPhone models.
LG’s SmartThinQ Hub Blasts All Smartphone And Smart Home Appliance Notifications On A 3.5-Inch Screen
LG is taking the idea of a smart home pretty seriously.
The technology and appliance corporation has introduced its SmartThinQ Hub, which takes notifications from your connected smartphones and blasts them onto the device’s 3.5-inch color LCD screen to allow you to stay on top of your most-pressing appointments and reminders even if your smartphone is upstairs and the Hub is downstairs.
But LG’s SmartThinQ Hub doesn’t stop with smartphones. The device also syncs with smart-home appliances such as robovacs, air conditioning, washing machines and even LED lighting to keep you abreast of user notifications that they might generate as well. The same goes for IoTVs and connected cars as well.
Although the SmartThinQ Hub looks similar to the Amazon Echo, how each device functions sharply differs. That’s because, the Echo relies on audio cues, while the SmartThinQ Hub works off of connectivity and by syncing various smart devices — whether smart phones, home appliances or cars.
LG’s Hub also includes a built-in Bluetooth speaker, enabling the device to stream music. Gizmodo additionally reports that since the SmartThinQ Hub supports Wi-Fi and Zigbee, it won’t require users to have a home full of LG products for it to work. As long as smartphones and smart home appliances are able to pick up a connection signal to the SmartThinQ Hub, the notifications will work.
The SmartThinQ Hub will be available in black and gold, although LG hasn’t announced a price just yet.

LG opens up pre-orders of the V40 ThinQ in the US earlier than expected
The LG V40 ThinQ was unveiled two weeks ago and historically, the company has been opening up pre-orders a month after the announcement. This time around, however, LG says that the feedback from customers has led to the decision of launching the pre-orders sooner.
So now, the handset can be found in the US with a price tag of $949 ($920 at T-Mobile) at AT&T, T-Mobile, B&H Photo and Sprint. Unfortunately, only AT&T discloses shipment dates – between October 16 and 18, but we assume that the difference in shipment days between all carriers and stores will be negligible.
In the meantime, go check out our hands-on review to see if the V40 ThinQ deserves your hard-earned money.

LG Q8+ Spotted on Certification Sites, LG Q7 Android One Variant Tipped
LG launched the Q series last year with the Q6 variants, and unveiled the LG Q8 soon after. Now, the company is working on the Q8 successor, and we’ve come to know about this through a KCC (Korean Certification) and Wi-Fi Alliance listing. The LG Q8+ has been listed there in two variants, hinting that the smartphone is in the offing real soon, and may be launched in the Korean markets initially. The two variants have also been listed on the page that contains a list of devices that support Google Play, further confirming their arrival. In the meanwhile, an Android One variant of the LG Q7 has been tipped to arrive soon.
The LG Q8+ has been listed on KCC in two variants with model numbers – LM-Q815S and LM-Q815L. Both the variants have been approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance as well. Furthermore, the devices have also been spotted on the Google Play list of supported devices page as well, reports Nashville Chatter Class. All of this suggests that the LG Q8+ will be arriving soon in two variants. The Wi-Fi certification suggests that the LG Q8+ will support dual-band Wi-Fi, and run on Android Oreo out-of-the-box.
The LG Q8 was launched last year in the end of July as a stripped down version of the LG V20. We expect to see the LG Q8+ sometime around the same time, and whether it will be a striped down version of the LG V30 or not, remains to be seen.
Furthermore, LG may also be working on an LG Q7 Android One variant for T-Mobile users in the US. The yet to be announced LG Stylo 4 kernel source code reveals that the company is working on a smartphone with the codename cv5a. This is expected to be Android One variant of LG Q7 and it may also be exclusive to T-Mobile in the United States, reports XDA Developers. The smartphone’s name alongside the codename has been updated on Google’s list of Play certified devices. The report states that this T-Mobile Android One device is likely a carrier variant of the LG Q7.
Based on the source code information, the Android One LG Q7 is expected to run on Android 8.1 Oreo, have a 5.5-inch full-HD+ (1080×2160 pixels) 18:9 LCD display. It is tipped to be powered by the Snapdragon 450 SoC paired with 2GB or 3GB of RAM. Battery is expected to be a 3000mAh offering with Quick Charge 3.0 support, and connectivity options include USB Type-C and NFC.

LG G7 ThinQ With Snapdragon 845 SoC, 4GB RAM Spotted on Geekbench
While much about the LG G7 ThinQ had been revealed up until now, the next-generation LG flagship has now surfaced on Geekbench database to detail its key specifications. The benchmark listing also confirms top-notch scores of the smartphone that is arriving in New York on May 2. The latest revelations emerge just after LG confirmed the presence of a 6.1-inch QHD+ (1440×3120 pixels) LCD panel with brightness of 1,000 nits and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The handset is also expected to come with a notch design and a ‘Second Screen’ that debuted on the LG V20 in September 2016.
As per the Geekbench listing, the LG G7 ThinQ (model number LGE LM-G710) is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC that has eight processing cores with a base frequency of 1.7GHz, coupled with 4GB of RAM. The latter part puts a question mark on the performance part as most of the flagship devices nowadays come with at least 6GB of RAM – OnePlus flagships have been sporting 8GB RAM for over a year now.
However, despite low RAM capacity, the benchmarked LG G7 ThinQ received scores in line with the Snapdragon 845 SoC-powered Samsung Galaxy S9 variant. It garnered 2,312 single-core score and 8,979 multi-core score.
We need to wait for the official launch of the LG G7 ThinQ to see its real-life performance. But in the meantime, LG is also in the headlines for preparing the LG Q7 as the successor to its last year’s Q6. The smartphone was recently spotted on the FCC site with a couple of screenshots that hinted the presence of an 18:9 aspect ratio-featuring display. It is expected that the LG Q7 will join the launch of the LG G7 ThinQ next month.

LG Unveils ‘Software Upgrade Center’ to Offer ‘Faster, Timelier’ Updates for Smartphones
HIGHLIGHTS
- LG has launched a ‘Software Upgrade Center’ in South Korea
- The new facility is aimed to provide “faster, timelier” software updates
- LG G6 is the first model to receive an upgrade treatment from the center
LG on Thursday announced the launch of a ‘Software Upgrade Center’ office in South Korea that is specifically aimed at providing users with “faster, timelier” software updates. The new facility, which is located in LG’s new research and development campus in Magok-dong, western Seoul, will be responsible for developing and delivering regular OS updates and maintaining a consistent user experience across LG devices. At the initial stage, the company is set to utilise the resources of the facility to roll out Android Oreo for the LG G6. The update will debut in South Korea later this month, followed by other key markets.
To ensure a consistent user experience, the LG Software Upgrade Center will continuously test the stability and compatibility of hardware and software after updates. LG is planning to leverage the facility to roll out OS updates faster across all the countries where its smartphones are available. This means that the company is trying to build a model similar to Apple and Google that both are popular for releasing simultaneous updates worldwide for their handsets. Moreover, LG is evidently planning to separate itself from rival Android OEMs like Samsung, who are infamous for delaying software updates.
“Aligning after-sales support with customers’ needs is a top priority at LG,” said Jo Seong-jin, CEO of LG Electronics, in a statement while announcing the launch of the Software Upgrade Center. “Stable and consistent upgrades will demonstrate to our customers that LG smartphones have long and reliable lifespans.”
The launch of the Software Upgrade Center comes ahead of the LG G7 ThinQ that is slated to arrive on May 2 in New York, followed by a South Korean launch in Seoul on May 3. Furthermore, it premieres months after Google released Project Treble that has been designed to bring faster Android updates from smartphone makers. Under Project Treble, Google offers a new vendor interface that helps manufacturers push updates without waiting for chipmakers to send modified software. The architectural change is already a part of devices that come preloaded with Android Oreo.

LG V30 2018 Version Launch Set for MWC 2018, to Offer AI-Based Image Recognition
LG on Tuesday announced that it is set to launch the 2018 version of the original V30 flagship at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 in Barcelona, Spain. The announcement follows another from earlier this year, when the company said it would be abandoning its annual smartphone cycle, and only launch phones when needed, with a focus on new variants of its established G and V-Series of smartphones.
The new LG V30 smartphone, which entered the rumour mills as the LG V30s earlier, is touted to feature a suite of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies focusing on camera and voice recognition. The South Korean company has also announced the extension of its partnership with Google to integrate as many as 32 exclusive voice commands on the upcoming handset. The LG V30 was launched at IFA 2017 in August last year with a FullVision display and a dual rear camera setup to take on Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
After spending more than a year in researching how AI should be implemented in smartphones, LG in a statement said it had developed its Vision AI that is acclaimed as the next-generation image recognition technology. The proprietary technology is designed to analyse objects and recommend the best shooting mode from among eight preset modes, including portrait, food, pet, landscape, city, flower, sunrise, and sunset. It also considers the angle of view, colour, reflections, backlighting, and saturation levels by analysing images from a database to understand the camera’s focus in order to recommend the best setting. Moreover, LG has collaborated with a partner in image recognition to analyse over 100 million images to ultimately build its image recognition algorithms. The company also says that it has created over a thousand unique image categories to develop more accurate image analysis and offer better shooting mode recommendations to end users than ever before.
Apart from recognising images for enhanced results, LG claims that its Vision AI is designed to provide shopping advice. The technology scan QR codes, initiate an image search and even provide shopping options such as from where to purchase a particular item at the lowest price and other similar products available in the market.
On the hardware side, LG has confirmed that the new V30 version will come with a dual camera setup that will include wide-angle, low-distortion lenses. This hardware will jointly work with a preloaded low-light shooting mode to brighten images in dim environments by a factor of two, the company said. The in-house Vision AI technology is claimed to measure the brightness of the actual image to adjust brightness level more accurately than conventional methods that measure external light levels to brighten final shots.
The LG V30 was debuted with exclusive support for 23 voice commands. LG has extended that area by uplifting its Voice AI technology and is set to give 32 exclusive voice commands on the new V30 model. Users will just need to say “OK Google” and then a particular voice command to perform actions on the smartphone. There are new commands to use a list of fresh features, including Panoramic Photo, Food Photo, Time-lapse Photo and Video, Slow-motion Video, Low-light Photo, AI Cam Photo, Image Search, QR Code Scanning, and Shopping Search.
It is quite certain that most of the new AI-powered features will be limited to the next LG V30 model. However, LG has stated that some of the new features will also be landed on its existing smartphones via OTA (over-the-air) updates.
“Creating smarter smartphones will be our focus going forward, and we are confident that consumers will appreciate the advanced user experience with the enhanced V30 that many have been asking and waiting for,” said Ha Jeung-uk, Senior Vice President and Business Unit Leader, LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, in a press statement.
The next LG V30 model, which as we mentioned is in rumours as the LG V30s, was recently reported to sport up to 256GB of onboard storage. This is far more than the 64GB and 128GB storage versions of the LG V30 and LG V30+. The smartphone is also said to hit stores in South Korea sometime in the second week of March with a price tag of KRW 1 million (approximately Rs. 59,300) to compete against the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Besides, it is expected to come with a Snapdragon 845 SoC.
Last month, LG showcased its AI skills in televisions by unveiling the ThinQ AI brand at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 in Las Vegas. The company also integrated Google Assistant within the new TV models alongside its native Electronics Program Guide (EPG) to deliver a smarter experience.

LG G7 Said to Be on Schedule, Will Be Announced ‘When Time Is Right’
HIGHLIGHTS
- LG G7 release date is currently under consideration
- Company statement does specify timeline of G7 launch
- Smartphone was expected to be launched at the MWC 2018
LG has informed that the G7 smartphone is right on track. The company has reportedly said that there is no delay to the LG G7, and the release date is currently under consideration. The smartphone was expected to be launched at the MWC 2018, just like the LG G6 launch the previous year. However, several reports had recently suggested a potential delay in the launch of the handset, as the company was re-evaluating its mobile business strategy.
LG Electronics is on a mission to defray years of losses from its mobile division. Earlier, a report in local South Korean media had claimed that LG CEO and Vice-Chairman Jo Seong-jin had ordered a revision in the LG G7, aiming to review the product from scratch. Another report had claimed that the G7 smartphone team was told to halt recent work related to development.
Meanwhile, denying the rumours, LG told Engadget, “Some stories have reported that LG’s mobile division is delaying the release of the G7 in order to re-evaluate its performance and design. This is inaccurate. Preparations for the launch of the G6’s successor are on schedule.” The spokesperson also added that LG plans to focus on creating meaningful products instead of launching new products based on tradition or industry expectations. LG says it will launch its new flagship “when the time is right”. The statement in line with Seong-jin’s statement at the CES, where he said: “we will not launch it (LG G7) just because other rivals do”.
The statement hasn’t specified whether the G7 will be unveiled at MWC 2018 or not. But, since the event is less than a month away, it is expected that there will be a separate event for the launch.
Seong-jin had also mentioned earlier that LG Electronics might experiment with different model names. An earlier report had suggested a possible rebranding of smartphones at LG.
With growing speculations and rumours regarding the release date of the G6’s successor, it is expected that there will be a lot of expectations from the smartphone. However, it could also be a good move as LG’s plan to be the first mover last year by launching the LG G6 before the Samsung Galaxy S8, didn’t work out that well.
Based on previous rumours, the 2018 flagship from LG could sport an 18:9 aspect ratio display, with slimmer bezels than before. A dual camera setup is also speculated to be present on the handset. The smartphone is expected to be powered by the latest Snapdragon 845 processor, albeit after the Samsung Galaxy S9 that will be launched at MWC.
