Google, Consumer Affairs Ministry Partner on Online Consumer Protection

Aiming to raise awareness about online safety, Google India in collaboration with Ministry of Consumer Affairs on Saturday announced a nationwide ‘Digitally Safe Consumer’ campaign, as part of a larger effort to help better protect consumer interest online.

As part of this collaboration, Google along with the Department of Consumer Affairs will undertake a yearlong campaign focused on building capacities of consumer organisations, personnel of consumer affairs department and counsellors of National Consumer Helpline on Internet safety and related issues, a statement said in New Delhi.

“With the rapid increase in digitisation across all spheres, the message of internet safety needs to be integrated into the everyday tasks that the consumer undertakes online,” said Chetan Krishnaswamy, Country Head, Public Policy, Google India.

“This initiative will add to our existing campaigns guiding users to navigate the web and manage their digital lives safely and leverage the web to the fullest,” he added.

In order to provide training and information on online safety tools, Google with the help of partner agencies will work towards advocating digital security and privacy needs through ‘Digital Literacy, Safety & Security’ workshops through a ‘Train the Trainer’ model for approximately 500 people including 250 consumer organisations across the country, the statement said.
“These trainers will further engage with the local community to spread awareness around the need for Internet safety. The campaign expected to roll out in January, 2017 will reach out with training materials to over 1,200 consumer organisations as well as consumer affairs department of every state and Union Territories,” it added.

Google Toilet Locator to Reportedly Be Launched in Collaboration With Ministry of Urban Development

Have you ever been stuck in a situation where you are unable to locate a clean toilet near you? Well, Google may soon come to your aide in India. The search giant is said to launch a new feature dubbed ‘Toilet Locator’ which will be introduced in collaboration with the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD).

According to a new report, Google will start a pilot run of the new feature in the National Capital Region starting “some time from November 16 to November 30.” The feature will be integrated in to Google Maps and will let anyone search for a nearby toilet, just as one searches for any other place on the Maps app. The feature is reportedly being piloted under Government of India’s Swachhata Pakhwada, or Cleanliness Fortnight campaign.

A MoUD official claimed that the ministry “is already in the process of rolling out this facility in the NCR region” and it will include public restrooms that are located in metro stations, malls, petrol pumps, and hospitals.

Another official who asked not to be named suggested that the process to list the available toilets in the NCR region was “almost over.” One of the official explaining the process told IBTimes India, “People will first need to open Google Maps, and then search for toilets near them. They can search for a variety of keywords, like toilet, lavatory, swach, swachhata, shulabh or shauchalay, and Google will point them to the nearest toilets.” According to the report, the Toilet Locator will be depending on “heavily on crowdsourcing” and will see feedback from people. This means that people will be able to rate the cleanliness of the toilet they last searched via Google Maps, or even leave a review, just as they would for any other public establishment on Google Maps.

Unfortunately, there is no word when the ‘Toilet Locator’ will be available to users across India. Though, the MoUD official stressed that “Mechanisms are in place for the facility to be scaled up, and for it to reach all the 2,041 urban local bodies (ULBs) of the country.”
Notably, this is not the first such attempt to offer help to people via an app. Earlier this year, Delhi saw the launch of Find x Toilet app that helped locate a toilet nearest to one’s current location.

Over “emergency like situation” in Hyderabad University, NHRC sends notice to Education Ministry

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday raised its voice over the ongoing action taken against Hyderabad University students.

After taking suo motu cognizance of the media reports, NHRC  has issued notices to the Human Resource Development Ministry (HRD), the Hyderabad police commissioner and the Telangana government.

In a statement, NHRC said that a notice was sent after taking a note from “media reports that there is an emergency-like situation at the University of Hyderabad, and there is no water, electricity, food and Internet services, and the ATMs are out of order”.

“Reportedly, there is heavy police presence on the campus. The university students are under immense fear and trauma due to indiscriminate arrests of about 25 students and two faculty members,” said in the NHRC statement.

In addition to this, the Commission has issued notices to the ministry of human resource development, chief secretary, secretary, Telangana government, and the police commissioner of Hyderabad  and have asked them to give a report in this regard within one week’s time.

Also, the human rights state said, “No one can be deprived of the basic amenities like water, food and electricity by willful act of the State.”

So far, around 25 students and two faculty members have been detained after students and teachers protested against the return of Vice Chancellor Appa Rao.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Vice Chancellor Appa Rao, who was named in the First Information Report (FIR)  relating to the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula, has  joined the office again and took over all duties.

New Delhi: The government on Monday ruled out any plan to rank Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) in the country on lines of universities and colleges.

“No such proposal is under consideration at present to rank the Kendriya Vidyalayas,” minister of state for human resource development (HRD) Upendra Kushwaha said in response to a written question in Lok Sabha.

The HRD ministry was earlier mulling ranking its over 1,000 Kendriya Vidyalayas with an aim at improving the institutes by holding a competition among them on lines of its National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF).

The ministry officials had said last year that with a maximum 1,000 points, the KVs would be graded under four categories, with 80% and above (excellent) under A category, 60-79.9% (very good) in B category, 40- 59.9% (good) in C, and below 40% (average) in D.

It was suggested that over 1,000 KVs would be assessed under seven parameters, including academic performance, which will carry the highest weightage of 500 points, followed by school infrastructure (150 points) and school administration (120 points).

Flipkart Partners With Textiles Ministry to Give Online Marketing Platform to Weavers

Textiles Ministry Monday inked a pact with homegrown e-retailing major Flipkart to provide an online marketing platform to handloom weavers across the country, an initiative to boost the handloom sector, empower the weavers and uplift manufacturing in the country.

Responding to queries raised on choosing a particular company for the agreement, Textiles Secretary S K Panda said, “What we are starting now is only on a pilot basis, nobody is compelled to sell only to a particular agency. Our aim is to eliminate middlemen, assist the master weaver… After a period of 3 to 6 months we will go for bidding”.

Textiles Minister Santosh Gangwar, who was present on the occasion, emphasised that the focus of this association should be to help weavers and weaver entrepreneurs to produce products in tune with the buyer requirements and grow them significantly so that they may become manufacturers not only at a local but also at a national level.

Through this exclusive agreement, Flipkart will provide weavers in India an online marketing platform, infrastructural support in data analytics and customer acquisition to help them get remunerative prices for their products and scale up their business.

“This (MoU) will help us reach out to thousands of weavers across India… Through this initiative we are giving a direct platform to the weavers to reach out to the end-customers. There will be no middlemen. The customer will get access to variety of products across India. Flipkart will help them (weavers) to list on the marketplace,” Ankit Nagori, Vice President-Marketplace at Flipkart told PTI.

“We will charge weavers a 3 to 4 percent commission on sale. There will be no listing charge or any other thing. If a sale happens, then he (customer) will have to pay 3 to 4 percent commission on that sale. However, we will charge 15 percent commission from readymade garments suppliers,” he added.

“This kind of a coordinated effort has been planned and executed for the first time with Flipkart for handloom weavers which will bridge the missing linkages of market intelligence,

market access and logistics and help the Indian weavers in getting remunerative prices for their products,” the Textiles Ministry said.

The weavers will sell their products under their brand name and evolve as an entrepreneur selling his products directly to buyers across the country without stepping out of their workplace.

The Data analytics and market intelligence provided by Flipkart will help the weavers focus only on producing better saleable product ranges. This in turn will help them plan their production and inventory and expand their business.

“We are confident about the success of the programme and in 3 to 6 months time we would like to expand the programme.

For this initiative the first event is in September in Varanasi where we will invite weavers. Textiles Ministry will help us reach out to the weavers,” Nagori said.
