YouTube on Thursday said that it will start showing Indian users more local language content in the Home and Trending tabs. The change in displayed content will start rolling out for all users from Thursday itself, and users will not need to adjust any settings.
The Google-owned video sharing platform in a press statement said that it will automatically identify the user’s preferred Indic language, based on the user’s watch history, user interface language, and location. Languages include Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu.
In case YouTube identifies the wrong language for users, they can change their language setting from the bottom of the page on desktop. On the Android and iOS mobile apps, language settings are based on the device settings. YouTube adds that users can alternatively also just watch more videos in their language, and it “will gradually correct itself.”
The company says that thanks to the move, users will see more local language content in the Home tab such as movies and music, especially if they are first time users. The Trending section will show videos that are popular with other users with similar language preferences.
“We are excited to help more Indians find content in their local languages, especially those who are coming online for the first time. We hope this will make their experience even more engaging and relevant. We’re equally excited to help regional content creators reach audiences in their local languages more quickly,” YouTube said in its statement.

More than 1,000 schools found to be ‘spying’ on children’s internet use
More than 1,000 UK schools are using software that βforcesβ staff to spy on pupils as they work on their computers, privacy campaigners have warned.
The programme can be used by schools to monitor pupilsβ internet activities, but also access their web history, block certain websites and monitor what they are typing.
The technology aims to protect children from grooming and stop them from accessing adult websites, the Daily Mail reported.
In some cases, however, schools have installed the programme without making families aware, prompting concerns that the extreme level of monitoring and filtering online content may go βtoo farβ.
Figures obtained by civil liberties group Big Brother Watch show that of 1,420 secondary schools in England and Wales which provided data, 1,000 admitted to using the spying software.
The schools have spent some Β£2.5m on the software, and installed it on a total of 832,386 computers, laptops and mobile devices.
Of the 1,000 schools questioned, one in six were able to provide details of acceptable use policies, with just 26 able to give information about the type of software and how it was used.
In its report, Big Brother Watch said that schools often consider buying the software in order to keep pupils safe online, or to protect them from potential radicalisation.
But, campaigners added: βWe are concerned that the use of technology which allows real time monitoring is placing teachers unwittingly in the position of being Big Brother.
βForcing staff to oversee their pupilsβ every digital move represents a fundamental shift from the traditional method of overseeing pupils by engaging with them from the front of the class.
βSchools currently offer little explanation about the use of the software in their acceptable use policies.
βPupils and parents, who have to sign such policies to say they agree to the use of the software, are therefore left completely in the dark.β
The understanding that teachers are able to βspyβ on pupil activity comes amid wider concerns raised over pupil data protection issues in schools.
Big Brother Watch urged that use of the software in conjunction with school CCTV and biometric systems risks “normalising” children to surveillance.
Malcolm Trobe, interim general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: βComputer monitoring software is used in schools to safeguard the welfare of children and young people by ensuring that they are not exposed to damaging online material.
βThere is no secrecy about the use of this sort of software in schools. Pupils are very much aware of rules about computer use and most schools have policies which are available to parents.β

Google Assistant Gets IFTTT Support; Makes Voice Commands on Pixel, Google Home More Powerful
Google unveiled its smart home speaker called Google Home at its Made by Google event on October 4. The speaker, like the Google Pixel smartphones, is powered by the Google Assistant. At the time of launch, Google Home did not have many integrations to work with, but that should change when the Assistant SDK becomes available. Now however, IFTTT has rolled out the Google Assistant channel, bringing hundreds of new products and services the voice-based virtual assistant can interact with, be it from Google Home or a Pixel smartphone.
Users can now create ‘recipes’ to IFTTT to connect Google Assistant with a number of products and services, like Facebook, Philips Hue etc. IFTTT is a web automation service that works on the principle of If This, Then That – a fancy name for the simple If-Then loops used in algorithms that anyone with basic programming knowledge would understand. If a certain condition is met, a certain action will be carried out. These are also called recipes. It connects to a number of other Internet services as well as apps (via the IF apps for Android and iOS) like Gmail, Facebook, Instagram etc. to allow users to form some chains of simple commands. It then operates the first command if the condition is met as per the instructions given by the user. The company touts integrations with as many as 376 services.
To add IFTTT integration to their Pixel smartphone or Google Home speaker, users will need to go to www.ifttt.com/google_assistant and connect their associated Google account. IFTTT has detailed some of the recipes that will be supported by Google Assistant – you can add a task to Todoist by your voice, ask Philips to change the lighting of the room, post to Facebook and Twitter through your voice, send a Slack message, or add a contact on Google. A very crucial feature to locate your smartphone is also supported by IFTTT. You can read the entire set of commands on IFTTT’s website.
To recall, Google Home is still in infancy with only a few partners like Philips Hue and Samsung SmartThings to allow users to seamlessly use their voice for multiple actions. Google Home is slated to go on sale in upcoming weeks.

Ethnic-minority pupils ‘more likely to attend grammars than white children with same Sats scores’
Ethnic-minority pupils in four selective areas are more likely to attend a grammar school than white British pupils with the same key stage 2 test scores, data analystΒ Education Datalab reports in a new blog.
The analysis of test results from 2010 to 2015Β comes after a ResPublica thinktank reportΒ said that of all pupils with disadvantaged backgrounds, white British children were least likely to do well in school. It recommended that new grammars were focused on the needs of white working-class children.
Rebecca Allen, director of Education Datalab, looked at the numberΒ ofΒ high-achieving 11-year-olds, from different ethnic groups, attendingΒ grammar schoolsΒ βΒ the vast majority of whomΒ had passed the 11-plus. SheΒ compared how they performed at key stage 2.
The analysis usedΒ pupils’Β βfine grade scoresβ in the Sats tests,Β a measure created by the non-profit company FFT, which provides detailed data to schools on how their pupils are performing.
The study found that just 29 per cent of the white British pupils in Kent, Medway, Buckinghamshire and Lincolnshire who achieved a fine grade score of five, went on to grammar school β compared with 56 per cent of Asian, 61 per cent of black and 44 per cent of “other”Β ethnic minority children.
The ‘private tutor effect’?
There is little research on why ethnic-minority groups are so successful at passing the 11-plus test, she added, but some research has found that ethnic-minority groups are more likely to use private tutors.
Β βUnderstanding the reasons for these disparities might help us understand whether there are policy interventions to support those ethnic groups who are less successful in gaining access,β Dr Allen writes.
βBut while the idea of discounting the 11-plus qualifying score to help free school meal pupils access grammars is now broadly accepted as an idea, discounting to help white British students gain access would surely be more controversial.β

Town halls are better at raising education standards than government-appointed officials, the body representing local councils has said.
Almost nine out ofΒ 10 council-run primaries and secondaries in England are rated as “good” or “outstanding” β more than than academies or free schools, according to the Local Government Association (LGA).
In a new report, the LGA argues that the RSC system lacks the capacity and capability to oversee increasing numbers of schools as the government pushes ahead with plans for all schools to take on academy status.
These commissioners are already responsible for almost a quarter of schools in England β about 5,000 in total, the report says, with each of the eight working with nearly 100 that are judged to be failing or require improvement.
Local authorities perform better in school improvement, the reportΒ claims, with 89 per centΒ of council-run primaries and secondaries judged at least “good” by Ofsted.
A similar proportion of so-called converter academies β those that have converted to academy status β (88.5 per cent) are rated as “good” or “outstanding”, along with 62 per centΒ of sponsored academies and 82 per centΒ of free schools.
Richard Watts, chair of the LGA’s children and young people board, said:Β “Local councils have consistently proven themselves to be more effective at raising school standards than RSCs and this is no surprise.
“Each council is working with fewer schools, who they have good, longstanding relationships with, and they know what’s needed in their local areas.
“It is simply asking too much to expect RSCs to effectively turn around dozens of schools across a huge area.
“Placing more and more power in the hands of few unelected civil servants, who parents cannot hold to account at the ballot box, is out of sync with the government’s aims to devolve more decision-making and responsibility down to local areas and communities.
“With the government planning to end councils’ role in supporting school improvement and intervening in failing schools from next year, we have yet to be convinced that RSCs have the track record or the capacity to take on responsibility for another 13,000 schools.
“We would urge the government to re-consider its plans for full academisation and to focus on working with councils to ensure all our children get the excellent education they deserve.”
A Department for Education spokesperson said the claims were “nonsense” and the figures were “misleading”.
She added: “It is inevitable that councils oversee a higher proportion of ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ schools as failing schools are taken out of council control and converted to academies, where after being paired with a strong sponsor they stand the best chance of breaking from their often long histories of underperformance.
βAll academies operate under a strict accountability system β more robust than in council-run schools. Regional Schools Commissioners are an important part of that system and thanks to their oversight where issues are identified we will not hesitate to take swift action, something that the council-run system would fail to tackle for years.β
