Nokia 8 Price Leaked; Launch Date Said Tipped to Be Just 2 Weeks Away

Nokia 8, and not Nokia 9, is expected to be the true Nokia Android flagship if reports are to be believed, and it seems the device’s launch is not too far away. Now, a fresh leak hints that the Nokia 8, which has been leaked multiple times over the past few weeks, will be launched as soon as July 31. Along with this, the Nokia 8 price, colour options, and some specification details have also been leaked, giving us comprehensive details about the upcoming flagship. With this launch, the HMD Global-owned brand will be able to compete better with the likes of Apple and Samsung, though the competition will only get tougher as Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and iPhone 8 hit the market in the next few months.

Nokia 8 price, launch date, specifications

The latest information comes from German site WinFuture, and claims that the Nokia 8 will be priced at EUR 589 (roughly Rs. 43,400). This is still not as expensive as the Apple and Samsung flagships, but does fall comfortably in the premium price bracket. It is also lower than the earlier tipped price of EUR 749 (roughly Rs. 55,300), while the India price was tipped to be at Rs. 44,999. Also, the report claims that the smartphone will be launched this month itself – on July 31. That’s just two weeks from now, and if this information is true, all information about pricing, specs, and availability in different regions will be out soon.

The report states that Nokia 8 will launch with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage initially, though the rumoured 6GB RAM and 8GB RAM variant may see the light of the day a little bit later. Lastly, at launch, the Nokia 8 will be available in four colour options – Blue, Steel, Gold/Blue, and Gold/Copper. These colour options might be named a bit more creatively on launch day.

Past leaks suggest that the Nokia 8 will sport a bezel-less design, a USB Type-C port and dual speakers at the bottom edge of the smartphone. At the back, it will sport a thin vertical camera strip, or a dual camera setup. The smartphone is also tipped to sport an iris scanner, be IP68 water resistant, support dual-SIM slots, and a fingerprint scanner as well.

The smartphone is expected to feature a 5.3-inch QHD display, will be powered by the Snapdragon 835 SoC, will sport a 13-megapixel dual camera setup at the back and a 13-megapixel front camera as well. The dimensions are expected to be at 151.55×73.7mm.

HMD Global launched its trio of Nokia Android smartphones earlier this year and today, the Nokia 5 is available for pre-bookings across various cities like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Calicut. The Nokia 5 is priced at Rs. 12,899 and will be available exclusively via offline retail. The Nokia 3 went on sale late last month, which only leaves the Nokia 6 which is all set for July 16 release, which will be exclusively available through Amazon India.

The Nokia 5 comes with a fingerprint scanner mounted on the home button and sports a 5.2-inch HD (720×1280 pixel) display. It runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC coupled with 2GB of RAM. It comes with 16GB of inbuilt storage, which is expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB). Nokia 5 packs a 13-megapixel camera on the back along with a flashlight and while an 8-megapixel sensor sits at the front.

Samsung Galaxy On Max launched as Flipkart exclusive
Samsung has launched a new mainstream smartphone called the Galaxy On Max, which is priced at Rs. 16,900 and will be exclusive to Flipkart. Some of the highlights include the presence of 4GB RAM, a 5.7-inch full-HD display, front flash, large aperture cameras, and support for Samsung Pay Mini. The Samsung Galaxy On Max doesn’t have an exact release date yet, and it’s just listed as ‘coming soon’ on Flipkart. It’s powered by a MediaTek MTK P25 SoC, 4GB of RAM and features a 13-megapixel rear camera.

OnePlus 5 camera gets DxO score of 87
The camera setup on the OnePlus 5 (Review) is its defining feature but when we tested it in our camera comparison, it didn’t quite stand up to other flagships like the Google Pixel and the Samsung Galaxy S8+. Our findings are now backed up by popular photography benchmark, DxOMark’s findings too, who have awarded the OnePlus 5 a score of 87. This puts it behind the Galaxy S8, Google Pixel and even the recent HTC U11. We guess its back to the drawing board for OnePlus.

Nubia M2 with dual cameras launched in India
Dual rear cameras is definitely a new trend in the smartphone space as Nubia has just launched a new model called the Nubia M2 in India, at Rs. 22,999. This phone will be exclusively available via Amazon India and will be made available exclusively for Amazon Prime members during the Prime Day Sale starting from July 10. The Nubia M2 features two 13-megapixel Sony CMOS sensors, a 5.5-inch full-HD display and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC.

Vivo X9s, Vivo X9s Plus with dual selfie cameras launched
Vivo, a popular Chinese smartphone manufacturer in India, has just launched two new smartphones – the Vivo X9s and the Vivo X9s Plus in China. The big highlight of both the smartphones are their dual selfie camera setups and the fact that they run on a custom ROM based on Android 7.1 Nougat. Prices for the Vivo X9s and the X9s Plus are 2,698 (roughly Rs. 25,600) and CNY 2,998 (roughly Rs. 28,500), respectively. It’s only a matter of time till they find their way to our shores.

Microsoft’s White Space project in trouble
Google’s free Wi-Fi project and Facebook’s recent Express Wifi project has helped millions of Indians get online for free. However, Microsoft’s White Space initiative, which uses the unused TV spectrum to beam Internet-carrying signals to several villages across India, has been in the works for three years now and is yet to take off. The company had pledged to bring affordable Internet connectivity to over 500,000 villages in the country in 2015. The company piloted the project in Harisal earlier this year but stopped it in a few months after the government refused to renew the spectrum band for commercial deployment, according to a report.

Xiaomi’s record quarter, MIUI 9 to launch before August 16 
Xiaomi’s custom Android skin is due for another major version bump, which brings it to MIUI 9. The company claimed its under development and is slated to arrive before August 16, as confirmed by a  forum post. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun had mentioned earlier that MIUI 9 will be more fluid and powerful than previous versions and will feature split-screen mode and the picture-in-picture mode as some of the new features.

In more Xiaomi news, CEO Lei Jun confirms that the company has managed to ship 23.16 million smartphones in Q2 2017, which is a 70 percent increase from the previous quarter, marking a record high for quarterly smartphone shipments in the company’s life span. Jun also stated that revenue in India in the first half of the year is up 328 percent year-on-year.

#HelloMotoWorld event scheduled for July 25
Lenovo is gearing up to add more smartphones to its Moto lineup as it has started sending our invites for an event scheduled for July 25 in New York city. We have no idea what devices are are to be expected as the invite doesn’t really reveal much however, if we were to hazard a guess then we could see the Moto X4 smartphone being unveiled. Guess we’ll know in a few weeks time.

iPhone 8 facing 3D NAND storage chip shortage
There’s a lot of pressure on Apple for it’s next iteration of the iPhone and a new report suggests that Apple might turn to Samsung to help out with supplying 3D NAND chips for storage on the new phones. 3D NAND is still a new technology and Apple’s suppliers have reportedly failed to meet the demand for this year’s batch. With Samsung rumoured to be readying the Galaxy Note 8 too, Apple cannot afford to have any supply bottlenecks especially considering it’s the 10th anniversary for the iPhone.

RBI limits customer liability in online banking fraud
The  Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has laid out norms that essentially limit customer liability in the event of online banking fraud. The new norm directs banks to credit the amount involved in the unauthorised electronic transaction within 10 working days to the account holder. Banks may also at their discretion decide to waive off any customer liability in case of unauthorised electronic banking transactions even in cases of customer negligence.

LeEco founder Jia Yueting resigns as chairman
Chinese billionaire and founder of LeEco, has resigned as chairman of its main listed unit on Thursday. Leshi Internet Information & Technology Corp Beijing said that Jia Yueting will remain controlling shareholder without any role, having resigned as chief executive in May to focus on the electric car business, of which he will now become chairman.

Qualcomm files patent infringement lawsuit against Apple
Chip maker Qualcomm has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple for unlawful and unfair use of the chipmaker’s technology. Qualcomm is requesting a ban on the importation of some iPhones, due to this. “Qualcomm’s inventions are at the heart of every iPhone and extend well beyond modem technologies or cellular standards,” said Don Rosenberg, executive vice president and general counsel of Qualcomm.

After some teasing back in February, Smartron has launched the srt.phone which is inspired by the “dependability” of Sachin Tendulkar himself. It has been launched in two storage variants in India, available exclusively from Flipkart from Wednesday itself, in a Titanium Grey colour variant. The 32GB variant priced at Rs. 12,999, and the 64GB variant priced at Rs. 13,999. Launch offers include a Rs. 1,500 discount when you exchange your old phone, free Sachin Tendulkar-design back covers worth Rs. 599, and free extended Smartron t.care warranty worth Rs. 1,499. Axis Bank Buzz credit card holders get an additional 5 percent cashback.

The Smartron Sachin Tendulkar phone runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat and sports a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) display. It’s powered by a Snapdragon 652 SoC that’s coupled with 4GB of RAM. For optics, srt.phone rear camera sports a 13-megapixel sensor with PDAF, a dual-LED flash, and an f/2.0 aperture, while a 5-megapixel wide-angle lens camera is in the front.

Smartron also says one Android security update will be provided every quarter, while at least three major updates will be released for the Sachin Tendulkar phone. The Flipkart listing is touting an Android O update will be available for the smartphone.

Nokia flagship Android phone leak hints at Snapdragon 835 SoC
HMD Global has so far launched the Nokia 6, Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 3310 (2017) and now, a fresh report sheds light on the rumoured flagship could potentially shape up to be. MyDrivers reports that the Nokia flagship will sport a metal jacket, but doesn’t dive any further into design details apart from that. The Nokia flagship Android phone has earlier been rumoured to sport a Snapdragon 835, 4GB or 6GB of RAM and a 23-megapixel sensor. The name of the device has not been revealed, but it is expected to launch sometime in June.

WhatsApp for Android gets separate video calling button
WhatsApp has quietly released a new stable update for Android users that brings some tweaks to the UI, most notably, a new video call button and the relocation of the attachment button. The new additions to WhatsApp were first reported earlier in March when they showed up for beta users (v2.17.93). The new tweaks don’t scream out change, but are minimalistic in nature, similar to Google’s Material Design philosophy that is being tried out for YouTube.

Microsoft Windows 10 S, Surface laptop launched
At an event in New York on Tuesday, Microsoft introduced Windows 10 S as a simpler, more secure operating system meant for students. Software for this OS is tied to the Windows Store, which means students can only run apps downloaded from the Store. According to Microsoft, Windows 10 S is built from the ground up keeping in mind classrooms and since students can only download apps from the Store, chances of being exposed to potentially dangerous apps are slimmer.

Microsoft’s hardware partners like HP and Acer will be the first ones to launch laptops running the new OS. The HP ProBook x360 eEducation Edition and Acer TravelMate Spin B1 will be the new models and will carry a price tag of $299 (roughly Rs. 19,200).

Alongside the new OS, the company also announced the Surface Laptop, that will start shipping on June 15, starting at $999 (roughly Rs. 64,000). It sports a 13.5-inch PixelSense touchscreen display with 1080p resolution and base specs of an Intel Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. The biggest highlight is that the Surface laptop is rated to offer up to 14.5 hours of battery life. Complementing this launch, Microsoft also launched an updated Arc Touch Mouse called Surface Arc Mouse.

Last but not least, Microsoft also announced a full-featured version of its desktop Office 365 application for education, which is coming to the Windows Store. The Office 365 for education suite of apps is free for all students and teachers – and it includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams, and other classroom tools.

Apple India has ‘record’ March quarter
Apple announced its results for the January to March quarter on Tuesday and the company had plenty to cheer about its performance in India. “We set a new March quarter record for India, where revenue grew by strong double digits,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said . Apple’s Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Luca Maestri later added that India was one of the markets where Apple’s quarterly revenue grew by “over 20 percent”.

However, the company also reported a surprise fall in iPhone sales for its second quarter on Tuesday, indicating that customers may have held back purchases in anticipation of the 10th-anniversary edition of the company’s most important product later this year.

Jelly, ‘world’s smallest 4G Android smartphone’, launched 
A very interesting smartphone has made its way on KickStarter looking for crowd funding, simply called Jelly. This mini-sized smartphone supports Android 7.0 Nougat, dual-SIM (Nano+Nano), and 4G connectivity. Manufactured by Shanghai firm Unihertz, it claims to be the “smallest 4G Android smartphone” in the world. The Jelly with 1GB RAM/ 8GB Storage is priced at $109 (roughly Rs. 6,900) and the Jelly Pro with 2GB RAM/16GB storage is priced at $125 (roughly Rs. 8,000).

Apple iPhone 8 slated to arrive in 2018?
So far, the anniversary edition of the iPhone is expected to come with augmented reality features, new Touch ID tech, OLED display, and edge-to-edge panel design, and much more. Because of all these new additions, there have been several alleged production issues reported that may cause a delay in the release of the iPhone 8. The note obtained by Business Insider cites supply chain sources to suggest that “key component shortages and technical challenges could delay the release of a high-end iPhone 8 device this fall.”

Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC set to launch on May 9 
Chipset maker Qualcomm has sent out press invites for an event in China on May 9, where it is set to launch the much-talked about Snapdragon 660 SoC. The Snapdragon 660 SoC may have custom Kryo cores just like on Snapdragon 820 or might use a combination of four Cortex-A73 CPUs clocked at 2.2GHZ and four Cortex-A53 CPUs clocked at 1.9GHz. The GPU tagged with the SoC will be an Adreno 512. It’s expected  to go into mass production in second quarter of 2017 and is expected to power phones from Oppo and Vivo.

Sony PlayStation 5 could launch in 2018
The PlayStation 5, PS5 or whatever Sony calls its next console may release sooner than you think. According to Macquarie Capital Securities analyst Damian Thong the PS5 could be out before the end of 2018. His prediction was cited in a Wall Street Journal report on Sony’s recent financial earnings wherein it came to light that the company shipped 60 million PS4s. If so, it fuels speculation that Sony could show off new hardware at E3 2017.

Facebook Messenger ‘Instant Games’ now rolling out
Facebook announced that it is rolling out Instant Games on Messenger and that it is introducing the new features that the social media networking giant previewed to developers at its F8 conference last month. The updated Instant Games on Messenger will be rolling out over the next few weeks worldwide for both Android and iOS mobile platforms.

HTC U 11 video teaser reveals design details
HTC’s ‘squeezable smartphone’ is making headlines every day, and now, a fresh teaser from HTC brings more design details of what is expected to be called the HTC U 11, ahead of its May 16 launch in Taiwan. The teaser video has the date and its tagline ‘Squeeze the Brilliant U’, with a blue smartphone taking shape with a thin sleek frame, and metal edges, where the sensors are expected to be located. The phone’s logo at the back is revealed, however the small video refrains from giving us a full-blown look at the device.

Nokia to announce up to 5 new devices in 2017

Mobile World Congress in February is the place-to-be for all major players in the mobile industry (except for Apple, that is) and that’s exactly the stage HMD Global will use to try and start the Nokia fightback.

Sources report that at least four new devices will be revealed next year along with the already leaked Nokia D1C that we told you about last month.

The devices will feature between 5″ and 5.7″ displays with WQHD or FHD resolutions. Sadly there’s info only regarding D1C and it says that the device will come in two different options – one priced at about $200 with 3 GB RAM and 5.5” display and a cheaper $150 version with 2GB RAM and 5” FullHD display.

Such specs clearly aren’t near flagship-worthy, so HMD Global either has another ace up its sleeve or it plans on testing the water with some mid-range offerings before going for the premium tiers.

Nokia 8 gets Android Pie beta, complete with the new gesture navigation

The Nokia 8 was supposed to be updated to Android 9 Pie in November, but there was an unforeseen delay. It’s getting closer, though, and HMD can use your help with the final touches – it released a beta version of the update.

You need to join Nokia Beta Labs if you want to participate. And make sure to back up your data first, since although rolling back to 8.1 Oreo is possible, it wipes the storage.

Pie-style navigation gestures are enabled, but those don’t mix well with the hardware buttons below the screen – it makes the smallish screen seem even smaller.

Nokia 7.1 with HDR-10 display and Android 9 launched in India

HMD has launched the Nokia 7.1 in India. The phone is priced at INR 19,999 ($287) and will be available across all major outlets and Nokia website starting December 7.

Airtel subscribers will get additional data on select plans upon purchasing the phone. HDFC Bank customers will get special cashback offers when purchasing on EMI.

The Nokia 7.1 is Nokia’s latest mid-range smartphone. It has a 5.84-inch FHD+ display with HDR-10 support, a first for a device in this class. The phone runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB expandable storage.

On the back is a dual camera with a 12MP f1.8 primary camera with dual-pixel autofocus and a 5MP depth sensor. The primary camera uses Zeiss optics. On the front is a 8MP f2.0 shooter. The battery on the Nokia 7.1 is a 3060mAh and supports fast charging.

Nokia 8.1 inching closer to launch, NCC report from Taiwan says so

The Nokia 8.1 was first spotted on Geekbench a few weeks ago giving out some of the specs, including the Snapdragon 710 chipset. The new NCC filing from Taiwan might suggest we are looking at imminent launch.

The report lists a Nokia device with model number TA-1119 but as always, doesn’t disclose anything specific about the device itself. That’s TENAA specialty.

Anyway, rumor has it the device will sport a notch, a rear-mounted fingerprint reader and will run Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. Still, the Nokia 8.1 remains pretty secretive so we have to wait a little bit longer for more details to pile up.

Android 9 Pie beta is now out for the Nokia 6.1 Plus

Today Nokia has made the first beta of Android 9 Pie available for the 6.1 Plus. This has been officially announced on Twitter by Juho Sarvikas, HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer.

If you want to give it a try, you’ll need to head to Nokia Beta Labs and grab the update from there. Obviously since this is a beta you should expect to see bugs, things may not run very smoothly at this stage. So it usually isn’t advisable to install such a release on your main phone, but in the end it all depends on how patient you are and how much of a tolerance to issues you have.

Either way, the finalized Android 9 Pie update for the Nokia 6.1 Plus should be out in a few weeks, and become available to all of the units ever sold.

Nokia X6 Global Variant to Launch in Hong Kong on July 19: Report

Nokia X6 is set to hit the global market, and the global rollout is expected to begin with Hong Kong. The handset, which debuted in China in May, is reportedly launching in the Hong Kong market on July 19. The fresh development comes weeks after the anticipation of the global launch of the Nokia X6 that features a display notch and includes a Face Unlock feature to rival the likes of the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. Last month, the handset surfaced on the official Nokia site in India.

Folks at Mobile Magazine HK report the Nokia X6 will come to Hong Kong as the Nokia 6.1 Plus. Despite the change in its name, the handset is said to have the same design and hardware that was originally launched in China. This means that the new model will have a 5.8-inch display with a notch design and an octa-core Snapdragon 636 SoC under the hood. However, some changes are likely to be available on the software front as the upcoming handset is rumoured to come under Google’s Android Oneprogramme – just like the Nokia 6 (2018) that was unveiled at MWC 2018 back in February. It is also expected to run stock Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. The Nokia X6 in China, in contrast, runs Android Oreo with a custom interface on top.

Having said that, it hasn’t been revealed whether HMD Global, the licensee of the Nokia brand for phones, in plans to launch the Nokia 6.1 Plus across the global markets following its arrival in Hong Kong. The price of the rumoured handset is also yet to be surfaced. Nevertheless, we can safely assume that some formal details on the global variant of the Nokia X6 will emerge at the launch of the Nokia 6.1 Plus later this month.

Previously, HMD Global CPO Juho Sarvikas hosted a Twitter poll to understand the demand for the new smartphone in markets other than China. Furthermore, the global variant of the Nokia X6 allegedly received Taiwan’s NCC certification last month.

Nokia X6 specifications

To recall, the dual-SIM (Nano) Nokia X6 runs Android 8.1 Oreo and features a 5.8-inch full-HD+ (1080×2280 pixels) display. It is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 636 SoC, coupled with up to 6GB of RAM, and 64GB of onboard storage that is expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB). There is a dual rear camera setup that comprises a 16-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel monochrome sensor along with an f/2.0 aperture and an LED flash. On the front, there is a 16-megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 aperture. The smartphone has Bothie feature to let users capture images from its front and rear camera sensors simultaneously. It also comes preloaded with a Face Unlock feature. Besides, the model packs a 3060mAh battery.

Nokia 2 Android 8.1 Oreo Beta Update Now Available, Announces HMD Global

HMD Global, the licensee the Nokia mobile brand, back in May 2018 at its product launch event promised an Android 8.1 Oreo update for its affordable Nokia 2 handset. Now, the Finnish phone maker has fulfilled its promise and the latest version of Android Oreo is now available for the Nokia 2 as part of the Nokia Beta Labs. With this update, the Nokia 2 becomes the last one in the current lineup to run Android 8.1 Oreo software, albeit, still in beta.

Juho Sarvikas, HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer, took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce that the Nokia 2 would be getting the Oreo update as part of the beta programme that the company runs. This development comes after HMD’s promise to bring this update to the phone. At the same event, the manufacturer had also stated that all Nokia phones launched till date would eventually receive the Android P update, with the Nokia 1 and Nokia 2.1 getting the relevant upgrade to the current Android Oreo (Go edition). Notably, Android P Beta is currently available for the Nokia 7 Plus.

Nokia 2 specifications

Launched in October of last year, the Nokia 2 is a fairly budget-oriented handset with entry-level specifications. It sports a 5-inch LTPS HD (720×1280 pixels) display with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The handset is powered by the modest quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 SoC, along with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. There is an 8-megapixel camera sensor at the back, and a 5-megapixel sensor on the front for selfies and video calls. A 4000mAh battery powers the internals from underneath the hood, said to provide a 2-day battery life.

The Nokia 2 measures 143.5×71.3×9.3mm, and is IP52-rated (for drip protection). It comes in three colour options – Pewter Black with black face and frame, Pewter White with white face, black frame, and Copper, with black face, black back, and copper frame.
