OnePlus 5T Sandstone Variant Expected to Launch on January 5

Chinese manufacturer OnePlus is all set to launch another special variant of the OnePlus 5T on January 5, with the company teasing the launch on that date. The company is expected to bring back the Sandstone variant that was first seen on the OnePlus One. This new variant comes a few weeks after the OnePlus 5T Star Wars edition had been launched with a similar white textured back panel.

OnePlus in an official post on Weibo hints that the OnePlus 5T is getting a new Sandstone finish variant that will be launched in China on January 5. There is currently no update on the colour of the variant’s back panel. The company recently hinted at the new model through a video uploaded online. An invite has also been sent out that has phrases like ‘three days left’ and ‘The Classic returns’ on it.

The Chinese company had celebrated four years of the Sandstone Black OnePlus One last month. The Sandstone Black colour variant had been part of the OnePlus clan till the OnePlus 2. The OnePlus 3replaced it for a metal finish.

To recap, the OnePlus 5T (Review) is a dual-SIM smartphone. It features a 6-inch full-HD+ Optic AMOLED display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC and comes with 6GB/ 8GB RAM variants.

In the camera department, the OnePlus 5T sports a dual camera setup with a 16-megapixel primary sensor and a 20-megapixel telephoto sensor. There is another 16-megapixel front camera for selfies and video calling. The handset packs in a 3300mAh battery under the hood. The OnePlus 5T also comes with Face Unlock and a fingerprint sensor.

OnePlus won’t support Android Oreo’s quick OS updates feature

OnePlus confirmed in its forums yesterday that none of its current devices, including the 3/3T and the 5/5T, will support Project Treble, even after they’re updated to Android Oreo. Project Treble is an Android Oreo feature that attempts to address slow Android update schedules by allowing manufacturers to push out Google’s most recent OS without having to wait on their chip partner, like Qualcomm, to support it.

At the time of Project Treble’s announcement, it seemed that any device updated to Oreo would be eligible to support the program and that manufacturers would likely be interested in it. Now, however, it’s clear that even devices running the most recent OS won’t have to support the project, meaning that even if your phone’s manufacturer gives you Oreo, you aren’t guaranteed a faster update to the next OS. Only devices that ship with Android Oreo installed out of the box will be required to feature Project Treble, and, disappointingly, OnePlus’ most recent phone, the 5T, ships with Android Nougat. (The same goes for the Razer Phone, which was announced earlier this month.)

Still, Google’s first-generation Pixel phone supports Project Treble, and the Essential Phoneis attempting to support the feature, even though those phones first shipped with Android Nougat. So it’s clear that adding support is possible — even if, several months after Oreo’s release, it’s still rare.

It isn’t necessarily surprising that OnePlus wouldn’t support Treble, given that it clearly has no problem shipping new phones with outdated operating systems, but it would have been nice to see the company commit to supporting Google’s goal of faster updates and making the whole Android ecosystem more consistent and modern.

OnePlus Downplays Backdoor Issue on Testing App, Says OTA Update Will Remove Root Access

OnePlus received fresh criticism from experts as well as users of the OnePlus 3, 3T, and 5 for leaving behind a testing app that could leave a backdoor, allowing root access to be gained without unlocking the phone. The Chinese company has finally come out and defended its move. OnePlus has downplayed the root access exploit, and said even this access will be removed from the app in an upcoming over-the-air update.

OnePlus explained that EngineerMode app presence in its devices won’t provide root access for third-party apps, and, even otherwise, root privileges without unlocking the phone can only only be gained with physical access to the device in USB debugging mode.

“Yesterday, we received a lot of questions regarding an apk found in several devices, including our own, named EngineerMode, and we would like to explain what it is. EngineerMode is a diagnostic tool mainly used for factory production line functionality testing and after sales support,” said a member from OxygenOS team.

“We’ve seen several statements by community developers that are worried because this apk grants root privileges. While, it can enable adb root which provides privileges for adb commands, it will not let 3rd-party apps access full root privileges. Additionally, adb root is only accessible if USB debugging, which is off by default, is turned on, and any sort of root access would still require physical access to your device,” the staff member added.

A Twitter user in a series of tweets explained how the exploit can be used to gain root access on the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T, and OnePlus 5. Carl Pei, Co-Founder OnePlus, had at the time confirmed that the company was looking into the issue.

“While we don’t see this as a major security issue, we understand that users may still have concerns and therefore we will remove the adb root function from EngineerMode in an upcoming OTA,” the company confirmed in its forum post.
