Oracle, SBI Partner to Foster Digital Skills Initiative in India

Global software and Cloud major Oracle India on Monday announced a corporate citizenship collaboration with State Bank of India (SBI) and launched the ‘D-Change’ programme which will support education and learning, women’s empowerment and rural skills development in the country.

The initiative will merge SBI’s financial expertise and expansive reach with Oracle’s technology leadership to help local communities drive substantial change and develop a skilled economy, Oracle India said in a statement.

“We are committed to this joint programme with Oracle where we can leverage Oracle’s expertise and technology prowess to bring about an effective change in society through the digital revolution that India is going through”, said Arundhati Bhattacharya, Chairman, SBI.

As part of the programme, Oracle and SBI volunteers will help enhance IT literacy among high school students, teachers and parents from over 100 SBI-supported government schools through an initiative called Digital Kushalta ki Aur.

As the first project to be launched under D-Change, it will be initiated at Rotary Bangalore Vidyalaya in Bengaluru and Mandal Parishad High School, Kondapur in Hyderabad on August 6.

We are very excited to partner with SBI in this special initiative. Through this, we will leverage SBI’s financial expertise and expansive reach with Oracle’s technology expertise to bring about substantial change in the community and support the development of a skilled economy, noted Loac Le Guisquet, President, EMEA and Asia Pacific, Oracle.

Employee volunteers will help develop information and communication technology (ICT) skills, which can enhance their digital fluency.

Oracle volunteers will also conduct regular educative sessions on emerging technologies like cloud, mobile and security, in order to help improve the student’s IT knowledge.

D-Change aims to build awareness and promote financial literacy among girls and women, especially those that are underprivileged.

Volunteers will come together to empower and encourage girls and young women to consider careers in the IT field.

Oracle volunteers will conduct workshops for SBI Rural Self Employment Training Institute directors and faculty, the company said.

Oracle Signs Accord With ICT Academy of Kerala

With its aim to educate 500,000 students in India annually through its academy, software and cloud major Oracle on Monday announced a new collaboration with ICT Academy of Kerala (ICTAK).

With this collaboration, Oracle Academy – the company’s flagship philanthropic educational programme – targets to reach 6,000 students in Kerala over the next three years.

As part of the new partnership, 125 colleges in Kerala will become members of the Oracle Academy programme.

“The agreement will enable us to provide professional development for more teachers in more subjects and, in turn, will enable them to reach even more students,” Damian Haas, Regional Director, Oracle Academy, Asia Pacific and Japan, said in a statement.

Over the next three years, ICTAK intends to leverage Oracle Academy resources to create strong computer science education pathways for 6,000 students as they prepare to launch successful careers in the field of information technology and meet growing demands for a highly-skilled technology workforce in Kerala, the company said in a statement.

Working with ICTAK, Oracle Academy will train 500 educators on its academic curriculum in Java Foundations, Java Fundamentals, Java Programming, Database Foundations, Database Design and Programming with SQL and Programming with PL/SQL.

Additionally, ICTAK will deliver a customised course in Java fundamentals to students through the Government of Kerala’s Additional Skill Acquisition Program (ASAP).

Recently, Oracle signed an agreement with ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu (ICTACT) to implement Oracle Academy curriculum across 450 educational institutions in the state to help foster the next generation of IT talent.

Big Data, Online Security to Become Mainstream in 2016: Oracle

The new year will see more banks, insurers and credit-rating firms across the globe turning to enhanced security measures to guard against online fraud more effectively, global software and cloud major Oracle has predicted.

“(The year) 2016 will witness an increase in the proliferation of experiments default risk, policy underwriting, and fraud detection as firms try to identify hotspots for algorithmic advantage faster than the competition,” the leading US-based cloud service provider said in its outlook for 2016 on Monday.

The professional data scientists will see increasing demand for their skills from established companies including in India, it added.

Oracle has 12 development centres in India, including facilities in many emerging cities like Vijayawada, Thiruvananthapuram, Noida and Ahmedabad.

“(The year) 2016 will be the year when big data becomes more mainstream and is adopted across various sectors to drive innovation and capture digitization opportunities,” said Neil Mendelson, vice president, Oracle’s big data product management, in a statement.

“We will also see the emergence of dataflow programming which provides simpler reusability of functional operators and gives pluggable support for statistical and machine learning functions,” the 2016 outlook added.

In 2016, simpler big data discovery tools will let business analysts shop for datasets in enterprise “Hadoop” clusters, reshape them into new mashup combinations and even analyse them with exploratory machine learning technique.

“This will improve both self-service access to big data and provide richer hypotheses and experiments that drive the next level of innovation,” the company said.

In 2016, organisations will witness technologies mature and become more mainstream thanks to cloud services and appliances with pre-configured automation and standardisation.

“Companies will not only capture a greater variety of data in 2016, they use this in a variety of algorithms, analytics and apps,” it noted.

2016 will be the year where Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Machine Learning (ML), Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Property Graphs (PG) will be applied to ordinary data processing challenges.

“The new shift will include widespread applications of these technologies in IT tools that support applications, real-time analytics and data science,” the outlook stated.

Increasing consumer awareness of the ways data can be collected, shared, stored and stolen will amplify calls for regulatory protections of personal information in next year.

“The continuous threat of ever more sophisticated hackers will prompt companies to both tighten security, as well as audit access and use of data,” the outlook report predicted.

India is home to Oracle’s second largest workforce of developers and engineers and accounts for its largest research and development investment outside the US.
