Zoho One Offers 38 Zoho Apps at Rs. 1,000 Per Employee Per Month

Chennai-based Zoho, which is known for its suite of enterprise apps, has been aggressively taking on giants such as Salesforce for years now. The company has now launched a suite called Zoho One, which it terms as an operating system for businesses.

Zoho One offers 38 Zoho apps, all bundled under one suite, at a price of Rs. 1,000 per employee per month. This is the price for India and the global price is $30 per employee per month. Once an organisation has signed up for Zoho One, all of its employees can use all Zoho apps in the suite at no extra costs. The catch here is that Zoho wants the entire organisation to sign up for the service, and not just for a few employees.

While Zoho One includes lots of apps from the company’s suite, it doesn’t have apps such as Zoho CRM Ultimate Edition, Zoho Creator Express Plans, domain registration, and a few others.

Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu told Gadgets 360, “Zoho One has been in the works for over 10 years. It’s only possible if you build a foundation for the entire suite. We wanted to provide an entire operating system for businesses.”

Vembu said the company has been surprised by the response to Zoho One so far, particularly because larger organisations have expressed an interest in the suite. “Over 300 organisations have already signed up for it before the product has even launched,” Vembu said.

Technology oriented companies are the largest category of customers for Zoho. Vembu says companies using a similar suite from other companies have been paying a minimum of $200 per employee per month. The companies that are ready to switch are already on Salesforce or other software, he says. “Whenever they have to add employees (to the company), the price is so heavy that they have to ration software,” Vembu said.

With Zoho One, the company hopes to fix that problem. While the entire organisation will have to go onboard Zoho One, the company feels that the price is competitive enough for them to make the switch.

Only 1 per cent of the population see education as the country’s most important issue, poll shows

Education and schools are less likely to be named as important than unemployment and housing, Ipsos MORI poll finds

Only 1 per cent of the public considers education to be the most important issue facing Britain today, according to a new poll.

Nearly half of respondents (49 per cent) surveyed in January said the NHS was one of the important issues facing Britain, while 17 per cent saw it as the most important issue, according to the Economist/Ipsos MORI findings.

But only 15 per cited education/schools as one of the important issues – a 3 per cent drop since December – and just 1 per cent viewed it as the most important issue. This was despite a succession of warnings about the state of school finances and the potential impact on pupils’ education.

The findings follow a TES analysis looking at why school cuts are hitting the headlines less frequently than the pressures facing the NHS.

Respondents were asked two questions: “What would you say is the most important issue facing Britain today?” and “What do you see as the main/other issues facing Britain today?”. Their spontaneous, unprompted responses were then noted down.

Apart from the NHS, “the common market/Brexit/the EU/Europe” was the second most popular choice for the most important issue. This was followed by “immigration/immigrants” then “the economy”, “housing” and “unemployment”. These were all more likely than education to be named as an important issue.

Education is a ‘mid-tier issue’

Out of the 10 topics most likely to be mentioned by respondents as being important, “education/schools” was the least likely to be seen as the “most important” issue overall. For the poll, the 970 respondents were chosen as a representative sample of the general population.

Education appeared to be higher on the agenda of Labour supporters than Conservative Party supporters. Some 19 per cent of Labour supporters said it was important, compared with 12 per cent of Tory supporters.

A graph accompanying the poll findings shows that the importance of education in the eyes of the public has plummeted since May 1997, when Tony Blair’s Labour Party won the general election after campaigning for “education education education” and nearly half of people felt it was an important issue facing Britain.

Since then, the lowest point came in May 2009, when only 9 per cent of people said education was important.

Jonathan Simons, director of policy and advocacy at the Varkey Foundation, said: “People can only worry about so many things at once. As certain things become more important, by default other things become less important.”

In response to questions such as those posed by Ipsos MORI, nearly everyone would mention a maximum of three issues, he said, meaning that if the NHS and Brexit were constantly hitting headlines there was limited “space” in people’s minds for education.

He added that, historically, education has been “a mid-tier issue”. Apart from some notable exceptions, such as Labour’s former education secretary Ed Balls, education secretaries have nearly always tended to be younger, up-and-coming politicians, or people heading towards the end of their careers, he said.

Mr Simons could only see education reappearing high up people’s agendas in the event of a “long, sustained” campaign by Prime Minister Theresa May that lasted for several months and resulted in much stronger media coverage of the issues facing schools.

Sarah Kitchen, research director in the children and young people team at NatCen Social Research, tweeted that the findings may be down to the fact that education has a direct impact on fewer people.

Figures emerge as councils call for new powers to stop academies “cherry picking” their intakes

Academies have been accused of “cherry picking” their pupils after it emerged the Education Funding Agency (EFA) has rejected almost 90 per cent of applications from councils to force them to admit a child.

The Local Government Association has called for councils to be given the power to order academies to accept ‘hard to place’ pupils.

Currently, they can only force maintained schools to accept these pupils – often children who were excluded by their previous school.

Although they can ask an academy to take a child in, if it refuses, the council can only ask the EFA – part of the Department for Education – to direct them to do so.

According to government figures, councils have made 121 such applications in the four-and-a-half years since April 2012. Only 15 were approved.

Des Reynolds, executive headteacher of the Short Stay School for Norfolk, which educates children who are permanently excluded, described it as a “really important issue”.

“In our current accountability-driven system, there are massive pressures on schools in conflicting directions”, he told TES. “There’s a really negative incentive for schools and academies not to take in some of the most challenging and vulnerable students.

“Without the power of a local authority to act on behalf of these most vulnerable students, these conflicting pressures have an adverse impact on those who need the places the most.”

He added: “I think, in all cases, you have got to find someone with responsibility who does not have a vested interest. In terms of having the organisation, the capacity and not having a vested interest, the obvious choice is the local authority.”

Richard Watts, chair of the children and young people board at the Local Government Association, said it was “vital that councils are urgently given the powers to take these decisions locally”, rather than civil servants in Whitehall.

He added: “By ignoring local council advice, the EFA is allowing academies to effectively choose the children they want to admit.

“There are far stronger safeguards in place to ensure maintained schools do not cherry pick their pupils and the same measures should be in place for all academies.

“Decisions about individual children should be made in the best interest of each child, not to protect favoured schools. These decisions are best made locally by parents and councils who know each child best.”

TES contacted the EFA for comment.

A Department for Education spokesperson said: “We expect local authorities and schools to work together to ensure all children, regardless of circumstances, are offered a place at a suitable school as quickly as possible.

“There are a number of steps that are taken before the EFA issues a formal direction which in the majority of cases end in a pupil being admitted to a school. A direction should be considered a last resort.”

Two academies per week need intervention

An average of more than two academies per week in England are facing formal interventions because of poor performance.

The figures have been released by ministers in response to a question by the Liberal Democrats.

In the past year, 66 academies have been moved to another chain and 50 have been given warning notices to improve.

The Department for Education says academies have been at the centre of improvements in standards.

But Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron says it is “evidence that the government is putting dogma first”.

Long-term improvement?

The Department for Education’s figures show how many academies had faced formal interventions from regional school commissioners in the past 12 months.

The highest number were in the East Midlands and Humber region, where 13 academies faced warning notices and 18 had been moved to another academy chain or sponsor.

In the South West, there were 21 academies taken over by another sponsor and three were sent warning notices.

“This data seems to suggest that the ideological experiment has failed and the Tory obsession with what is on a schools’ nameplate hasn’t improved standards.,” said Mr Farron.

A separate report on academies has published research into the performance of sponsored academies, created since 2010.

The study, from the London School of Economics and the Education Policy Institute, says that results improve in the year after a secondary school is converted into an academy.

But it says “the improvement dissipates over the following three years, eventually returning to levels previously seen before the school became an academy”.

Russell Hobby, leader of the National Association of Head Teachers, says this research “makes clear that turning a school into an academy will not in itself boost performance”.

“It’s clear that an automatic ‘academy effect’ does not exist.”

The head teachers’ leader said a more important factor was whether schools had “enough talented and highly qualified teachers” and that changing structures was “no substitute for getting the basics right”.

Earlier this year, the then Education Secretary, Nicky Morgan, was pushed by a backbench rebellion to abandon a plan to require all schools in England to become an academy.

The current Education Secretary, Justine Greening, has still to decide whether to press ahead with plans that would allow academy chains to run without any parent governors.

A Department for Education spokeswoman said: “Our reforms, which have academies at their heart, are raising standards for children across the country, with over 1.4 million more pupils in good or outstanding schools than in 2010.

“Converter academies continue to perform above the average for state-funded schools, while sponsored academies are typically schools that were previously poorly performing, but have been improving on average.”

Private school fees soar to £160,000 per child, research finds

Parents face a bill of almost £160,000 to have their children privately educated amid the soaring cost of fees in recent years.

The average cost of a private school education for a day pupil who started reception in 2003 and left after sixth form in 2016 is £156,653, according to research by Lloyds Bank Private Banking.

Annual fees have almost doubled in that time, with the average cost of sending a child to private school for a year rocketing from £7,308 in 2003 to £13,341 today, a rise of 83 per cent.

In London parents have seen fees rise by 25 per cent in the last five years alone.

But costs have risen far more than average earnings, putting an enormous strain on families who want to choose private education for their children.

School fees rocketed by an average of 21 per cent over the last five years, up from £10,983 in 2011 – an increase that is 8 per cent above inflation.

The steep hike means that the £13,341 school fee accounts for almost 40 per cent of the average full time earnings of £34,545, a marked change from in 2003 when fees amounted for 28 per cent of earnings.

Despite the increasing financial burden on families, pupil numbers at private schools remain largely unchanged over the last five years.

Those going to senior school – between the ages of 11 and 16 – have fallen by 3 per cent, but numbers going to private sixth forms have grown by 10 per cent, and those at junior schools have gone up by 6 per cent.

Sarah Deaves, private banking director at Lloyds Bank, said: “All parents want the best for their children and a good education is no exception.

“A place at a private school is a huge financial commitment, almost an eye-watering £157,000 for just one child, from reception to finishing the sixth form as a day pupil.

“With average annual fees at £13,341 per child and the compulsory school leaving age now 18 years, many families may well feel some strain.

“It has, therefore, become increasingly important that parents, and sometimes grandparents, plan their finances as early as possible if they want a private school education for their children.”

The research, based on data from the Independent Schools Council and the Office for National Statistics, showed that private schooling in London was the most expensive in Britain, costing £179,145 to educate children from the age of five until they are 18.

Parents in the North paid the least, at £126,609 for 13 years of fees.

In London, school fees have almost doubled since 2003, rising 97% from £8,016 to £15,828 today, compared to the lowest increase over the same period in the West Midlands, a rise of 66 per cent from £6,984 to £11,580.

But there is help for parents, with around 160,000 children getting assistance for their fees – almost a third of all pupils at fee-paying schools, not just day pupils – that is worth more than £850 million a year.

The vast majority of this assistance, 85 per cent, comes from schools themselves.

When Greg and Holly Johnson started their blog ClubThrifty.com in 2012, they thought it would be a fun way to document their financial journey.

“We had some student loans and car loans we wanted to pay off,” said Holly. “Once we realized other people were blogging about the same things we were experiencing in real life, we decided to give it a shot.”

Since those early days, their blog has taken on a life of its own. Greg quit his full-time job as a funeral director to work on the blog in 2015, and he currently earns over $40,000 per month through his efforts. Holly, on the other hand, quit her job in the same funeral home to write full-time. She consistently earns $20,000 per month, but sometimes more. Holly also has a popular freelance writing course — EarnMoreWriting.com — that brings in around $4,000 per month.

The crazy thing is, they’re not even at home working most of the time. Follow them on Instagram and you’ll see they are constantly in ridiculous destinations like the Swiss Alps, the Greek Islands, or the Caribbean with their kids. Since their business is entirely online, the pair can basically work from anywhere. And that’s exactly what they do.

How They Balance Work and Play

Earning a significant income while traveling 16 weeks or more each year may sound inspiring, but the Johnsons say it’s a lot of work. They say they are always “working ahead” when they are home so they can spend some downtime on their trips. That often means working weekends or evenings for weeks at a time.

Since Holly is a professional writer, she has a lot of deadlines she has to meet no matter what. So, she often ends up working while she travels, which isn’t always fun.

“It’s a trade-off,” she says. “I get to travel all the time, but I also have a lot of responsibility.”

During a two-week trip, she said she will usually just go ahead and set aside 3-4 days to work, even if it’s just in the morning for a few hours. This helps her stay on top of her email inbox, new content, and questions from her editors, she says.

Greg doesn’t have anyone to report to so he doesn’t have as many deadlines, but he also has to put out a lot of fires. He also monitors their website traffic and affiliate income while they travel, usually by getting up a few hours before the kids while they’re on a trip.

Because they’re often working when they travel, the couple says that, overall, they probably work 30 to 40 hours per week on average.

“It’s just more sporadic,” says Holly. “I might take a week or ten days off work then wind up working for the next 20 days straight.”

How They Made it Work

Anyone who has tried to find success at blogging or freelance writing knows that neither road is easy. Both fields are incredibly competitive, and it can be difficult to build long-term income that lasts.

Johnson says she and her husband have been successful because they had to be.

“We really wanted to get out of our 9-5 jobs and build a new life — one where we were in control,” she says.

When they started their online endeavors, they both used to get up early and work at 5:00 a.m. before they started their “real jobs,” and they gave up an endless number of weekends and evenings when the kids were in bed. It was hard, they both said, because they were balancing side jobs on top of parenthood and full-time work.

Greg’s success as a blogger also didn’t happen overnight. It took years for him to learn how to position their website to earn real income. And even now, their successes are mixed with plenty of failures.

“Everything doesn’t have to go right,” says Greg. “You just need to get some of the things you try to actually work.”

Their Tips for Online Business Success

Whether you want to blog for a living or become a freelance writer, the pair offers some tips can apply to everyone.

For example, the couple stresses the importance of having multiple income streams and “not having all your eggs in one basket.” That’s part of the reason Holly still writes for a living when they clearly don’t need the money.

“We both like knowing that, no matter what happens, we aren’t going to lose all our income streams at once,” she said. “I also don’t feel the need to work with my husband 24/7. I like earning my own money even though we share our finances.”

Another tip from the pair: Keep your personal liabilities low.

“If you want to build an online business, the best thing you can do is build a debt-free lifestyle,” she says.

The Johnsons share a 2009 Toyota Prius that’s been paid off forever, and they don’t have any other debts. They even paid off their primary home in early 2018, so their housing expenses are limited to taxes, insurance (such as auto, life, and homeowners insurance), and maintenance.

Another tip for business success is “be yourself,” the couple agreed.

In the blogging and writing world, so many people try to find success by copying what other people are doing. In reality though, the same thing won’t work for everyone. You’ll have the best chance at success if you figure out who you are and what makes you different.

“We have tons of blogging friends who are wildly successful, and they all run their business a different way,” says Johnson.

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, the Johnsons want people to know their life isn’t perfect. They work a ton of hours and they put a lot on the line to follow their dreams. It’s not easy to bet the farm on blogging when you have two children to take care of, nor is it easy to let go of stable, well-paying jobs.

But the couple seems to persevere no matter what life throws their way — which they say is due to the fact they never gave up. And they never will.

The couple likes having money and they love to travel, they say, but they love the freedom they’ve earned the most.

Greg Johnson says he’s basically unemployable now and that he “will never get a job again.” Holly doesn’t mind working, but she always plans to stay in a freelance role instead of employment with one company — even if the job was remote. She said she doesn’t miss the minutiae of regular 9-5 work, sitting in meetings, and all the time she wasted driving back and forth.

“Nobody would hire us anyway,” she said. “Who wants an employee who travels four months of the year and hates meetings?”

State-run telecom firm BSNL on Thursday started corporate e-mail service for Re. 1 per day in partnership with Jaipur-based firm Data Infosys.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in a statement said that it has started offering its customers “e-mail services to ensure privacy and security of their data”.

BSNL customers will be able to avail the service linked to their websites for yearly fee of Rs. 365 per e-mail ID with 1GB storage and Rs. 999 per e-mail ID with 10 gigabyte storage.

“The payment will have to be made once in a year. The effective price of the service starts for Re. 1 per day with 1GB storage. For usage beyond 10GB, customers can buy extra 5GB storage for an annual payment of Rs. 500,” Data Infosys CEO Ajay Data said.

All enterprise e-mail accounts will come with security tools and dual authentication that will make them hacker-free e-mail accounts, the statement said. The state-run firm highlighted “privacy” as key to its e-mail service.

“Our e-mail offering is very secured and e-mails are not scanned like other e-mail hosting players. E-mail solution does not allow anyone including e-mail administrator to monitor/ look into any e-mail account. Entire e-mail solution is hosted in BSNL Network, giving lawful rights and access speed at its best,” BSNL Director for Enterprise Business NK Mehta said.

The e-mail service will also have mobile app for access on cellphones.

Facebook Reportedly Surpasses Google, Microsoft in Terms of Profit Per Employee

Facebook has leapfrogged Microsoft and Google’s parent company Alphabet in securing maximum profit per employee in the second quarter of 2017 while Twitter suffered a hefty loss, a media report said.

Facebook, which employed 20,658 persons in the past quarter – a 43 percent increase over the same period last year – made $188,498 (roughly Rs. 1.2 crores) per employee, according to a report in ReCode.

Microsoft made $52,400 (roughly Rs. 33 lakhs) and Alphabet $46,610 per employee – four times less profit per employee than social media giant Facebook – in the three months that ended on June 30.

Verizon, AT&T and Ford followed with $27,405, $15,410 and $10,098 per employ.

Twitter, which saw a net loss of $116 million last quarter, lost nearly $36,000 per employee.

The reason for Facebook’s efficiency is that software products do not require humans for the production and distribution process.

“Of course, even jobs formerly assigned to humans are coming under the purview of robots – so more industries could see consolidation of labour,” the report added.

The research that was restricted to select major companies that have reported their employee count in their latest quarterly earnings, did not include Apple as they do not have a quarterly updated headcount.
