'Passive Wi-Fi' System Said to Use 10,000 Times Less Power Than Traditional Wi-Fi

The University of Washington may have just solved Wi-Fi power consumption problems once and for all. A group from the the University’s engineering department have created a Wi-Fi system that, according to them, uses 10,000 times less power than traditional Wi-Fi. “Passive Wi-Fi” as the team calls it, is compatible with current smartphones and routers.

According to a video describing Passive Wi-Fi, traditional Wi-Fi radios consume a lot of power mainly because of the analogue radio frequency (RF). In order to reduce power consumption of Wi-Fi radios in smartphones and digital devices, the Passive Wi-Fi only uses the digital baseband while the analogue RF band is delegated to a single plugged-in device.

Essentially, Passive Wi-Fi helps remove the power hungry analogue RF from the picture, which will make you smartphone last a whole lot longer.

The plugged-in device is used to send the wave RF signal to the Passive Wi-Fi device which then generates Wi-Fi packets and sends it to existing devices including smartphones.

The team has managed to achieve download speeds of up to 11Mbps which falls in line with most LTE download speeds. However, the team is now working on increasing the throughput.

The team say that this new technology will allow for new kinds of communications that was not possible before due to the power requirements of current Wi-Fi systems.

“We wanted to see if we could achieve Wi-Fi transmissions using almost no power at all. That’s basically what Passive Wi-Fi delivers. We can get Wi-Fi for 10,000 times less power than the best thing that’s out there.”- Shyam Gollakota, assistant professor of computer science and engineering, University of Washington.

U.S. high court approves rule change to expand FBI hacking power

The Supreme Court on Thursday approved a rule change that would let U.S. judges issue search warrants for access to computers located in any jurisdiction despite opposition from civil liberties groups who say it will greatly expand the FBI’s hacking authority.

U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts transmitted the rules to Congress, which will have until Dec. 1 to reject or modify the changes to the federal rules of criminal procedure. If Congress does not act, the rules would take effect automatically.

Magistrate judges normally can order searches only within the jurisdiction of their court, which is typically limited to a few counties.

The U.S. Justice Department, which has pushed for the rule change since 2013, has described it as a minor modification needed to modernize the criminal code for the digital age, and has said it would not permit searches or seizures that are not already legal.

Google, owned by Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O), and civil liberties groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union and Access Now contend the change would vastly expand the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s ability to conduct mass hacks on computer networks.

They say it also could run afoul of the U.S. Constitution’s protections against unreasonable searches and seizures.

While Congress can reject amendments to the rules that govern federal courts, it rarely exercises that authority and is not expected to do so during a heated election year. And few lawmakers have shown interest in the subject.

Democratic Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, condemned the rule change as having “significant consequences for Americans’ privacy,” and vowed to introduce legislation to reverse it.

“Under the proposed rules, the government would now be able to obtain a single warrant to access and search thousands or millions of computers at once; and the vast majority of the affected computers would belong to the victims, not the perpetrators, of a cybercrime,” Wyden said in a statement.

The Justice Department’s quest to broaden warrant jurisdiction has not drawn as much attention as other recent confrontations over government access to digital information. These included the FBI’s standoff with Apple over encryption arising from the agency’s effort to unlock an iPhone used by one of the shooters in December’s San Bernardino massacre.

A Justice Department spokesman said the change was necessary because criminals increasingly use “anonymizing” technologies to conceal their identity online, and remote searches are often the only way to apprehend such suspects.

The change does not authorize any new authorities not already permitted by law, the spokesman said.

Moto One Power Alleged Live Images Reveal Display Notch, Vertical Dual Camera Setup

Moto One Power is expected to be Lenovo-owned brand Moto’s upcoming mid-range smartphone with premium specifications like a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC and 4GB of RAM. In a new report, alleged live images of the handset have been revealed that give us a closer look at the Moto One Power. As per the images, the mid-ranger is expected to arrive with a display notch, vertical dual rear cameras, a USB Type-C port, and Android One branding. Launch details and features haven’t yet been confirmed by the phone maker.

In a report by TechInfoBit, the first look at the highly-anticipated Moto One Power has been outed. However, the tipster claims there is confusion around the naming and it might just be called Moto Oneinstead. On the front, the smartphone sports a display with a bezel-less design and a notch on top. The notch is seen to sport the selfie camera and other sensors, including one – possibly – for Face Unlock. Left of the smartphone houses the SIM card tray, which might have dedicated dual SIM slots or a hybrid slot.

On the right, the Moto smartphone has a volume control buttons with a lock/ power button below it. Back of the handset has a vertically stacked dual camera setup with an LED flash between the two sensors, the Motorola logo with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, and Android One branding at the bottom. Lastly, on the bottom of the smartphone is a USB Type-C port and dual stereo speakers, as per the report.

Previously, leaks around the Moto One/ Moto One Power have suggested that the phone will get features such as a 6.2-inch full-HD+ (1080×2280 pixels) display with a 19:9 aspect ratio, a Snapdragon 636 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, and a 3780mAh battery. In terms of optics, the rear camera might get a 12-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor. On the front, a single 8-megapixel sensor is available for selfies and video calling.

Do note that Motorola or Lenovo haven’t yet confirmed the name or any other details around this smartphone, so it is advised to take all of it with a pinch of salt. That said, we can expect a launch soon, considering the amount of activity around it.

Samsung Flags Mobile Weakness as Chips Power Record Q1 Profit

Samsung Electronics said weakness in the global smartphone market would slow earnings growth, as it reported record quarterly profit on Thursday thanks to strong demand for semiconductors used in servers.

The world’s biggest maker of memory chips, smartphones and television sets also flagged softer demand for smartphone OLED panels as a challenge for the second quarter, while its cash-cow chip business should remain strong.

“Generating overall earnings growth across the company will be a challenge due to weakness in the display panel segment and a decline in profitability in the mobile business amid rising competition in the high-end segment,” Samsung said in a statement. In the display panel segment, which manufactures OLED and LCD screens, profits were affected by slow demand for flexible OLED panels and greater competition between rigid OLED and LTPS LCD.

Samsung Electronics shares were up 3 percent as of 0040 GMT, while the KOSPI benchmark share price index was 0.9 percent higher, as investors shrugged off concerns about the smartphone market and seized on the positive outlook for memory chips.

“Shares are rising as Samsung Electronics’ outlook for its memory chip business appears more positive than we’ve heard from other companies,” said Greg Roh, analyst at HMC Investment & Securities.

South Korean rival SK Hynix and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) separately warned this month of slower growth in smartphone chip sales. TSMC, a key supplier for Apple’s iPhones, cut its revenue target last week.

But Samsung Electronics, a rival and supplier to Apple, forecast continuing strong sales not only of server DRAMs but mobile DRAMs as well.

Demand for NAND chips used in mobile devices was also expected to be strong, it added, referring to the “high-density trend” for more powerful chips in the latest gadgets.

Samsung Electronics said operating profit was KRW 15.6 trillion ($14.4 billion) in the first quarter, up 58 percent from a year ago and in line with the KRW 15.6 trillion the company had estimated. Revenue jumped 19.8 percent to KRW 60.6 trillion, also in line with its estimate.

The chip business was Samsung’s top earner again as it booked a record KRW 11.6 trillion operating profit in January-March, from KRW 10.9 trillion in the previous quarter, despite signs the recent boom in memory chips was tapering off.

The mobile business booked KRW 3.8 trillion in quarterly profit, up 82 percent from a year ago.

Samsung has shipped about 10 million units of its flagship Galaxy S9 smartphone since sales began in mid-March, in what analysts said was a solid showing. Strong sales of the Galaxy S8 smartphone from last year despite the early release of its flagship Galaxy S9 smartphone showed that consumers are not enthusiastic about upgrading their phones to the latest products.

According to market research firm GfK, global smartphone demand fell two percent to 347 million units in the first quarter of 2018. Demand was especially sluggish in China and North America, it said.

However, the average sales price grew 21 percent year-on-year in the quarter, leading to an 18 percent rise in global smartphone revenue year-on-year to $129.8 billion.

AMD and Qualcomm Announce Partnership to Power Always Connected PCs

AMD and Qualcomm announced today that they would be working together to power always connected PCs. This could see laptops featuring AMD’s Ryzen Mobile processors shipping with Snapdragon LTE modems.

When Ryzen Mobile was revealed in October, AMD claimed playable framerates in an ultrathin notebook form factor. Users can expect to run League of Legends, DOTA 2 and CS:GO at 1920×1080, and Overwatch and Quake Champions at 1280×720, and still get between 43fps and 66fps depending on the quality settings used. Moreover, 4K streaming is supported by Amazon, Vudu and Netflix. HDR and Freesync 2 are supported on both internal and external displays.

What this means is, multiplayer gaming on the go could soon become a reality for many, allowing you to play online games like Overwatch or Counter-Strike on your laptop when you’re on the road over cellular data thanks to Qualcomm’s modems.

“Both AMD and Qualcomm have shown a consistent commitment to delivering products that redefine next-generation mobile user experiences,” said Kevin Lensing, Corporate Vice President and General Manager, Client Computing, AMD. “OEMs around the world will now be able to combine the recently announced AMD Ryzen mobile processors with Qualcomm Technologies’ leading wireless solutions via their Snapdragon LTE modem family to achieve new levels of performance, connectivity and capability for ultrathin notebook PCs.”

“Qualcomm Technologies believes the always connected PC is the future of personal computing, and we are working with AMD to bring each company’s expertise to bear for these exciting products,” said Alex Katouzian, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mobile, Qualcomm Technologies. “Combining AMD processors with our cutting-edge LTE connectivity technology results in always connected client notebooks for consumers in a mobile-first future.”

However no actual product has been revealed and other than announcing this collaboration, no other details have been made public either, so it’s tough to point out what exactly can be expected.

With PC gaming getting increasingly portable, this partnership poses a threat to Intel which has a stranglehold on this segment of the market. For consumers, it means more choice in the future, which is never a bad thing.
