Do you aspire to work in SBI, India’s largest bank? State Bank of India (SBI) is hiring specialists for its marketing department on a contractual basis. SBI has extended the last day to apply online for the positions, according to an advertisement on the bank’s website. The last date to register and pay fees online is June 2, 2017. SBI is hiring one senior vice president (brand/media/research), one vice president (marketing communications), one vice president (digital marketing), one vice president (media strategy & operations) and one senior manager (digital marketing). Selection will be based on short-listing – based on their qualification, experience and overall suitability – and personal interview, SBI said. The banking major has also relaxed the required experience by two years for two vice president roles – marketing communications and media strategy & operations, it said.

Candidates applying for the position of senior vice president (brand/media/research) should have a minimum 8 years of experience, “with career experience either in BFSI/ Telecom or any other large service sector”. Graduates in any discipline can apply and those with MBA in Marketing will be preferred, SBI said.

Without divulging the salary being offered on these roles, SBI said: “The compensation package would comprise of fixed and variable components but not a limiting factor for a suitable candidate.”

An application fee (non-refundable) of Rs. 600 is applicable, which needs to be paid online.

Some of the responsibilities of the senior vice presidents listed by SBI included:

Strategising and implementation of effective marketing plans for different Business Units in line with their business objectives
Developing sharp marketing briefs, based on compelling market/consumer insights
Managing different agency partners (creative, media, research etc.) and other vendors, to get them to deliver high quality output within defined marketing budget and timelines

Also, for the position of vice president (digital marketing), SBI is looking for candidates with MBA from a recognised university and a minimum experience of eight years “in varied roles including Digital Marketing. Work experience in a Public Sector Bank, preferably with awareness of SBI work culture and management practices.” Among other skills, SBI has mentioned core experience in product marketing using digital media platforms with specific experience in search and display, SEO, SEM and programmatic.

Two-fifths of school leaders blame staff quitting profession for recruitment woes, poll shows

Almost four in five schools have struggled or failed to fill vacancies this year, new research reveals

The number of school leaders blaming recruitment problems on an exodus of teachers from the profession in their local area has risen dramatically, a new survey shows.

In 2014, just 15 per cent of school leaders said that the rate at which teachers were quitting the job locally was making it harder to recruit, but that figure has jumped to 42 per cent this year.

The study by the NAHT headteachers’ union comes amid growing evidence, unearthed by TES, of heads offering “golden handshakes” and other financial incentives to recruit and retain teachers.

The survey shows that almost four in five schools have struggled or failed to fill vacancies this year.

The latest government figures showed that nearly a third of teachers who entered the profession in 2010 had dropped out within five years – although this rate has not declined markedly in more than a decade.

Government ‘falling short’

Russell Hobby, general secretary of the NAHT, has warned of the “damage” being done to the teaching profession by poor retention rates.

“After three years of warnings by NAHT, the government is still falling short of its core responsibility to guarantee enough teachers of a high enough standard to meet the needs of our growing school population,” he said.

The figures are contained within the union’s annual recruitment survey, which polled more than 1,000 school leaders. This is the third year that it has run the research.

The new data reveals a rise in the proportion of heads citing high housing and living costs as contributing to recruitment problems, from 24 per cent to 31 per cent in a year. One primary school headteacher in London told TES that three of his teachers are leaving at Christmas because of high costs.

But it is also clear that a number of teachers are leaving the profession because of workload pressures. Tim Barnes, headteacher at Alkrington Primary School, in Rochdale, told TES that one of his Year 6 teachers – who has been working there for 15 years – is quitting to become a professional dog walker because she finds the current pressures “difficult to tolerate”.

Increasingly, it has also become more difficult to recruit and retain Year 5 and 6 teachers in his school. Mr Barnes said: “The marking workload, particularly higher up the school, is quite intense. In some cases, teachers are taking home 90 books every day and some stay up until midnight to mark.”

The Department for Education said that the government was investing more than £1.3 billion over this Parliament “to attract the brightest and best into teaching”. But it recognised that some schools can face recruitment challenges.

A spokesperson added: “We are also working with the sector to tackle issues that teachers tell us are most likely to lead to them considering leaving, such as unnecessary workload and poor pupil behaviour.”

Universities have called for the Scottish government to increase funding for teacher training after it emerged that spending was now £13 million lower than seven years ago – despite the ongoing recruitment crisis.

The government has sought to reassure the public over recent teacher shortages, stressing that it has increased spending on initial teacher education (ITE) every year for the past five years.

And it has been quick to highlight its investment in new routes into the profession, including redundant oil workers retraining as secondary teachers.

However, figures obtained by TESS that span the past 10 years show that spending on ITE has fluctuated wildly over the period and is now substantially lower than it was a decade ago.

For the 2016-17 academic year, the teaching grant stands at £25.6 million – £13 million lower than in 2009-10 when £38.6 million was spent on teacher training.

The figures also show that between 2009-10 and 2010-11, funding for ITE was cut by around a quarter (£10 million), from £38.6 million to £28.6 million.

The cut was a measure to cope with rising numbers of unemployed teachers, but funding for ITE has never fully recovered, despite recent teacher shortages.

At the time, teaching unions, parents’ groups and politicians criticised the move and warned that it could lead to a shortage of teachers in future years.

‘Turbulent’ impact

Universities are calling for the government to increase its investment in ITE because schools of education are being forced to fall back on associate tutors employed on precarious contracts.

Dr Rowena Arshad, head of the University of Edinburgh’s Moray House School of Education, said: “The impact on schools like mine can be quite turbulent if there are significant spikes or downturns [in funding].

“This is because we will have staffing in place, or not, and will have to respond to those spikes or downturns. Employing new staff, or losing staff, is not a quick process…I suspect that all stakeholders are agreed that a yo-yo scenario is not a good one.”

A Scottish government spokesperson said that more than £2 million funding was being made available to train an extra 260 teachers in the coming academic year, and the target for 2016-17 was 66 per cent higher than 2011-12.

Launch of children's panel recruitment drive

A drive has been launched to sign up 500 volunteers as Children’s Panel members.

Recruiters are particularly looking for more applications from younger people to help support some of Scotland’s most vulnerable children.

They say they may be better able to relate to those they’re trying to help.

The Children’s Panel system aims to help vulnerable youngsters who get into trouble, often as a result of having suffered neglect or abuse.

It currently has around 2,500 panel members across Scotland.

‘Different backgrounds’

Boyd McAdam, national convenor and chief executive officer of Children’s Hearings Scotland, said they were looking to “top up their numbers”.

“We rely on volunteers from the community to take decisions about what needs to be done for our vulnerable children,” he said.

Mr McAdam said they wanted to ensure a gender balance in hearings and that different backgrounds were represented on the panels.

He added: “I think the challenge for us is always to bring in younger people.

“It’s what young people say they would like to see – panel members of an age closer to themselves.”

‘Very rewarding’

All volunteers receive extensive training to help them in their role.

Mr McAdam said: “We are looking for someone who has empathy with children and young people who has an ability to listen and obviously to read the paper work and take decisions.”

One existing volunteer, Drew McCulloch, said his role on the Children’s Panel was “very, very hard work but very, very rewarding”.

The supermarket worker from Darvel in Ayrshire, said: “Basically, I have worked in and around Kilmarnock all my life so it’s just something I can give back to the local community that I have worked and served in for 30 years.”

Recruitment notices on the go

It often happens that students find themselves checking the college notice board for recruitment notices and then forgetting to apply within the deadlines. To address such woes, a fourth-year student of IIT Kharagpur has come up with a mobile app that not only keeps students informed about new recruitment advertisements but also sends reminders about deadlines.

Prudhvi Dharmana, a student of the computer science and engineering department, has developed the ‘CDC Notify’ app which acts like a virtual recruitment notice board and also sends alerts to the students to submit their resumes on time.

“We already have an online notice board where all the recruitments are put up. But it has to be checked constantly to check for updated recruitment notices. Often, students also forget to send in their CVs at the right time. I realised that it would greatly help students if there were an easier way to access the notices through a mobile app which can notify them directly about the notices. Students can add reminders manually to a notice to alert them that the submission deadline is approaching,” Dharmana says.

Android and others

The app is available at the Google PlayStore. Dharmana is considering making it available for the Windows platform. Currently, the app is available only for students of IIT Kharagpur and works within the institute campus. However, he is working on extending the app for the use of students from IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi.

“Since the basic structure of the app is available, it will not take too long to extend the app’s service to other campuses. It should barely take four to five days for the app to be started in other IITs,” Dharmana says.

Launched on August 26, the app has already been downloaded by about 1,000 students.

“I have been successful in developing a user-friendly interface for students, which in the near future can be used to integrate various other essential features such as attendance, applying for an internship, etc. I want this application to be helpful to my batchmates and seniors during the placement season this year. On a much broader scale, I will use the feedback after this placement season to refine this app, and would like to extend this to various other institutions across India to help them with their placement season. After all, every institute (not just the IITs) needs to notify students instantly regarding placements, and I believe that CDC Notify will definitely suit that purpose,” he adds.
