HIGHLIGHTS

  • Two live images of the phone and its box have been leaked
  • The phone is expected to sport four cameras in all
  • It might get a 19:9 display with a notch on top

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro is expected to be the Chinese phone maker’s next offering in its affordable Redmi smartphone series. We have heard a lot of chatter around the smartphone in the rumour mill in the past, but now have a closer look at its details thanks to alleged live images of the smartphone and its retail box. The Redmi Note 6 Pro is expected to sport a 6.26-inch Full Screen display with a 19:9 aspect ratio and possible 1080×2280 pixels resolution, which could mean that the Redmi Note 5 Pro could end up sporting a display notch.

Other specifications listed on the smartphone’s protective film, as spotted on Reddit, reveal a dual selfie camera setup with a 20-megapixel primary and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor. At the back, the Redmi Note 6 Pro will allegedly sport a 12-megapixel primary camera sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary unit. The handset is expected to get a 4,000mAh battery under the hood, with support for some sort of fast charging – our bet would be on Quick Charge 4.0. Additionally, we could expect USB Type-C on the smartphone, but Xiaomi might just stick with Micro-USB as it has with all of its recent Redmi-branded handsets.

Yet another leak, this time courtesy GlobeMobiles, gives us a look at what is supposed to be the back of a retail box of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro. The box lists the above-mentioned specifications along with mentioning that the phone will be made available in a Black colour option and 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage configuration. A report from last month however claims that there will also be an entry-level 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage option for users to choose from.

The same report from last month had alleged that the Redmi Note 6 Pro would be priced anywhere between EUR 200 and EUR 250 (Rs. 16,900 to Rs. 21,100) for European markets, and be launched with a cheaper price tag in other markets like India where the predecessor Redmi Note 5 Pro has a starting price tag of just Rs. 14,999. The Redmi Note 6 Pro could get a premium 6GB RAM variant in India and China, and be sold in Black, Blue, and Gold colour variants.

iPhone X Bestselling Smartphone of Q1, Redmi 5A Only Android Phone in Top 5: Strategy Analytics

iPhone X Bestselling Smartphone of Q1, Redmi 5A Only Android Phone in Top 5: Strategy Analytics

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Apple shipped 16 million iPhone X units in the quarter
  • Xiaomi shipped 5.4 million units of the Redmi 5A in the period
  • iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 7 made the top 4

iPhone X was the bestselling smartphone of Q1 2018, a Strategy Analytics report has claimed. Applehad a great outing in the quarter, with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus – smartphones that were launched alongside the iPhone X last September – coming in at second and third, respectively. The Cupertino company rounded off the top four with the iPhone 7, and the only Android smartphone in the top five is remarkably Xiaomi’s entry-level smartphone – the Redmi 5A.

Strategy Analytics in its report says the iPhone X captured 5 percent of the global smartphone market in Q1 2018, with 16 million units shipped. Apple shipped 12.5 million iPhone 8 units, which had a 3.6 percent share of the market, followed by the iPhone 8 Plus’ 8.3 million units, and 2.4 percent share. The iPhone 7 saw 5.6 million units shipped, a fall from its record 21.5 million units in Q1 2017.

“For the second quarter running, the iPhone X remains the world’s most popular smartphone model overall, due to a blend of good design, sophisticated camera, extensive apps, and widespread retail presence for the device,” said Juha Winter, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics. “Apple has now shifted almost 50 million iPhone X units worldwide since commercial launch in November 2017.”

Coming to the first Android contender in Strategy Analytics’ Q1 2018 global smartphone shipments report, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A saw 5.4 million units shipped, marginally behind the iPhone 7. The entry-level smartphone was launched in China last October, and brought to India in November. As an introductory offer for the first 5 million units in India, the smartphone’s base model (2GB RAM/ 16GB storage) had a Rs. 1,000 discount, bringing its price down to Rs. 4,999. It ended the introductory price offer in March.

“Xiaomi has become wildly popular across India and China,” said Linda Sui, Director at Strategy Analytics. “Xiaomi is selling a huge volume of smartphones through online channels, with key retail partners including Flipkart and JD.”

The Strategy Analytics report reveals only the top six models in terms of global smartphone shipments, saying they accounted for 1 in 7 of all smartphones shipped in the quarter. The Samsung Galaxy S9+took the last spot in its list. The Samsung Galaxy S-Series flagship shipped 5.3 million units, just behind Xiaomi’s budget offering, claiming 1.5 percent of the global smartphone market. However, not all is doom and gloom for Samsung’s flagships, with the market research firm predicting the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus would become the top-selling Android smartphone in Q2 2018.

Woody Oh, Director at Strategy Analytics, said, “Samsung’s new flagships, Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, only started shipping toward the end of the first quarter, but shipments are already off to a very good start. The S9 Plus delivers an attractive, bezel-less, curved-screen design, a rich portfolio of software apps, and best-in-class retail distribution across dozens of countries. We expect the Galaxy S9+ to become the best-selling Android smartphone globally in the second quarter of 2018.”

Other manufacturers made up 84.6 percent of the 345.4 million market, shipping 292.3 units over the quarter. Global smartphone shipments fell year-on-year, from 353.8 million units the previous year.

Redmi Note 5 Pro: A Pro that actually isn’t

Xiaomi released the Red Note 5 Pro in the Indian market. Luckily, we got one on our hands to try out. The smartphone comes equipped with a spanking new Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset with an Adreno 509 GPU. But we will get to that part later. Let’s first list out the whats and wheres.

Display on this phone is a 18:9 ratio 2160×1080 p resolutions, which makes it a HD+ display unit. But there are still massive bezels, both top and bottom. The top bezel has a 24 MP Sony built sensor for a camera with an LED selfie light assist. The back camera is a dual 12 + 5 MP camera setup. Note 5 Pro comes equipped with a 4000 MAh battery, which is surprisingly efficient. The operating system on this phone is a Mi O9 standard which gives it all the Mi smart features that are available on their entire line up of phones. In addition to the standard app running, this phone has new features like dual app running mode and a reading mode.

There is a consensus in the tech space in India, that the Red Note 5 Pro should have been the upgrade to the Redmi Note 4, and we totally agree. The Note 5 was a needless and pointless “slip in” that the Xiaomi treated as a transition device.

Coming back to the new chipset that occupies the core of this phone, Snapdragon 636 is not a good bet. Like most new tech, this chipset has flaws that were either ignored or were just put in to test it out in the market real time. The reason we say this is, because the 636 heats up. And that is when the manufacturer has saved it from functional loads. And there in lies the biggest bummer. This phone DOES NOT SUPPORT FAST CHARGE. And this phone DOES NOT HAVE 4K VIDEO SHOOTING CAPABILITY. Read that in caps and bold.

What it does have is better “bump up” on the optics. Meaning a decent amount of dynamic range on the rear cameras, in addition to the “almost as good as One Plus 5T” portrait mode quality. We would also like to agree that this camera gave better selfie results than the 5T. But the camera function of this phone is not quite 10/10. The camera app UI is still the “same old …albiet outdated.” This is a phone that sports the Pro badge but sadly doesn’t have a “Pro Mode” built in the camera UI. Tsk Tsk.

The 4000 MAh battery performs okay, with an average of 7~ 8 hours of continuous “screen on” time. So the battery should last you almost a full day of usage. Though in the year 2018, it still doesn’t support fast charge. Meh.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro is supposed to be the upgrade of the Redmi Note 5, which was the upgrade to the Redmi Note 4. Funnily enough, (yes, funnily. Conscious effort has been put in using that term), the Redmi Note 5 Pro doesn’t support 4K video shooting. Its restricted to 1080P. The younger sibling, Redmi Note 5, is the smarter one of the lot, as it does have 4K Video. So maybe calling Note 5 Pro an upgrade might be an over statement!?

One last thing that also stood out in the list of “Don’t have” is the fact that this phone is still rocking the hybrid SIM tray. That wasn’t a good idea when the hybrid slot came out, it surely isn’t any better now, specially in the day & age we live in. I don’t understand how much of cost cutting do companies that give hybrid slots achieve by doing so. Its literally a matter of few millimetres of aluminium. Talking of cost cutting, maybe you, can also cost cut, buying this phone. There are two variants with the following configuration.

4 GB RAM + 64 GB internal space which costs INR 13999/- 6 GB RAM + 64 GB internal space which costs INR 16999/-

So go ahead and save some money and buy a One Plus 5T instead.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Reportedly Receiving MIUI 9.5 OTA Update

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Reportedly Receiving MIUI 9.5 OTA Update

Redmi Note 4 units have reportedly started receiving the latest MIUI 9.5 stable build, as per user reports. The MIUI 9.5.4.0.NCFMIFA update has an approximate file size of 425MB and brings several new features and bug fixes to the Redmi Note 5’s predecessor. The update comes in the wake of Xiaomi’s announcement that 30 of the company’s smartphones – including the dated Mi 3 and Redmi 3 – will get the MIUI 9.5 build, over OTA, in the coming weeks.

According to a report by GSMArena, which cites Redmi Note 4 users, the mid-range smartphone has received its latest MIUI update albeit based on top of Android Nougat. As per screenshots submitted by users, the software update comes with fixes for issues such as top sites in Mi browser, dual apps in WhatsApp, App Vault, home screen freezing, system launcher bugs, weather info in status bar, automatic updates, and UI adjustments. While not mentioned, the update is expected to bring the latest Android security patch.

The OTA update comes more than a week after Xiaomi was reported to have started seeding the nightly build of MIUI 9.5 to select Redmi Note 4 users. Nightly builds are usually sent across to randomly selected users in order to obtain user feedback before a wider rollout.

Just recently, Xiaomi had announced updates for several of its smartphones including the latest Redmi 5, Redmi 5 Plus, Redmi Note 5, Mi Max 2, and so on. The update will roll out to eligible smartphones gradually via OTA. You can, alternatively, check for updates by going into Settings > About phone > System updates.
