Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ 128GB, 256GB Storage Variants Finally Go on Sale in the US
Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, Samsung’s two popular smartphones of 2018, will now be available in two new storage variants in the US. The South Korean giant has rolled out 128GB and 256GB inbuilt storage models of the smartphones in the country. Both the handsets are available starting May 1 and will be released on May 18. They are available for purchase exclusively via Samsung’s official site. To recall, in India, Samsung had originally launched the 64GB and 256GB storage variants. The 128GB version was launched later the same month.
Samsung, in an official blog post, announced the launch of the new Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ variants. Samsung noted that the new tiers are being made available for buyers “who want to instantly access their high-capacity files while on the go.” The Galaxy S9 series has the ability to capture 4K videos, slo-mo videos, and high-res pictures. It makes sense for Samsung to roll out the extra inbuilt storage, even though they are expandable via microSD cards.
“With new 128GB and 256GB storage options, consumers can take and store even more 4K movies, epic Super Slow-mo videos and amazing low-light pictures. For users, more on-board storage means more ease, flexibility and convenience to manage their photo and video libraries. The new Galaxy S9 and S9+ continue to support external microSD cards of up to 400GB capacity,” Samsung explained.
For the smaller Galaxy S9, the 128GB variant has been priced at $769 (roughly Rs. 51,300), with the 256GB model costs $819 (roughly Rs. 54,600). When it comes to the Galaxy S9+, 128GB will cost $889 (roughly Rs. 59,300), while the 256GB variant has been priced at $939 (roughly Rs. 62,600). Also, both smartphone variants will ship in Lilac Purple, Coral Blue, and Midnight Black.
Notably, Samsung is aslo offering free Gear Icon X (2018) earbuds or a Gear S3 Frontier discounted to $99. The offer is valid from May 1 to May 17 on every Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ purchase, including the pre-orders.
To recall some of the specifications, the Samsung Galaxy S9 features a 5.8-inch QHD+ Curved Super AMOLED 18.5:9 display, 4GB of RAM, a 3000mAh battery, and a Super Speed Dual Pixel 12-megapixel autofocus f/1.5-f/2.4 sensor with OIS. It measures 147.7×68.7×8.5mm and weighs 163 grams. The Samsung Galaxy S9+, on the other hand, packs a 6.2-inch QHD+ Curved Super AMOLED 18.5:9 display, 6GB of RAM, a 3500mAh battery, a dual rear camera setup with dual OIS, specifically a wide-angle lens with Super Speed Dual Pixel 12-megapixel autofocus f/1.5-f/2.4 sensor and a telephoto lens with 12-megapixel autofocus f/2.4 sensor. It measures 158.1×73.8×8.5mm and weighs 189 grams.
The Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC in the US. You get the Android Oreo experience out-of-the-box and IP68 water + dust resistance as well. Connectivity options include Gigabit LTE, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac, USB Type-C, Bluetooth 5.0, and, yes, the 3.5mm headphone jack. Both phones have an identical 8-megapixel autofocus front camera f/1.7 sensor and come with a microSD slot with support for cards up to 400GB capacity.

MWC 2018: Samsung Galaxy S9 is not fixing what already works well, but packs better cameras
The Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ were undoubtedly the Android flagship torchbearers of 2017, and why change something that works well? Samsung clearly doesn’t want to tinker with a winning formula, and that is perhaps why this year’s Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ take a lot of inspiration from the predecessors. The phones will start rolling out in stores in some countries from 16 March onwards, with prices very similar to the launch prices of the S8 and the S8+.
The S9 and S9+ have the same bezel-less designs with the tall 18.5:9 aspect ratio screens. The 5.8-inch screen in the S9 and the 6.2-inch screen in the S9+ are the same Super AMOLED panels as before, but Samsung claims to have boosted the brightness levels this time around. While the design remains the same, the new phones are slightly different in terms of the dimensions, which means if you are upgrading, the same cases and covers may not work.
While some markets will get the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with 4GB or 6GB RAM, other markets such as India will get Samsung’s latest Exynos processors.
The big change this time around is the camera system in the S9 and the S9+. The S9 has a single camera while the S9+ has a dual camera. The S9 is the first flagship phone from Samsung that features a mechanically adjustable aperture which can switch between f/1.5 for low light situations and f/2.4 for better lit environments. Till now, the LG V30 had the widest aperture in a smartphone thus far, with its glass lens capable of f/1.6 aperture. This, Samsung claims, lets in 28% more light than the S8’s f/1.7 aperture. The S9’s 12-megapixel camera sensor also has a new dual pixel autofocus technology called Super Speed Dual Pixel, which is faster and locks focus more reliably, reduces noise and distortions and can record up to 960 frames per second of slow motion video—something that is straight out of Sony’s Xperia camera handbook.
Samsung has a slightly different take on the animated emoji feature, also seen in the Apple iPhone X. Samsung calls this AR Emoji, and instead of a lion or a monkey, this maps over 100 points of your face using the front camera and lets you animate your own face. You can then customize this with different hairstyles and more.
Samsung has upgraded the Bixby virtual assistant as well, with a new augmented reality vision section. There is a live translate feature that uses Google’s Translate service, while the service now links up better with some of the camera features too.
It is quite a guarantee that the S9 and the S9+ will again be the Android flagship phones that will set the pace this year, and are a tough act to follow for any competition.

London: When Microsoft revealed a replacement to Windows 8, it skipped the number 9 and went straight to Windows 10. Apple’s iPhone 8 was followed by the iPhone X (pronounced “ten”). But Samsung refused to follow: The successor to its Galaxy S8 is the Galaxy S9 (and a larger S9 Plus), and it’s coming out in March.
The phone is critical for the company. Samsung needs to show it has the hardware and software chops to maintain its leadership in the Android market, while proving Apple isn’t king of smartphone design. Then there’s fending off rising Chinese competition from Huawei and reassuring investors that vice chairman Jay Y. Lee has the company’s future under control since his legal woes commanded global headlines.
But above all, Samsung needs to be better than the iPhone X in the eyes of consumers. Here’s how they compare.
Photography and video
Great pictures are essential for any top-end phone. Samsung has equipped the S9 Plus with two cameras: a wide-angle, and a telephoto (like the iPhone X) and both capture at a resolution of 12 megapixels (also like the iPhone X). Samsung even mounts the two lenses of the S9 Plus vertically — something Apple also does with its flagship.
But the big difference may come with low-light performance. When you take a picture with the S9, you actually capture 12 images simultaneously. The phone then compares all exposures to create a single shot that includes all the detail you want, but with as little grain and noise as possible. It’s similar to how the iPhone X processes high-dynamic range photos, taking three images at different levels of light exposure to combine them to produce a richer, more balanced image.
Samsung’s decision to expand this technology in the S9 compliments the physical camera lens, which has a wider aperture to let in more light — an f1.5 aperture compared to Apple’s f1.8. In the camera world, that small change can make a big difference.
Screen and design
Most features are the same across S9 and S9 Plus models, aside from the camera system. But the latter version is larger: it uses a 6.2-inch display compared to the regular S9’s 5.8-inch offering. The large and small variants weigh 189 grams and 163 grams (a little under six ounces) respectively.
The iPhone X weighs 174 grams — right in the middle of Samsung’s two models. But the screen is one big difference. Apple’s famous “notch” atop the iPhone X’s display is not something Samsung adopted. Instead, the S9 screen is an uninterrupted rectangle. The bezels at the top and bottom of the display are thin, but Apple’s are thinner. Consumers will have a choice: slimmer bezels but with a notch, or no notch but slightly larger bezels.
Horsepower and performance
In the US, Samsung will equip the Galaxy S9 with Qualcomm’s latest and greatest system-on-a-chip, the Snapdragon 845. On paper, it includes a CPU that runs at speeds up to 2.8GHz and has eight processing cores. In other regions, such as Europe, Samsung will use its own Exynos processor, not Qualcomm’s.
Until the phone gets released for review it’s impossible to say how well the Galaxy S9 will perform compared to its own international variant, let alone to the iPhone X. Apple’s phone uses its own A11 Bionic chip, which runs at up to about 2.4GHz, using six processing cores. But historically Apple’s custom-designed silicon, its integration with the iOS software it powers, together with the rest of the hardware in the phone, has given it the edge over competitors whose numbers, on paper, appear greater. What’s safe to say is that both phones should handle anything realistically thrown at them.
Features and security
Apple has never let customers expand internal storage of the iPhone with removable SD memory. But Samsung does with the S9. It’ll have 64GB built in, but it supports Micro SD cards with up to 400GB of additional capacity. Apple will sell you up to 256GB of internal storage when you choose an iPhone X, but after that you’ll need to rely on cloud-based file-hosting, such as iCloud or Dropbox.
But Apple users will most likely still feel their iPhone X hardware is in the lead, as Samsung is continuing to use fingerprint sensors and iris scanning for unlocking the latest Galaxy. That isn’t thought to be as sophisticated as Apple’s system, which maps the contours of a human face to identify an individual and was deemed secure enough to no longer require fingerprints at all. Samsung, instead, also includes a fingerprint reader on the rear of the phone.
Samsung has also taken the idea of Apple’s animated emojis, which use the front-facing camera to let users animate facial features of a unicorn and more by moving their own face. Samsung is introducing a similar feature with the S9, but rather than using existing emojis it will let you create an avatar of yourself and animate that instead. These can be shared as videos of animated GIFs via email or text message.
Price and verdict
Apple and Samsung both know people are keeping the phones for longer, so manufacturers need to have those that do upgrade to pay more. Apple’s iPhone X starts at $999 — $200 more than the iPhone 8. Samsung is also increasing the price of its flagship, bumping the S9 up $100, to $950 in the case of the Plus model.
These phones are the most expensive flagships either has made within their categories, and on paper they share remarkable similarities. Aesthetically, there’s a bigger difference between an iPhone 8 and an iPhone X, particularly in terms of raw industrial design, screen size and display quality. Samsung’s S9 offers less of a noticeable upgrade physically compared to the S8, but improved photographic features and raw horsepower will be key selling points to potential upgraders.
As for the customer on the fence over whether to defect from one manufacturer to another, it’ll be a trade-off between screen format and bezels, expandable storage, low-light photography and physical look and feel. Elsewhere we’re still in the realm of very attractive slabs of glass and metal, despite record highs in cost. Bloomberg

Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ Teasers, Leaks Suggest Upgraded Camera Performance
Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are the company’s upcoming flagship smartphones set to launch at the Galaxy Unpacked event on February 25, just ahead of MWC 2018 in Barcelona. While we still have a few days before the big unveiling, numerous leaks and teasers have surfaced online giving us a clearer picture of what to expect at the event. Samsung has also released three new teasers that hint at the features of the upcoming Galaxy S9 range, including an Animoji-competitor. A separate leak shows supposed shots taken on Galaxy S9’s camera. The Galaxy S9+ has also been spotted on AnTuTubenchmark website.
Starting off with information right from the horse’s mouth, three new official teasers have been uploaded on YouTube that show off three expected features on the Galaxy S9 duo. The first teasershows slow-motion footage hinting at a slow-mo camera feature on the upcoming phones. The second teaser shows low-light, flash photography that possibly hints at an upgrade on that front, which can be expected with a new f/1.5 aperture camera. And, finally, the third teaser shows off 3D emojis that look eerily similar to Animoji on the iPhone X – something that was rumoured earlier this week.
9To5Google seems to have acquired detailed information on this rumoured 3D emoji feature. According to their sources, the feature will capture an image of your face and use it to create a full-bodied animated character. The report also states that users will be able to customise the characters’ clothing, hairstyle, looks using the tools available.
Separately, the Samsung Galaxy S9+ has been spotted on benchmark portal AnTuTu’s database. A screenshot, obtained from Weibo, shows the model number SM-G9650 with a score of 265,267. According to the listing, the phone will run Android 8.0.0 Oreo. It is expected to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, coupled with Adreno GPU, 6GB RAM, and 64GB RAM. The display has a resolution of 1080×2220 pixels, in sync with the current Galaxy S8+.
And, finally, Twitter user @MMDDJ posted alleged shots taken on the Galaxy S9. The tweet shows images of a skyline taken side-by-side on the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S8. Interestingly, these images are cropped because the tipster claims – in a reply – posting the original images is not allowed.
Stay tuned to Gadgets 360 as we bring you all the information around the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, leading up to the official launch.

- Pre-orders for skins and wraps are currently live
Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have been outed in yet another set of renders, this time courtesy accessories maker Dbrand. The renders reveal the front and back panel of both phones. According to the images, both phones are expected to sport a fingerprint sensor below the rear camera setup. Additionally, the Galaxy S9 is seen to have a single rear camera, while the Galaxy S9+ has a dual camera setup. Another leak from Twitter also confirms this distinction. Apart from that, the selfie camera might feature Animoji-like animated stickers.
Dbrand has started taking pre-orders for skins and wraps for the Galaxy S9 series. According to the renders seen on the website, the design of the Galaxy S9 is similar to last year’s Galaxy S8. The only visible differences are a dual rear camera setup on the Galaxy S9+ and the fingerprint sensor vertical placement on both.
A tweet by tipster Evan Blass on Saturday also hinted towards the same rear setup on the Galaxy S9 series. Blass also cited sources suggesting Animoji-like “animated avatars” that can be generated using the selfie mode on both the phones. Details around that are currently unknown.
Separately, some reports have suggested a price hike for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. It is rumoured that the Galaxy S9 duo will be the most expensive phones in the Galaxy S flagship range, priced upwards of KRW 9,50,000 (roughly Rs. 56,600).
To recap the rumours, the Samsung Galaxy S9 series might be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC in US and China, and a Samsung Exynos 9810 SoC in other international markets (including India). A 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage variant is expected for the Galaxy S9+; a 512GB premium variant is also speculated to launch. The camera will get a major upgrade. Some expected features are variable aperture of f/1.5 – f/2.4, ‘Super Speed’ mode, ‘Super Slow-mo mode’, Intelligent Scan, integrated iris scanner etc.
Everything is expected to be revealed at the Galaxy Unpacked 2018 event on February 25.

Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ Renders Leak, Show Fingerprint Sensor Below Camera
HIGHLIGHTS
- Renders reveal a 360-degree view of the smartphone
- Fingerprint shifted to below the rear camera module
- Dual camera setup not seen on the Galaxy S9
Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ have been leaked in new sets of renders, purporting to provide a 360-degree view of Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphone duo. The renders indicate the fingerprint sensor will be shifted from where it was on the Galaxy S8 – adjacent to the rear camera – to below the rear camera lens. The design has otherwise largely remained the same from the previous generation. Alongside, another render shows an abandoned, more ambitious design for the Galaxy S9, while alleged front panels of the smartphone duo have also made it to the Internet.
Tipster @OnLeaks has shared the leaked renders of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Do note that these are CAD-based renders and are not actual images of the smartphones. We had earlier reported that the Galaxy S9 will have an improved Iris scanner this time around.
The design of the Galaxy S9, in the OnLeaks renders shared by 91Mobiles, are similar to the Galaxy S8 (Review) we saw last year. There is a bezel-less display on the front, which might have slightly thinner bezels compared to last year’s Galaxy S8. Renders also show that the Galaxy S9 will not sport a dual-camera setup on the rear, a feature that appears to be exclusive to the Galaxy S9+.
There is also a change in the position of the fingerprint sensor. While it remains on the rear of the device, the sensor has been shifted from the right of the camera lens to below it. This might be a decision taken to make it more ergonomic for the user. The sighting of a fingerprint sensor on the back also means that an in-screen fingerprint reader won’t be featured on the Samsung Galaxy S9.
A heart-rate sensor and a single-LED flash can also be seen on the right side of the rear camera sensor. Renders reveal a USB Type-C port, primary microphone, loudspeaker, and a 3.5mm jack on the bottom. There is also a volume rocker on the left and a power key on the right of the Galaxy S9. The phone is said to have a 5.7-inch display, and feature a bottom bezel just 0.1mm thinner than the Samsung Galaxy S8. The smartphone is said to measure 147.6×68.7×8.4mm.
As for the leaked OnLeaks renders of the Samsung Galaxy S9+ shared by MySmartPrice, we see an identical design, except for the use of vertical dual rear camera setup. The phone measures 157.7×73.8×8.5mm and comes with a 6.1-inch screen, with top and bottom bezels said to be 0.1mm thinner than the Galaxy S8+.
Separately, Tipster Ice Universe has shared a set of renders showing what are claimed to be the smaller-bezel design Samsung abandoned for the Galaxy S9, alongside the design it is going ahead with, which look similar to the Galaxy S8. The tipster also shared an image of the purported front panels of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, which again show a design similar to the current Galaxy S-Series flagships.

The Galaxy S9 will reportedly be a more iterative update and could show up at CES
All the major smartphones of 2017 are out in the world, but it’s never to early to start thinking about next year’s flagships. Samsung is reportedly starting earlier than ever, with the company reportedly previewing the S9 and S9+ at CES in January, according to Evan Blass at VentureBeat.
The S9 and S9+ are said to be more iterative updates on the existing S8 and S8+ than the radical redesign Samsung offered this year. According to Blass, the new phones should see upgraded processors — likely Qualcomm’s forthcoming Snapdragon 845 — for an extra speed boost, but the biggest change is said to be Samsung moving the fingerprint sensor back below the camera, instead of the problematic location next to the lens that Samsung has placed it on the S8, S8+, and Note 8. Both phones should also see the addition of AKG stereo speakers. And don’t worry, the headphone jack is reportedly sticking around for another year.
According to Blass, the S9+ is also getting a few upgrades over the smaller S9, with the larger device reportedly getting 6GB of RAM (instead of the 4GB found in the S9), and a second rear camera similar to the Note 8.
Finally, Samsung is also rumored to be releasing a new version of its DeX dock that places the phone flat, allowing it to be used as a virtual keyboard or touchpad. (It’s also said to be backwards compatible with older Samsung devices.)
It’s still not clear how much of this will be previewed at CES versus Samsung’s traditional March launch event, which is also reportedly taking place. But with the annual tech show looming in the distance, it won’t be too long of a wait.
