China Reportedly Seeks to Build Its Own Wikipedia, Recruits 20,000 for Content

Wikipedia might not be the best source for information on Internet as the website is prone to human error but it still serves as a go-to solution for quick and easy information for many of us. It might be hard for us to believe but China’s rigorous Internet censorship has ensured that country’s users are not able to get access to Wikipedia. However, the Chinese government has now reportedly recruited around 20,000 people to develop its own version of Wikipedia, which is expected to be China-centric and will go online in 2018.

The ‘Chinese Encyclopaedia’, which has also been described as “The Great Wall of Culture” by an official, will be a knowledge base consisting of more than 300,000 entries (each expected to be about 1000 words long) on around 100 disciplines, as per a report by South China Morning Post. That number of entries is far behind the English language Wikipedia (nearly 5.4 million entries), but roughly the same size as the Chinese language Wikipedia, the report points out. While Chinese companies including Baidu and Qihoo 360 already have their own online encyclopaedias, they are not even close to matching Wikipedia in terms of scale and breadth of information.

The government has recruited scholars from universities and research institutes to contribute to the articles that will be put onto the Chinese Encyclopaedia. As per Yang Muzhi, the editor-in-chief of the project and the chairman of the Book and Periodicals Distribution Association of China, the aim of the Chinese Encyclopaedia is “to showcase China’s latest science and technology developments, promote historical heritage, increase cultural soft power, and strengthen the core values of socialism,” as per the report.
Interestingly, Yang says that the aim is not to mimic Wikipedia but to go even further. “We have the biggest, most high-quality author team in the world. Our goal is not to catch up, but overtake,” he was quoted as saying.

China currently has highest Internet population in the world with around 720 million users but access restrictions on many popular website means that there is demand for content that has not been served. As one might expect, it is not clear how much interference will be there from the government’s side on the Chinese Encyclopaedia’s content.

School seeks to block critical Ofsted report

A school has gone to the High Court to try to prevent a highly critical Ofsted report from being published.

The report is understood to criticise the school for a policy of teaching boys and girls separately and segregating them at mealtimes.

Reporting restrictions mean neither the name nor the location of the school can be revealed.

The school has the backing of its local education authority in its attempt to stop publication of the report.

The school’s interim board is disputing the report’s findings and is applying for a judicial review to have it quashed.

On Tuesday, Mr Justice Jay, sitting in London, was told the school – which is in England – admitted pupils of both sexes between the ages of four and 16.

He heard how, from Year 5 (age 10 and 11), girls and boys were completely segregated for lessons, break and lunchtimes, as well as for school clubs and trips.

Barristers representing the school claimed documents suggested Ofsted inspectors had decided that segregation of pupils was unlawful, before visiting the school.

They outlined what they described as “pre-determined bias” against the school by inspectors.

Under cross-examination, the lead Ofsted inspector said some pupils had expressed unease about girls and boys being taught separately.

One girl told him it was “dumb” and another said it did not prepare her for life in Britain.

The school cannot be identified because a judge at an earlier hearing said identifying it could “generate a media storm and tensions and fears for parents and the local community”.

Objections to Ofsted

Ofsted has told the BBC there have been four attempts this year for injunction or judicial review against one of their reports.

Of these, two were turned down. In one case, an injunction failed and the report was published, but the school is still seeking retrospectively to overturn the findings via a judicial review.

The fourth attempt comes from the school currently at the High Court.

If the judge rules that the inspection report cannot be published, the case could make it easier for other schools to block critical reports by inspectors.

New Intel India Initiative Seeks to Infuse Technology in Education

In an effort to contribute further to the “Digital India” initiative, chip-making giant Intel India on Friday launched an initiative to strengthen the use of technology in the country’s education ecosystem.

At an event jointly organised by Intel and the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry here, the company said it is collaborating with leading device manufacturers, education digital content and publishers and education solution providers to build end-to-end solutions that promote the use of technology in India’s education sector.

“The initiative to create a comprehensive ecosystem is an endeavour to establish an accessible digital infrastructure that enables affordable solutions,” said Debjani Ghosh, managing director of Intel South Asia, in a statement.

As part of this collaboration, Intel has made available its “Intel Pentium Processor A1020” to leading device manufacturer partners.

The processor delivers power savings and is optimal for devices designed for running education applications in semi-urban and rural India.

Device manufacturers such as Acer, HP, Dell, Lenovo, Micromax, Datamini and iBall will continue to provide a spectrum of Intel architecture-based devices, the company informed.

Intel will help deploy management solutions for schools, classrooms, content and learning and also manage student information systems.

Xiaomi seeks exemption from local sourcing norms

Chinese mobile device maker Xiaomi has sought complete exemption from the mandatory 30 percent local sourcing norms for opening single brand retail stores in India.

“The company has sought permission from the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) for opening single brand retail trading (SBRT) in India. They also want exemption from the mandatory local sourcing norms,” sources said.

When contacted about the matter, the company said: “We have filed an application for SBRT but would be unable to share more details as it is still at a nascent stage.”

Last year, the government had relaxed the foreign direct investment (FDI) policy for single-brand retailing.

As per the policy, the government may relax the sourcing norms for entities undertaking single-brand retailing of products having ‘state-of-the-art’ and ‘cutting edge’ technology and where local sourcing is not possible.

At present, 100 percent FDI is permitted in the sector but the companies are required to take FIPB permission if the limit exceeds 49 percent.

In respect of proposals involving FDI beyond 51 per cent, sourcing of 30 per cent of the value of goods purchased will be from India, preferably from MSMEs, village and cottage industries, artisans and craftsmen, in all sectors.

Xiaomi sells its devices through select e-commerce platforms and retail stores.

India is one of the biggest markets for Xiaomi globally, which assembles devices like Redmi 2 and Redmi Note at the manufacturing facility of Foxconn, a leading contract manufacturer.

According to research firm IDC, shipments in India grew 28.8 percent year-on-year to 103.6 million units in 2015 compared with 10.1 percent growth for the global market.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 gets an update as company seeks 25 testers

Xiaomi introduced the Mi Mix 3 slider with a ceramic back and promised a global arrival, but not before it gets beta testers to clear out any bugs. The company relaunched today its Global Mi Explorer Program, which is aiming to recruit 25 people across the globe to test the newest Mi Mix 3.

To be part of the program, you have to be a registered member of the Mi community. Then you should just follow the link provided in Source below. The company has prepared “series of missions” specially designed for Mi Explorers, and then select the lucky 25 participants. Application are accepted until Sunday, and all qualified applicants should receive an email by December 10.

While the company is gathering its fans, it also launched an update to its Mi Mix 3 devices in China. The latest package with version number MIUI 10.0.12.0 weighs about 2.1 GB and brings slider sound effects, fixes some slider settings and takes care of bugs. They all can be found in the Settings menu under Slide Settings.
