Oppo F5 Launch Set for October 26, Tipped to Sport Dual Selfie Cameras

Oppo has teased the upcoming launch of its F5 smartphone. In a post on its Philippines Facebook page, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer clearly mentions that the Oppo F5 will be launched on October 26. It’s not certain whether the Philippines launch will follow a China or global unveiling – for now, this is the only launch date disclosed for the selfie-focused smartphone.

The launch teaser on the Oppo Philippines page carries the tagline “F5: Capture the real you,” clearly indicating the smartphone would be selfie-centric. The Oppo F5 has appeared in a couple of leaks over the past two weeks, starting with launch posters in the Philippines. Featuring the same tagline, the posters were spotted in SM Megamall in Metro Manilla. The posters (seen below) show the smartphone from behind, in Black and Red colour variants, with a single rear camera setup and a fingerprint sensor on the back panel.

Another set of Oppo F5 leaks showed the smartphone in a video promoting its selfie cameras, as well as render images. Alongside, some specifications were leaked. The Oppo F5 is said to have a 6-inch 18:9 display, 20-megapixel rear camera, dual 16-megapixel front cameras, Snapdragon 660 SoC, 6GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and a 4000mAh battery.

All the leaks point to the smartphone having a metallic body with minimal display bezels. Other colour variants seen include Gold and Rose Gold. Notably, the smartphone is also said to be the design reference for the recently leaked OnePlus 5T – though, we urge readers to take this last leak with a pinch of salt.

Earlier this month, we reported that the Gionee M7smartphone has been confirmed to launch soon and now we have finally received the exact date for unveil. Gioneehas announced that the company will launch its M7 smartphone in China on September 25, which also makes us think that the company might also launch the M7 Power handset, which was earlier said to launch on September 28, on the same date. Separately, the live images of the front panel of the M7 have also surfaced on the Internet.

Talking first about the official information provided by the company, the launch poster from Gionee, shared on Chinese microblogging website Weibo, shows the date clearly as September 25. Apart from the date, the poster also shows the outline of the upcoming Gionee smartphone, which suggests that the handset will come with thin bezels on all sides of the display.

Moving to the leaked live images, again shared on Weibo, the alleged front panel of the Gionee M7 smartphone can be seen in the pictures. Just like the outline on launch poster, the live images also suggest that the phone might feature a near bezel-less display, which has become sort of a trend in smartphone industry this year.

According to the previous leaks, the handset is expected to run on Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box and support for a single-SIM slot. The Gionee M7 has been tipped to feature a 6-inch full-HD (1080×2160 pixels) display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The smartphone is expected to be powered by MediaTek Helio P30 SoC paired with 6GB of RAM and ARM-Mali-G71 GPU.

The internal storage capacity of the Gionee M7 has been tipped to be 64GB. In terms of optics, the smartphone is expected to sport a 16-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and flash support. Some of the camera features include 4K video, face detection, HDR photo, and touch focus. At front, there is tipped to be an 8-megapixel front camera.

It didn’t lead to a score, but it’s an incredible feat of athleticism by Georgia Tech quarterback TaQuon Marshall. The Yellow Jackets have been handing it to No. 25 Tennessee, dominating possession with their flexbone offense and running up a 21-7 lead in the third quarter. That Marshall run went for 28 yards, and he carried for a one-yard touchdown a couple of plays later. He’s been electrifying.

When Marshall scored, Tech had controlled possession for 26:58 to Tennessee’s 8:43. It’s been an utterly dominant flexbone performance, with Marshall (at the time of that touchdown) only throwing four times. He completed two for 59 yards, and Tech’s been marching along methodically for five yards per carry — over and over and over.

Tennessee had an entire offseason to prepare to stop Paul Johnson’s triple option. It doesn’t appear that the Vols did a great job of it. Marshall’s already well over 100 yards rushing.

Body set up to deal with sex determination info on Internet, Centre tells SC

Section 22 of the PCPNDT Act pertains to prohibition of advertisements relating to pre-natal determination of sex and punishment for contravention.

The government on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that it has set up a nodal agency to redress complaints seeking deletion of materials violating Indian laws prohibiting pre-natal sex determination, from search engines and websites.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra considered the submission of Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar, representing the Centre, that the nodal agency was functional and besides taking action on complaints, it also kept tabs on websites to ensure that there was no information available in the virtual world on pre-natal sex determination.

To this, the Bench, which also comprised Justices Amitava Roy and A.M. Khanwilkar, said “the nodal agency should also be monitoring on its own to ensure that such materials are not there on websites… the nodal agency can take suo motu [on its own] note of any violation.”

The Solicitor General, however, said that it will not be “possible” for government servants to keep checking all websites as “this is such a huge, huge virtual world.”

The nodal agency has been taking up issues of violation of the 1994 Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, if complaints are brought before it, he said.

Meanwhile, the counsel for search engines, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, which are parties before the court, informed the Bench that in pursuance to earlier order, they have set up “in-house mechanism” to deal with issues of hosting or posting of materials on sites relating to sex-determination.

Section 22 of the PCPNDT Act pertains to prohibition of advertisements relating to pre-natal determination of sex and punishment for contravention.

The court was hearing a petition by Sabu Mathew George, a doctor who is seeking the apex court’s intervention in view of the falling sex ratio in the country.

The court, which has posted the matter for hearing on November 24, allowed lawyer Sanjay Parikh to give suggestions on ways to deal with violations of the law on pre-natal sex-determination.

Earlier, the apex court had asked Google India Pvt. Ltd., Yahoo India and Microsoft Corporation (I) Pvt. Ltd. to appoint an in-house expert body which would take steps “if any words or key words that is shown on internet and which has the potential to go counter to section 22 of PCPNDT Act shall be deleted forthwith.”

It had also asked the Centre to set up a nodal agency to deal with complaints of violations of the law.

The PCPNDT Act was enacted to stop female foeticides and arrest the declining sex ratio in India. It had banned pre-natal sex determination.

Microsoft Announces SteamVR Support for Mixed Reality Headsets; Halo Set for Debut as Well

Last year, Microsoft announced last year that it partnered with leading device makers including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and 3Glasses on a wide range of headsets that pair with Windows Mixed Reality-ready PCs. The company has now made a huge announcement as it says that SteamVR will be supported by the mixed reality headsets after they are made available later this year. Further, the company says that it has been working with 343 Industries to bring Halo to mixed reality experiences.

The Redmond-based company will be sharing more details about the upcoming mixed reality headsets at the IFA event in Berlin but has announced that Steam content will also be supported by the affordable headsets by the company. “Virtual reality enthusiasts know that Steam is a great place to enjoy cutting edge immersive experiences. We can’t wait to bring their content to you.” Microsoft’s Alex Kipman said in a blog post.

While the company has not announced specific details about the collaboration, it has indeed revealed that it is working with 343 Industries to produce content for the mixed reality platform. “We are working with 343 Industries to bring future Halo experiences into mixed reality,” Kipman said. If you have ever played any entry from the franchise, you have ample reasons to be excited about this partnership. Windows Central’s Daniel Rubino also reports Minecraft VR is in the offing.

In order to differentiate the mixed reality headsets from other products in the market, Microsoft says that its offerings will be more affordable as well as easier to set up. Talking about affordability, the headset and motion controller bundles will start from $399 (roughly Rs. 25,500) and will be compatible with existing and new PC models starting at $499 (roughly Rs. 31,900).

While there are headsets that require external sensors in order to work, the mixed-reality headsets from Microsoft and its partners will come with built-in sensors that track your position and allow you to simply plug in and play, the Kipman said in his post. This week, Dell also revealed the pricing of its Visor mixed-reality headset and said that the wearable will be made available from October at a price of $349.99 (roughly Rs. 22,400).

Christopher MacBride Set To Adapt Graphic Novel ‘A.D. After Death’ For Immersive Pics, Sony

Writer-director Christopher MacBride is becoming a go-to guy for graphic novel adaptations. After adapting a slew of others around town, he has been tapped by Sony and producer Josh Bratman at Immersive Pictures to adapt the Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire graphic novel A.D. After Death.

MacBride was previously hired to write and is attached to direct Sony’s Amensia, a sci-fi thriller based on the Arcana Comics graphic novel by Dwayne Harris. FilmNation is producing that film. He also previously wrote and is attached to direct Echo at 20th Century Fox and 21 Laps.

And, on top of that, he most recently adapted the graphic novel Scout, created by Timothy Truman, for Studio 8 and producer Braden Aftergood.

A.D. After Death is a three-part epic set in a future where a genetic cure for death has been found. Years after the discovery, one man starts to question everything, leading him on a mind-bending journey that will bring him face-to-face with his past and his own mortality. Snyder (Batman) and Lemire (Essex County) will serve as executive producers of the project. Eric Fineman is overseeing for Sony.

Sony also has on its development slate Lemiere’s sci-fi comic Descender. Bratman, (Fright Night, Priest) has a number of projects in development including an untitled John Lennon-Yoko Ono project and The Harlem Hellfighters.

While the press invites for ZenFone 4 earlier suggested that the smartphone will be launched on August 19 in Philippines, the company has now shared a new teaser for the handset and said that it will be unveiled ahead of that date in Taiwan – on August 17. Notably, the latest teaser for the smartphone gives us a glimpse at the dual camera setup at the back of the smartphone.

While the official teaser, posted by the company through a Facebook post, doesn’t reveal any particular details about the Asus ZenFone 4, it does show the smartphone bearing dual cameras at the back. This shouldn’t come as a surprise as the company has already launched Asus ZenFone 4 Max smartphone from the series in Russia, which also sports a dual camera setup.

Asus is planning to launch three models of the ZenFone 4 series, i.e. ZenFone 4 Pro, ZenFone 4, and ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro, as per a report by Digitimes. The report suggests that the ZenFone 4 Pro comes with a 5.7-inch display and will be powered by a Snapdragon 835 SoC. On the other hand, ZenFone 4 and Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro have been said to be the models targeted at mid-tier and entry-level segments respectively.

To recall, two other smartphones from the ZenFone 4 series, namely ZenFone 4 Selfie and ZenFone 4V, have also been tipped to be launched by the company. As per previous leaks, the ZenFone 4 Selfie is expected to run Android 7.1.1 Nougat out-of-the-box and sport a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) display. The smartphone has been tipped to be powered by a Snapdragon 625 SoC coupled with Adreno 506 GPU and 4GB of RAM. ZenFone 4 comes with 32GB of built-in storage. The selfie-focused smartphone has been tipped to pack a 16-megapixel rear camera and a 12-megapixel front sensor – both with 4K support.
