Government to Start Digital Village Programme Soon, Says Prasad

Government will soon launch a new programme, Digital Village, to provide services like health and education in villages with the help of technology.

The programme would be rolled out in 100 villages initially and will be expanded later, Law and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said Monday.

“We are going to unleash another important initiative – Digital Village. As per my understanding, it will be a collector-driven initiative. We propose to begin with 100 villages and expand it later,” Prasad said at the Digital India Awards event in New Delhi.

He said a collector with the help concerned local bodies may select a village to provide health, education and other virtual world service through Wi-Fi connectivity.

The minister appealed officers at the event to join pro-actively in government’s digital initiative aimed at transforming the country.

“We have trained 18 lakh people over a span of four days. We may scale it (digital payments training) up in January,” he said.

Government has set a target of training 1.25 crore people on digital payments by March 31, 2017.

Minister of State for Law and IT P P Chaudhary appreciated National Informatics Centre and said that there are about 8,000 websites carrying information about government work and facilitating transactions.

“I would like to suggest some of the areas where we have to perform. We are far behind in the generation of Intellectual Property. In the area of cyber security, we have to be pro-active and not only be reactive,” Chaudhary said.

IT secretary Aruna Sundararajan said this is the first time Indians are having access to government without intermediaries.

At the event, e-governance service of departments from Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab and Jharkhand won Digital India awards, earlier known as Web Ratna Aawards. Rajasthan won platinum award in the state category while Tamil Nadu received Gold and Haryana silver award for e-governance services.

North Goa won platinum award in districts category. Kupwara received Gold and Udham Singh Nagar bagged silver award for e-governance. Municipal Corporations of Surat, Greater Visakhapatnam, Madurai and UP’s e-NagarSewaUP bagged award.

Now Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) spotted on GFXBench

Shortly after the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2017) was spotted on GFXBench, the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) has also surfaced on the benchmarking website, revealing some of its key specifications.

As per the listing, the device is powered by an octa-core 1.5GHz processor, and sports a 4.7-inch HD display. Keep in mind that benchmarks sometimes do get their display size estimates wrong, but that seems less likely here as the 2016 edition of the device also featured a 4.7-inch screen.

Moving on, RAM is 2GB, while internal memory is 8GB. In terms of camera, the phone features a 12MP rear unit and an 8MP front shooter. It runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box.

New OS X Malware Spotted via Transmission BitTorrent App

Security researchers have discovered a new malware in OS X which was being spread via BitTorrent client application Transmission. According to the researchers at We Live Security, the new OS X malware dubbed OSX/Keydnap has been built to steal data of OS X’s keychain as well as “maintain a permanent backdoor.”

Researchers believe that it was distributed through a recompiled version of Transmission from the company’s official site. “OSX/Keydnap was distributed on a trusted website, which turned out to be “something else”. It spread via a recompiled version of the otherwise legitimate open source BitTorrent client application Transmission and distributed on their official website,” noted security researchers at We Live Security.

Notably, the Transmission team responded within minutes of receiving the malware notification and removed the malicious file from its server. Researchers however suggest those who downloaded Transmission v2.92 during August 28-29 2016 to verify the system for the presence specific files or directories available on the security website.

“If any of them exists, it means the malicious Transmission application was executed and that Keydnap is most likely running,” adds the security website.

The researchers point out that the new OS X malware OSX/Keydnap used the same technique as OS X ransomware discovered back in March.

In March, the first ever OS X ransomware spotted in the Transmission BitTorrent app was reported by Palo Alto Networks and once installed on the system, the infected app ran an embedded executable file on the system. Dubbed KeRanger, the ransomware encrypted files on the system and after completion of the process demanded to pay Bitcoin.

Thunder Purple variant of OnePlus 6T spotted in online listings

Were you disappointed that the OnePlus 6T is available only in Black and Black? There’s some good news – it seems that a new color version is on the way.

It’s dubbed “Thunder Purple” and was briefly up on Amazon Germany for pre-order. The €580 price matches the 8/128GB version in Midnight Black. It was an option on the official support page as well.

This will be the first purple in the OnePlus lineup. Besides the usual black and gray-ish colors, we’ve had Gold, Red and White. The Amber Red version of the OnePlus 6 was unveiled two months after the phone itself, so we may be in for a bit of a wait before the purple model arrives.

LG Q8+ Spotted on Certification Sites, LG Q7 Android One Variant Tipped

 

LG launched the Q series last year with the Q6 variants, and unveiled the LG Q8 soon after. Now, the company is working on the Q8 successor, and we’ve come to know about this through a KCC (Korean Certification) and Wi-Fi Alliance listing. The LG Q8+ has been listed there in two variants, hinting that the smartphone is in the offing real soon, and may be launched in the Korean markets initially. The two variants have also been listed on the page that contains a list of devices that support Google Play, further confirming their arrival. In the meanwhile, an Android One variant of the LG Q7 has been tipped to arrive soon.

The LG Q8+ has been listed on KCC in two variants with model numbers – LM-Q815S and LM-Q815L. Both the variants have been approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance as well. Furthermore, the devices have also been spotted on the Google Play list of supported devices page as well, reports Nashville Chatter Class. All of this suggests that the LG Q8+ will be arriving soon in two variants. The Wi-Fi certification suggests that the LG Q8+ will support dual-band Wi-Fi, and run on Android Oreo out-of-the-box.

The LG Q8 was launched last year in the end of July as a stripped down version of the LG V20. We expect to see the LG Q8+ sometime around the same time, and whether it will be a striped down version of the LG V30 or not, remains to be seen.

Furthermore, LG may also be working on an LG Q7 Android One variant for T-Mobile users in the US. The yet to be announced LG Stylo 4 kernel source code reveals that the company is working on a smartphone with the codename cv5a. This is expected to be Android One variant of LG Q7 and it may also be exclusive to T-Mobile in the United States, reports XDA Developers. The smartphone’s name alongside the codename has been updated on Google’s list of Play certified devices. The report states that this T-Mobile Android One device is likely a carrier variant of the LG Q7.

Based on the source code information, the Android One LG Q7 is expected to run on Android 8.1 Oreo, have a 5.5-inch full-HD+ (1080×2160 pixels) 18:9 LCD display. It is tipped to be powered by the Snapdragon 450 SoC paired with 2GB or 3GB of RAM. Battery is expected to be a 3000mAh offering with Quick Charge 3.0 support, and connectivity options include USB Type-C and NFC.

After rumours of Motorola’s new Android One-based smartphone expected to arrive soon, fresh reports are coming in that suggest the Lenovo-owned phone manufacturer might also be working on a smartphone that runs Google’s Android Oreo (Go edition), targeted towards budget smartphones. Dubbed the Moto C2, this smartphone is expected to be the most affordable smartphone in the brand’s lineup with features like 1GB of RAM and a 2100mAh battery. Multiple variants of this particular handset have been spotted going through certification in different regions.

The Moto C2 has been spotted on the portal of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), as first reported by Nashville Chatter Class. The report goes on to state that, previously, multiple variants of the same smartphone were spotted on other certifications sites; these include XT1920-15, XT1920-16, XT1920-18, and XT1920-19. The XT1920-15 is expected to launch in Western European markets, the XT1920-16 in EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa), and the last two variants (XT1920-18 and XT1920-19) of the purported Moto C2 are said to be made available in Latin America single-SIM and dual-SIM variants, respectively.

As for specifications, the Moto C2 will sport 1GB of RAM, 16GB of inbuilt storage, a 2000/ 2100mAh battery, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, and a Cat. 10 LTE modem, the report notes. The budget smartphone is said to measure 147.88×71.22mm. The report claims that, being an Android Oreo (Go edition) phone, the Moto C2 might sport a small 5.2-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

As for the rumoured Motorola One Power, previous leaks have suggested that this will be a mid-range smartphone with specifications on par with the likes of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro and Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1. It is expected to feature specifications such as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, a 3780mAh battery, a 12+5-megapixel dual rear camera setup, and Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box.

While much about the LG G7 ThinQ had been revealed up until now, the next-generation LG flagship has now surfaced on Geekbench database to detail its key specifications. The benchmark listing also confirms top-notch scores of the smartphone that is arriving in New York on May 2. The latest revelations emerge just after LG confirmed the presence of a 6.1-inch QHD+ (1440×3120 pixels) LCD panel with brightness of 1,000 nits and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The handset is also expected to come with a notch design and a ‘Second Screen’ that debuted on the LG V20 in September 2016.

As per the Geekbench listing, the LG G7 ThinQ (model number LGE LM-G710) is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC that has eight processing cores with a base frequency of 1.7GHz, coupled with 4GB of RAM. The latter part puts a question mark on the performance part as most of the flagship devices nowadays come with at least 6GB of RAM – OnePlus flagships have been sporting 8GB RAM for over a year now.

However, despite low RAM capacity, the benchmarked LG G7 ThinQ received scores in line with the Snapdragon 845 SoC-powered Samsung Galaxy S9 variant. It garnered 2,312 single-core score and 8,979 multi-core score.

We need to wait for the official launch of the LG G7 ThinQ to see its real-life performance. But in the meantime, LG is also in the headlines for preparing the LG Q7 as the successor to its last year’s Q6. The smartphone was recently spotted on the FCC site with a couple of screenshots that hinted the presence of an 18:9 aspect ratio-featuring display. It is expected that the LG Q7 will join the launch of the LG G7 ThinQ next month.

Rumours and leaks have been flying around about the upcoming generation of Google Pixelsmartphones and the handset’s regular-sized variant – expected to be called the Pixel 2 – has now been spotted on the US FCC website. Apart from confirming that the regular variant will be manufactured by HTC, which was already suggested before, the documentation has revealed that it will come with a squeezable frame just like the HTC U11.

As per the US FCC website documentation, spotted by Android Police, Pixel 2 will support ‘Active Edge’ squeezable features, which are expected to work like Edge Sense features that were introduced by HTC on its U11 smartphone. This essentially means that users will be able to perform certain functions in the smartphone by simply squeezing its frames from the sides. To recall, this information was already leaked earlier.

The device with model number NM8G011A, where ‘G’ indicates it is a Google product as per AP, can be seen running Android 8.0.1 and comes with security patch dated August 5. The Pixel 2 smartphone has been tipped to be powered by either Snapdragon 835 or 836 due to the presence of “8998” band, as per the report. A recent report also suggested that the upcoming Pixel smartphones will be the first to sport Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 836 SoC.

According to the documentation, the Pixel 2 smartphone is expected to come with 64GB of built-in storage and support NFC, Bluetooth, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. The smartphone will sport 4GB of RAM, apart from 64GB and 128GB of internal storage options. So far, the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 have also been tipped to sport an ‘Always On’ display mode. Finally, Android Police points out that the FCC listing of the previous generation Pixel smartphones was spotted around the same time last year, which can mean that the new generation might be launched in October this year as well.

To recall, as per previous leaks, the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 are rumoured to feature a 4.95-inch full-HD and 5.99-inch QHD (1440×2560 pixels) displays respectively that will be manufactured by LG. While the regular variant of the smartphone is expected to be manufactured by HTC, just as last year, the XL variant has been tipped to be made by LG.

The Pixel XL 2 is expected to feature wide bezels just like its predecessor but the Pixel XL 2 has been rumoured to come with near bezel-less display at front. The Pixel smartphones are expected to come with front-facing stereo speakers but ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack.
