YouTube Starts Showing More Local Language Content to Users

YouTube on Thursday said that it will start showing Indian users more local language content in the Home and Trending tabs. The change in displayed content will start rolling out for all users from Thursday itself, and users will not need to adjust any settings.

The Google-owned video sharing platform in a press statement said that it will automatically identify the user’s preferred Indic language, based on the user’s watch history, user interface language, and location. Languages include Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu.

In case YouTube identifies the wrong language for users, they can change their language setting from the bottom of the page on desktop. On the Android and iOS mobile apps, language settings are based on the device settings. YouTube adds that users can alternatively also just watch more videos in their language, and it “will gradually correct itself.”

The Trending section will show videos that are popular with other users with similar language preferences.

“We are excited to help more Indians find content in their local languages, especially those who are coming online for the first time. We’re equally excited to help regional content creators reach audiences in their local languages more quickly,” YouTube said in its statement.

Microsoft Starts Offering Complete Range of Cloud Services From UK Data Centres

Microsoft is introducing a complete set of cloud services from data centres in Britain, its second biggest market for cloud-based software after the United States, as demand for data localisation spreads across Europe and around the world.

The new offering will allow a range of British customers from the legal, banking, public and utility sectors to run operations over the Internet, something they had been reluctant to do for regulatory and data security reasons.

“We want to make sure that as many customers as possible have access to the cloud,” said Nicola Hodson, general manager of marketing and operations for Microsoft UK.

Local storage of data has grown more desirable as US technology companies have become dominant and after former US National Security Administration contractor Edward Snowden disclosed mass government surveillance, stoking public concern over data privacy, security and national sovereignty.

More recently, Britain’s vote to leave the European Union has raised questions about the status of data stored and processed in the UK.

Previously, Microsoft customers using cloud software relied on European data centres based in Dublin, Amsterdam or other locations. It operates more than 100 data centres globally.

The UK Ministry of Defence, which employs 230,000 people and spends more than $3 billion per year on technical infrastructure, will be an early customer of Microsoft’s cloud office apps and infrastructure, citing cost savings and data security.

Other initial UK cloud customers include automaker Aston Martin, and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, the country’s largest mental health agency, and Capita Plc, Britain’s largest business process outsourcing, which serves a mix of clients in central and local government and the private sector.

Microsoft is the world’s No. 2 cloud software supplier after Amazon, which pioneered cloud services a decade ago. Both companies also compete with Google, IBM, Oracle and many others.

The UK-based cloud will host Office 365, a suite of cloud applications that replaces Microsoft’s classic Office software, and Azure, its cloud-based software infrastructure platform. Microsoft plans to add its Dynamics CRM Online suite of cloud sales and marketing applications in the first half of 2017.

Forrester Research estimates global spending on public cloud platforms, business services and applications will reach $236 billion (roughly Rs. 15,66,244 crores) by 2020, a compound annual growth rate of 22 percent between 2015 and the end of the decade.

Microsoft already counts thousands of UK cloud customers ranging from retailer Marks and Spencer Group Plc to Virgin Atlantic airlines. Customers have the option of hosting data locally or elsewhere on the Microsoft network.

Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 Starts Receiving Android 9 Pie Beta Update in India

Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 is now receiving the Android 9 Pie beta update in India, revealed the Taiwanese company on Saturday. The update, which is now available to the beta programme participants, is notable only recommended to the users, who know what they are doing and have experience dealing with the pre-release software. Unlike the stable update, which will be released by Asus on a later date, the beta version of the Android 9 Pie update is likely to include bugs and other issues since it is still in testing. The company is hoping to get feedback from the actual users of the phone before rolling out the final version for everyone.

“ASUS unveils the Beta Power User Program giving access to early updates for feedback and testing so that the official Android Pie update is served as delicious and stable,” the company said in a statement.

The Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 owners, who are interested in trying the update, can head over to the company’s website for the beta programme. The company says the interested users of the phone should be willing to share their phone’s IMEI information, serial number, and current firmware details to be eligible for participation in the Beta Power User Program. The official changelog of the update is unavailable at the moment, but the users can expect to see the base Android 9 Pie features like Adaptive Battery, Adaptive Brightness, App Actions, and more.

The news of the Android Pie beta for Asus ZenFone Max Pro M2 comes just days after the Taiwanese company had released a stable software update for the phone, which included the January security patch and advanced AI-scene detection. The same update was also rolled out to the Asus ZenFone Max M2 phone.

WhatsApp Starts Testing 'Suspicious Link Detection' Feature to Limit Spam Circulation: Report

In another move to put a stop to the circulation of spam on its platform, WhatsApp is working on a Suspicious Link Detection feature. The new feature, which is presently said to be under testing, helps users detect suspicious links available within their WhatsApp messages. It is a part of the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.18.204 and later, though not available for the masses at the initial stage. The latest development hits amidst different measures by the Facebook-owned company to limit the circulation of spam and fake news through the instant messaging app that has over 1.5 billion monthly active users worldwide. A previous WhatsApp beta version brought a ‘Forwarded’ label that was aimed to make a dent in the growth of fake news distribution through the app and help people easily identify forwarded messages.

Leveraging the Suspicious Link Detection feature, WhatsApp analyses the links available in a message to detect a suspicious link, reports WABetaInfo. The messaging app is said to automatically identify whether the link in a received message is redirecting to a fake or alternative website that could potentially harm users. Upon detection of a suspicious link, the message is marked with a Red-coloured label to let users easily understand its behaviour.

The screenshots posted by the WABetaInfo folks highlight that WhatsApp also warns users when they try to open the link with a message that reads, “This link contains unusual characters. It may be trying to appear as another site.” It has also been claimed that WhatsApp analyses the link locally. This suggests that the links will not be sent to WhatsApp servers and the user data won’t be compromised for sake of detecting suspicious links.

We weren’t able to spot the reported Suspicious Link Detection feature on any of our Android devices using the latest WhatsApp beta version 2.18.207. However, since the WABetaInfo team claims that WhatsApp is currently testing the feature, we can expect its arrival at least for WhatsApp beta users sometime in the coming future. It is also reported that with some other improvements, the feature will also get an ability to let users manually report a suspicious link.

Earlier this month, WhatsApp came in the headlines for the massive spread of misinformation that allegedly led to the lynching of a large number of innocents in India. The IT ministry even asked WhatsApp to take preventative actions to restrict the proliferation of fake messages on its platform. The messaging service on its part revealed that it had started taking help from local experts to flight spam and fake news and announced ‘research awards’ for researchers interested in limiting the circulation of misinformative messages in the country. This was a step in addition to the primary moves such as the ‘Forwarded’ label and ‘Send Messages’ group controls to retain WhatsApp’s domination in the market of instant messaging apps. Particularly in India, WhatsApp serves over 200 million monthly active users.

Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge have started receiving Android Oreo. The new Android version is available through a software update that some users in the UK have reportedly received at the present stage. The latest development comes shortly after Samsung officially revealed the update schedule for both of its 2016 flagships in South Korea. Also, the update emerges months after the company released Android 8.0 Oreo for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

As reported by a large number of users on Reddit, the Android Oreo update is rolling out for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge model numbers SM-G930F and SM-G935F. It reportedly brings firmware version G930FXXU2ERD5 for the Galaxy S7 and G935FXXU2ERD5 for the Galaxy S7 Edge. Further, the update is sized at around 1.27GB and includes Samsung Experience 9.0. There are also default Android Oreo features, including Smart Autofill and Picture-in-Picture mode among others.

The Android Oreo update for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge additionally has features such as Samsung Cloud and Find My Mobile. Similarly, there are improvements, including Bluetooth with high-quality audio codec support, video player supporting auto repeat and 2x speed option, video recorder with the ability to block calls while recording, and sticky notification on Samsung Health to let you see step count at a glance. Folks at SamMobile report that alongside the update for unlocked Galaxy S7 users, the Android Oreo update available for Vodafone UK-locked Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge units.

As with any other Android update, the Android Oreo update for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge is rolling out as an over-the-air (OTA) package. You can check its availability on your device by going to Settings > Software updates. It is recommended to back up your data before proceeding with the update. You are also advised to use a high-speed data or Wi-Fi connectivity to download the update.

Nokia 3 (Review) has started receiving its Android 8.0 Oreo update. To recall, the smartphone had been launched back at MWC 2017, before being brought to India in June of the same year. It had been launched with Android 7.0 Nougat, but Nokia licensee HMD Global has been providing assurances from day 1 that it would rollout frequent Android version and security updates for all its smartphones. The company certainly seems to be keeping its promise, and all its smartphones thus far have been receiving timely updates. HMD Global had in December said it would skip the Android 7.1.2 Nougat version update for the Nokia 3, and instead proceed directly to the Android 8.0 Oreo update.

In late-January this year, HMD Global had said the Android Oreo beta update for the smartphone was around the corner, and by the end of February, it had released it. Now, on Tuesday, HMD Global Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas tweeted to say the Android 8.0 Oreo update is now available for Nokia 3. Users can expect a phased rollout over-the-air (OTA). To check if the OTA update is available in your region, visit Settings > About Phone > System Update. We recommend users download the update on Wi-Fi, and, have a minimum of 50 percent of charge before installing. As of writing this copy, it is not known which Android security patch accompanies the Android 8.0 Oreo update. The company had in February rolled out the February Android security patch for the smartphone.

To recall, the Nokia 3 was launched in India at Rs. 9,499. It sports a polycarbonate body and metallic frame on the sides. For specifications, the Nokia 3 has a 5-inch HD display, Android 7.0 Nougat, 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek 6737 SoC. It comes with 16GB of inbuilt storage, which is expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB). Optics include an 8-megapixel camera on both the front and back. The Nokia 3 packs a 2650mAh battery and measures 143.4×71.4×8.4mm.

HTC 10 Starts Receiving Android 8.0 Oreo Update

HTC 10 has started receiving its Android 8.0 Oreo update. The new update is rolling out in batches as an over-the-air (OTA) package for unlocked units of the HTC 10. The Taiwanese company promised the release of the latest Android version for its 2016 flagship back in August alongside confirming the same experience for the HTC U11 and HTC U Ultra.

As spotted by folks at AndroidPolice, the Android Oreo update for the HTC 10 brings the software version 3.16.617.2. It includes Android 8.0 Oreo along with default features such as Instant Apps, new Quick Settings menu, Notification dots, Picture in Picture (PiP) mode, and Smart Autofill, among various others. The update is also expected to include the latest Android security patch.

The update can be expected to be made available in phases for all HTC 10 units. You can check its availability by going to Settings > About > Software updates. Or else, you can manually install the update by downloading the 1.8GB RUU package that is available on the official HTC site. The manual process will wipe the data on your device. Therefore, it is recommended to back up the data locally before beginning with the RUU.

Launched in April 2016, the HTC 10 was originally running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It got an update to Android 7.0 Nougat in February last year that was debuted in 1.21GB size.

Importantly, the HTC 10 is not the only HTC smartphone to receive the official Android Oreo treatment. The company released the Oreo update for the HTC U11 in last November to upgrade the user experience on its flagship. The update brought the addition of VoWifi service that is initially available to Chunghwa Telecom subscribers in Taiwan. Further, it includes the November Android security patch.

Nokia 8 Android 8.0 Oreo Update Starts Rolling Out

Nokia 8 Android 8.0 Oreo update is now rolling out, bringing the latest version of Google’s mobile OS to HMD Global’s flagship-class smartphone. Released in India on Friday night, the release of the Android Oreo update for Nokia 8 was announced by Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer at HMD Global, in a tweet on Friday. Of course, the Android 8.0 Oreo beta build for Nokia 8 was released last month, but users needed to sign up to become a beta tester for that.  The update wighs 1518.1MB in size and includes the November Android security update as well.

All other Nokia Android smartphones from HMD Global will also receive their Android 8.0 Oreo updates in the near future, namely, the Nokia 2, Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6. In fact, they should all also get their Android P update, as promised by HMD Global last month.

The Nokia 2 is the latest smartphone from HMD Global, and it went on sale in India on Friday. It is also the cheapest smartphone from the company, sporting a price tag of Rs. 6,999 (recommended best buy price).

As for the Nokia 8, the smartphone was unveiled globally back in August, and then launched in India in September, before going on sale in October. The dual-SIM (Nano) Nokia 8 bears a 5.3-inch QHD (1440×2560 pixels) IPS display with 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The smartphone is IP54 rated, which makes it splash proof. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC (4 Kryo cores clocked at 2.5GHz and 4 Kryo cores clocked at 1.8GHz) coupled with 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM.

The dual rear camera setup on the Nokia 8 includes two 13-megapixel sensors – one is an RGB sensor and features optical image stabilisation (OIS), while the other is a monochrome sensor. Both have an aperture of f/2.0, 1.12-micron pixel elements, phase detection autofocus, a 76.9-degree wide-angle lens, phase detection autofocus (PDAF), dual-tone LED flash, and an IR range finder.

On the front, the Nokia 8 bears another 13-megapixel sensor with PDAF, 1.12-micron pixels, an f/2.0 aperture, and an 78.4-degree wide-angle lens. All three cameras come with Carl Zeiss optics. The company is touting the ‘bothies’ feature with the smartphone, allowing users to take photos or videos using the front and rear cameras simultaneously. The Nokia 8 is also optimised for one-touch live-streaming via Facebook Live and YouTube Live. Also on board is OZO Audio tech for spatial 360-degree audio recording (using 3 microphones), including an Audio Focus mode.

The Nokia 8 comes with 64GB of inbuilt UFS2.1 storage, expandable via microSD card (up to 256GB) in a hybrid dual-SIM configuration. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, USB Type-C (v3.1), and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Sensors on board include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, barometer, digital compass, gyroscope, and a proximity sensor. Bearing a 3090mAh non-removable battery, the Nokia 8 measures 151.5×73.7×7.9mm.

Xiaomi Mi A1 Android One Smartphone Starts Receiving November Security Update

Xiaomi’s first Android One smartphone, the Mi A1, is receiving an update that bumps the Android monthly security patch level to November. According to several reports, the update has started rolling out for Xiaomi Mi A1 users across different markets.

Some Mi A1 users have shared screenshots on XDA-Developers forum showing the new update notification. The update pop-up confirms that it brings November 2017 security update from Google which improves security and fixes bugs.

The update is also said to improve the stability of the Mi A1 as well as optimise performance. The forum has two different notification screenshots from users where some Mi A1 users are receiving the update with a size of 467MB while some are getting over 1GB size. Unfortunately, the update doesn’t include Oreo update as of now. The Mi A1 is heavily promoted as “created by Xiaomi and powered by Google” and the new update seemingly keeps the device up to the hype.

The Chinese company on Monday unveiled a brand new Rose Gold colour variant of the Mi A1. The new Rose Gold Mi A1 went on sale from Tuesday and was available via Mi.com and Flipkart. It was also made available via Mi Home stores, Mi Preferred Partner stores, and retail partner stores. As before, the Xiaomi Mi A1 has been priced in India at Rs. 14,999. The smartphone was so far available in Black and Gold colours.

Moto X4 has been launched in India. The latest Moto X-Series smartphone from Lenovo brand Moto will be exclusively available on Flipkart in India. Apart from its dual rear camera setup and front flash module, the smartphone is also IP68-rated for dust and water resistance. The Moto X4 also comes with Amazon Alexa support, however, this feature won’t be accessible until Amazon releases the Moto Alexa app, the company revealed to Gadgets 360. Lenovo is also claiming the Moto X4 is the first smartphone running on the new Snapdragon 630 SoC to be launched in India. The Moto X4 has been launched in two variants in India – 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage and 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage – and both feature dual-SIM support. Moto X4 price in India starts at Rs. 20,999 for the 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage variant, while the 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage variant is priced at Rs. 22,999. It will be available in Super Black and Sterling Blue colour variants, exclusively from Flipkart and Moto Hub shops. The Moto X4 goes on sale at 11:59pm on Monday, November 13.

The dual-SIM (Nano) Moto X4 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. It sports a 5.2-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) LTPS IPS display with a pixel density of 424ppi and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. It is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 630 SoC clocked at up to 2.2GHz, coupled with up to 4GB of RAM.

As for the dual rear camera setup on the Moto X4, Lenovo has chosen a 12-megapixel primary camera with a Dual Autofocus Pixel sensor, an f/2.0 aperture, and 1.4-micron pixels. The setup also consists of a 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle sensor with a 120-degree field of view, an f/2.2 aperture, and 1.12-micron pixels. The dual rear camera setup is accompanied by a colour correlated temperature (CCT) dual-LED flash and supports phase detection autofocus (PDAF). Overall, the setup helps provide such photography modes as ultra-wide angle shots, selective focus, as well as depth detection and depth effects like Bokeh.

The Moto X4’s front camera features 16-megapixel sensor with 1-micron pixels and an f/2.0 aperture, which the company says will help in low-light photography. Of course, the selfie flash also helps. Apart from a 4-megapixel adaptive low light mode, there is also a beautification mode.

As we mentioned, the Moto X4 is available in two inbuilt storage variants – 32GB or 64GB – both of which are expandable via microSD card (up to 2TB). Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth v5.0, dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS/ A-GPS, USB Type-C, NFC, FM radio, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Sensors on board include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, gyroscope, and a proximity sensor.

The Moto X4 measures 148.35×73.4×7.99mm (9.45mm at camera bump) and weighs 163 grams. It is powered by a 3000mAh non-removable ‘all-day’ battery, which when coupled with a 15W TurboPower charger (bundled in the box) will provide up to 6 hours of power in 15 minutes of charge.

We’ve mentioned some of the biggest features of the Moto X4, such as its IP68-rating for dust and water resistance. Its Bluetooth v5.0 connectivity has also been leveraged to allow the smartphone to sync with up to four speakers, headphones at a time – something Moto is calling a Wireless Sound System. It also bears a fingerprint sensor on the home button.

Other features include Moto Experiences, with gestures like a 3-finger swipe for screenshots, as well as a built-in password manager called Moto Key. There are also features like one-button navigation, Moto Display, and Moto Voice. The rear camera is also capable of landmark/ object recognition, and can also scan barcodes and QR codes. When scanning business cards, the smartphone automatically adds the contact.
