Third of Global Consumers Open to Google, Amazon Banking: Accenture Survey

Roughly one in three banking and insurance customers globally would consider switching their accounts to Google, Amazon or Facebook if the Silicon Valley giants offered financial services, according to a new survey on Wednesday.

The survey, conducted by consulting firm Accenture, found that among 32,715 people polled in 18 countries there was broad consumer demand for banks and insurance companies to use robo-advisory services, or software propelled by artificial intelligence or less human intervention.

In Brazil, 50 percent of respondents said they would be willing to switch their personal accounts. In Indonesia and Italy, 47 percent and 42 percent of respondents, respectively, said they would switch accounts.

But according to the survey, if the tech titans offered those services, 31 percent of global respondents would switch to Google, Amazon or Facebook for banking, and 29 percent would switch for insurance.

Already a trend in the wealth management industry, Wall Street banks and investment firms are increasingly building or buying so-called robo-advisers to provide automated investment advice through web-based platforms at a lower cost than traditional financial advisers.

“(Google, Amazon, Facebook) are setting the standards in terms of customer experience and personalisation,” said Piercarlo Gera, senior managing director at Accenture Financial Services. Consumers look at banks and see a gap, Gera said.

Google, Amazon and Facebook did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

While none of these companies currently offer bank or insurance products, Google and Facebook allow users to send payments to their contacts online. Amazon has a limited service providing loans to small sellers that it selects.

It is unclear whether regulations in any of the countries in which the survey was conducted would allow these companies to have banking or insurance licenses.

The survey was conducted from May to June in 2016, and respondents were asked to answer questions online.

When it came to specific services, more than 7 in 10 respondents said they would use robo-advice to figure out what kind of bank account to open, and nearly 4 out of 5 said they would use it for investing.

But 68 percent of respondents said they did not want a robot handling customer complaints, and 61 percent said they would prefer a human over an automated system for advice about complex products like mortgages.

Accenture launched a partnership with Google in September for cloud, mobility and analytic strategies to clients in retail, healthcare, consumer products, energy and finance.

Indian Enterprises Not Able to Respond to Cyber Threats: EY Survey

While India Inc is spending more on cyber-security each year, organisations are still not confident of their ability to sense, resist and respond to cyber threats, a survey by global professional services organisation EY said on Wednesday.

Sixty nine percent of the Indian respondents reported an increase in their cyber-security budgets over the last 12 months and almost three-fourths expect budgets to increase further in the next year.

Despite the increased investments, 75 percent of the Indian respondents say that their cyber-security function does not fully meet their organisations’ needs.

“We will need immense focus to encourage technological innovations in cyber-security to secure national critical infrastructure from cyber criminals,” said Gulshan Rai, National Cybersecurity Coordinator, National Security Council, Prime Minister’s Office, Government of India, during the release of the survey findings at an event in New Delhi.

Management and governance issues (42 percent), followed by lack of quality tools for managing information security and lack of executive awareness and support (41 percent) were seen as the main challenges for information security operations by the Indian respondents as compared to lack of budgets (61 percent) and skilled resources (56 percent) globally.

Thirty eight per cent of the respondents say that boards are not fully knowledgeable about cyber risks. Thirty seven percent cited budget constraints and lack of skilled resources (39 percent) as obstacles.

“While respondents are more confident of their ability to predict and detect a cyber-attack with 52 percent saying that they would be able to do so, but not enough attention is being given to building basic, yet essential capabilities,” the findings showed.

More than half of the respondents (55 percent) do not have a formal, threat intelligence programme, while 44 percent do not have a vulnerability identification capability.

Further, 33 percent do not have a security operations centre (SoC), which serves as a continuous monitoring mechanism.

“Since cyber resilience cannot be achieved by buying security-in-a-box, organisations need to focus on gathering periodic threat intelligence, enhancing their threat-hunting and breach-detection capabilities, and institutionalising a robust incident-response framework,” said Nitin Bhatt, EY India’s Risk Advisory Leader.

Jobs market shrinks for new graduates, survey suggests

The number of jobs for new graduates has shrunk by 8% in a year, suggests a survey of more than 200 top employers.

This is a sharp reversal after four years of growth in graduate jobs, says the Association of Graduate Recruiters.

Some firms are “repackaging” graduate roles as higher apprenticeships but overall the labour market for young people is shrinking, says the AGR.

Brexit is the biggest serious challenge for recruiters, said AGR Chief Executive Stephen Isherwood.

The AGR, which represents blue chip companies and major public sector employers, carries out an annual survey of graduate job vacancies among its members.

Jobs squeeze

This year the 208 firms which responded to the survey had 19,732 graduate positions to fill – compared with 21,427 last year.

By contrast, the 2015 survey showed a 13.2% increase in graduate scheme vacancies compared with the year before.

Detailed figures show vacancies in construction, retail and engineering have decreased the most:

  • Engineering vacancies for graduates were down 14% from 2,106 in 2015 to 1,820.
  • Retail vacancies fell 16% from 1,975 last year to 1,666 in 2016.
  • Construction vacancies were down 11% from 1,266 last year to 1,121 this year.

This year there are more than 10,000 apprenticeships on offer in these companies – a rise 13% on 2015, the AGR calculates, though it also points out that this is still relatively small compared with the drop in graduate vacancies.

Overall the combined number of vacancies for graduate jobs and apprenticeships has decreased 3% on the year, it adds.

“The labour market for young people is shrinking for the first time since the financial crisis, but the composition of the market is also changing as employers invest more in school leaver programmes and apprenticeships,” said Mr Isherwood.

“The uncertainty of Brexit is the single biggest challenge facing recruiters in the year ahead.”

He added that the apprenticeship levy, which from April 2017 will impose a levy of 0.5% on company payrolls to raise £3bn a year to fund three million apprenticeships, was another significant concern for employers.

But, despite the fall in the figures, there are still thousands of vacancies available for university graduates, he said, while “school leavers will find many more different options open to them for high quality jobs”.

The Department for Education said graduates continued to have “stronger employment outcomes, earning on average £9,500 a year more than non-graduates”.

“Last year the vast majority of graduates, 93.9%, were in employment or further study with a consistent increase over the last four years, up 3.6%,” said a DfE spokesman.

“Our higher education reforms are focusing universities on further improving graduate outcomes, by delivering excellent teaching which gives students the skills that both they and employers need.”

Primary pupils ‘feel test pressure’ – survey

Nearly 90% of 10- and 11-year old pupils in England feel pressure to do well in tests, a survey suggests.

ComRes researchers for BBC Newsround interviewed 750 10- and 11-year-olds who will be taking Key Stage Two Sats tests this week.

More than half (59%) said they felt some pressure to do well while (28%) felt “a lot of pressure”.

The government says the tests need not be stressful and rigorous testing helps raise standards in schools.

In the survey carried out last month, children were asked to pick a variety of words describing their mood in the run-up to the tests:

  • 59% said they were nervous
  • 39%, worried
  • 27%, stressed
  • 17%, sad and moody
  • and 16% said it affected their sleep.

But most were not unduly distressed, with almost half (48%) saying they did not mind taking the tests and an additional 14% saying they enjoyed them.

Some of the more positive words children used to describe their feelings about tests were:

  • confident – 21%
  • excited – 13%
  • and happy – 11%

Only 10% said they hated taking exams.

But 32% said they worried more about schoolwork when they had tests coming up and 25% said they found it hard to concentrate.

Last Tuesday some parents kept their children off school in a day of protest about primary tests in England – and more than 40,000 signed a petition calling for a boycott.

The protest, organised by the Let Our Kids Be Kids campaign, complained of a damaging culture of over-testing, saying children are “over-tested, over-worked and in a school system that places more importance on test results and league tables than children’s happiness and joy of learning”.

They raised concerns about the impact of primary tests, so-called Sats tests, taken by seven-year-olds and 11-year-olds, which are being made more stretching with changes to the curriculum.

Mental strain

Natasha Devon, the government’s former mental health champion for schools, whose job was axed last week, has also emphasised the level of mental strain being put on pupils by rigorous testing.

A Department for Education spokesman said the tests should not be stressful “and we know that good schools manage them appropriately”.

The spokesman said that tests at the end of primary school “help teachers understand how pupils are doing and identify where additional support is needed, as well as helping us make sure schools are doing well.

“They are a key part of making sure young people master the skills they need to reach their potential and succeed in life.

“As a government we recently asked young people what we could do to help them support their friends better. More than 1,700 young people gave their views and we will be investing £1.5m in peer support based on what they have told us.

“We have also worked with NHS England to trial a scheme to establish single points of contact for schools to make mental health support more joined up and readily available when it’s needed.”

The good news, at least for cloud providers, is that organizations are increasingly relying on the cloud to conduct business. The bad news is that their users are having a tough time holding onto their data.

In a survey of over 1,000 IT professionals in the U.S. and U.K., Spanning, an EMC subsidiary that specializes in software-as-a-service (SaaS) data backup, found that cloud email and messaging were top services (50 percent) they have already deployed or plan to deploy within the next 12 months. The study also found that financial, human resources and customer relationship management (CRM) cloud apps are in high demand.

Spanning’s findings are encouraging for enterprise SaaS vendors, but meanwhile, their customers are wrestling with data loss.

The leading cause of SaaS application data loss was accidental deletion by users (70 percent U.S., 66 percent U.K.). User error, not hackers, disgruntled employees or company insiders with malicious intent, is the main reason users may find that their cloud CRM records are missing or their inboxes have been mysteriously emptied out. In total, 43 percent of organizations in the U.S. and 41 percent in the U.K. suffered data loss from SaaS applications.

 Fortunately, the vast majority of businesses recognize the importance of SaaS data backups, observed Jeff Erramouspe, vice president and general manager of Spanning. “This survey not only validates the accelerating adoption of SaaS, but also that U.S. and U.K. IT professionals understand the importance of having a backup and recovery strategy for SaaS application data with only 7 percent and 8 percent, respectively, not planning or using any form of backup and recovery for their SaaS applications,” he said in a statement.

Just don’t expect cloud application providers to bail users out when they mistakenly delete crucial business data.

“When it comes to SaaS data protection, however, the survey shows misplaced confidence. SaaS providers are not responsible for recovery of data lost due to user error, yet that continues to be its leading cause,” cautioned Erramouspe. “It demonstrates the need for cloud-to-cloud backup and restore solutions.”

Generally, enterprises expect their SaaS providers to provide backup and recovery services (49 percent U.S., 42 percent U.K.). About a third of organizations are currently using cloud-to-cloud backup and recovery solutions or plan to use them within the next 12 months.

Survey results: Here’s what 376 marketers say is working in online marketing

For entrepreneurs and startup founders looking for new ways to grow their businesses, there’s no shortage of information on the “whats” and “hows” of digital marketing.

For the past decade, I’ve done my best to provide even more information in those categories, helping entrepreneurs with everything from the basics of building an online presence to advanced tactics in categories like SEO.

But it’s also important to zoom out, beyond the strategies and tactics, so we can understand the “whys” behind marketing — as well as where it’s headed and when.

Last year, I attempted to answer these questions with an original survey I called “What Works in Online Marketing,” and I walked away with some interesting revelations about the state of the industry. Now that it’s a year old, I figured it was time to redistribute the survey and find out exactly where we stand today.

You can download the entire report here (registration required), but below, I’d like to highlight some of the most interesting findings from the survey and discuss what they mean for your business.

Survey methods

The survey itself was fairly simple. It comprised a number of questions regarding the use and effectiveness of multiple different online marketing strategies, including content marketing, SEO, social media marketing and link building.

We distributed the survey to 376 people, most of whom are professional marketers or business owners, and collected the results for analysis. There was a fairly equal distribution of participants by age, gender and position.

This year’s most important takeaways

So, what did we learn about the state of online marketing? These were some of the biggest takeaways:

  1. Attitudes haven’t changed dramatically. Compared to last year, attitudes about marketing haven’t changed much one way or another. As you’ll see, marketers still feel good about the strategies they’re using, and they are investing in different tactics (such as SEO, content marketing and social media marketing) in similar patterns. There haven’t been many disruptive events to force people into new paradigms and new strategies, nor have there been any big scares or economic disruptions to curb the power of marketing.
  2. People are ready to spend more on marketing. Nearly 45 percent of marketers are planning to increase their marketing budgets this year, with another 30 percent of responders planning to keep their budgets the same. That means 75 percent of respondents are keeping their budgets the same or increasing them, compared to less than 25 percent who are planning to decrease their budgets. This is a sign of overall economic growth, potentially, but it’s also important to recognize it as a sign that most marketers are finding success.
  3. Marketers are clueless when it comes to ROI. But how are those marketers defining success? Return on investment (ROI), arguably the single most important metric for gauging the profitability of a campaign, remains elusive for many marketers to measure. For each core online marketing strategy, we asked marketers what type of ROI they were seeing—and the top answer for nearly every strategy was “not sure.” The only strong exception to this rule was social media marketing, which 44 percent of marketers saw a positive ROI for. Otherwise, either marketers aren’t measuring their ROI rates consistently, or they don’t know how to do it.
  4. Facebook is king, but Instagram is rising. As you might have predicted, Facebook remains the most popular social media platform, both in terms of the number of marketers using it and in terms of the ROI those marketers are seeing from it. Over 88 percent of respondents are using Facebook, and 53 list it as their top-ROI platform. However, Instagram is also rising in importance, jumping to become the second-most popular social platform for marketers (excepting YouTube). With 95 percent of marketers planning to keep or increase their social media budgets, social media marketing is likely to stay around for a while.
  5.  Optimism reigns. Finally, optimism in the online marketing community is high. Overall, marketers are increasing budgets, but they’re also increasing budgets for most specific strategies, including SEO, content marketing, link building, influencer marketing and social media. They’re happy with the results they’re getting, and they’re predicting that the strategies they use are going to stick around for a long time. For example, when asked if they thought SEO would ever become universally impractical, unprofitable or otherwise useless, 32 percent said “maybe, but it’s unlikely,” making it the top response. Only 22 percent gave some kind of “yes” answer, and 17 percent said “no, never.”

Where are we headed?

Between any two points, you can draw a straight line. With the information from this year’s survey in conjunction with information from last year’s survey, we can predict what’s going to unfold over the course of the next year.

Personally, I look forward to seeing more enthusiasm and more investment in online marketing overall. The more people we have working in the industry, the more innovation we’ll collectively drive, and the more information we’ll have to collectively work with.
