HIGHLIGHTS
- Lenovo’s tablet shipments marked an overall growth of 12.6 percent
- Samsung slipped to the second place
- Datawind stood at the third position with a market share of 18.2 percent
Lenovo beat Samsung to capture the top position in the tablet market in India with 21.8 percent market share in the second quarter of 2017, a report said on Thursday.
According to the report by research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), the company’s tablet shipments marked an overall growth of 12.6 percent, primarily contributed by its healthy growth in the commercial segment.
Over 80 percent of its shipments were driven by specific commercial projects delivered to government, education and large enterprises.
“Digital projects across government and education sectors are the key driving verticals for the growth of the commercial sector,” said Celso Gomes, Associate Market Analyst, Client Devices, IDC India, in a statement.
IDC observes the calendar year as the financial year in its reports.
Samsung slipped to the second place but maintained the shipments volume of the previous quarter with a market share of 20.6 percent.
The report said that a total of 7,22,000 tablets across all brands were shipped in the country in the quarter, marking a marginal growth of 2.9 percent from the previous quarter, despite the healthy growth in the commercial segment.
This was attributed to the decline of 13.8 percent in the consumer segment, resulting in a steep 26.8 percent year-on-year (YoY) drop in the total shipments.
The implementation of the Goods and Service Tax (GST) inhibited the growth of tablet shipments in the consumer segment, the report added.
“Uncertainty about the levy of the new tax structure restricted the stocking of inventory and in turn lead to limited sell-in of tablets in the country,” noted Gomes.
Datawind stood at the third position with a market share of 18.2 percent, followed by iBall at 15.2 percent.
With 49.6 percent quarter-on-quarter growth and 7.7 percent market share, Apple remained at the fifth position.

Dell Latitude 7212 Rugged Extreme Tablet, Alienware Monitors Launched
HIGHLIGHTS
- Dell has launched a new Latitude 7212 Rugged Extreme Tablet
- It is available at a starting price of $1,899
- Two new Alienware monitors with Nvidia G-Sync have also been launched
The IFA 2017 is underway and Dell has unveiled a slew of products in different categories. Dell has launched a new Latitude 7212 Rugged Extreme tablet that is aimed at the customers who keep their devices usually prone to weathering, accidental drops and shocks. The new Dell Latitude 7212 Rugged Extreme tablet runs Windows 10 Pro, and even Windows 7 Pro and is now available to purchase starting $1,899 (roughly Rs. 1.2 lakhs) in the US. Alongside, the PC maker has also revealed two new 34-inch gaming monitors under its Alienware brand that support Nvidia’s G-Sync for a better gameplay.
Starting off with the Dell Latitude 7212 Rugged Extreme tablet is highly suitable for industrial or field use that covers everything from construction to defence services, and can survive in adverse temperature from -29 to 63-degrees Celsius. As we said, the tablet ship with preloaded Windows 10 Pro and Windows 7 Pro, the latter for that chunk of people who still find using the Windows 10 cumbersome and unproductive. It can either be configured with sixth or seventh generation Intel processors, with an option to choose 8GB or 16GB of RAM, anywhere from 128GB to 1TB of SSD, and up to two different 34Wh batteries. The tablet sports a 11.6-inch 1080p display.
Considering the durability of the tablet, it could be expected to be bulky, however it only weighs roughly 1.3kg, which is equivalent to the weight of MacBook Air. Besides, Dell has also added a number of accessories for the tablet such as a rugged dock, rugged keyboard cover, rugged battery charger, rugged shoulder strap, rugged extreme handle, and rugged IO module.
Moving to Dell’s gaming space, the Alienware has received two fresh monitors under its brand. Both the monitors are 34-inch in size and come with Nvidia’s G-Sync technology. They bear unusual model numbers – AW3418DW and AW3418HW – where the former is a higher-end variant with a screen resolution of 3440×1440 with up to 120Hz refresh rate and 4ms response time, while the latter carries a lower-resolution of 2560×1080 pixels, but with a much higher refresh rate of 160Hz comparatively.
Both of them are equipped with built-in LED displays that come with customisable options to select as per the gamers’ choice. The higher-end Alienware monitor model AW3418DW comes with a price tag of $1,499 (roughly Rs. 96,000) and available right away, while the lower-end AW3418HW costs $1,199 (roughly Rs. 77,000) and is expected to launch later this year.
Xiaomi’s Manu Jain Explains Why the Company Hasn’t Launched Any Tablet in India Lately
HIGHLIGHTS
- Xiaomi hasn’t refreshed its tablet lineup in India in three years
- Company’s top executive today offered an explanation
- He also talked about the Mi TV, and Mi Notebook Air laptop
Xiaomi has no immediate plans to launch a refreshed Mi Pad tablet in India, Manu Kumar Jain said on Thursday. The reason? Not enough people in India seem to care for a tablet.
Every market is different, and at least in India, people didn’t respond very well to the first tablet Xiaomi launched in the country three years ago, Jain said, adding that in general, the craze for tablets is very low in India. This is why, he said, Xiaomi didn’t refresh the tablet lineup in India.
But at the same time, Xiaomi is exploring whether the Mi Notebook Air, is the right fit for the nation, he said. Jain added, however, that even the PC market has been slow in India for sometime.
When asked about the Mi TV series, the thin, low-priced television lineup from the company, Jain told Gadgets 360 that the company is looking at it, but there are several challenges that it needs to work out first before it could bring it to India.
Among those challenges are Xiaomi’s warehouses, which are at present not best suited to store the inventory, Jain said. The company would also need to figure out the right content catalogue to bundle along with the TV, he added.
Some of the content will come from Hungama Digital Media Entertainment, in which Xiaomi invested last year. But much of the strategy is yet to be worked out, he said. There is no firm timeline he could share how soon the company could launch the Xiaomi Mi TV series in India.
