IRCTC Offers Rs. 50 Cashback on Tickets Bought Using New mVisa Payment Method

Rail travellers using IRCTC can now book train tickets by mVisa payment method that allows them to scan a QR code and pay through smartphones. Users can securely link their visa debit, credit, or prepaid account to the mVisa application on their smartphones and make their travel bookings by simply scanning their mVisa QR code on the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website.

IRCTC, a subsidiary of the Indian Railways, is offering a promotion offer until September 4 that will give Rs. 50 cashback to consumers booking their tickets through mVisa scan and pay on the IRCTC website.

“The key to our success as India’s largest e-commerce organisation has been our ability to embrace new technologies that help us drive consumer engagement across our platform,” IRCTC CMD AK Manocha said on Tuesday. “Considering the phenomenal penetration of smartphones in India, moving to a mobile based payment solution such as mVisa was thus a natural choice for IRCTC,” he added.
The mVisa payment solution on IRCTC can potentially empower millions of consumers spread across Indian cities, towns and villages, to make payments using just their smartphones from the comfort of their homes.

India is currently one of the major smartphone markets in the world, with over a billion smartphones expected to be sold in the next five years. The increasing popularity and adoption of mobile devices presents a huge opportunity for the growth of mobile-based digital commerce.

UIDAI for Incentives to Merchants Using Aadhaar Payment System

In a bid to promote Aadhaar-based payment system, especially in rural pockets, UIDAI has favoured “incentives” for shopkeepers using the biometric mode for digital transactions, in line with commission given by banks to Business Correspondents.

“If a merchant is using Aadhaar-enabled payment systems then he should be put at par with Business Correspondent and whatever facility and commission is available to the Business Correspondent, he should be paid on the same lines,” Ajay Bhushan Pandey, CEO of UIDAI, told PTI.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is the nodal body responsible for rolling out the Aadhaar programme in the country.

“We are saying wherever you do not have business corespondents, supposing a merchant is able to facilitate payment directly from the Aadhaar-linked bank account, then there has to be a system in which the merchant should get the incentive,” he said. Doing this would be a win-win for banks too, Pandey said.

“It is beneficial for banks also, because banks do not have to hand over that much cash to the Business Correspondent…it is a win-win situation,” he added.

Pandey said that incentivising shopkeepers who adopt the biometric payment system would also “remove an extra layer” as consumers today approach banks, ATMs or business correspondents for withdrawl of money to purchase items such as ration.

“Once this incentive is given, it will give a solid push to digital payment particularly to those sections who do not have access to cards, smartphones, or internet banking. This section of the society will be best dealt, in this manner,” he said.

Noting the current incentive for Business Correspondent is up to one per cent of the transaction value subject to cap of Rs. 15, Pandey said where incentivising merchants is concerned banks could fix the modalities depending on transaction volumes.

“So far as the banks are concerned nothing is changing… the banks were paying this kind of commission to the Business Correspondents and they will continue to pay at similar levels,” he pointed out.

Pandey said that discussion to this effect is on with all major banks. “They are also evaluating. They also need to take a considered decision. This is the beginning it will take some time,” he said.

Aadhaar-based payment system is currently being used by 1,10,000 business correspondents for disbursing cash, and is also being utilised in Common Service Centres to pay for various services.

Digital payment channels like mobile wallets, USSD and RuPay have seen massive uptake and rise in transactions post demonetisation on November 8. Even in case of Aadhaar-enabled payment system, the volume of transactions have jumped 2.5 times post demonetisation from 6 lakh a day before November to 15 lakh transactions per day at present.

iPhone six in red case on Apple Macbook keyboardA headmistress who wanted to use mobile phone jamming technology to stop children getting distracted in lessons has been stopped by red tape, after Ofcom warned that it was a criminal offence.

Julia Polley, head at Wensleydale School and Sixth Form College, in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, was so frustrated at students’ fixation with their smart phones that she told parents she would be blocking 4G internet at the school.

She wrote to parents explaining that matters had come to a head in recent weeks, and that she had decided to take action.

“I have now invested in some technology which will block 4G signals on the school site and I have improved the filters on the wi-fi to further restrict some sites,” Ms Polley told parents.

However, her plans were scuppered when she was informed by North Yorkshire County Council’s IT support team and Ofcom that this was a criminal offence.

By transmitting signals on the frequencies at which GSM and UMTS operations are conducted, mobile phone jammers make it impossible for a handset located within their range of action to make or receive calls, send messages or use mobile internet.

Such technology is illegal because jammers are likely to affect wider areas and other frequencies than those they are intended for.

Disruption of emergency and rescue radio services

They can also result in the disruption of emergency and rescue radio services in the public area.

Ofcom has said it is a criminal offence under the Wireless Telegraphy Act to use any apparatus for the purposes of deliberately interfering with radio communications in the UK.

Ms Poley said: “Ultimately, all students need to be able to come into school feeling supported and safe and be able to concentrate on the next 13 weeks of study and revision.

“I will take much stronger exclusion action on any further unnecessary ‘social’ fall-outs which impact on school life and ask you to support us by monitoring mobile phone usage at home.”

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire County Council said: “Many schools, as with Wensleydale School and Sixth Form, have to deal with the consequences of social media issues spilling over into school life and distracting students from teaching and learning.

“The school took the precaution of closing down the guest Wi-Fi which has greater access to social media sites and sent letters to parents asking for their support in trying to eradicate unnecessary and damaging social media use in school.”

An Ofcom spokesperson said: “We sympathise with schools’ concerns about mobile phones in the classroom. Unfortunately signal blockers can harm other peoples’ mobile reception, as well as interfering with the emergency services and air traffic control.”

Scientists create portable brain interface using Google Glass

Using Google Glass, a team of researchers is developing a ‘smart’ portable system that will use functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure a person’s brain activity on the go. The applications for fNIRS are endless — from training air traffic controllers and drone operators to studying how students with disabilities learn best or why different people are more receptive to certain commercials.

“This is a new trend called neuroergonomics. It’s the study of the brain at work — cognitive neuroscience plus human factors,” said Hasan Ayaz, associate research professor at Drexel University. The phrase “neuroergonomics” was coined by the late Raja Parasuraman, former professor at George Mason University and the co-author of the study. Until now, most studies involving fNIRS took place indoors.

A group of Drexel biomedical engineers, in collaboration with researchers at George Mason University, have now brought their portable fNIRS system “into the wild.” In their study, published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, the researchers successfully measured the brain activity of participants navigating a college campus outdoors. The researchers wanted to compare one group of participants navigating campus with Google Glass to another group using Google Maps on an iPhone.

They found that overall, users with Google Glass had a higher situation awareness and lower mental workload than their peers navigating with an iPhone. The team also found that users wearing Google Glass fell victim to “cognitive tunnelling”, meaning they focused so much more of their attention to the display itself, that they easily ignored other aspects of their surroundings. “What we were able to see were the strengths and weaknesses of both. Now that we know we are able to capture that, we can now improve their design,” said Ayaz.

This opens up new areas of applications. “We will be able to analyse how the brain is functioning during all of these natural activities that you cannot replicate in artificial lab settings,” the authors noted. fNIRS is a way to measure oxygenation levels in the prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain responsible for complex behaviours like decision-making, cognitive expression and personality development.

Since the research team found that Google Glass users experienced some cognitive tunnelling while navigating, they suggest that future studies identify other brain biomarkers induced by this “blindness” to the outside world.

You may soon be paying on Amazon using selfies

You may be soon making payments online using selfies. In a recent move,Amazon says it wants its users to be able to authorize a transaction with a selfie. Woahh.. so now you’ll have to make ensure you’re looking decent while shopping online!

So this all comes from Amazon’s patent application for this technology. Filed recently, it describes using a camera to identify a user using facial recognition and then verifying that they are real by asking them to perform an action, like blinking eyes.

The patent further talks about the need for improved security around these electronic systems that allow you to purchase items with one click. It is possible to get someone’s password to his or her Amazon account where you can go on a buying spree, but with this selfie way of making payments which will use facial recognition, it would be a lot harder for hackers and thieves to use your accounts.

Amazon also describes the annoyance of typing in passwords on mobile devices that have small touch keyboards. Being able to take a picture and tilt your head to one side to verify that you are real could be a lot easier than typing in a super-secure password rife with capital letters, numbers and symbols.

Not a long ago, MasterCard had announced they are rolling out their own “selfie pay” that allows MasterCard holders to make mobile payments using facial recognition technology.

Generating leads can be easier than you think, all it takes is time and persistence. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Focus on one of these strategies for 6 months, devote at least 1 hour a day to it, and I can guarantee you, that at the end of those 6 months, you’ll have more leads than you thought was possible with such little time and effort each day!
