Google Maps now lets users review their previous movements
Google this week rolled-out a new update to Google Maps on iOS.

And the new software might just include the navigation app’s creepiest – and most useful – feature to date.

Google announced the new feature in a blog post.

Dubbed Your Timeline, it allows Google Maps users to look at all the places they’ve visited in the last few days, weeks, and months.

This could prove to be a brilliant aide-memoire for those struggling to recall a particular journey, or remember that coffee shop they stumbled across a few months ago.

Google Maps users can access the new feature from the slide-out menu in the iOS app.

Your Timeline is located in the main menu, beneath Your Places.

Tapping the new option lets users trawl back through the places they’ve visited in recent days, weeks and months.

Google lets Maps users edit the information in Your Timeline, tweaking place names and addresses to ensure everything about your travels is accurate.

Maps users can also delete a day, a date range, or the entire location-data history.

In addition, Google has included a variety of activity types to allow users to customise your modes of transportation and activities—from surfing to snowshoeing to horseback riding.

In its blog post, Google writes “What was the name of that antique store I popped into the other day? Where was that coffee shop we discovered on our last vacation? Did I drop off the dry cleaning on Tuesday or Wednesday? “Answering questions like these used to take some guesswork (and a great memory).

“But with Your Timeline on Google Maps, Android and desktop users could quickly revisit the things they’ve done and places they’ve been.

“Starting today, Google Maps users on iOS can join in on the fun and see a daily snapshot of their life as well.”

Google Maps can now send users monthly emails summarising the cities, countries, and places you’ve visited.

To manage these settings, open the settings tab from Your Timeline, and toggle “Timeline emails” on or off.

Google Says Yet to Receive Permission for Street View Launch in India

Google is yet to receive permissions – primarily on the policy front – to launch its Street View feature in India, Sanket Gupta, Maps Lead, Google India, said here on Thursday.

Street View allows users to explore world landmarks, discover natural wonders, and step inside locations such as museums, arena, parks and transport hubs. In India’s immediate neighbourhood, countries like Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have it in the south Asian region while Indonesia in the southeast, and Japan are deploying it, said Gupta.

“As of now we have not been able to get permissions. Discussions are still happening on that front. It’s more of a decision on the policy side that we have not been able to get permissions. Technically, we just need cameras and cars,” Gupta told the media here.

With more than 5,000 cities and six lakh villages mapped in India, the company aims to develop more country-relevant features.

“There are certain features which are especially relevant to India and the country has inspired the development of such features and many are now available globally.”

“The landmark-based directions feature that we developed for India and from India, has been launched in other countries. We will launch it in Indonesia. Then we have the ‘Named Intersections’ and local guides programme. The offline maps feature was inspired from India,” Gupta said.

India is among the top five countries using offline maps today.

“We are also trying to explore partnership with the Railways for real-time train travel data but we don’t have a timeline on that,” Gupta added.

The European Union holds “grave suspicions” about the dominance of Internet giant Google and has not ruled out breaking it up, according to a warning by the EU’s antitrust chief, Britain’s Telegraph reported on Sunday.

European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager reckons the threat to split Google into smaller companies must be kept open, the newspaper said.

Google currently faces new EU rules on its commercial practices with smaller businesses that use its services.

Late last year, Vestager said more cases against Google were likely in the future, after the European Commission slapped a record EUR 2.4 billion ($2.97 billion or roughly Rs. 19,300 crores) fine on the world’s most popular Internet search engine and told the firm to stop favouring its shopping service.

The European Commission is in the process of drafting a new regulation aimed at regulating e-commerce sites, app stores and search engines to be more transparent in how they rank search results and why they delist some services.

The antitrust chief’s office was not immediately available for comment on the Telegraph report.
